Network Update on my Sony PSP doesn't work?

How do I get the Network Update feature on my Sony PSP to work? I've tried what Sony suggests but it never seems to like my wireless Wi-Fi connection, so I can't ever get to the network to look for any sort of update!

Dave's Answer:

Since I first got my Sony PSP I've also been trying to get this to work, with zero success. While it appears to support wireless encryption protocol (WEP), the encryption key that works fine for my Mac and PC fails on the PSP with cryptic errors like 80410D09 and 80410D07.

Then in exasperation I went to a public wifi access point at a local cafe and tried to connect using their wireless network, one that didn't have any sort of password. And it worked, first time!

The first problem I had to figure out, however, was when I tried to connect I was promptly informed that WLAN Switch Is Turned Off on the PSP screen. After some digging, I found out that the small silver slide switch on the lower left edge controls whether the PSP can access a wireless network (WLAN) or not: slide it up and you'll be wireless ready.

To configure a network access point, press Home then move to Network Update, then you get to the configuration screen that asks for the WLAN Settings (the default is to enter an SSID), choose "Scan" instead and let the PSP identify all the wireless networks it can see. Choose whichever one has the strongest signal and indicates "None" (not "WEP") for "Encryption".

Choose all the default configuration settings and you should promptly be asked to press the X button to save your new access profile. Do so, then select it again and, if your connection works you'll see "Checking Server...", then, if there's an update available, the PSP shows:

Network Update has found a later version.
To download, insert a Memory Stick with at least 14MB of free space
and press the X button.

Press the X button and you'll see "Downloading..." and a warning not to turn the unit off or remove the Memory Stick while downloading, then the download starts. I timed it on my system: it took a bit more than ten minutes for the download,PSP operating system version 1.52.

When the download succeeds, you'll now see:

Download completed.
The update is now available on your
Memory Stick.
To install now, press the x button.
To install later, go to [Game].

Pressing the X button restarts the PSP unit then automatically starts the PSP Update ver 1.52 and gives you a single option: Start. To start the actual upgrade, I again push the X button.

Then, to my surprise, even though the unit is actually plugged into the wall, I receive:

The update cannot be started.
The battery level is low.
Charge the battery and then try again.

I let the unit charge for an hour, then found the update by going to Game, Memory Stick and pressing the X button. This revealed "PSP Update ver. 1.52" which I started with one more press of the X button.

This time it decided that my battery was sufficiently charged (and, yes, it was still plugged in too) and I got:

The following updates will be added:
• Revisions to strengthen security were added.
• UMB MUSIC can now be played under [Music]

Since I don't have any UMD music, I can only assume that this is so Sony can sell UMD's as an alternative to music CDs. Would anyone buy them? I am doubtful, but that's another story entirely...

I pressed the right arrow button, as instructed, and was shown:

Do not turn off the power, disconnect
the AC adaptor or remove the
Memory Stick during update, as doing
so may cause the system to malfunction.
Once the update is started you cannot
go back to the previous version of the
system software.
Press the X button to start.

Now it switches to "Installing..." and took approximately 90 seconds to install.

Finally, finally, we're ready to restart the PSP: "Update completed. Press the X button to restart."

And so, I press X and the unit restarts and appears to be fully functional and everything's intact with the new, updated, system software. Congrats to Sony for this process - once you figure it out, it's a simple and elegant way to keep the software on your PSP fully up-to-date.

One final tip: to delete the unneeded update, go to Game, Memory Stick and press X to get to the PSP Update, then press the triangle button to pull up three options for this file: Start, Delete and Information. Move down to Delete and press the X button. Done!

after i get the update downloaded do i need ot be connected to a wireless connection to install?

Dave Taylor said, on September 6, 2005 8:06 AM:

Stephen, you should be able to update just fine without a wireless network, once you've downloaded everything and copied it onto your PSP. I did.

Also, Andrew, you shouldn't need an SSID. Just ignore that field.

i just updated my psp to version 2.50 and as soon as the update finished, everything seems to be working fine, but i always get the "wlan switch is turned off" message even though it is switched on... it all started after the update... what should i do?

Dave Taylor said, on October 21, 2005 5:43 AM:

I didn't even know that there was a 2.50 release, Tony, so I can't offer any ideas on what might have gone wrong. Are you *double* sure that the WLAN switch is enabled?

Hey i tried to get a network update but it said no acess points found what should i do? Should i go to a mcdonalds or burger king or something to get a connection?

Dave Taylor said, on November 30, 2005 3:15 AM:

You're exactly right, Tim. You need a wireless network that you can tap into, so McDonalds or Burger King (if they have open wifi) are both good choices.

Sounds like you definitely have a problem. I'd take the PSP into the store where you bought it and double check that it's not the battery, adapter, etc, by swapping out with some other equipment. Good luck!

what does connection error 80410d07 mean?

Dave Taylor said, on December 27, 2005 10:18 AM:

Johnny, sounds like your PSP might be busted. I'd take it back to wherever you bought it and see if they have any good ideas on how to fix it.

Toble, I don't know what that error code means, but I'm guessing that either you don't have an available network, or you don't have the password to a private wifi network. In either case my suggestion is the same: find an open Wifi network and try that instead.

Unless you can find a neighbor or local establishment (library, cafe, pub?) that has a wireless wifi network, no, you're going to be out of luck with just a dialup connection, Nick.

zeph said, on January 22, 2006 1:18 AM:

To Toby: It says that because you don't have a wireless server. If you connect your PSP to a computer with the internet on, it should not say this any more, but if you have a Dial-Up internet provider, you're out of luck. If you want to get a wireless connection, go to your local library. If your library has a second floor, the connection might be stronger. If this doesn't work, get a USB 2.0 cable and connect it to the libraries computer(town libraries usualy have a DSL or High Speed connection, so it must work). If this connection doesn't work, create a new one, and press scan, because your old connection might have different settings. My e-mail adress is gonzalezleonor@sbcglobal.net. P.S. I'm only a thirteen year old, pretty smart huh.

Im having trouble trying to update my network. When I scanwith my PSP i get some SSID's but they have WEP encryptions. I tryed putting in random letters in my WEP key but it keeps talking about a hexadecimal or ASCII. What does that mean and can you give me an example of what those look like.

Dave Taylor said, on February 3, 2006 11:00 PM:

Darius, you can't just randomly guess the password. The WEP is an encrypted password that secures the wireless network you're trying to use. If you don't know the password, you're out of luck, you'll need to find a different one.

Darius said, on February 4, 2006 9:13 PM:

Thanx Dave for the help you gave me, I was able to find a SSID with no encryption code needed and it was 100%. Now I have my PSP upgraded into a 2.60. Is there a higher upgrade I could get?

Dave Taylor said, on February 4, 2006 11:33 PM:

2.60 is the latest upgrade for now, Darius. Glad you got things working!!

Darius said, on February 10, 2006 8:49 PM:

Hey Dave It's me Darius again I have a question. I've been scanning for more SSID's again and I got one that said "not supported", what does that mean and is there something I can do about It?

Tyler said, on February 26, 2006 7:09 AM:

i cant get my network settings to work right
i think it is the thing that says (wep)

Dave Taylor said, on February 26, 2006 8:31 PM:

Please note that you CANNOT use a wireless access point if it has WEP or WPA security and you don't know the password. You're locked out. You'll need to either find out the password or find a different network to use for your PSP.

Dave,

I think I have a different problem. When trying to connect to my wireless network it says:

"A connection error has occurred. A connection to the access point could not be established. Check the security settings for the network and try again."

Now I've tried everything. I went as far as to change the settings in my router to have no security but to no avail. I decided to try a place near my house that offers free wireless. Same error message. The wireless switch is on and when it is off it tells me. What could I possibly try?

I feel a bit stupid asking you this but I've recently downloaded firmware update 2.7 on to my PSP, but I can't get rid of 2.6 despite my best efforts.

I can't find it when I dig through the files on my computer -PSP connected via USB cable- and the menu doesn't come up when I select it on the PSP itself.

When I go to the game subsection, PSP update ver. 2.60 is an option just like my game is. How do I get rid of it? I'm using the 32 mb stick I got with the PSP, so space is rather important.

Dave Taylor said, on May 1, 2006 11:50 PM:

Jerald, go to your neighbor and ask them if you can get their password so you can use their network? :-)

Azathoth, when you're looking at the 2.6 update, what do you see if you press the "up triangle" button? You should see a couple of file management options, including "delete file". That'll do it!

I have a 1.5 PSP but I cannot upgrade to 2.7. I have the EBOOT.PBP in the UPDATE folder under PSP\GAMES\ and it shows up. When i select it, it starts the gameboot sequence, then it starts to load, but when it gets to the start screen on the update, it shows an error message (keep in mind, this is after I have loaded it, not installed the update, but loaded up the screen) "The Update Cannot Be Started. The Data is Corrupt." So i press "O" and it restarts my PSP showing the XMB menu again. I am thinking the portion of the firmware that allows updates may be busted or corrupted. I have even tried updating from a UMD and from other PBP update files (e.g. 2.0) Any help will be appriciated (p.s. i used to be able to upgrade and downgrade as i pleased but something recent must have happened to make it where it wouldnt update)

I bought the game Metal Gear Solid Portable OPS...when I put it in my PSP it said that I needed to upgrade and then asked me if I would like to upgrade now. I said 'yes' figuring the upgrade was on the CD of the game. Once done...I put in the game and can't get past the screen that says "press Start to begin". No matter what choice I make (new game, load game, etc...) it goes right back to the screen that says "press start to begin". Any ideas? My other games work fine (like Splinter Cell).

Steve, Tury and Rey, sounds like your PSPs are broken, unfortunately. There are options other than going to Sony, however:

Hey everybody. I heard that a lot of you are having problems with the PSP internet. You need a Wireless Connection in order to use the PSP internet. Also a lot of you are wondering where to get psp music, well a good place to go is MP3Realm. Just search the song you want and download it. Well I hope I helped.

Starbucks coffee cup I do have a lot to say, and questions of my own for that matter, but first I'd like to say thank you, Dave, for all your helpful information by buying you a cup of coffee!
