How do I remove a Facebook status update?

I rowed with my girlfriend and posted something terrible on my status. Now we're friends again and I can't delete it...No option, remove or delete buttons...? HELP!

Dave's Answer:

Oh, I'm tempted to say "you can't" and let you be hoist on your own proverbial petard, as they say. Really, you should think about the fact that everything you post, everything you write, everything you say online is there permanently. You can delete it from your Wall, but it's in an archive somewhere, in the Facebook database, etc. It's the great duplicitousness of the Web: while things seem to be ephemeral, nothing really is. Everything has permanence.

But...

It's not really my job to be a relationship counselor or to lecture you (or is it too late? :-) so let's look at how to remove a Wall post / status update on Facebook, shall we?

What's confusing is that you can only delete your status updates on your own profile page, not on the news feed page where you see what you've written intermingled with what your friends and associates are involved with. Let me show you...

Okay, so maybe I shouldn't be so critical of Susie, but still, she does wear weird clothes! Nonetheless, I want to remove this update, but as you can see from where the cursor is located, there's no delete "X" to make it easy.

Instead, I need to click on my name on the top left:

Once I'm on my own Wall, then I can see the status update again:

More importantly, I can delete it:

No, really, Facebook, I want to delete this wall post and avoid having poor Susie feel even more embarrassed than she does having to dress in such odd clothes:

Susie aside, now you can see how to make that angry status update you wrote vanish without a trace. Good luck!

I have an unwanted posting on my facebook wall. It is an ad for weight loss with acaia berries. It appears to have been sent by a friend, but I suspect my friend's profile was hijacked for this. If I hover my mouse over the text of the ad, I don't get any "x" to the right hand side that will let me delete the post. I also tried clicking on the timestrip of the post, but that didn't bring up any option button to let me delete it. And while my own Option button appears on my wall, as far as I can tell, that won't let me delete the ad either. I hate ads like this and want it gone. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Neither of these solutions worked. That "options" tab never shows on my personal page.

I can not delete my statuss' anymore. I used to be able to use that hidden X to clean up my page a month at a time. Now no X's, no options tab, I have looked on my page and the news feed for these pathways. I am beginning to think FB has taken this privilage away from me. Help?

You know.... this is advice for at least 3 Facebook incarnations ago.
Can't this now USELESS information be taken away and replaced with the directions for the CURRENT Facebook (shitty) way of doing things?!

Starbucks coffee cup I do have a lot to say, and questions of my own for that matter, but first I'd like to say thank you, Dave, for all your helpful information by buying you a cup of coffee!

I do have a comment, now that you mention it!
