the Sony PSP requires a high power USB port, to connect to your PC... this is the same as devices such as the Apple iPod. A high power USB port is typically found as part of your computer's motherboard, on the back of your computer. In some cases, USB ports on the front of your computer are high power, as well.

Additionally, the PSP will not automatically recognize that it is plugged into a USB port. You must put the PSP in USB mode. To do this, go to the main PSP "Home" menu (press the "Home" button if you are currently in a game, and quit that game), scroll all the way to the left, then up to the "USB Connection" icon. press "X" to put your PSP into USB mode. WHen you're done, press "O" to take your PSP out of USB mode.

If you have plugged your PSP into all of the USB ports on your computer, and are still not having any luck, you can purchase a high power USB hub from any electronics store (Fry's, Circuit City, Best Buy, etc.) for around $30.

Hi my windows 98 se pc is seeing the psp as a device but tells me the drivers are not installed, when i let windows search for them it does not find them, also when i browse for them under program files it still does not find them.

I am told that the file i need is a INI file but in the datel file folder none exist ????

Hi Scott. Sorry to hear of your hassles, but as far as I know, there are no correct PSP drivers for Windows 98. If I'm wrong, I'd love to have someone post a link on this discussion pointing to a download site for a clean, safe, virus-free, spyware-free driver!

My Windows XP PC (notebook) does not recognize my new Sony PSP, too. My second table windows PC works fine. The notebook says, that has no drivers. Both are standars windows xp installation. Where can be problem?

For Windows 98, you have to install a standard Flash Disk driver. Do a Google search for Win98Driver.exe.

My Sony PSP can't recognise when a USB cable is connected. I've plugged in the cable and PC but when I select the USB mode option, it comes up with the message CONNECT A USB CABLE, evn though the cable is clearly connected. It worked OK a few days ago and the cable and PC work fine with my friend's PSP. I'm asuming that my USB port is damaged but I wondered if there's sopmething else I've overlooked.

With regards to not having the drivers and the device being detected as malfunctioning in windows, I've found that the problem is strangely enough fixed by plugging it in through a "high powered USB hub" as per above. Windows can then suddenly access the device just fine. But connecting it directly to the motherboard even fails, weird.... (to a Dell Inspiron 1100).

with my PSP, i've found that no matter what USB port it's in, it won't load correctly unless it's plugged into the power.

I had the same problem as some of the above. I am running Windows XP Pro SP2 and in the past my PSP was recognized. I started using a new USB Hub today and it got really screwy. I got the driver not found message and Windows recognized the PSP as an unknon device. I have found that if you connect the cable to the PSP, but not the computer then turn on USB Mode, then connect it to the computer, Windows recognizes the drive. It was weird that this would make a difference, but for me it worked. Hope this helped.

I just bought a psp for myself and I also bought Datel's Max Media Manager in order to transfer mp3's onto my psp. I have connected a usb cable to the computer and psp both and have put the psp into usb mode and windows 98 still won't recognize my psp and I have no idea of what to do. Any suggestions?

What Rapt0r9 explained absolutely works. Plugging the usb cable into the psp with the usb function on before plugging it to the computer port works just fine for me, when doing the opposite did not. Thanks!

You're right, Eric. This was an answer I wrote before I owned a PSP. Now that I have one, I can see that this missed the boat, so I just added a pointer to a better answer to this same basic question. Ah well... :-)

I encountered this same issue today after having used my PSP for several months without issue. Because of the sudden introduction of the problem, I was able to take some simple troubleshooting measures and identified the problem as follows. I cannot guarantee that this is the case for all, but I suspect that it should be included for consideration for most.

The PSP attempts to doc itself on the next available drive letter. Only problem is that the driver appears not to understand that virtual drive mappings are just as solid as physical drive mappings. For example, if you have C:, D: and E: drives dedicated to physical disk drives, then the PSP will attempt to load itself as drive F:, however if F: is already dedicated to a virtual mapping, the PSP will not show up. As soon as I removed the virtual mapping, I was back in business. Hope this helps.

hello, i own a psp and have windows 98 and can connect my psp to my comp with the usb cord. Win 98 does not have a flash memory driver dave(duh!)so you simply download one for maybe a thumb drive or a digital camera ad your rolling. p.s. dave doesent know what he's talking about you can use the psp with any usb port of any speed or power.

Ah, a great example of the problem of blog entries living forever, even as the technology changes and even as new, better entries are added. Jayman, I didn't say that you could only use a specific speed of USB port, but it is true that the PSP is a USB 2.0 compliant device so your PC will likely complain if you plug it into an older USB 1 port. You can, of course, safely ignore that and proceed.

However, the issue of whether the port needs to have "high" power or not is an interesting one. I have plugged my PSP into some ports just to get an error that indicates it wants to be plugged into the ports directly on the PC or Mac, so it's interesting that you seem to have difference experience. Perhaps your keyboard or other USB splitter is powered and you don't realize it?

ok well first thing first.
I did everything i could think of to get this right and only one thing worked

i did all the basics, i suggest you check this first: format memory stick in psp, connect via usb mode, have 2.00+ update.

Now if you did all of that and you get an error of "device malfunctioned" / "device not recognized" / "cannot copy file: bad filename or path" REPLACE THE USB CABLE WITH A NEW ONE.

i bought a cheap usb cable for 5$ thinking it would get the job done and it had a faulty connection i guess.

i connected a good usb cable and windows did its plug n play thing and it worked beautifully.

you should get a message or two saying "PSP type A found" (something like that) / "your new device is ready to be used"

after that there should be a removable drive in my computer that can accept files without errors and such.

if you have anymore problems i dont know what to tell you.

you must have windows xp, and if you already have it there is no need to mess around with your bios or drivers as i've heard floating around here. messing with your bios can leave you with a paper wieght computer and drivers are almost as bad as the registry to work with. cover the basics and it should work fine.

Dave, how come if i save a higher quality vid/music recording, it does NOT play clearly on my psp? It's like there is voice overrun. If i just use the lower quality image/sound, it comes out better?

I had this very same problem. I am on Windows XP and my PSP would never be found in My Computer but it recognized it in device manager. I fixed it by going to the Device Manager, and if you were in the same boat as I was you'll see Generic Volume in the Storage volumes catagory. Right click Generic Volume and choose 'Scan for Hardware Changes' - as soon as I did that, I saw the PSP in My Compyter. Hope this is helpful!

i don't have a windows XP, i have windows millienieum and when i plug in my USB cable to the port and when i go tho windows media player to transfer my music, all it says is that there are no devices plugged in. it seems as though my PSP recongnizes it but my computer doesn't. how can i get my computer to recognize my PSP?

Ok everyone. If you plug your psp in and select usb mode on ur psp and your computer doesn't do anything this should help a bit. If you have played around with your drivers with daemon tools or something and your computer can't recognise your psp, try these steps to uninstall the driver and reinstall it (WARNING: I AM USING A TOSHIBA LAPTOP NOTEBOOK WHICH IS WITH MY SCHOOL NETWORK):

1. Click start, then control pannel.
2. Select "System" and then click hardware, and in the hardware catergory select Device Manager.
3. A new window will open. Double-click Disk Drives, fourth from the top.
4. Make sure you have your psp in and connected and everything. Then double click on the Sony PSP USB device.
5. Select "Driver" from the tabs at the top and the botom link thing should say, UNINSTALL. Ignore the warning message and click ok.
6. Take ur PSP out and disconnect it etc. Then Put the PSP back into your computer and it should say found new hardware etc. now it should work.

REMEMBER I AM USING A LAPTOP!!

Joss was right but didn't reply to anyone on how to change the virtual drive. You can change the PSP drive let in Disk Management for XP/XP Professional users.

Hi, my computer has recongnised my PSP system and i have copied music (media player format) to the MUSIC folder. Problem is, it says 'WMA playback is not enabled'. What does this mean, when i open the system setting and enable WMA playback section on the PSP it trys to connect to the internet but never works....

Just aquirred a PSP and usb cable. Tried attaching it to my PC but as soon as I go to USB settings on PSP, the PC freezes. I have to switch off the PC and reboot. It hasn't got anything to do with both USB ports already being assigned to other hardware?

hi i am stupid and i deleted some .txt documents from my psp in the kd folder ..... my psp turns on now but shows nothing is there any way to get back into it and put the .txt files that i have backed up on my computer back to there spot?

this is nightmare for me ok here we go i have windows xp, i connect my psp and it says found new hardware and i wait a couple of seconds and it then says hardware has been installed and is ready to be used, so i look in my computer and there is no removable disk drive. Actually a lot of times, it seems to be just the usb cable. I tried using my nice looking usb cable and can see the removable drive on my computer but cannot view any files. Then I switched to the cheezy looking usb cable that came with my generic usb card reader and it works great. I can see the files now.

Try using a different usb cable.

in my dell labtop the USB connection is not reading,which have office xp .

if your computer wont read your psp just go to your device manager.Turn on your psp and go into usb mode. connect your usb cable. look for USB MASS STORAGE DEVICE or whatever your psp shows up as. right-click your USB MASS STORAGE DEVICE and choose properties. uninstall your drivers and disconnect your psp. reconnect your psp and go back into usb mode. this will reinstall your psp drivers. Go into my computer and your psp should be there! it should work for most of you.

I just bought a PSP recently because of a new tennis game coming out soon. There is a demo available, and I'd love to be able to try it...except I can't get my PSP and usb cable to work together. When I plug them all in, the computer said found new hardware, then said it was installed and I opened My computer to see a removable disk(E:) pop up....so I click it and then it said please insert disk. Did I do something wrong?? It wont let me open the folder even though im all connected...help!!

I have three psp's and i was having trouble getting AR for psp to recognize one of them.
I've tried everything.
I've been able to narrow it done to xp is loading the wrong driver. It should be loading the Sony PSP Usb device driver but its not, its loading a USB device driver. I can still see the psp in windows explorer, its just AR doesn't see the device as a psp. I've done it all too to no avail.
Different mem cards, cords, reinstalling drivers but she always loads the same Usb driver. I've even reflashed twice from 3.40 to 1.5 and back.
Can someone help me out?

Ok, i was having the"Device not recognized" problem aswell but after reading steve's reply about using a different cord i went ahead and tried that first. (i was using a basic cord i got with it from Joytech so i just found some cheap generic walmart one i already had), plugged it in and a few seconds later it was working.

My PC detects my PSP but when you browse the removable disk drive a different menu with different folders appears. There is no ISO folder, the usual menu when your pc detects your PSP does not appear but instead folders with different file names appears. I deleted this menus and when I restarted my PSP it does not open blank screen no voice! Did I broke my PSP?What Should I do? Thank you very much....

I've tried many of the suggestions I've seen on here to try and fix my PSP's USB connection problem, but nothing seems to work at all... It's probably my computer, though. It doesn't recognize a lot of different devices I have. :(

i format my psp and every folder in my psp is gone.

now when i use the usb connection and other setting systems but it woundn't work.

It would appear that my problems were fixed after a little experimenting, because i can use my PSP USB cable but only after following very specific instructions. FIRST put the PSP in usb cable mode, do not have the usb cable itself inside the psp or PC at the time. SECOND plug the end of the USB cable that gos into your PSP first, THEN the USB cable into the PC. OTHERS My psp USB cable is over sensitive, and the tiniest movement can reset the entire process. put all things on a hard flat surface and do not budge the psp once plugged into the pc. NOTE i am using a MAC OS X, but i used my windows laptop running XP on it in the same manner and it still worked. once i hard to hard reset (remove all power cords, batteries etc.) from the PC/laptop and try again after moving my psp once to many times connecting it. this hasnt happened again yet. ALSO MAKE SURE you do not have the psp charging off of the USB cable, or have it plugged into the charger. IT SHOULD IN NO WAY BE CHARGING PERIOD.

My USB cable comes wif a charger, and when i plugged the cable to the computer while the PSP is in USB mode, the screen on the PSP shows "Plese Wait" but nothing is detected on the computer. The charging light is orange though... so wat should i do?

i just recently downloaded the Media Manager for the psp from the Playstation website. (By the way, i did it for free) so the dwnload worked but in order to turn the on software, I have to plug my psp. But my vista dosen't recognize it.

when I plug my psp(2000) into the pc, it tells me the device is trying to charge and using to much energy, so I should un plug and reset it. Someone told me to put it back on original system settings but that didn't help at all. Please help me.

Im trying to put some files on my PSP (PSP-2000) but my laptop (using Vista) doesnt read my PSP. And if it does, then it doesnt allow me to put files on the psp. It starts to copy the files and then all of a sudden stops. Any help would be much appriciated...thx.

Hi? My "USB/charger" to my PSP GO isn't working I spilled a little jucie on to the charger part and now it wont do anything. I tryed cleaning it the best way I could. Do you think I can get it fix or do you think i have to buy another?

I hade the problem USB Device not recognized on Windows 7 Ultimate x64 and after a long search that leaded to a ZERO RESULT I deciced to try something else so what I did was while my psp is on flip it over detach the batery cover and remove the battery for 30 seconds insert the battery and flap and start up my ps and whala my windows found the device and installed it and now I can access my psp.

Just unplug your usb cable and plug it firmly back is as this can allso result in your device not been reqonised by your OS.

Allso check something else if your psp is not been recognized check if your psp detect any access points as mine detected it but couldnt assign any IP Addrsses.

ok so i figured it out for all of you windows vista/7 users!
1. open start menue and in search type view devices/printers
2. after opening devices and printers look for psp type a or b or c or whatever model u have.
3. click it then properties then hardware then update drivers! it worked for me hope this helps

Guys Rapt0r9 is right plug the usb cable in the psp first and go to usb connection then plug it in the computer I try it the first time didn't work but I shutdown my computer and turn off my psp then it worked.

I cut the file in my PSP using my PC. But when I turn on my psp it appears a black screen and then the power was automatically turned off after 10 or more seconds.I try to open my psp in my PC so that I can paste back the file(i think the program file of psp) but I cant open anymore my psp to my PC. USB Cable error occurs in case if you are using a fake USB cable.In some PC fake one works but if not then you have to buy a original one

As everyone else here, I have searched for two days trying to figure out how to get my pc to recognize my PSP. And I finally got it. I was using a cheap USB cord & then remembered I had a USB cord that I use to connect my digital camera to the computer. When I used that USB cord my PC automatically recognized the PSP. YAY!!! So simple, yet took me so long to figure out.

It called Removable Disk (F:) when I click it.. it only shows only shortcut folder with no data in it and I don't even have my game in it...when I click the shortcut..it says something like delete this shortcut... can someone help me?

i used to help my friend's psp also have same problem. What i do is, to update the firmware first. U have to go to home > network update, then lets the PSP search and download the update. after the download process is successful, u have to install it. follow the instruction given. after it has been installed, reboot the psp and u are done. u can know see what inside ur memory card

HI, the 'plug the cord into psp, turn on usb connection and then connect to pc' worked for me as well on xp sp2.

Actually, all you need to do is go to system settings on the PSP and make sure Auto USB connect is turned on and make sure the PSP is turned on when you connect it to your pc.

i formatted my psp memory stick, and it still doesnt connect to my computer to where the box pops up... i am so angry because the format wiped out all my saved data on games (which i dont like so i dont care), my demos (which i do care about) and my pictures and stuff like that.

Aaarghh... My PSP Go:s USB-cabel isn't working. Can I use other side of that to my computer?? There's a link under this. VUSE not recognizing the PSP ?
here the solution:
Step 1 : Plug in your PSP, when it pops up with the auto run press "View files and folders" or some thing to that effect to bring up the files in your Explorer
Step 2 : Create a new folder named "Video"
Step 3 : Restart Vuze. Your PSP should now be viewable in Vuze under devices as long as Devices is "ON"

*Dont forget to install the vuse transcoder plugin

I got my psp 3000 for my birthday last year and to this day i have not gotten it to work. iv'e been everywhere online, tried everything and nothings working. I plugged USB cord into psp and in to my laptop and turned on USB connection and tried formatting memory stick and it still wont work. I downloaded MAX MEDIA MANAGER and yet, it doesn't work.
