Sony PSP to Windows: Download Photos and Music?

I just bought a new Sony PSP and am having a heck of a time figuring out how to get it to work with my Windows XP PC. I know I can copy music and pictures onto the PSP, but I don't know how. Help?

Dave's Answer:

Good news. It's not difficult to accomplish what you seek, but there are a number of steps required to download files from your PC to your PSP.

The first step is to make sure that you have a Memory Stick Duo in your PSP and, if necessary, format the Memory Stick with the PSP itself (go to Home, then Settings, then scroll down to System Settings and use the 'X' button to select this option, then scroll down to Format Memory Stick and select the option). You'll only have to do that once.

Next, take the USB cable and hook one end into the PSP on the top middle edge and the other end into your PC.

Now, using the Settings menu, choose USB Connect and your PC should shortly see your PSP as a removable drive.

The very first time I did this on my Windows XP system, the OS installed some new drivers, then promptly told me it had to reboot for the device to be mounted on the system:

Sony PSP / Windows XP: device needs reboot

So, logically, I did just that, and when it rebooted the device showed up as Removable Disk G:, as shown here on My Computer:

Sony PSP / Windows XP removable disk G:

Double click the new drive and you'll find that there's only one folder therein, called PSP. Double click in that and you'll find that you have four folders that the format has created:

Sony PSP folders in the Windows XP PSP Folder

Looking good! Now if you have MP3 music files, you can drag and drop them into the MUSIC folder (and if they're in the wrong audio file format, please see How to convert WMA audio files into MP3 audio files), and JPEG (or, sometimes, JPG) photographs or graphics, you can download them into the PHOTO folder. Once you've done that, perusing the PHOTO folder, for example, will reveal that your pictures are loaded and ready to use:

Windows XP: Browsing the Sony PSP Photo Folder

That's about all you need to do, believe it or not. Copy any music or graphic files you want into the appropriate folders, then when you're done move back up to the list of "Devices with Removable Storage", click on the PSP removable disk and choose Eject.

(Actually, sometimes when I do this step Windows XP refuses to eject the disk, complaining that "An error was encountered trying to eject 'Removable Disk (G:)' but I've found if I ignore the error and just unplug the PSP, all is well)

Now, to view downloaded pictures on your PSP, move to the Photo area. You'll see one item shown: "Memory Stick" and an indication of how much free space you still have on your Memory Stick Duo. Click on that by pressing the 'x' button and... poof! You'll see all your photos listed. Click on any and you'll get a nice full-screen view.

To listen to the songs you've downloaded, go to Music, click through the "Memory Stick" information, and you'll see a list of MP3 files. Click on any of them to have them play.

That should get you going with your PSP. The issue of how to download movies, well, that's quite a bit more complicated and something we'll explore in a different article. :-)

I just want to say your article was so very easy and MUCH more help then the people at the game stores, and the help desk at Sony. I have been fighting all weekend with the books to figure this PSP out, and wondered " Did I buy another dust collector to hide in the closet from my hubby? " Well the answer is no, after reading your article and following the instructions I am safe from DIVORCE. Now I need help with getting past a stage on Ridge Racer, or some hints, so I must go look.. Thank you for your HELP....

Dave Taylor said, on July 24, 2005 7:15 PM:

Thanks Bonnie. In terms of Ridge Racer, well, I can consistently get through the first three tracks, then I don't seem to have the steering skills to get beyond it. Yet. :-)

Hm... I bought a PSP just a little while ago, its version 1.52 (Im going to upgrade as soon as the 2.0 US version comes out). The first time i used it, it was on a windows ME and it worked great. I brought it home and i couldnt make it work on my windows xp home edition OR the xp office, but i could get it to work on another windows ME and my brothers win 98 (ps. i used the SAME usb cable every time). Everytime i plug it in to my xp home or xp office i get the same message saying that "the device is not recognized" or "device has malfunctioned" and i get a nice window with all my usb ports and one of them saying "unknown device". I don't get it, iv heardor PSPs not working on win 98 before, but mine wont work on xp!!

My brother's PSP version 1.52 has the exact same problem.

Dave Taylor said, on October 20, 2005 2:24 AM:

As far as I know, the PSP is only compatible with Windows XP systems: on other systems, even when you put the PSP into "USB CONNECT" mode (you did that, right? And plugged the USB cable into both the PSP and your computer?) nothing happens.

I haven't tested it, but there is a chap who advertises a Windows 98 driver for the PSP that you can try:

http://win98.drivers.w.interia.pl/psp.html

If someone does try it, please do report back what kind of results you had with this driver.

Dave Taylor said, on December 12, 2005 4:42 PM:

Lewis, you can't save some of the data and delete everything else, as far as I know, though you can experiment if you want. See if you can find the save files on the Memory Stick when your PSP is hooked up to your computer, copy the save files, reformat your memory stick, then copy the save files back. Theoretically should work...

Dave, I took your advice and successfully put mp3 files onto my psp, but is there a way to put music videos from Itunes onto my psp. When I tried to drag my music videos from Itunes onto a folder there was no VIDEO folder. Is there a different way to put music videos onto my psp or is it just no possible.

Dave Taylor said, on December 19, 2005 6:14 AM:

As you surmise, Andrew, there's a completely different technique for adding video to your PSP. Please see:

http://www.askdavetaylor.com/about_psp_video.html

Also, "Who?", if you're running an OS other than WinXP or Mac OS X, you're basically on your own in terms of getting it to work. Otherwise, it should work once you remember to put the PSP in "USB CONNECT" mode once it's hooked up.

Dave Taylor said, on December 27, 2005 11:05 AM:

Patrick and Frederick, I'm afraid I don't know of any PSP drivers for Windows ME, so you might be out of luck. :-(

Debra, I bet you still have WMP set to rip and save your audio files in "WMA" format, which isn't what you want. See my recent article on setting Windows Media Player to produce MP3 files (which are compatible with the PSP):

Ismael, sounds like your system is configured to run a photo capture program each time an external device is connected. Darn tedious. Can't you just quit the program or even just ignore it? Then go to My Computer and find the PSP device?

ismael castillo said, on December 29, 2005 7:40 PM:

yeah u can ignore it but u know how your supposed to find 4 folders on your psp that say music photo and so on? well i only have 2 folders that say "save data" and "system". when I copy photos in EITHER of those two, my psp seems to be saving them, but i dont see them anywhere.

Dave Taylor said, on December 29, 2005 9:22 PM:

Jodi, try plugging the cable into a different port and, if possible, plug the PSP into a different PC too, just to compare what happens.

Gabriela, does your PSP show up on your desktop as "G:" then? And what do you see when you go inside it?

Finally, Ismael, you need to reformat your Memory Stick on the PSP itself (which, unfortunately, will lose all your saved games) so all the proper folders are created in the right order. Make sure you do the format *on the PSP* not on your computer.

Dave,

Great site and advice!!

Just purchased yesterday and had installed a sweet Eclipse Fujitsu Ten CD8445 in my Expedition http://www.eclipse-web.com/cd/cd8445.html car stereo receiver. Already even have my Sirius configured. It has a slot behind the front panel for the memory stick and can play and read WMA or MP3 files. Purchased a 1GB sony type memory stick today by Lexar at Wolff Camera here in Memphis. Now, I have maybe 700 I-Tunes on my pc. Question - seen your articles abot importing songs and getting them to format as MP3 vs WMA or i-tunes format and how to burn them on cds as MP3s.

How then do I take all these I-tunes formated files in the various folders and burn them directly to the memory stick - skipping the cd step? Seems I-Tunes only wants to burn them to my cd burner and nowhere else. May be a silly question but hopefully I don't have to burn to CDs first and then drag from the CDs to the memory stick as will take forever and what a complete nightmare. Is there not a more direct method? Know Apple is big on the song burn limit thing. My library is legit paid for and personal use only and no trouble on burn limits for me yet but I really want to max out the 1GB stick with as many I-Tunes as I can cram on it and stop messing with the CDs. I'm running XP home right now and latest version of I-Tunes. Have a Belkin high speed 8 in 1 media reader/writer on a USB cable to my pc. Help !!!! and Happy New Year!

I was wondering if it was possible to put videos purchased on iTunes on your psp. If you drag and drop, the psp says the data isn't supported. I tried transcoding it through psp video 9 and it didn't work.

When I Copy and Paste my mp3 music files onto the PSP MUSIC File, there is a message saying:

" Cannot Copy ( Song Title): Cannot fing specified file. Make sure you specify the correct path and file name."

Whats wrong?
