I know this is a totally newbie question, but when I'm writing an email to someone in Apple Mail, I see certain words underlined with a squiggly red line, but if I click on them, nothing happens. Looks like it's the spelling system telling me that I have mispelled a word, but not always. What's the story? What can I do at that point?

This is a kind of mundane question, but I constantly bump into acronyms and jargon that I don't understand, whether it's in group email, Twitter, or on people's blogs or blog comments. Where can I find answers?
