Sync my Bluetooth iPhone with my Chevy Equinox?I'm borrowing my girlfriend's Chevy Equinox (don't tell her, but I actually like it better than my Ford F10) and want to be able to use my Apple iPhone as a hands-free cell phone in the car. It has a fancy navigational system that includes bluetooth but I haven't figured out all the steps necessary to pair the iPhone with the Equinox. Do you by any chance know how to do that, Dave? You're in luck! A few weeks ago I was lucky to have Chevrolet loan me a Chevy Equinox for a road trip (Memphis, TN to Atlanta, GA, and if you're curious, you can read about my experiences and thoughts here: A Week With a Chevy Equinox) and the first thing I did when I got into the car was pull into a local parking lot and both figure out the navigational system and pair my own Apple iPhone 4 with the Equinox GPS system. I suppose it's lucky that I like to experiment with things, actually, because I more or less randomly pushed buttons on the Chevy nav system console until I started to find interesting areas to explore. I could have read the manual, but really, does anyone actually read user guides for electronics, especially car computer systems? :-) Back to task, though! First step is to ensure that you have Bluetooth enabled on your iPhone. If you don't use it to connect headphones or a hands-free system, by the way, I would strongly advice that you leave Bluetooth turned off to help extend your phone's battery life. That's true of any cell phone, actually. This is done by going to "Settings"... ![]() Tap on "General"... ![]() As you can see, I have Bluetooth turned on. If yours says "Off", tap on it and power it up. Now let's switch to the Chevy Equinox navigational system panel in the car: you can leave your iPhone on the passenger seat while this proceeds... ![]() Push on the "Config" button on the console and pay attention to the display. You'll see along the top that there are a number of different configuration options. Tap on "Phone" and you'll see this: ![]() Tap on "Bluetooth" (have I said how much I like touch screens in cars? A huge step forward for the usability of automotive devices)... ![]() You can probably guess: tap on "Add New Phone" and the Equinox is ready to pair: ![]() Now pick up your iPhone (or any other Bluetooth-enabled cell phone you seek to pair with the Chevy Equinox, of course) and tap on the Bluetooth entry in Settings. You did leave it there when you put the phone down, right? You should see something like this: ![]() Give it a few seconds and the Chevy Bluetooth receiver will appear as a new device: ![]() Tap on it, you're almost done! ![]() To ensure that you really want to pair the phone and base device (e.g., the car) there's a four-digit password required. If you look at the Chevy nav screen, however, you'll see what needs to be entered here. In my case, it was 6 2 9 2. I enter those four digits and the phone confirms it worked: ![]() The car nav system also confirms that the devices are now paired: ![]() That's all there is to it. Next time you're using your iPhone and are in the car, you'll find that you can initiate the call directly with the Chevy nav system, or on the phone you can select "General Motors" as a source, as shown in this example call: ![]() I'm not a huge fan of Bluetooth stereo -- too many drop-outs and hiccups -- but for phone calls, a hands-free system like the one in the Chevy Equinox is incredibly cool for while driving. It's much better than holding the phone and safer too.

Do you (or did you) have to pair your iPhone every time you got in the Chevy? My iPhone won't stay paired. I leave my Bluetooth "On" in iPhone Settings/General/Bluetooth. Also wondering if you were able to initiate calls hands free, or only receive, once the iPhone was paired. I've only been able to receive. Chevy says that's normal. Mike, you definitely shouldn't have to reconnect each time. Are you giving it a minute or two to connect once you get into the car? Is Bluetooth active on your iPhone? Mareit said, on July 11, 2011 6:12 PM:
My last phone worked with no issues, but my new iphone has tons of connectivity issues with my Equinox. I am still debating about turning in my iPhone for a droid. Dani John said, on November 25, 2011 8:43 AM:
I have an Equinox rental car. Picked it up 11/17 and paired it right out of the lot - no problems. Been working all week - in every way -no problems! Suddenly, last night while driving home, a 1st call work, then the 2nd call wouldn't. Couldn't pair them again. It showed the car's name on my HTC Aria phone, but it was grayed out, unavailable to me. Tried several different things, finally got it paired again this morning, but now when it dials out from the car, my phone doesn't respond - meaning it doesn't seem to know that the system is trying to dial. The screen on the car says dialing, but the phone does nothing. Then the car says 'sorry, unable to dial' Both phone and car display that Blue Tooth is connected. Haven't got a call in yet, so don't know if it will work that way. Had absolutely no problems before, LOVED it! Now??? Frustrated Debbie said, on December 29, 2011 8:45 AM:
I have an 07 Equinox that I bought used and, of course, the owner's manual is missing; therefore, I don't know how to connect my phone to the bluetooth, as there isn't a "config" button on my dash. HELP!! Jim Schwabe said, on February 3, 2012 5:56 AM:
How can make a 4s iphone call using my '09 Pontiac GXP' bluetooth? I linked the phone, and I tell the car "bluetooth", it acknowledges, then I say "voice", then it says "connected to Jim's 1phone", then there is a low double beep from the iphone, then I say "Call Sandy" and there is a higher-toned double beep.....then the car system times out just as the iPhone says "I'm sorry but.." before it is cut off. Any ideas would be appreciated. -Jim carolyn said, on March 31, 2012 3:20 PM:

Just bought my 2010 Equinox. It's supposed to have hands free calling. When I push config button and went to bluetooth it said not available. Does that mean my phone or the car? Thank you. Dave Taylor said, on January 30, 2013 10:03 PM:
I did some digging, Bettie, and the answer I found is not good: http://www.fixya.com/cars/t14939954-bluetooth_not_available_chevy_equinox Good luck and let us know how it turns out. Peggy said, on February 20, 2013 8:45 AM:
I just purchase a 2013 Chevy Equinox LT. I have paired my bluetooth and it works...well most of the time. I have an Android phone Verizon LG. When I am talking on the phone through the bluetooth...it falls off after a bit and then I have to just use my phone on speaker...until the next call. I do not have Pandora on my phone, nor Zedge anymore. When I look at my phone it is playing music that I have previously downloaded from Zedge. (Not out loud, as it's not connected with a chord to the port) What do I do to fix this problem. Thanks for your help in advance.
I do have a comment, now that you mention it!Check This Out Too... |
