Sony PSP system version 2.0 + Web browser?

Yo Dave, I want to download the new PSP 2.0 software so I can try out the kewl Web browser, but don't know where to start. Do I need a USB wire or is it a wireless download? My connection always says there is a DNS error cause my access point has a WEP key or something ilke that, and third, where do I go to download the software? Please help me ASAP!

Dave's Answer:

Let's start with a warning, shall we? The 2.0 firmware has only been released into the Japanese market by Sony, so there is a chance that downloading and applying this 2.0 release will seriously mess up your Sony Playstation Portable (PSP) unit. I am not planning on doing this with my own PSP unit, for example, so that I'm tracking the American firmware releases. However, I have read lots of reports that people have this working with nary a glitch, so ...

There are a ton of new additions in this major firmware / operating system upgrade for the Sony PSP, however, so I'm certainly eager to have 2.0 available to us in the North American marketplace. Here's just a sampling of what's new:

  • Web browser now included!
  • jump function added to video playback
  • MP4/AVC playback support added
  • MP4 (AAC) and Wave (Linear PCM) formats now supported for music (which should let you use music downloaded from the iTunes Store, I think, but I'd love someone to test this theory and report back)
  • Wallpaper function added and you can now peruse TIFF, GIF, PNG and BMP format images too.
  • Various new 'settings' added to support new functionality.

Enough sales pitch, though! If you want to know more about what's included, read IGN, Macworld, Engadget or even PC World or Gamespot.

Let's get on with it...

The very first step you need to do is to download the new firmware "EBOOT.PBP" file.

Now follow these steps:

  1. Connect your PSP to your computer via the USB cable.
  2. Switch your PSP to "USB Connect" mode (see Sony PSP network update help for details on these first two steps)
  3. Go into the directory PSP/GAMES on your PC
  4. Create a new directory within that subdirectory called UPDATE making sure that you use all uppercase letters.
  5. Copy the EBOOT.PBP file into the new UPDATE subdirectory.
  6. Disconnect your PSP frmo your PC.
  7. On your Sony PSP, use the home button to get to your settings, then go to GAME --> Memory Stick.
  8. You should see the new EBOOT.PBP file: select it and your system should update the firmware and restart.

Hopefully you'll be doing fine with this...

If you want to read more comments and user experiences, the interesting site PSP Hacks has quite an extensive discussion of the 2.0 upgrade.

I'm definitely looking forward to 2.0, but a word processor? Without even a rudimentary keyboard? Man, I'm not that much of a glutton for punishment! :-)

Posted by: Zack at August 6, 2005 4:12 AM

I think step 3 should be PSP/Game

I had to create a directory called Game (note lower case) not GAMES

hi dave,

i have the web browser but it doesnt work it

says it cant find the access point wat is that

i mean im only 11 wat do i know how can i get it to work

bye

Posted by: nicky at August 9, 2005 2:55 AM

If you're 11 get your dad to do it (or tell your parents to stop spoiling you). Otherwise just wait for the North American release. And Zack, I'm not sure if those will work because most of them require some sort of install into Internet Explorer, and the PSP browser does not use an IE engine.

Firmware 2.0 for US PSPs delayed

Web browser, background wallpaper, photo sharing, and more will have to wait until August 15.

With PSP owners complaining about the dearth of games available for the multimedia handheld, many have been using the portable for things other than gaming. The months of June, July, and August yielded only five new games for the handheld, making the PSP's other functions (MP3 player, movie player, digital photo viewer) more essential.

Sony is making North American PSPs even more practical with the release of the PSP Firmware 2.0. However, gamers eager to hold a weekend PSP-Web-browsing party got some bad news today. A Sony spokesperson has confirmed that the North American edition of Firmware 2.0 won't be available until August 15. The company originally pegged today as the release date for the upgrade. A Japanese version was released last month.

The update's most significant addition is the Web browser application, which lets PSP owners tap into free wireless hot spots to surf the Internet. Other features include "enhanced video and audio playback, photo sharing options, broader network connectivity, and a customizable interface to suit each user's personal style."

im hearing alot about this firmware 2.0 what is it suppose to do?????

Posted by: Rashad at August 13, 2005 9:31 AM

The Japanese Version of the firmware does work on the US PSP because they are technically the same (like the DS) It is just the language that differs. On a website I saw they said Sony might be delaying the US 2.0 update until SEPTEMBER 1 to make it fair to the EU and the Australian markets.

Posted by: Bulls729 at August 14, 2005 5:58 AM

For Some reason, the PSP 2.0 Upgrade willnot conect for me... It gives me a Error message :

"The game could not be started
(80020148)"

Any Ideas? >.<

Posted by: Lamont at August 15, 2005 5:16 AM

do u have to dowload it to get it? if not then y hasnt it come out on wireless conection?

Posted by: tei at August 16, 2005 1:12 AM

I was a bit nervous about installing the japenese firmware 2.0 onto my north american psp, but it went without a hitch and the web browser is amazing. sony kept pushing the NA release back, its the 16th and its still not out yet :(

I hope everyone knows by now that there is a way to downgrade 2.0 back to 1.5. -> hero.

Posted by: super hero at January 17, 2006 4:50 PM

Assuming, as always, that you're willing to trust the very functionality of your Sony PSP to unknown hackers who might think it's cool to help you downgrade, but might also just think it's funny to help you "brick" your PSP. (Bricking is when the PSP is left non-functional and "about as useful as a brick". And yes, it happens)

Posted by: Dave Taylor at January 17, 2006 5:03 PM

ok someone PLEASE help. I've been reading all about downgrading your psp from 2.00 to 1.50. i know how to do it.. I've read the instructions a milion times and i do them right..when i click on the memory stick on game, it shows the 1.50 update but when i click on it, all it says is "this game could not be started"

I thought about it and i think it has to do with this: when i try to transfer the EBOOT.PHP file to the UPDATE folder, it locks up and says "cannot copy eboot:cannot find the specified file. make sure you specify the correct path and file name". but after i try it again, it shows that its already been transfered... so i dont know..thats probably rthe problem but someone please help. and I've already downloaded the eboot twice.

I have a PSP and I am trying to connect to the airport (wireless) at my house. I am configuring my PSP correctly (I think), but I get an error.
'A connection error has occurred. A connection to the access point could not be established. Check the security setting for network and try again.'
I am using my laptop wireless and I do pick up the access point. Any help you can give me would be great.

Ben Roldan,
You need to copy over the EBOOT file while plugged in to the A/C. I had the same issue. I plugged it into the A/C, then formatted the Duo card and tried copying the file and it worked. Good Luck.

Dave

Not being that much of a technical buff I followed your hints on downloading the eboot.pbp file from my laptop to my PSP (as I had recently purchased a game that required v2.60 to be installed).

Easy to follow and managed the download without any hitches whatsoever.

Thanks - top marks
