Porn stars want to be my friend on MySpace?

This is weird: i got a friend request from a scantily clad young woman today but when I look at her profile, I can't see what we have in common other than that we're both female. She's talking about being a virgin and yet has plenty of rather revealing photos of herself and links off to some outside site that I'm afraid to visit. is this common?

Dave's Answer:

I only recent experienced a similar friend request myself, so I know exactly what you're talking about and you're right, it appears that amateur and, most likely, professional porn and adult actors and actresses are indeed utilizing MySpace to extend their, um, network (e.g. sucker you into helping them gain more visibility).

Here's what I saw on my friend request list:

MySpace Profile: porn character Ashley?

She's attractive, but who is she? Well, clicking on her name reveals a profile that's reasonable enough:

"Hey!! My name is Ashley and im from Boulder! I am currently attending the University of Colorado to become a dentist! I'm 20 years old and love dancing! I really dont go out much, but when I do I can get crazy when im with my girls! I wanna thanks Cindy and Laura for being the best friends a girl can ask for! DONT message me saying anything disgusting or asking to go out before I even talk to you. Well I don't really know what else to say about me! I have more pics of me if you want to see my website. Its like a hobby of mine so its completely free to register, just tell me what ya think!"

The problem with Ashley's profile here is that the Web site referenced in "see my website" is the domain http://www.freevirgincams.com/ashley/

I haven't been to the site, but I don't think I need to click on the link to be confident that it's not the site of a 20 year old dental student but rather a budding porn star who likely has nothing to do with Colorado or any college.

Did I have her join my network as a MySpace friend? What would you do?

Suffice to say, if you get friend requests from people that you don't want as friends, don't accept them! Like any other networking site, it's best to be more selective, at least in my opinion.

More liekly, this is a professional site that has set up several fake MySpace accounts and is using the "friends" feature to spam other users. The obvious connection to marketing is in the /ashley/ portion of the url. While this may be an actual, personal page on that domain, it is more likely that it is a method for the webmaster to easily view their logs and find out which fake profile brings in the most hits, then tweak the other profiles to increase their effectiveness.

I never noticed the dry-erase markers down here at the bottom of the page before. That's pretty clever.

"Ashley" has several hundred accounts on MySpace. It's just some typical adult web cam spam. Here's a little write-up I did about this a while back:

I made a mistake and accepted a friend request from a porn site. I have deleted them from my site, however, want to delete me from theirs. Is there a way to do this? Help please! I'm new and learning fast, or so I thought.

Thanks

Gina

Henry, good luck! :-)

Gina, I don't think there's any way to have someone else remove you from their friends list...
