PC to Sony PSP: How do I download music?Dave, Help! How do I download music from my HP Windows computer to a Sony PSP computer? The system says it is downloaded but the PSP says that there are no tracks available? Hmmm... I'm trying to figure out whether researching this question would justify me buying a Sony PSP and claiming it as a tax deduction on next year's taxes (a curiously apropos question since today is April 15th, when we file income taxes here in the United States). :-) More seriously, here are the steps you'll need to go through to get your music to download successful from your Windows PC to your new Sony PSP unit:
Note that the PSP running older firmware (firmware is the "operating system" of the PSP) does not support any Windows Media formats i.e WMA & WMV, so any music you have in that format must be converted to MP3 before copying to your PSP. Fortunately, Sony's very own Image Converter 2.1 can convert all your music with a very simple GUi and will then also manage all the measuring and transfering for you too. If Image Converter doesn't seem up to snuff, then there are various other solutions for converting audio files, including the free Windows application Switch, written up here: How to convert WMA audio files into MP3 audio files. If you really want to play WMA format audio files, make sure you have the latest version of the firmware from Sony (see below for update instructions). That should get you up and rockin' in no time! What do you mean by "still does not work"? Are you saying that the songs aren't showing up on the PSP even though it appears you copied them? If so, make sure you go to MUSIC then *click on* "Memory Stick" to get into that folder and see your MP3 files (why they don't just show up without having to go into the Memory Stick escapes me). The only problem is is that i can only have like 6 songs on the memory stick. Is there some way to make the files smaller or do i just need a bigger memory card? Posted by: Bob Smith at September 25, 2005 4:24 AMBob, you just need a bigger memory stick, I'm sorry to report. If you figure that the average music file is even 7MB in size, then a 32MB Memory Stick only has about 29MB available after file system formatting, etc,. and that means you can fit four songs on the memory stick. Yeah, for $150 get a 512MB stick and you'll have space for about 70 songs, which is a bit better! Posted by: Dave Taylor at September 25, 2005 5:33 AMI downloaded the music fine and copied it to my psp. Posted by: Kevin Deaton at September 25, 2005 5:54 PMlol, after reading a few comments, it makes me wonder if the people who ask "where do i buy a usb cable?" or "whats the generic drive?, "how come my update wont work?". First of all, you select usb mode on the GUI and press cross to enter it, not circle, then to exit, press circle. Also has anyone actually read they're psp manuals? And one last thing, you dont want to update your psp, all they are is firmware updates, which means, put simply, a firewall. Now you might be thinking, "Awsome, a firewall! My psp is safe!", not true, all it is doing is stopping you from playing homebrew applications, for instance you cant play a good game of chess on the road if you update, or you cant play some good old Mario Bros. or Metroid, or Zelda using emulators for the respective systems. Now some think that playing a game on an emulator is stealing, and i agree, but if the game is no longer sold, then what? Well, I guess that means your deprived from playing the game, unless you want to steal it from someone else, but that is rather foolish. Playing a game on an emulator is perfectly fine if the game is no longer sold, because the company no longer makes a profit because they stopped making it. Now, I do beleive I've been on a bit of a rant and i must take my leave, cya. P.S. you have a manual for a reason, use it. Amazing. Reading a lot of the questions above makes me realize that a lot of you are out of your depth relating to connecting, converting files, etc. i.e. simply using PC's! It is not that hard. Try typing your question into say, google. Forget windows media player, etc. this has nothing to do with converting files to MP3 format and downloading them via USB. By the way "GUI" Graphical User Interface......a window! dur. Posted by: Tricky at October 19, 2005 1:27 PMJosh, I'm afraid that MP3's, like any other music files, take up space, perhaps more than you'd expect. A typical person with a 32MB Memory Stick appears to only fit about one CD's worth of music before the space runs out. If you have 1.3Gb, you just have a lot of music (Of course, I have about 3GB on my computer, but I also have an iPod that can take that amount of disk space without a hiccup :) Posted by: Dave Taylor at October 19, 2005 2:51 PMYa, How do you get your music videos, over to your psp. What I did was clicking the file and drag it to the memory stick icon on my window, but then once I got to my psp it said corrupted file, or it would'nt even show up. Check: it's a very small slider on the device (really tiny). If not, make sure you're logged into your Windows system as administrator and try again. Tim and Brittany: You can either use software like PSPWare (use the search box on this site to find more information about PSPWare, it's a cheap shareware app that makes managing data on your PSP a breeze) or find the actual MP3 files (and, yes, they really should be in that format, not another music format like AAC or WMA) and copy them into the MUSIC folder on the PSP itself. Please tell me what else is needed besides a freakin USB cable because I ain't getting no music. Posted by: Kebo James at November 17, 2005 2:47 AMIf you're having problems, it might be because you have an older version of Windows (the PSP really prefers Windows XP or Mac OS X) or a bad USB port on your computer or a bad USB cable, all of which I've heard of as problems. A great way to debug this problem: try to plug your PSP into someone else's computer and see if it works better. Help me please!! how do you do step 8 because i can not find where my mp3s are Posted by: Tim at November 28, 2005 12:39 AMTim and everyone, assuming you have your music files in the correct format (MP3, not WMP) and transfer them into your MUSIC folder on the PSP properly, then you'll find them in the "Memory Stick" folder in MUSIC on the PSP when you've unhooked everything. It's very confusing, because if you're like me, you probably expect the songs to be listed in the MUSIC folder itself, but instead you just see the entry "Memory Stick". Dig into it, and I bet you find all your favorite songs ready to play. Posted by: Dave Taylor at November 28, 2005 4:20 AMwhat's GUI? Posted by: Hallye at November 29, 2005 1:25 AMBy GUI I mean the "graphical user interface", but really, when I read the directions again, what I should say is that you need to use the little HOME button to get to the top level menu on the PSP itself, then use the left or right arrow to move to the SETTINGS option, then use the up or down arrow to find "USB CONNECT". Once you're there (again, on your PSP screen) select the USB CONNECT by pushing once on the "X" button, the bottom of the four buttons on the right side of the PSP screen. Hope that's a bit clearer! It'll delete you game saves (unfortunately) but it'll also build the correct filesystem and folders onto the device so you won't have to worry about them in the future. Please see: http://www.askdavetaylor.com/about_psp_memory_format.html Posted by: Dave Taylor at February 23, 2006 12:51 AMDave, I have a psp with a 2gb memory stick, I followed your instructions for getting music on the stick and it worked great. Then when my little lad turned the psp on, the memory stick had dissapeared, the psp kept showing no memory stick inserted. We tried to reformat the stick but again the psp said there wasn't a stick inserted. Can you help? Posted by: keith Jones at February 26, 2006 10:26 AMSounds like you have a bad stick, I'm sorry to say, Keith. I'd make sure it's "seated" properly in the PSP (pull it out, push it in again, gently but firmly) and if you still can't get it to work, get it replaced. Posted by: Dave Taylor at February 26, 2006 8:33 PMPlease Help! I've formatted the memory stick in the PSP and I've downloaded some free mp3 converter software (I think!). What do I do now to copy and convert some music files from my husbands itunes music library to my sons PSP. Once you download the converter software there are no instructions as to how to use it. After reading this page,I corrected my mistake and converted some tracks to the correct format - one that PSP can see (even though wma files can be transferred, they remain 'invisible i.e. unplayable. Your memory gets used up and can't play music or see the tracks) I used 'limeware.com' (as recommended above). I have now listened to tracks on PSP for the first time since purchase 6 months ago - wow.... this information is so frustratingly hard to get and use.... I spent 22 mg on music and that's almost all my memory. help me out here. Posted by: killman at April 25, 2006 9:56 AMBaBz, sounds to me like you might just not have enough space on your Memory Stick for the files: audio takes up a few megabytes per song, and video, man, that can be pretty huge: a 90 minute video can easily be 400MB or larger. Killman, most often I find that you have the files on your PSP but rather than it just show you the tracks, it makes you select the Memory Stick once you're in the MUSIC area of the device. So go to MUSIC, look for Memory Stick, then select it by pressing the "X" button. Then, hopefully, the audio tracks will be visible! Posted by: Dave Taylor at April 25, 2006 11:07 AMHello i read this and i am wondering on how to copy the data! Yo Dave can I put music in my psp from a ipod?? If yes how?? Posted by: sylvio at April 26, 2006 4:34 PMDAVE i copy musics to my psp but when I go to music on my psp it says there are no tracks. I have coped every file of my ipod in to my psp memory stick like you sad on step (8)but still it does not work!!!please can you help me?? Posted by: sylvio at April 26, 2006 4:47 PMSylvio, you can, but you'd need to copy the music off the iPod or out of iTunes, then copy it onto the PSP. Try this link: http://www.askdavetaylor.com/about_itunes_mp3.html And in terms of not finding the tracks, could it be in the wrong format? iPods often work with AAC format which isn't (yet) supported by the PSP device itself.
