Stop Outlook from asking for an account password?

Dave, How do I get Outlook to stop asking me for my network password every time I send an email? I just hooked up SBC Yahoo DSL. I finally was able to get emails to send out, but now this window keeps popping up. What's the trick to solve this problem?

Dave's Answer:

I've been in that sort of situation, so I can commiserate. Fortunately, it's not too hard to fix if you're running Microsoft Outlook 2000 / Outlook XP.

Here are the steps you'll need to take:

  1. Select Tools -> E-mail
    Accounts
menu option. (depending on your version of Outlook this option might be found under Tools -> Options -> Mail
    Setup
    tab -> E-mail Accounts button)
  2. The "View or change existing e-mail accounts" item should be already selected. Click "Next".
  3. Select the account you want to modify and click "Change".
  4. In the next screen, click "Remember password" in the "Logon Information" section in the lower left corner.
  5. Then click "Next" or "OK" as necessary to confirm.

That should be all that's required for your copy of Microsoft Outlook to forevermore remember your password and let you use your new SBC Yahoo account without any fuss or hassles.

Thanks to Jaspreet Singh, Ed Ellis and Tommy Martin for their help on this question.

JEEPEE'S SOLUTION DID >>NOT<< WORK FOR ME.

I started having the message popup problem back when I was running XP and Outlook 2002.

Now, I have a new computer, running Win7, MS Office Outlook 2007, and no router.

Today the message started appearing again so I followed Jeepee's excellent instructions, then rebooted.

The popup is back.

And, yes, the "Remember password" box has been checked on all of my email accounts, like, 4ever, dude. LOL

And, not only: JEEPEE'S SOLUTION DID >>NOT<< WORK FOR ME.

I had this issue hours ago. it happened when I change my password. Did a lot of google but nothing help. Lately I discovered that the password length was the caused. So verify that your password length and character is supported by your web mail or any. I am using live.com and it seems that the password length is limited only to 16 characters. Hope this help.

I'm just wondering if the registry edit of AppData to the %USERPROFILE%\Application Data will work on Windows 7?

Also wondering if they are any side effects from using this edit i.e. othe programs are affected.

Can anyone help please. TIA.

I just had this problem and I was looking for any suggestions on the net on how to fix it, it was bugging the crap out of me, every 3 mins I would get a popup. I was a little worried someone might have stolen my password and changed it on me so instead of trying to log into gmail thru Outlook 2007 I logged into gmail thru google to check if my password still worked. I got into my mailbox and seen there was a yellow highlighted note from google on top wanting me to click confirm if certain info was correct on my account, I hit confirm and logged out. As soon as I did outlook started delivering my messages to me and the "enter network password" pop up went away and hasn't came back on since. pretty cool huh =)

I thought I would share this, I usually dont blog but I wanted to contribute back to the awesome members of this community, Hope this helps someone =)

Hi Dave: I just made a cardinal error. didn't back up my registry but likely no damage done. as soon as I got to "Now choose Edit » New » Expandable String Value
6. Enter "AppData" as a name" I saw that I already had an "AppData" value so I deleted that new value and closed regedit. Hopefully I didn't cause more registry problems but my question is, do I add the AppData when I already have an entry of the same name in "user shell folders"?

FIX!!! – If this didn’t work for you this might help.

After messing with this problem for days! I finally figured it out.

Under Mail Folders on the left panel, you should only have “Mailbox” if you have anything else like a SharePoint server or archive messages, delete those.

Problem solved! You are welcome!

davidmln said, on August 30, 2010 4:02 PM:

My case was that on the left where you see your inbox I had more folders trying to sync. Say if you have an archive folder or some other folder that is trying to sync.

In other words make sure only your mailbox(your email) is the only thing trying to sync.

So my conclution is: maybe one of the methods worked (don´t know wich one) but the problem persist if you click send and receive "too fast". So be pacient, "don´t worry be happy"... and the problem solved. THAX

A not so common problem can occur when trying to access your Google Apps email account with Outlook or similar email client using POP or IMAP. When a user makes too many unsuccessful attempts to access an email account using POP or IMAP, Google may consider the account as being attacked or about to be compromised.
When this happens, Google Apps users may not be able to send mail using their email client. To fix the problem, Google suggests “Unlocking the CAPTCHA.”

https://www.google.com/accounts/UnlockCaptcha

or

http://www.google.com/a/your_domain.com/UnlockCaptcha

Obviously you need to replace “your_domain.com” with your actual domain name.

I am running Windows 7 64 bit and Outlook office 2007. On the tab Change E-mail account under logon information I can only fill in the user name and have no possibility to fill in a password and can't check the Remember password box.

After I start outlook and click send/receive the mailserver asks me for the password. After I have typed the password 5 times for my 5 e-mail accounts I can click send/receive for the rest of the day without outlook prompting me for a password.
From the moment I shut down Outlook and restart I have to fill in again the pasword when I click send/receive.

On another stattion with Vista Ultimate in combo with outlook 2007 I don't have these hassles.

Can anyone tell me how i can get the Remember password box checkable and the pasword box activated.

Starting outlook in save mode via outlook.exe /safe solves the problem and makes the password box checkable and activate the pasword box.
Only this is now sollution as I can't stay working all the time in safe mode.

I went to the help for Outlook (I have 2003) and followed directions for setting up a new "pst" folder - making it the primary one and lastly, adding the old one so i can access contents.

I had to redo all the email accounts, etc. and found myself with two pst folders holding all my emails and settings, but it worked. I will just use the old one whenever I need to search for something.

The only thing that I'm not sure about is that I the AppData file was already there so I just added the data name. I hope this doesn't cause problems!
Was I supposed to add another one with that name? because the my computer didn't let me. It said "you can't make another one, you already have a registry with that name." or something to that effect.

Anyway, this fix worked WONDERFULLY (so easy too) and hope it stays that way!

Thank you Pee Jee! I am not sure how you came up with this solution but it worked for me.

I had the problem of the password prompting, right after I upgraded my XP machine from Office 2000 to Office 2007. The problem may have occured because there may have not been a solid uprgade path between the 2 versions of the software.

It would be nice to know what brought it on but for now I am simply glad its fixed.

Your post did not work for me. I use Win 7 64-bit. When I go to the registry as instructed and try to create a New Expandable String with the name AppData, it will not save as AppData since I already have an AppData as a Key name. It just calls the new one New String #1 or something like that. I coud leave it named as that and enter a Value of ApplicationData, but I don't think that would make any difference. Am I making sense?

Here is how I fixed my Outlook 2007 "Enter Network Password" problem in Windows 7.
1.Goto Control Panel.
2. Select Mail (or) Mail (32-bit) Icon
3. Select "Email Accounts" button and remember the location of your personal folders .pst file ( very last line)
4. Select Close
5. Select "Show Profiles" Button.
6. Select the Account that is having the problem.
7. Select/click the Remove button and hit OK.
8. Start the Mail (or) Mail (32-bit) Icon again from Control Panel.
9. Select the "Show Profiles" Button.
10. Select "Add" and type the new name/email login information/account settings/etc. and hit OK.
11. Open up outlook. You should see it working correctly now. Outlook automatically generates a new .pst file.
12. Inside Outlook, go under Tools/"Account Settings" and select the "Data Files" tab. Click on the "Add" button and select the personal folder that you originally took note of in step 3 above, and hit ok.
13. Select the file you just generated and then click the "Set as Default" button. Select OK and return to the Outlook Inbox.
14. Select all your newly generated emails inside the Inbox and move them over to the new Personal Folders Inbox.
15. Close down outlook.
16. Open the file explorer window and delete the .pst folder that Outlook generated.
17. Reopen Outlook...it should give you an error. Select your original .pst file to replace what it's requesting.
18. Voila! You should be good to go.

This worked for me. I have three selectable email accounts that I can select from when opening Outlook. I've had the "Network Password" problem occurrence on one account, and then for the another account at a later time. I believe that Outlook messes up with the .pst file occasionally. The first time I had the problem, I took another route by completely removing my antivirus software (Eset Smart Security) and then re-installing it. It fixed the problem as well.

Best of luck to everyone experiencing the problem. I thought I would share my experience.

Over 12 years we had the same issue, perhaps once or twice a year - first as Comcast customers then with AT&T. They tell you it's not their problem but with Outlook. They have you reset your password at AT&T or Comcast website then go in to Outlook Tools/Account Settings and click on your email and use the same pass. But it does not fix the problem. In the past, we'd keep trying new techs until someone fixed it at Comcast or AT&T. The issue happened again this morning and AT&T said it was Outlook not them. They wanted to charge us $180 to have a specialist resolve since it was beyond AT&T and was a so called Outlook problem. As we yelled more dropped to $49. We accepted the charge but what the new tech did was go to att.net, click into Member Center (rather than PLease sign in here), I entred the user/pass at that logon screen instead. That fixed the problem! I'm guessing that when we had Comcast someone did the same on their end - thus resetting our password, correcting the 530 authenticity error. So if you have AT&T and see in details that it's a 530 auth error with yahoo, try changing your pass at att.net and then logon to MEMBER CENTER which should unblock your email. (Your Outlook and AT&T pass may have to match.) I wonder if it's a dirty trick by AT&T so they get people signed on to their service unnecessarily. It is not an Outlook software problem. We kept telling them such but got sucked in to the charge which we will fight.
