Quickly convert text to all lowercase in Safari?

I'm fixing up some data records in our customer database and find that I am constantly converting uppercase letters to lowercase letters. The entire system is Web-based, so I'm working in Mac Safari. Is there some way to speed things up or automate the conversion of the text?

Dave's Answer:

Sounds like a super tedious task, and not very fun. At first blush, I thought that you might be on your own or might need to copy the text, paste it into an editor with this sort of transliteration (to use the fancy word for converting text from one form to another) tool, and then copying it back, but then I realized that Safari in Mac OS X, like many other apps, has access to the Mac Services suite.

Never heard of it? Yeah, most people haven't. In fact, I usually forget it's there too, but there are a bunch of handy little tools that can make working with selected text or images quite a bit easier in Mac OS X.

A good place to start is Apple --> Services --> Preferences, actually, where you'll see that there are a ton of nifty capabilities, including the ability to automatically create an email message with the selection already pasted into the message buffer and even one to translate the selection into Chinese!

That's not what we need, however, because the default set of Services includes "Make Lower Case". Let me show you...

First off, while I was in Safari writing a blog post about web page markup here's what I was looking at:

safari transform lowercase 1

To convert it all to lowercase, all I had to do was select the passage I wanted to transform then Control-Click in the selected region:

safari transform lowercase 2

As you can see, one of the options is "Transformations" and within that submenu is "Make Lower Case". I selected it and almost instantaneously...

safari transform lowercase 3

All converted to lowercase as I'd desire. Very slick, very fast.

While we're talking about the Services options in Mac OS X, I would like to encourage you to make a selection on screen, either a word, phrase or paragraph, then explore the many, many options available. Now try it again with something editable and you'll see even more. Very handy!
