Sony Playstation Portable (PSP) Top Questions and Answers

Here are some of the most common questions that are submitted to Ask Dave Taylor about the Sony PSP, in no particular order:

• Can I download games if my PSP is running firmware version 2.5?

• Can I back up to an earlier version of the PSP firmware?

• How do I download games like Pac-Man onto my PSP?

• Where can I find free games / music / videos / movies for my PSP?

• I downloaded MP3 files onto my PSP, but now I can't find them?

• How do I convert normal music to MP3 format for my PSP?

• How can I have my Sony PSP talk with my Windows 98 PC?

Dave's Answer:

That's a lot of questions, so let's field them one-by-one, and at the end I'll also offer links to specific articles I've previous written on Ask Dave Taylor that are helpful for Sony PSP owners:

Can I download games if my PSP is running firmware version 2.5?

One of the greatest differences behind the scenes with the PSP firmware upgrade from 1.5 to 2.0 was that Sony added various checks in the code that apparently prohibit the unit from playing hacked or downloaded games. So as far as I can ascertain, no, you cannot run games you download onto your PSP if you're running any version of the firmware greater than 1.5.

Can I back up to an earlier version of the PSP firmware?

This is a logical follow-on question and the answer is "maybe". Sony doesn't offer any sort of official place where you can download earlier versions of the firmware or utilities that let you roll back to earlier firmware versions. On the other hand, various fan sites like psp-hacks.com have firmware download utilities like one that lets you back up from 2.0 to 1.5, but be careful: that won't work if you're running firmware 2.01 or 2.5. Further, there's a big risk in running software that modifies your PSP operating system but isn't from Sony: how do you know what it's really doing? What would you do if it broke your system? Or, what if it were a virus in disguise?

How do I download games like Pac-Man onto my PSP?

There are Web sites that offer illegal, hacked games that you can ostensibly download onto your PSP instead of paying for them, but, um, they're illegal and, as with unauthorized firmware downgrades, you really don't know what you're getting. Further, if you're running firmware 2.0 or higher, you probably won't be able to play the games anyway.

Having said that, if Sony were a really cool company, they'd encourage programmers to write new and interesting games that would run on the PSP, but not be part of the Sony approval and distribution system. There are lots of smaller, simpler games or ports of Open Source games, etc,. that would be cool to have on the PSP, but that'll never happen if every single game has to be formally tested and approved by Sony Corporate. Probably a pipe dream, alas.

Where can I find free games / music / videos / movies for my PSP?

My one word answer: Google.

Seriously, I'm not going to point you directly to these illegal download sites, but if you do want to try and find some of this material that you can drop onto your PSP, then I suggest you spend some time digging around on your favorite search engine. Good luck to you!

I downloaded MP3 files onto my PSP, but now I can't find them?

This is potentially the single most common question I see here at Ask Dave Taylor in the Sony PSP help category, and the answer is that the songs are probably sitting on your PSP, ready to play, but they don't show up in the MUSIC folder! They're in a subfolder: you need to find the entry in your MUSIC folder called "Memory Stick", then move into it by pressing the "X" button. Then all your songs magically appear.

This also holds true with photos you download too, by the way. They don't show up in your PHOTOS folder, they show up in the subfolder "Memory Stick".

How do I convert normal music to MP3 format for my PSP?

There's no simple way, but there are a number of different music format conversion utilities available from archive sites like Download.com. I suggest that you search for "MP3 converter" and you'll see there are quite a few choices.

The Sony PSP can only play MP3 or AAC format audio files, so if your music or audio is in any other format, you'll need to convert it before the PSP will be able to play them.

How can I have my Sony PSP talk with my Windows 98 PC?

It's amazing to me that people are still running Win98, but this is another common question I see, and the sad answer is that there's no built-in support for removable devices like the Sony PSP in Windows 98. Fortunately, there is a shareware alternative that a chap in Poland has written and makes available off his Web site: PSP Win98 Driver.

Caveat: I haven't tested this driver out, so I'm not sure that it works properly. Proceed with caution, and if someone does get it to work for them (or not!) please do let us know about it!

Is there some kind of external hard drive for the psp, so you can use it instead of a memory stick?

Posted by: rocco at December 10, 2005 6:03 PM

Rocco, that'd be a really great peripheral for someone to develop for the Sony PSP, but I haven't heard even the barest rumor of it existing, which is too bad. Memo to Sony: that's the main reason that people like Walt Mossberg at the Wall Street Journal never mention the PSP as a video player...

I need some help have brought a PSP told it was region free but got it and it will not play films but will play games on ringing sony it turns out it is a Region 3 is there any way of freeing up the region code

Posted by: jaz at December 30, 2005 6:37 PM

There's no way to free up the region encoding as far as I know, but this does highlight an important warning for people who are thinking that they can save money on a PSP by buying it through eBay or similar: make sure that it's coded for your own region, or you'll find that not only do UMD movies not play but that there are some games that appear to be regionally encoded too.

Posted by: josh at January 3, 2006 4:58 PM

I don't offer help with either downgrading firmware or downloading games onto your PSP. Perhaps someone else can pop up with a solution instead?

Posted by: Dave Taylor at January 3, 2006 5:08 PM

umm this is outdated you CAN run homebrew on 2.0 now dude, might wanna do a quick update ;-)

Posted by: Mike at January 3, 2006 8:31 PM

Sony's firmware keeps updating - it's now at 2.60 but will doubtless change yet again as Vongo comes fully online - and yes, the firmware downgrades keep tracking along too, Mike. That's the nature of things.

As always, be careful when you use unknown source firmware for your Sony PSP as it can possibly destroy the unit and make it a "brick".

Posted by: Shajuana at January 7, 2006 8:57 PM

Shajuana, I don't know how you can solve that problem unless you have a wired Internet connection and can piggyback off that with your own wifi base station (they're about $40-$50 at most stores). Good luck!

lol google Windows 98 drivers for PSP and download all of them to your computer then hook up your psp and your computer should automatically pick the best driver and install software for it. if Sony PSP Type A does not come up when you hook up your psp and put it in usb mode, then press the start button on computer go to settings control panel system device manager then scroll down and remove everything with a ? or ! next to it. restart and it should do it automatically. then go to my computer and there should be an E:\ drive there. (it may have a wierd picture, like a notepad) but it still works. lmgdfao! it works!

Posted by: Dennis at December 12, 2006 12:24 PM

Hi Dave! My PSP has the screen cracked (the outside protector, you know the black case that covers the whole PSP's front side) anyway,do you know if it's available.

Posted by: Jaime at February 7, 2007 6:11 PM

Dennis, no you can't change the text color as far as I know.

Jaime, I don't believe that the PSP is user serviceable. Instead, I suggest you seriously consider just sending your PSP in for service. Fortunately, you aren't stuck with Sony:

Dear Dave , I know your busy but you havent answer my question, anyways i just want to know, in ANYWAY can i use my PSP as a wireless modem for my computer?i have no Internet service for my pc but in a corner(yes,a real corner)of my house theres a internet signal with no security(WEP,etc) and i'm tired of saving link targets and turning on my pc just to view better the page,so please help me!

Posted by: Jaime at March 10, 2007 12:35 PM

Jyro, downgrading your PSP has some inherent dangers, even more than the rather clumsy firmware upgrade method that Sony uses. If you use the search engine here on my site and search for "psp downgrade" you'll find a couple of articles worth reading!

Howard, I don't generally support downloading games because with the exception of a few demos from Sony, the downloads are all bootleg and are illegal (regardless of what the download site might tell you).

Finally, Jaime, no, you can' tuse your PSP as a wireless modem for your computer, it just doesn't have that "base station" capability, though it'd be pretty cool if it did.

I have been trying different ways of downloading music onto the psp for my kids. Each time I plug in the USB, I automatically get "AutoPlay" folder that pulls up and it has different options. It has:
Mixed Content Options
Play using windows media player
transfer music using media import
copy disc
manage music
Import pictures
view pictures using windows
view pictures using windows media center
transfer pictures
import and view your photos
Genereal Options:
open folder for view files
speed up my system
Set Audio Defaults in Control Panel

which do i go under. When i read what you have on your website, i go under different folders. Please help me with these files.
Thank you
