PC to Sony PSP: How do I download music?

Dave, Help! How do I download music from my HP Windows computer to a Sony PSP computer? The system says it is downloaded but the PSP says that there are no tracks available?

Dave's Answer:

Hmmm... I'm trying to figure out whether researching this question would justify me buying a Sony PSP and claiming it as a tax deduction on next year's taxes (a curiously apropos question since today is April 15th, when we file income taxes here in the United States). :-)

More seriously, here are the steps you'll need to go through to get your music to download successful from your Windows PC to your new Sony PSP unit:

  1. Connect the PSP to your PC with a USB cable. (about $10: buy a USB cable for your PSP)
  2. Press the "home" button on the PSP (it's a tiny button to the lower left of the screen) then use the left-right directional buttons to find "Settings", then the up-down buttons to find "USB Connection" on the PSP.
  3. Press the "X" button (you got it, the round button with the "X" on it) and your PSP should display "USB Connection".
  4. In a moment or two your computer should tell you that a new USB device has been connected, then show you a new generic hard drive, usually E: or F:
  5. Click on the drive letter that corresponds to the PSP unit.
  6. Now create a new folder on that drive and name it "psp".
  7. Within the new "psp" folder create another folder, and name it "music".
  8. Copy your desired mp3 files into the new "music" folder.
  9. When you're done copying your desired music tracks, press the "O" button on the PSP to get out of USB connect mode.
Now you're ready to go! Use the left-right arrows to move to the music area, then the up-down arrows to find "Memory Stick". Chose that folder by pressing the "X" button again, and you should be able to find all your favorite music!

Note that the PSP running older firmware (firmware is the "operating system" of the PSP) does not support any Windows Media formats i.e WMA & WMV, so any music you have in that format must be converted to MP3 before copying to your PSP. Fortunately, Sony's very own Image Converter 2.1 can convert all your music with a very simple GUi and will then also manage all the measuring and transfering for you too.

If Image Converter doesn't seem up to snuff, then there are various other solutions for converting audio files, including the free Windows application Switch, written up here: How to convert WMA audio files into MP3 audio files.

If you really want to play WMA format audio files, make sure you have the latest version of the firmware from Sony (see below for update instructions).

That should get you up and rockin' in no time!

Hi,
I have seen a few people wanting to run audio files over their home network. I could not find much about this online so wrote this little script to create RSS feeds (XML files) that your psp can link to and pull the music over your network.

You need to have IIS running on your home pc that contains the music, enable .asp scripting and write permissions on the folder that contains the script below.

Save the script below as index.asp and call it using the ip address of your local web server (IIS).

Once you have your IIS working, edit the script below to suit your network IP address and location of your music files.

Run the script via your pc or your PSP by clicking the link.
I have found that XML files seem to limit the items to 100 per file, so the script will split up the songs into groups of 100 per file.

Using your PSP click the links to the RSS files and add them to your psp.
Now you can use your psp to play the song files listed.

Good luck........................

Hi, Dave. A lonnnnng question--not a comment--from a music moron: I have almost no $ at this time and don't want (to carry) an MP3 player unless I'm forced to get one. I have WMP 10 and happily learned to start downloading only the single tracks I wanted to my PC from the MSN Music site just before they hamstrung me with the changeover. I don't want a subscription and just want to listen to/burn my own compilation CDs with one player--hoping it could be WMP. The music I listen to is ecclectic and I haven't even found much of it yet on most sites (40's big band, vintage dance, 70's Christian worship....) I tried Napster before MSN Music and that was how I found out I couldn't download to WMP (and became suspicious of every other site). And I can't figure out if I can buy from any site (even Rhapsody or Zune) without using their player. Please help! Going under!!!

I converted WMA music files to MP3!

I used your instructions above, using Switch, which worked for any songs without protected content. For the wma files with the lisence protecting them:

I burned the songs to a cd using Windows Media Player. Then I imported the disc into iTunes. Then I opened the iTunes file where the songs were saved. Now they are m4a files instead of WMA. The I tried to convert them to mp3 with switch. Switch wanted me to go to www.nch.com.au/components/aacdec.exe and download and install that file - which took about 2 seconds. Then Switch was able to convert the songs to mp3.

Jim said, on February 16, 2007 10:33 AM:

For the no tracks errors, seems a depth of two folders is all that's allowed. For example, if under your Music folder, you had a group name folder, then an album name folder, then the mp3 tracks, the PSP would indicate no tracks found for the group name folder. But, if you delete the group name folder, then copy the album name folder (with the tracks in it) to the Music folder, the tracks are recognized, and playable.

why do when i hook my psp usb to my computer it says hard drive G?

Dave Taylor said, on May 7, 2007 7:49 PM:

Amer, and others, if you have done every step, and if you are working with original mp3 files that you have already tested on your PC and know they work, I have no idea why your PSP would be complaining about it. Note that I have a variety of different tutorials on working with the PSP and music on this site too. Check out:

http://www.askdavetaylor.com/about_psp_music.html

Luster, it doesn't really matter what drive letter is assigned to your PSP: that's just a function of how many different devices you have configured / hooked up. If you have two drives, and one is partitioned into two virtual drives, for example, that could be C: D: and E: right there, and your CDROM might be F: and your DVD drive (if they're separate like they are on one of my PCs) could then be G:. Hook up a PSP and it'd be H: !!!

Ok, Checklist:
1. Is the psp connected to your computer? (is there a wire going into the top of your psp and the other wire in the front/back of your computer?)
2. Hit HOME which is on the bottom of your psp heres how it looks [x[__]::] on the bottom under monitor:
[HOME] [-]VOL[+] PSP [] [musicsymble][SELECT][START]
CLICK HOME
3. then scroll up and click "USB Connection" then
4. watch computer screen and wait for "psp connected" "driver installed" that stuff
5. THEN FOLLOW INFO ON THIS GUIDE ABOVE
=)

Here's the key that I think many of the posters are missing: If your music is organized by artist > album, the PSP will not find the tracks. Move the MP3 files under the artist folder (remove the album folders) and the PSP will be able to play the files.
