I’m confused by my Nokia Lumia Dave: I download apps and games, but can’t find them afterwards. How do I just pin them or make them a new “tile” on the start screen?
This is something I’ve written about before because I think it’s such a common problem for people just starting in the Windows Phone world. It’s baffling, but it’s rather part of the Windows 8 experience on every device: you no longer have a “desktop” for aliases to applications, so when you install one, where does it go?
In the Windows Phone world, turns out that there’s a second screen with all your Apps listed, but you need to know to swipe over to find it, or, as you say, those new apps, those shiny games, they’re all missing in action. What baffles me is that the app installation process doesn’t include a step where it asks “Pin to Start Screen?” or similar. What an easy solution that would be!
But here we are. So let’s jump in.
I just downloaded the super slick Nokia app “App Social” [get app social here] and, just as you’ve experienced, can’t find it on my Lumia 1020.
In fact, the home screen looks like this:
No app. No sign of an app. No indicator of what to do either.
That’s okay, swipe your finger right to left and… poof! look what shows up:
Hey, it’s a list of all the apps on the phone!
You can see “App Social” is the second app listed. Okay, good.
Now what you might be tempted to do is tap on it, and that’s fine, but it’ll launch the app, not let you pin its tile to the start screen.
Instead, tap and hold down your finger on the app until the options menu shows up:
You can see the desired option there on the top: “pin to start”.
Righto. Do so by tapping on the appropriate spot on the phone.
Now at the bottom of the start screen is the new tile for the new app. Finally:
Turns out that “App Social” has an active tile, so the image changes as you watch it (and even more so once you have it all hooked up). Still, you can see that there are two buttons also shown. The top right is the “unpin” feature – particularly useful if you decide that you don’t want some of the tiles that are on your Windows phone 8 screen by default, and the inward pointing arrow on the lower right that lets you resize the tile to make it smaller.
I don’t want to do either. I want to move the tile to the top of the start screen! To do that, I tap and drag the tile upward, finally ending up with this:
Another tap on the tile or of the HOME button on the Nokia Lumia 1020 itself and the customization mode ends, leaving the phone with the new app bright and cheery on the top of the entire start screen.
