Network Update on my Sony PSP doesn't work?

How do I get the Network Update feature on my Sony PSP to work? I've tried what Sony suggests but it never seems to like my wireless Wi-Fi connection, so I can't ever get to the network to look for any sort of update!

Dave's Answer:

Since I first got my Sony PSP I've also been trying to get this to work, with zero success. While it appears to support wireless encryption protocol (WEP), the encryption key that works fine for my Mac and PC fails on the PSP with cryptic errors like 80410D09 and 80410D07.

Then in exasperation I went to a public wifi access point at a local cafe and tried to connect using their wireless network, one that didn't have any sort of password. And it worked, first time!

The first problem I had to figure out, however, was when I tried to connect I was promptly informed that WLAN Switch Is Turned Off on the PSP screen. After some digging, I found out that the small silver slide switch on the lower left edge controls whether the PSP can access a wireless network (WLAN) or not: slide it up and you'll be wireless ready.

To configure a network access point, press Home then move to Network Update, then you get to the configuration screen that asks for the WLAN Settings (the default is to enter an SSID), choose "Scan" instead and let the PSP identify all the wireless networks it can see. Choose whichever one has the strongest signal and indicates "None" (not "WEP") for "Encryption".

Choose all the default configuration settings and you should promptly be asked to press the X button to save your new access profile. Do so, then select it again and, if your connection works you'll see "Checking Server...", then, if there's an update available, the PSP shows:

Network Update has found a later version.
To download, insert a Memory Stick with at least 14MB of free space
and press the X button.

Press the X button and you'll see "Downloading..." and a warning not to turn the unit off or remove the Memory Stick while downloading, then the download starts. I timed it on my system: it took a bit more than ten minutes for the download,PSP operating system version 1.52.

When the download succeeds, you'll now see:

Download completed.
The update is now available on your
Memory Stick.
To install now, press the x button.
To install later, go to [Game].

Pressing the X button restarts the PSP unit then automatically starts the PSP Update ver 1.52 and gives you a single option: Start. To start the actual upgrade, I again push the X button.

Then, to my surprise, even though the unit is actually plugged into the wall, I receive:

The update cannot be started.
The battery level is low.
Charge the battery and then try again.

I let the unit charge for an hour, then found the update by going to Game, Memory Stick and pressing the X button. This revealed "PSP Update ver. 1.52" which I started with one more press of the X button.

This time it decided that my battery was sufficiently charged (and, yes, it was still plugged in too) and I got:

The following updates will be added:
• Revisions to strengthen security were added.
• UMB MUSIC can now be played under [Music]

Since I don't have any UMD music, I can only assume that this is so Sony can sell UMD's as an alternative to music CDs. Would anyone buy them? I am doubtful, but that's another story entirely...

I pressed the right arrow button, as instructed, and was shown:

Do not turn off the power, disconnect
the AC adaptor or remove the
Memory Stick during update, as doing
so may cause the system to malfunction.
Once the update is started you cannot
go back to the previous version of the
system software.
Press the X button to start.

Now it switches to "Installing..." and took approximately 90 seconds to install.

Finally, finally, we're ready to restart the PSP: "Update completed. Press the X button to restart."

And so, I press X and the unit restarts and appears to be fully functional and everything's intact with the new, updated, system software. Congrats to Sony for this process - once you figure it out, it's a simple and elegant way to keep the software on your PSP fully up-to-date.

One final tip: to delete the unneeded update, go to Game, Memory Stick and press X to get to the PSP Update, then press the triangle button to pull up three options for this file: Start, Delete and Information. Move down to Delete and press the X button. Done!

I have tried various things including copying the update EBOOT file to the psp/game directort etc etc..... the latest is I am getting an error saying .. 'The system configuration of this psp blah blah ( DRNFFFFFFCD).... What do I need to do???

My problem it's when I start the update, it shows me the license agreement for the psp ( I accept) then not to trun off the power...
i press x, but the update is downloading and it shows me that the memory stick could not be read. What can i do?

thx

Dave Taylor said, on June 18, 2009 9:19 AM:

Jiggy, is it possible you don't have a Memory Stick in your PSP or that it's bad or not formatted for the PSP? Do you have a pal whose memory stick you could borrow for the upgrade? The file's pretty small and once you were done, you could pull the stick out and return it: maybe 30 minutes total elapsed time? Good luck.

Jiggy said, on June 18, 2009 6:45 PM:

well the memory stick is "Memory Stick PRO Duo" from san disk

I'LL try again and if it deosn't work i'll buy a new mem stick

So, i had the same problem with battery being too low to install the update. Where as you charged your battery for an hour and got it to work, i let my battery charge for 3 HOURS and it still says battery is too low. what do i do dave??

Dave Taylor said, on June 20, 2009 6:50 PM:

Jiggy, where did you buy the memory stick? I'd take it back.

Bervyn, if you downloaded games onto your PSP, then you're on your own, neither Sony nor I support this sort of hacking here.

John, if your PSP is *plugged in* can't you install the update?

Hi Dave,
My PSP has been modded. I purchased Def Jam New York on my PS3 for my PSP. I copied it and now the PSP doesn't play it because it says I need system software version 5.51 or later. I'm running 5.00.
I've tried doing "Network Update," but when I connect to my network, IP address is obtained and everything, I get a "Connection to the server failed, A DNS error has occurred (80410414)" but my DNS is fine... I can access the internet on the same settings no problem.
My access point seems to work fine, I've tried WPA and none for the security settings of my router and neither works--I get the same message. What should I do?

Guys, I Found out how to kill the 80410418 error glitch!

What actually causes this is the Proxy Settings, they seem to be flawed in some way so just do the following:

HIT /\ TO OPEN THE BROWSER, THEN HIT X ON TOOLS, GO TO SETTINGS, GO TO PROXY SERVER SETTINGS, AND IF IT SHOWS ON, FLIP IT'S SETTING TO DO NOT USE AND SAVE, THEN GO TO YOUR HOME PAGE (MAKE SURE IT ISN'T SET AS A PORN SITE XD)! lol I am a 13 year old and I just solved an uncommon problem.
