Sony PSP to Windows: Download Photos and Music?

I just bought a new Sony PSP and am having a heck of a time figuring out how to get it to work with my Windows XP PC. I know I can copy music and pictures onto the PSP, but I don't know how. Help?

Dave's Answer:

Good news. It's not difficult to accomplish what you seek, but there are a number of steps required to download files from your PC to your PSP.

The first step is to make sure that you have a Memory Stick Duo in your PSP and, if necessary, format the Memory Stick with the PSP itself (go to Home, then Settings, then scroll down to System Settings and use the 'X' button to select this option, then scroll down to Format Memory Stick and select the option). You'll only have to do that once.

Next, take the USB cable and hook one end into the PSP on the top middle edge and the other end into your PC.

Now, using the Settings menu, choose USB Connect and your PC should shortly see your PSP as a removable drive.

The very first time I did this on my Windows XP system, the OS installed some new drivers, then promptly told me it had to reboot for the device to be mounted on the system:

Sony PSP / Windows XP: device needs reboot

So, logically, I did just that, and when it rebooted the device showed up as Removable Disk G:, as shown here on My Computer:

Sony PSP / Windows XP removable disk G:

Double click the new drive and you'll find that there's only one folder therein, called PSP. Double click in that and you'll find that you have four folders that the format has created:

Sony PSP folders in the Windows XP PSP Folder

Looking good! Now if you have MP3 music files, you can drag and drop them into the MUSIC folder (and if they're in the wrong audio file format, please see How to convert WMA audio files into MP3 audio files), and JPEG (or, sometimes, JPG) photographs or graphics, you can download them into the PHOTO folder. Once you've done that, perusing the PHOTO folder, for example, will reveal that your pictures are loaded and ready to use:

Windows XP: Browsing the Sony PSP Photo Folder

That's about all you need to do, believe it or not. Copy any music or graphic files you want into the appropriate folders, then when you're done move back up to the list of "Devices with Removable Storage", click on the PSP removable disk and choose Eject.

(Actually, sometimes when I do this step Windows XP refuses to eject the disk, complaining that "An error was encountered trying to eject 'Removable Disk (G:)' but I've found if I ignore the error and just unplug the PSP, all is well)

Now, to view downloaded pictures on your PSP, move to the Photo area. You'll see one item shown: "Memory Stick" and an indication of how much free space you still have on your Memory Stick Duo. Click on that by pressing the 'x' button and... poof! You'll see all your photos listed. Click on any and you'll get a nice full-screen view.

To listen to the songs you've downloaded, go to Music, click through the "Memory Stick" information, and you'll see a list of MP3 files. Click on any of them to have them play.

That should get you going with your PSP. The issue of how to download movies, well, that's quite a bit more complicated and something we'll explore in a different article. :-)

I just want to say your article was so very easy and MUCH more help then the people at the game stores, and the help desk at Sony. I have been fighting all weekend with the books to figure this PSP out, and wondered " Did I buy another dust collector to hide in the closet from my hubby? " Well the answer is no, after reading your article and following the instructions I am safe from DIVORCE. Now I need help with getting past a stage on Ridge Racer, or some hints, so I must go look.. Thank you for your HELP....

Posted by: Bonnie at July 24, 2005 6:17 PM

Thanks Bonnie. In terms of Ridge Racer, well, I can consistently get through the first three tracks, then I don't seem to have the steering skills to get beyond it. Yet. :-)

Hm... I bought a PSP just a little while ago, its version 1.52 (Im going to upgrade as soon as the 2.0 US version comes out). The first time i used it, it was on a windows ME and it worked great. I brought it home and i couldnt make it work on my windows xp home edition OR the xp office, but i could get it to work on another windows ME and my brothers win 98 (ps. i used the SAME usb cable every time). Everytime i plug it in to my xp home or xp office i get the same message saying that "the device is not recognized" or "device has malfunctioned" and i get a nice window with all my usb ports and one of them saying "unknown device". I don't get it, iv heardor PSPs not working on win 98 before, but mine wont work on xp!!

My brother's PSP version 1.52 has the exact same problem.

i dont have a drive g: and when i go to usb mode nothing pops up to install it what do i do?

Posted by: johnny at October 20, 2005 1:53 AM

As far as I know, the PSP is only compatible with Windows XP systems: on other systems, even when you put the PSP into "USB CONNECT" mode (you did that, right? And plugged the USB cable into both the PSP and your computer?) nothing happens.

I haven't tested it, but there is a chap who advertises a Windows 98 driver for the PSP that you can try:

http://win98.drivers.w.interia.pl/psp.html

If someone does try it, please do report back what kind of results you had with this driver.

i did all the following:
1. turned on psp and computer
2. plugged in the usb cable to psp and computer

Posted by: areille at November 7, 2005 6:52 PM

Make sure, Arielle, that you look *inside* the "Memory Stick" folder on your Sony PSP: the songs don't show up under MUSIC, but under that folder within the MUSIC folder.

I connect my PSP to my system, and in the tray, it says something along the lines of "PSP Variant 1", or something, but it doesn't install any drivers to make it work properly. The system recognizes it when it's plugged in, but I can't access the stick from the PC. Running Windows XP Home.

Posted by: Hypaxion at December 5, 2005 7:53 AM

Very weird, Hypaxion. Sounds like you have the wrong driver, but I can't imagine where it came from? Have you added new drivers to your system??

Posted by: Dave Taylor at December 5, 2005 10:18 PM

I bought a PSP the day it came out. I wanted to put pictures and games in it but I don't know how! The main reason I wanted one was to be able to play and listen to music on the same portable devuce. But now that I have one, I don't know how to put music in it. Please e-mail me so I can enjoy my PSP!

i need to format my memory stick pro duo but i already have saved data on it and i got really far on games and to be able to get stuff on my psp i have have the data deleted so i can format it

Posted by: Lewis at December 12, 2005 2:28 PM

Lewis, you can't save some of the data and delete everything else, as far as I know, though you can experiment if you want. See if you can find the save files on the Memory Stick when your PSP is hooked up to your computer, copy the save files, reformat your memory stick, then copy the save files back. Theoretically should work...

Dave, I took your advice and successfully put mp3 files onto my psp, but is there a way to put music videos from Itunes onto my psp. When I tried to drag my music videos from Itunes onto a folder there was no VIDEO folder. Is there a different way to put music videos onto my psp or is it just no possible.

Posted by: Andrew at December 18, 2005 10:28 PM

As you surmise, Andrew, there's a completely different technique for adding video to your PSP. Please see:

http://www.askdavetaylor.com/about_psp_video.html

Also, "Who?", if you're running an OS other than WinXP or Mac OS X, you're basically on your own in terms of getting it to work. Otherwise, it should work once you remember to put the PSP in "USB CONNECT" mode once it's hooked up.

Posted by: debra adams at December 27, 2005 8:21 AM

Patrick and Frederick, I'm afraid I don't know of any PSP drivers for Windows ME, so you might be out of luck. :-(

Debra, I bet you still have WMP set to rip and save your audio files in "WMA" format, which isn't what you want. See my recent article on setting Windows Media Player to produce MP3 files (which are compatible with the PSP):

hey dave i have a question, everytime I plug in my usb cable to my pc and psp, i get this window that pops up with 5 options that have nothing to do with what i want. i cant get my pictures into my psp. i need help BAD. i've tried everything u said but i just cant get it to work for me. plz help me!! thanks!

Posted by: ismael castillo at December 28, 2005 12:34 AM

Ismael, sounds like your system is configured to run a photo capture program each time an external device is connected. Darn tedious. Can't you just quit the program or even just ignore it? Then go to My Computer and find the PSP device?

Posted by: Dave Taylor at December 28, 2005 9:42 AM

I purchased a USB made specifically for PSP's. Everytime I insert it into my Windows XP computer, I get the following message: One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned, and Windows does not recognize it. For assistance in solving this problem, click this message. Pleaseeeeeeee help meeeeeeee.

Posted by: jodi at December 28, 2005 5:30 PM

I get as far as finding driver G but when I try and send a pictures there it give me a message saying cannot find specific file, make sure you specify the correct path and file name. Can you please help me with this. Its a big headache.

Posted by: Gabriela at December 29, 2005 9:49 AM

yeah u can ignore it but u know how your supposed to find 4 folders on your psp that say music photo and so on? well i only have 2 folders that say "save data" and "system". when I copy photos in EITHER of those two, my psp seems to be saving them, but i dont see them anywhere.

Posted by: ismael castillo at December 29, 2005 7:40 PM

Jodi, try plugging the cable into a different port and, if possible, plug the PSP into a different PC too, just to compare what happens.

Gabriela, does your PSP show up on your desktop as "G:" then? And what do you see when you go inside it?

Finally, Ismael, you need to reformat your Memory Stick on the PSP itself (which, unfortunately, will lose all your saved games) so all the proper folders are created in the right order. Make sure you do the format *on the PSP* not on your computer.

Posted by: Dave Taylor at December 29, 2005 9:22 PM

Dave,

Great site and advice!!

Just purchased yesterday and had installed a sweet Eclipse Fujitsu Ten CD8445 in my Expedition http://www.eclipse-web.com/cd/cd8445.html car stereo receiver. Already even have my Sirius configured. It has a slot behind the front panel for the memory stick and can play and read WMA or MP3 files. Purchased a 1GB sony type memory stick today by Lexar at Wolff Camera here in Memphis. Now, I have maybe 700 I-Tunes on my pc. Question - seen your articles abot importing songs and getting them to format as MP3 vs WMA or i-tunes format and how to burn them on cds as MP3s.

How then do I take all these I-tunes formated files in the various folders and burn them directly to the memory stick - skipping the cd step? Seems I-Tunes only wants to burn them to my cd burner and nowhere else. May be a silly question but hopefully I don't have to burn to CDs first and then drag from the CDs to the memory stick as will take forever and what a complete nightmare. Is there not a more direct method? Know Apple is big on the song burn limit thing. My library is legit paid for and personal use only and no trouble on burn limits for me yet but I really want to max out the 1GB stick with as many I-Tunes as I can cram on it and stop messing with the CDs. I'm running XP home right now and latest version of I-Tunes. Have a Belkin high speed 8 in 1 media reader/writer on a USB cable to my pc. Help !!!! and Happy New Year!

Posted by: ismael castillo at December 30, 2005 4:54 PM

oh hey dave nevermind, i did what u said and it worked. Thanks for everything!! just one more question though, does a "video" folder have to come up? Because instead of a vido folder i go one that says "common", is that the same thing?

Working with video is quite a bit more tricky. Please see:

Dave I have another question. i have this 512MB memory stick in my psp and I've only put 25 songs in there and it says theres only 15MB left?!! WHAT HAPPENED???

Posted by: ismael castillo at January 1, 2006 9:40 PM

Saved games can take up a LOT of space on your Memory Stick, actually, so is it possible that's what is eating up your space?

Posted by: Dave Taylor at January 1, 2006 10:47 PM

i found out why i only had 15MB lol, but i still dont get one thing, all i have on my 512MB stick are 32 songs now, and the memory says it has like around 150MB. why did it take so much space, i am sure i have nothing else on my memory stick in the psp AND PC. i dont know what is causing so much memory loss from just having songs.

I didn't know I had to format my memory card in the first place, and I have a bunch of save files for my games and when I go to format my memory stick, it tells me I have to erase everything on my memory stick. Can I copy all the saves on my psp to my comp and then put them back on and have them there because I don't want to lose all my process. Thanks for your help.

Posted by: Rainer at February 8, 2007 7:09 PM

im really sorry i keep giving you more info and taking up more space but i would like to know if this is normal. after i double click on removable disk F there are more folders than just PSP. There are: PSP, MUSIC, PICTURE, VIDEO, MP_ROOT
(i have no idea what it is). Inside the PSP Folder there is: COMMON, GAME, SYSTEM, SAVEDATA.
Inside MP_ROOT there is are folders (with nothing in them) called: 100MNV01 and 101ANV01 if you could tell me what these are as well that would be a big help.
and i sure hope you can read what my e-mail is because i am definitely not putting it up for everyone to see (no offense everyone)

Thanks Grisly Adams(Dave Taylor)........ Nah Im just kidding your site is pretty decent you helped me out quite a bit actually. Thanks dude!!!

I just brought a new PSP and i have firmware 3.03 installed. I let the PS format the memory stick and the folder structure is: (from windows)
F:\MP_ROOT
F:\MUSIC
F:\PICTURE
F:\PSP
F:\PSP\COMMON
F:\PSP\GAME
F:\PSP\SAVEDATA
F:\PSP\SYSTEM
F:\VIDEO
F:\MEMSTICK.IND
F:\MSTK_PRO.IND

Dragging music files into the music folder will work as described above

Posted by: Raul at March 1, 2007 5:29 PM

how can i get a cord for my psp to put music and pictures on it.

Posted by: Joe at March 3, 2007 10:00 AM

Raul, the PSP is not a PC, so anything you see that appears to be Windows XP or any other standard PC program running on the PSP is a trick. It'd be cool if you could run Windows on the PSP, but it just ain't so...

Joe, the cord you want is a standard "mini-USB" cord that has the narrow connector on one side and a standard USB connector on the other. You can get 'em at Target, Wal-Mart, Radio Shack and just about any other store that sells any sort of gadget.

how to put psphacks on psp?

Posted by: ajifowoke at July 13, 2007 6:45 PM

Hey this info helps a lot. =) can you help me with my psp? I got some short questions and stuff i cant figure out,

I have a GateWay, it aint the best of computers but its all i got at the moment, First I hook the Usb cable to computer and psp, and then i click USB connection and it says please wait and is still saying please wait, then nothing happens on computer so i go to control panel and click add new hardware and it says windows will search for any new plugin and play devices, then i click next and it searches. next it says the windows searches for devices for usb devices.

after i click next it has 2 clickable dots sorta like check marking spots to pick one of the options. one says search the best driver for your device(recommended)

and the other says display a list of drivers in a specific location so you can select the driver you want. I go to the recommended one and it says windows will search for new drivers in its drivers database, and it has a bunch of spots you can click for check marks for it to begin its search with I checked the boxes that say Floppy disk CD-Rom Drive Microsoft windows update and specify a location and under it all it says driver D:\,A:\,C:\CABS,C:\CABS <--- thats all the drivers in the scroll menu.

so heres the main problem,

I go with one driver but it says Windows was unable to locate a driver for this device, if you do not want to install a driver now click next to search again click back. so i go back to the other driver types but they all say the same thing. plz can you help me out? sorry for typeing so much.

We are now back in England and he is trying to upload some photos to it. We have gone to my computer, made a file called Photos on the PSP and drug and dropped photos to it, but nothing happens.
