Stop Windows importing my iPhone photos?

Every time I plug in my iPhone to my Toshiba PC laptop running Microsoft Windows 7, it promptly tries to import all the pictures and place copies of them into "My Pictures". It's driving me crazy. How the heck do I stop Windows trying to import my iPhone photos?

Dave's Answer:

It's confusing enough trying to work with the photos on your Apple iPhone 4 when you're on a Macintosh computer, but try to figure out how photographs work on a Windows PC and you're in a world of confusion.

To some extent this is just symptomatic of the fact that Apple's iTunes application is desperately in need of either a facelift or a complete rewrite, but for now we just have to all muddle through and figure out how to work with it.

But here's the interesting thing: the fact that Windows is automatically trying to import the photos on your iPhone every time you plug it in has nothing to do with iTunes and everything to do with what's called "autoplay" in the Win7 operating system.

Let's have a look...

First off, go to Start --> Control Panels and look for "AutoPlay":

win7 autoplay zune wmp itunes 1

Click on it, then scroll down to the very bottom of the window. Check out what's shown:

win7 iphone itunes auto download pics

There you go, simply specify your preference of choice for the device "Apple iPhone": it's probably set to "Import pictures and videos using Windows", but you can instead just choose "Take no action" and you're good, problem solved!
