PC to Sony PSP: How do I download music?Dave, Help! How do I download music from my HP Windows computer to a Sony PSP computer? The system says it is downloaded but the PSP says that there are no tracks available? Hmmm... I'm trying to figure out whether researching this question would justify me buying a Sony PSP and claiming it as a tax deduction on next year's taxes (a curiously apropos question since today is April 15th, when we file income taxes here in the United States). :-) More seriously, here are the steps you'll need to go through to get your music to download successful from your Windows PC to your new Sony PSP unit:
Note that the PSP running older firmware (firmware is the "operating system" of the PSP) does not support any Windows Media formats i.e WMA & WMV, so any music you have in that format must be converted to MP3 before copying to your PSP. Fortunately, Sony's very own Image Converter 2.1 can convert all your music with a very simple GUi and will then also manage all the measuring and transfering for you too. If Image Converter doesn't seem up to snuff, then there are various other solutions for converting audio files, including the free Windows application Switch, written up here: How to convert WMA audio files into MP3 audio files. If you really want to play WMA format audio files, make sure you have the latest version of the firmware from Sony (see below for update instructions). That should get you up and rockin' in no time! What I do know is that I need a bigger memory stick not the 32mb that comes with it and that I need a USB cable which I got when I bought the system. Do I need anything else? Just the other day I tried to transfer the music videos by connecting the USB to PC and PSP and right clicked on a music video and selected Copy to CD or device. And it was copying and I did have my memory stick in the PSP but when it did reach 100% the PC said error did not complete burn or something. And when I was in the home screen of my PSP I notice that memory capactity was not 32mb any more it was 21mb. And there's nothing under anything photos, videos, music, or games. Bobby, that doesn't help us figure out what's going on. What steps did you do that worked, and what didn't work? What do you mean by "still does not work"? Are you saying that the songs aren't showing up on the PSP even though it appears you copied them? If so, make sure you go to MUSIC then *click on* "Memory Stick" to get into that folder and see your MP3 files (why they don't just show up without having to go into the Memory Stick escapes me). joe said, on September 14, 2005 4:40 AM:

I got the music on my psp and i can play it. The only problem is is that i can only have like 6 songs on the memory stick. Is there some way to make the files smaller or do i just need a bigger memory card? Dave Taylor said, on September 25, 2005 5:33 AM:
Bob, you just need a bigger memory stick, I'm sorry to report. If you figure that the average music file is even 7MB in size, then a 32MB Memory Stick only has about 29MB available after file system formatting, etc,. and that means you can fit four songs on the memory stick. Yeah, for $150 get a 512MB stick and you'll have space for about 70 songs, which is a bit better! Kevin Deaton said, on September 25, 2005 5:54 PM:
I downloaded the music fine and copied it to my psp. It said it copied and the space is taken up on my memory stick but when i try to play the music it says There Are No Tracks. What do i do. Plz help me. Nobody special said, on September 25, 2005 7:55 PM:
lol, after reading a few comments, it makes me wonder if the people who ask "where do i buy a usb cable?" or "whats the generic drive?, "how come my update wont work?". First of all, you select usb mode on the GUI and press cross to enter it, not circle, then to exit, press circle. Also has anyone actually read they're psp manuals? And one last thing, you dont want to update your psp, all they are is firmware updates, which means, put simply, a firewall. Now you might be thinking, "Awsome, a firewall! My psp is safe!", not true, all it is doing is stopping you from playing homebrew applications, for instance you cant play a good game of chess on the road if you update, or you cant play some good old Mario Bros. or Metroid, or Zelda using emulators for the respective systems. Now some think that playing a game on an emulator is stealing, and i agree, but if the game is no longer sold, then what? Well, I guess that means your deprived from playing the game, unless you want to steal it from someone else, but that is rather foolish. Playing a game on an emulator is perfectly fine if the game is no longer sold, because the company no longer makes a profit because they stopped making it. Now, I do beleive I've been on a bit of a rant and i must take my leave, cya. P.S. you have a manual for a reason, use it. Quentin said, on September 26, 2005 1:54 AM:

Amazing. Reading a lot of the questions above makes me realize that a lot of you are out of your depth relating to connecting, converting files, etc. i.e. simply using PC's! It is not that hard. Try typing your question into say, google. Forget windows media player, etc. this has nothing to do with converting files to MP3 format and downloading them via USB. By the way "GUI" Graphical User Interface......a window! dur. Dave Taylor said, on October 19, 2005 2:51 PM:
Josh, I'm afraid that MP3's, like any other music files, take up space, perhaps more than you'd expect. A typical person with a 32MB Memory Stick appears to only fit about one CD's worth of music before the space runs out. If you have 1.3Gb, you just have a lot of music (Of course, I have about 3GB on my computer, but I also have an iPod that can take that amount of disk space without a hiccup :) Brent B. said, on October 21, 2005 12:15 AM:

I'm not sure what you mean by "groups": as far as I know, the PSP can only handle one level of folders, not subfolders. Also remember that you'll see "Memory Stick" as your Music entry: you have to *click* on that to see the individual tracks you've downloaded. chad said, on October 28, 2005 2:06 AM:

Samantha, if you can't create a folder on the PSP Memory Stick then you might have flipped the 'read only' switch on the stick itself. Check: it's a very small slider on the device (really tiny). If not, make sure you're logged into your Windows system as administrator and try again. Tim and Brittany: You can either use software like PSPWare (use the search box on this site to find more information about PSPWare, it's a cheap shareware app that makes managing data on your PSP a breeze) or find the actual MP3 files (and, yes, they really should be in that format, not another music format like AAC or WMA) and copy them into the MUSIC folder on the PSP itself. darren said, on November 6, 2005 4:58 PM:

ok heres the easiest way to get any songs onto ur psp, download sonic stage(made by sony, used for sony mp3 players), then when u get done installing it when u open it up have it search your computer for music files, then click transfer, then just scroll up and down, click the song u want, click the right arrow, and its transfering to ur psp, u can edit ur folders and names on the right side of the screen. nate dotson said, on November 8, 2005 12:00 AM:

If you're having problems, it might be because you have an older version of Windows (the PSP really prefers Windows XP or Mac OS X) or a bad USB port on your computer or a bad USB cable, all of which I've heard of as problems. A great way to debug this problem: try to plug your PSP into someone else's computer and see if it works better. matthew said, on November 18, 2005 3:01 PM:

The problem may be that I only have Win.Me.,anyhow-It said that a few songs were complete, but after doing what you said- mem/music, it says-Memory Stick/ free space 0, and Music/0 tracks. I had space before I downloaded, so what happened? Can I delete the music?{it reads-this folder cannot be deleted /contains data of types other than music}.Can you advise?! Thanks, Jamie T-MONEY said, on November 25, 2005 12:41 PM:

how do you do step 8 because i can not find where my mp3s are Dave Taylor said, on November 28, 2005 4:20 AM:
Tim and everyone, assuming you have your music files in the correct format (MP3, not WMP) and transfer them into your MUSIC folder on the PSP properly, then you'll find them in the "Memory Stick" folder in MUSIC on the PSP when you've unhooked everything. It's very confusing, because if you're like me, you probably expect the songs to be listed in the MUSIC folder itself, but instead you just see the entry "Memory Stick". Dig into it, and I bet you find all your favorite songs ready to play.
I do have a comment, now that you mention it!Check This Out Too... |
