Motorola RAZR V3c and Mac OS X: Transfer pictures and wallpaper?

Dave, I'm very excited. I just bought a brand new Motorola RAZR V3c cellphone and it's as cool and sexy as can be, but I'm now wondering what I can do with the bluetooth capability. How do I use this thing to copy pictures up and down from my Mac to the RAZR?

Dave's Answer:

As it happens, I've been experimenting (read "playing") with a new Motorola RAZR V3c cellphone too, from Verizon. I'm both trying to get it to sync up with my Toyota Prius (which has been pretty darn easy) and with my bluetooth-capable Mac Powerbook (not so easy!)

To get the RAZR and Mac talking to each other, I had to do a bit of hacking too, which you might not be comfortable with. Not tweaking the phone, but the Mac itself. Here are the steps I took. Take a deep breath, it's kinda complex...

First off, you need to grab the two data files accessible at the file archive site megaupload.com. It forces you to look at some ads for 30 seconds or so, then you'll see a "click to download" option: do so, and then leave it alone for now.

Next, in the Finder identify the iSync application, then right click on the iSync icon and choose "Show Package Contents". You'll see a folder labeled "Contents" and it's deep within that folder's subfolder directory that the two new files need to be copied. Here's where I ended up (I used the command-click option on the directory status in the window title to show the full path here):

iSync Folder contents

For the record, the full path you need to navigate through to is: Contents : PlugIns : ApplePhoneConduit.syncdevice : Contents : PlugIns : PhoneModelsSync.phoneplugin : Contents : Resources. Got it? :-)

Rename the file MetaClasses.plist to "MetaClasses.plist.old" (as you can see I've already done in the screenshot shown) then copy the two files you downloaded into this directory. One is a new version of MetaClasses.plist and the other is the file MOTV3-cdma.tiff.

Now you can close that window up. Your Mac knows what a Motorola RAZR V3c is at this point, at least it knows some of the capabilities...

Open up the Bluetooth System Preference (Apple Menu -> System Preferences -> Bluetooth) and turn Bluetooth on if you need to, then click on the "Devices" option. You'll see the following:

Bluetooth: No Devices Configured

No big surprise, it's time to click on "Set Up New Device..." which launches the Bluetooth Setup Assistant. It's pretty straightforward: choose "mobile phone" when you get to pick what type of device you're working with, then while it's searching for mobile phones, flip open your fancy new Motorola RAZR V3c and go to: Menu -> Settings -> Connections -> Bluetooth.

Choose Setup then choose Find Me, which will make your RAZR visible to the Bluetooth world for 60 seconds. A few seconds later your Mac will cheerily show "Motorola Phone" in the Setup Assistant and you can Continue to the next step in the process.

The Mac will pop up a Mobile Phone Setup Pairing code, a security key to ensure that you have control of both the Mac and the RAZR. It'll look like this:

Apple Bluetooth Setup Code: Motorola RAZR V3c

Before the sixty seconds are up, select Yes when the RAZR asks you "Bond with TiBook?" (TiBook is the name of my laptop, yours will vary). Enter the code and click OK on the phone and you should get a "Congratulations! Your mobile phone is now set up to use your computer's Bluetooth features."

The phone and computer can now communicate. Before you leave the Setup area on the RAZR, however, make sure you've turned the Power to "On" so you don't have to fiddle with it any time you want to use it with your Mac in the future.

Now your Bluetooth configuration on the Mac looks splendid:

Apple Bluetooth Setup: Motorola RAZR V3c

Go back to the "Settings" area and choose to have the bluetooth icon appear on the menubar and you should be done with the Bluetooth System configuration window.

Just make sure that the "Sharing" settings look like this:

Apple Bluetooth Sharing: Motorola RAZR V3c

Now, to browse the RAZR file system, grabbing photos, videos and even uploading new images, wallpapers and ringtones, simply choose "Browse Device..." from the Bluetooth menu:

Apple Bluetooth Menu in Mac OS X

Then select "Motorola Phone" from the list and click Browse. It's amazing! You're browsing the cellphone file system via bluetooth from your Mac:

Apple Bluetooth: Browsing the Motorola RAZR V3c

Photographs are found in "picture", ringtones in "ringtone" and so on. You can download content from the phone to your Mac by clicking on the appropriate folder, then choosing "Get" or "Send", depending on what you seek.

Curious about what a picture taken with the phone looks like? Here's a pic I just took of a calendar photo (B&W, not color, don't panic) that I grabbed off the phone and uploaded to my server:

Motorola RAZR V3c sample photograph
click to see a full-size image

It's not the same quality as my $2500 Nikon digital camera, but for a phone, heck, it's not bad either!

That's as far as I've gotten with my own RAZR V3c, but I'm really hoping to get someone to add information about how to use the RAZR as a bluetooth modem since it is clearly quite capable of that functionality!

One last note: if you want to add wallpapers, make sure they're in JPEG format and you can shrink them down to a tiny 176x220 and they'll appear beautiful on the phone itself.

I hope this incredibly detailed article is helpful. Good luck and, um, please remember that I take no responsibility for your trying the mods shown herein.

I was wondering whether I wanted to buy one of these phone because the specs say "It does not support Bluetooth object transfer (OBEX) profiles." Anyways, you cleared it up for me, I still don't know what that means but at least I know I can sync it now if I decide to buy it.

Thanks!

Posted by: Nathaniel Gabriel Nutter at January 16, 2006 10:27 PM

I have a question, what can you sync with it in iSync, i.e. calendars, to-do items, address book, etc.?

Posted by: Nathaniel Gabriel Nutter at January 16, 2006 10:29 PM

Nathan, I have read that people can sync both their calendar (with iCal) and their phone book (with Address Book). I have only tried the latter - with success - but don't need my calendar on my phone. Worth noting: I had to cycle power on the RAZR for it to work properly...

What a great article! It was detailed, accurate and cleared up all my problems. Thanks for all your hard work!

Dave,

I want to transfer my contacts on the Verizon Razr V3c to my '04 Prius. HELP? Thanks. I have the phone paired, but don't know where on the phone to send the contacts (phonebook.)

Jack

Posted by: Jack at January 20, 2006 9:34 AM

I do too, Jack. Unfortunately, Verizon has disabled this feature of the Motorola RAZR V3c telephone, as far as I can ascertain. There's no way I can figure out to transfer the phone book, short of sync'ing it with another bluetooth device and using that as an intermediary (which I have yet to try).

Posted by: Dave Taylor at January 20, 2006 9:41 AM

Thanks for your article - but I wanted to share with your readers that as of 10.4.4 it is no longer necessary to download or tweak iSync - OS X now knows all about the Razor phone.

So - just pickup on Dave's wonderful tutorial at the Open BlueTooth preferences pane and ask it to setup a new device!

Very tasty.

Posted by: David Aitken at January 21, 2006 10:09 AM

David, I'm running 10.4.4 and I still had to do all the tweaks I outlined, so while it theoretically includes support for the RAZR, it doesn't actually support the RAZR V3c, and so it didn't work for me, at least.

Posted by: Dave Taylor at January 21, 2006 10:54 AM

I'm confused, your article talks about setting up the V3c for OBEX, but at the bottom here, you say it doesn't support it. You say you can transfer the phone book, but then you say Verizon disbled this feature (OBEX). Can you clarify?

What about windows machines?

Posted by: Bob Benward at January 23, 2006 11:45 AM

Bob, a logical point of confusion. Motorola has lots of support for cool stuff, but Verizon appears to prefer limiting featuresets to generate revenue, so while the phone supports OBEX, for example, theoretically Verizon is going to shut it down. Meanwhile, the current release of the RAZR V3c *does* have OBEX enabled, hence my ability to sync address books and up/download pictures, etc.

Posted by: Dave Taylor at January 23, 2006 5:56 PM

Hi Dave,

I'm also a little bit puzzled at your comment about how Verizon's current V3C phones have the OBEX profile enabled. I'm a Verizon user and I'm planning to upgrade to the Razr, but I'm not eligible until April 16. I'm going to assume that at that point Verizon will have disabled the OBEX profile - how can I re-enable that when the time comes? I'm sure it's possible, but I don't know how.

Any ideas?

Posted by: Dave Finstein at January 24, 2006 5:07 PM

Dave: I can't get my V3c voice memo tool to work. I upgraded from a Motorola V710 which had an easy two-step process for recording and listening to voice memos. The V3c allows me to record (over multiple steps), but then I can't find where/how to listen to my memos! I know this is a 'low on the radar' issue, but any insight would be appreciated.

Posted by: steve Sefcik at January 24, 2006 5:34 PM

Steve, I pulled this into its own entry and figured out how to get pretty nice screenshots of the cellphone screen itself (finally!) so I could answer your question:

http://www.askdavetaylor.com/motorola_razr_v3c_how_do_i_use_voice_memos.html

Hope it's helpful!

Posted by: Dave Taylor at January 24, 2006 11:27 PM

Dave: (re: voice memo function on V3c) ... THANK YOU! I would never have been able to figure that out on my own... gotta go... time to record/play some memos!

Posted by: Steve Sefcik at January 26, 2006 6:20 AM

What version of iSinc are you using, on mine after i go to "Show Package Contents" there is no "Plugins" folder, Just {"Info.plist", "MacOS", "PkgInfo", "Resources" amd "version.plist"}

Posted by: KC at January 28, 2006 8:21 AM

Hey Dave,

Just read this site and thought it might help me. I have a motorola e770v (vodafone Spain) that I just bought solely b/c of the bluetooth capacity. Bummed to realize it doesn't work w/ my ibook (OSX 10.4.4). The computer and the phone recognize each other but when I go to transfer a file I am given the "device cannot be validated" error.

Before I go trying the steps you suggest for the razr v3, I was wondering if you could give me your opinion of whether or not you think it would resolve my phone's problem. Seeing that I have a motorola it might work, but then again, it's not a razr, so i'm not sure.

I've already contacted motorola about the problem and was told the software isn't compatible with Macs. grr....

Anyway, advice would be appreciated!!!

Has anyone tried to connect the V3c to a palm one T series? I have a T3, and would like to know if I will be able to have all 3, powerbook - T3 - V3c communicate. Specifically the address book, and calendar. If only they could get all 3 of these to be the size of a RAZR in one package...

Posted by: Shane at January 29, 2006 11:42 AM

Dave, what about connecting my Cingular Razr3 to my Inspiron M600 Dell Laptop, equipped with Windows XP Pro, using Bluetooth on my Razr. Possible. How?
Thanks,
John

Posted by: John Q. Stilwell at January 29, 2006 1:47 PM

I don't have your specific gear to test, but I imagine that should work, John. Try using Google to search for comments from other users with a search like

cingular razr inspiron bluetooth

and see what you find!

Posted by: Dave Taylor at January 30, 2006 9:40 AM

Laura, I think you might need to check with the fine folk at Howard Forums , which is the best place to find out the real details about cellphones and systems I've found online. The answer from Motorola is particularly puzzling, though, because bluetooth shouldn't need to be "compatible" with another computer as it's a standard low-range wireless protocol.

The problem is that the Mac set of configurations might not include your phone, but, again, that seems like it'd affect your ability to do things like sync with iSync, not get the two devices paired in the first place.

I'm afraid I don't have a great answer for you. Experiment, though, and see what you can find.

Hi. Great article. Going to try this tonight. Just a question - I don't have bluetooth on my mac. One of the last without. If do most of your steps up to:

"Now you can close that window up. Your Mac knows what a Motorola RAZR V3c is at this point, at least it knows some of the capabilities..."

can I do the rest (syncing stuff) with the USB connection? I have a new Bell Mobility V3C in Canada. It didn't recognize my phone last night, and I'm thinking that i need those files from that megaupload site. Your thoughts (and thank you)?

Posted by: Rick Rose at February 8, 2006 9:35 AM

Unfortunately, I haven't had any luck with the USB cable at all, either for charging (apparently the V3c needs more voltage than is usually on a USB wire to charge) or accessing any of the files. If someone else has had luck, do share!

Posted by: Dave Taylor at February 8, 2006 10:38 AM

Hi Dave,

I tried deleting the device from iSync and tried to add it again but it won't let me now. I get the "iSync cannot connect to this device" message. What have I done? Anyone?

Posted by: Stefan at February 8, 2006 9:22 PM

Thanks for the insight on bluetooth. I bought this phone to connect to my mac as a high speed modem. has anyone had any experience connecting this way? Explain what is needed please. Does it work as well as the cards?

Posted by: Don Grutzmacher at February 9, 2006 8:31 PM

I just bought 2 RAZR phones from Verizon. One works (grey) with these instructions, and one doesn't (pink). Comparing the two, they have different software versions. [Go to Setting & Tools > System > Device Info > Other Information > S/W Version (hit View)]

GATW_01.0F.02 -- this one works
GATW_01.0F.03 -- doesn't work

I've seen other indications around the web that Verizon forgot to plug OBEX in some versions. Do your instructions actually enable OBEX? Has anyone with the .03 version been successful at 'Browse Device...' (I can get address book to sync, and sometimes calendar, but no browsing).

Posted by: Tim at February 10, 2006 11:27 PM

I have the Motorola RAZR v3c. I belong to Bell Canada in Ontario. The soultion in article #5836 works as you said but Bell has specific software that blocks OBEX file transfer.

It is the same as selling me a car that has a radio and telling me I can use it. They have a *disclamer on their site that says:

"The RAZAR V#c supports the wireless headset and hands free Bluetooth profiles. It doen not support Bluetooth ooject transfer (OBEX) profiles. " Thats because they have disabeled the manafacture's feature.

Bell Canada simply don't get the customer need and seemingly don't care. I am returning the RAZR and finding a suplier with features that i can use. PA

Posted by: Peter Allies at February 11, 2006 10:06 AM

So... any way to do this via USB? I did the first part and my Mac can see the phone however whenever I try to sync I get a message that the device disconnected.

Also... any way (or any application) for transferring such files via USB? Even if I GOT a BT card I'd still have the same problem as PA as I'm also with Bell Cda. (I suspect that they've even blocked the ability to download ringtones from sites other than their own, the b******s piss me off)

Posted by: Chris at February 13, 2006 8:04 PM

Great article, and thanks for this.
I was disappointed like so many others to learn that this new capable phone (Ravor V3c) has the full OBEX disabled, to force you to d/l ringtones etc., from the provider. I have thousands of ringtones, and can send them to the phone, and play them, but they can not be made ringtones in the phone. This sucks, and it should be widely publicized that companies like TELUS (in my case), Bell, Verizon, etc., disable technology to force you to buy something you already have. So typical.

The first provider that eliminates this greedy tactic gets my business.

Posted by: Doug at February 14, 2006 6:35 AM

Hey Bell Canada Users.

I was able to do OBEX file transfers via Bluetooth. Tigerdirect in Toronto has the dongle selling for $40 with a $10 rebate if you get it by Feb 28th. You can transfer ringtones and pictures to and from the phone.

For transferring Contacts, I used On-Sync instead of iSync, I tried what dave said but I couldn't get iSync to work. For the $14 shareware it was fine. Good luck!

Posted by: Rick at February 14, 2006 9:20 PM

Tim, I also have the pink .03 version and had no luck with Browse. Please post if you have found a solution

Posted by: Chris A at February 15, 2006 11:21 PM

Dave,
How did you get the phone to snyc with the Prius, I can't make it work. I just want to load contacts from phone to car, I had the v710 and could not make that work either

Posted by: Morgan at February 15, 2006 11:29 PM

Alas, Morgan, I didn't get it to work, and reading up on the subject quite a bit, it appears that Motorola / Verizon disabled the "send your contact list" capability in the RAZR V3c. Incredibly - INCREDIBLY - stupid and anti-consumer, but if I want to have Verizon as my carrier, I don't know how to sidestep it.

I've wondered if anyone has had any success with syncing their RAZR with a bluetooth laptop, then trying to trick the Prius into receiving a phone book transmission from the laptop itself?

Posted by: Dave Taylor at February 15, 2006 11:35 PM

I cannot find the path to this step.

"Next, in the Finder identify the iSync application, then right click on the iSync icon and choose "Show Package Contents". "

Can you help? I tried "spotlighting" "MetaClasses.plist" and only saw the downloaded title.

Posted by: Craig at February 16, 2006 9:33 AM

I answered my first question. Sorry for the post. I've followed your instructions but I am getting the message: "Device does not have the necessary services" once I click "browse files." I'll be happy to buy the Chai if we can figure this one out.

Hi Dave, wonderful article. Love it. Got my address book to sync up with my V3C (verizon). However, I can't browse the device to edit images, songs, yadda yadda. Is this the OBEX problem? Any patches to solve this thing?

Thanks so much.

Posted by: Karl at February 16, 2006 2:00 PM

The latest version of the RAZR software from Verizon (known as the ".3" release) frustratingly appears to have disabled the OBEX feature completely, so you might be out of luck. Very upsetting when we pay a premium for this phone!

Posted by: will at February 17, 2006 8:11 PM

After Rick's comment that he was able to do transfers I got a BT dongle and it works fine, though iSync still won't sync (gets a disconnect message). But file transfers (eg. ringtones, audio, pictures, video) from OS X's built-in BT transfer utility work fine, and OnSync works like a charm (I'll gladly pay the 14.50 CAD for the software)

Posted by: Chris at February 18, 2006 3:45 PM

I was able to get my new RAZR (Verizon) to work just find with 10.4.4 & 10.4.5 other than the Browsing the file system.

Syncing contacts was a breeze, the bluetooth wizard setup a dialup connection, and iSync picked the phone up without a problem.

My problem lies with the browsing of the file system on the phone.

When I select "Browse Device..." nothing (and I mean nothing) happens at all. Device is paired and all check boxes in the bluetooth preferences are selected. I've taken this as a sign to stop trying so I have; however, if anyone has any suggestions I'd appreciate it.

Thank you.

Dave,
I ordered the Verizon version of the Razr and then did some additional reading about how they disabled a lot of the file transfer options that Motorola had included with this phone. I began to wonder if I had made a mistake. When I got the phone, I liked it alot and then I found your website about how to set this phone up with its proper bluetooth capabilities. I can now do everything I was hoping to do including using actual mp3's for ringtones. Your instructions were thorough and easy to follow. Thank you so much for taking the time do this and then sharing it with the rest of us.

Does anyone know how to upload a phonebook from Outlook onto the Razr that is being used with Bell? What are the steps to do it?

And is there a way that we can hack into the phone and disable this OBEX crap? It's pissing me off, I'm getting so frustrated with it. I don't want this phone anymore.

Please if you know info, reply back. Thanks

Dave, thanks to your instructions, I was able to sync my contacts and calendars to my new (gray) V3c. However, as others have reported, those phones with software version GATW_01.0F.03 are unable to browse. This is irritating, as I would love to get rid of the lame photos that are provided as wallpaper and replace them with my own pictures. If there is a future hack that enables one to customize the phone with pictures and ringtones, please post it on your site. Thanks again for providing these instructions as a public service.

I almost got it to work, but when I went to "browse" was told the "feature is not enabled"

I have been a loyal Verizon customer for more than 5 years, and now feel completely betrayed. I refuse to use the stupid V cast, or to pay for uploading photos that I should be able to do with Bluetooth. This is ridiculous! Loyal Verizon customer NO MORE!!!

The Brian Toth plug in now has an installer and works really well for simple things, like syncing via iSync. Once you install it, and pair the V3c with your computer, it helps to power cycle the phone.

I have found links in HowardForums to earlier software versions, including the Verizon .02 version. On the PC, apparently, one is able to flash the V3c back down to the .02 version with OBEX enabled.

Have you seen any OS X ways to flash the phone?

Posted by: pr0nmeister at March 3, 2006 12:18 AM

Anyone who got this to work with a Verizon V3c Razr may want to avoid updating the firmware in the phone. I also am unable to browse my phone - I get the 'device does not have the necessary services' message.

I'm also unable to send phonebook entries to my Lexus. I asked for help from Verizon - see the response below. Apparently they have turned off all bluetooth capability except for a narrow subset needed for handsfree devices.

I urge everyone who is PO'd about this to contact Verizon support for help. When you get an answer like the one below, express your displeasure to them. Sounds like they're pondering doing something better, so let's throw some wood on the fire.

From Verizon Wireless Support:
"The Motorola Razr is currently not capable of transferring files using Bluetooth technology. Bluetooth capability is a specialized function of this handset, not a feature of our wireless phone service. Verizon Wireless offers limited support of this technology for select devices such as wireless headsets, hands free car kits and dial up networking. We are reviewing the possibility of providing a software update for the Razr that will re-enable the file transfer capability. It is the intent of Verizon Wireless to provide the best equipment and services possible while maintaining reasonable security measures to protect our customers and the security of our wireless network. AAAHHH! I was so excited to do this, but when I click 'Browse,' on the Bluetooth File Exchange menu, it results by saying: 'Device does not have necessary services.'

PLEASE HELP ME!!!!!!

Posted by: Amir at March 12, 2006 1:45 PM

Joseph, you and Amir have the same problem: the very latest version of the Verizon OS for the RAZR (version ".03") has most of the services disabled, which is darn frustrating. You might be able to find information on how to flash an earlier version of the OS onto your phone - if you're willing to try that - over at the terrific howard forums. Go to http://www.howardforums.com/

But don't also forget to let Verizon know how upset you are with their lame policies regarding the RAZR and bluetooth. If enough of us complain perhaps they'll change their approach...

Posted by: Dave Taylor at March 12, 2006 10:29 PM

Thanks Dave! This works great for me! I still can't seem to get it to work with iSync, but that's really the least important of what I wanted it to do.

Does anyone know how to load custom software on? Is this one of the phones that can just run Java programs?

Posted by: Alex at March 12, 2006 11:57 PM

Oh yeah, and I just bought my Razr today. I checked my software version, and it's the .2 one, so they still haven't updated all the phones. Good news for anyone who was (like me) worried about whether they'd have changed it by now.

Tried to download the files from megaupload.com and there are no download buttons. I tried with both Safari and Firefox on Mac. I wait for the timer to go to zero, but no download buttons appear.
Am I missing something? Are they available elsewhere?

Of course, I struggled with it for an hour, posted my question, and immediately figured it out after the post! Now to try the mod...I will let you know how mine goes. Thanks!

Posted by: Jim at March 14, 2006 6:19 PM

Jim, if you have version ".3" of the Verizon OS you're out of luck. Otherwise, try connecting via bluetooth and browsing the file system of the phone...

I got a Verizon Razr that came with the newer .03 software and disabled OBEX. I just flashed the .02 software onto the phone, and it now will do OBEX! I just followed the info from this thread:

Thanks.

I've been using OnSynch which I found on Version Tracker. It works great with the Razr V3c software v.3 for synching your Address Book contacts. Well worth the $12 (it should be noted Motorola wants $59 for their synch software which only works on the PC). The OnSynch software also works with my V60 BlueTooth adapter which it shouldn't as Motorola says it will not support data synch. Hopefully the developer will continue to update for other features or the included source code will be expanded by someone else for pictures, mp3s, etc.

Posted by: RD at March 18, 2006 3:05 PM

Hey Dave, I've seen all this in bits and pieces on the Howard Forums but its nice to see it all in one concise presentation. Good work. (ps are you k.double?)

I've been trying to get this all working on my dad's razr for him but alas he has .3 unfortunately. I did get his razr to show up in iSync however, though I havn't tested it yet. I myself have an LG VX8100 and have experienced the same problems with iSync incompatibility. I'm wondering if you or anyone else here has heard of (or thinks there could likely be) a similar iSync hack for the VX8100? Looking at the MetaClasses.plist file, it seems like just a matter of adding an entry in the metadata. Might even be simple enough to do myself perhaps?

THANKS DAVE for your work,
but I did everything you said, I was able to get pictures to my phone, but not mp3s...I have version .02, the music downloads(uploads) and it's under it's under tunes and tones but when I hit play the active button flashes "Stop" then goes to Play. So it doesn't play. Any advice would be more then helpful, I've been trying to get ringers on my phone since I got it at the end of December.

Posted by: john at March 20, 2006 10:39 AM

I followed your instructions up until you asked for me to go to the Apple Menu, then System Preferences, then Bluetooth. For some reason, I don't have an Icon for Bluetooth there. However, in my Applications, then Utilities, I have Bluetooth File Exchange, Bluetooth Serial Utility, and Bluetooth Setup Assisant. The problem is it tells me it can't open unless I have a Bluetooth device connected, and when I plug in my phone and turn on the Bluetooth on it, it still doesn't detect it. Any suggestions?

Thanks

PREVIOUSLY POSTED:: I'm unable to download Dave's software from megaupload. The listing appears (after 45 secs) but there is no "Download" button!
-----------------------------

Yea, this can be a little deceiveing. You'll notice the timer in the upper right hand corner. Once the timer a "MegaUpload Links" advertisement covers the download link. Just click the "X" to close this and you'll see the Download option. Definitely tricky.

Another thing. Several of you are having problems with Dave's instructions. Make you that you cycle the phone's power Off and then back On again after completing the instructions. Mine did NOT work until I had done so.

Good Luck to you.

So I also have a verizon razr s/w version ending in .03. I followed what you wrote above dave and was able to get my calendar and address book to sync using iSync. Browsing, however, was impossible.

So I called verizon and complained. I found out that cingular has no restrictions on their razr bluetooth and the only reason why verizon restricts it now is because they dont have a support staff in place for bluetooth OBEX.

So I continued to complain and probe for more answers and the nice manager of bluetooth at verizon informed me that this summer verizon is going to offer software updates that will allow OBEX transfers via USB. She said my complaint was a common one and they are moving to fix it.

I did get her to admit that OBEX was disable to funnel customers towards VCast. She also admitted that customers should have a choice.

So call and complain people, they will listen. They are offering me the software and cables for free come summer update.

I also squeezed a possible verizon customer server where customers can upload things to it from their pc and access it from their phone, or vice versa.

Still bummed, but it looks like its in the works...

hi Dave,

I really liked your article on pairing the RAZR V3C with your Powerbook (Titled: Motorola RAZR V3c and Mac OS X: Transfer pictures and wallpaper). I now have my RAZR and SLVR paired up but would like to transfer the Mac's Addressbook to the Prius (oh yeah, I also drive a Prius). I found that with a lot of fiddling I could transfer one phone enry at a time to the Prius, but that is just so 20th century. How do we transfer the entire addresbook (actually just the group that I created for the car) all at once to the Prius?

Thanks,
Bob

Dave

I just got a Moto E815. Would I use the same hack for my phone?

Thanks,

Posted by: Wahn Park at March 23, 2006 1:43 AM

Alfred,

I send myself an e-mail (seems to only work from webmail) with an MP3 attached. I edit the mp3 to be about 30 seconds long, and encode it at a low bitrate in mono. I also have to rename the file to be a .MID, not a .MP3 file. Naming it to be a midi file does not break playback. If you don't rename it, the file does not seem to play at full scale volume. I recommend Audacity to edit the files, but I actually use Logic (I am an audio engineer).

I don't think I left anything out, but if that doesn't work, I'll check for replys here.

Posted by: Kevin at March 23, 2006 10:47 AM

Wahn, I checked out the specs on that phone - darn cool looking device - and I think it should work similarly. Be aware, however, that some cellphone carriers, most notably Verizon, tweak the basic phone OS to change or even disable basic functionality.

I have a Verizon Moto V3c running .02 of the Verizon software. I have modified iSync to permit Bluetooth syncing. I am now able to transfer files and sync contacts, however I am unable to sync my calendar. Every time I try to sync the calendar, I get "An unexpected exception occured while synchronizing the device." Does anyone have any ideas on how to solve this?

Posted by: Bart at March 24, 2006 1:02 PM

Bart, you might just have too many events in your calendar: many people have said that the RAZR calendar is limited to 60 events, which seems idiotic, but there ya have it.

Posted by: Dave Taylor at March 24, 2006 1:06 PM

Alfred said about Verizon...
> call and complain people, they will listen

I did all my research, and choose Verizon and the Razr. I also bought the USB data kit from Motorola. Then the phone arrived with .03 firmware and no ability to copy my photos (unless I pay them $0.25/pic). I called customer support to complain. The first gal claimed they never supported sync'ing (not even contacts) unless you pay for their Internet service. Got the manager, he said the same thing claiming Verison _never_ supported USB.

I told him it's a feature of the phone, built by Motorola and available from all other carriers. Motorola even sells a kit to support data transfers. He continued to insist Verizon does not support USB (or Bluetooth) for PC connectivity. It's crazy to think they want to charge us to access our photos.

I tried to talk logically about this, but they insisted it's not a camera - it's a phone. And to get your photos you must use their network, and therefore pay them to transfer your photos. I tried asking him how to use the "photo caller ID" feature of the address book. He said I have to take a picture with the phone. I told him that's crazy and I already have my photos in my contact list.

Alfred, do you work for or have an affiliation with Verizon. So far, my few days of experience is "those idiots suck". Should I wait, as you suggest, for the next firmware?

I'm tempted to just cancel and switch carriers. Or should I start hacking my phone and re-enable the built-in features? Can I downgrade to .02, copy my data, then upgrade back to .03?

Posted by: Jim at March 24, 2006 2:53 PM

Thanks for the quick reply Dave. I have tried syncing a different calendar that only has 1 event and I get the same problem. Bummer. Wierd that contacts work fine, but calendar events fail.

Dave-

Excellent article. I followed the instructions to a tee, but I didn't get the "OBEX File Transfer" listed in my Device Services. When I try and browse it says, "Device does not have the necessary services." iSync is working fine, but file transferring is what I was going for. I believe my RAZR is using fireware 3 (GATW_01.0F.03)? Thoughts?

Posted by: Keith at March 24, 2006 9:43 PM

I worked my way through your tutorial, and was successful in most steps. However, when I got to the Devices step in the Bluetooth preference panel, I found that my phone (Razr V3c) does not have the OBEX file transfer ability. Any idea how to get this on my phone? I was able to sync my address book, but the file transfer doesn't work. I am given message that my device is missing the software.

Thanks,

Dave

Posted by: David Fritzinger at March 24, 2006 10:14 PM

Keith, I bet you already know the answer: The ".3" release of the OS disables the OBEX capabilities so you're outta luck. Ditto your comment, Dave.

Both of you should call Verizon and give them a piece of your mind about them disabling a core feature of this telephone so they can force you to use their for-pay network services.

Posted by: Dave Taylor at March 27, 2006 8:50 AM

I too just purchased the Razor V3c through Verizon. Bluetooth transfer capabililties are disabled. Verizon tells me the OBEX capabilities with the Razor V3c are a Motorola software problem. I have been on hold with Motorola for 2 hours. Anyone have any other updates, patches, hacks or important information to share with all the frustrated Verizon Razor V3c customers? I am ready to take the phone back to Verizon and hurl it at the salesman that sold it to me.

I recently acquired a Razr V3 from Cingular, and then purchased a D-Link DBT-120 so that my G4 power mac would have bluetooth capability. I downloaded the 2 files you suggested, but had the previously mentioned problem of not having a plugins folder in my iSync. I then just attempted to transfer files with the Bluetooth File Transfer app in the utilities folder of my os x 10.3.9. It worked great! the instructions you gave for using the computer to discover the phone worked seamlessly, and i was then able to transfer files and browse my phone with absolutely no problem. just thought i'd share my success story and recommend this d-link adaptor to others who are running into trouble using the hardwired method.

also, i had 2 questions. the first: is there a source from which i can just download games and apps for the razr and then transfer em to my phone? i refuse to pay by the game on this thing. phone companies used to give em for free with the phone....now u gotta buy em? crap!

also, any recommendations for ringtones (length, bit rate, etc)?

Dave, I followed advise to the T. Got RAZR V3c paired and was able to browse the file structure. Able to transfer photos from Powerbook to RAZR and use them for contacts. NOT able to sync anything! Jim,

Ask to be transfered to a bluetooth specialist. I got the same runaround and nonsensical repeated responses from the customer service reps and managers. Honestly, they don't know better.

I am not affiliated with Verizon. I am happy with their service and want to give them the benefit of the doubt. If you push hard enough it will work.

Posted by: Alfred at March 27, 2006 11:28 PM

Just Fantastic!!!

the only challenge I have is similar to teh mad poster above in that when I try to sync my contacts I get a message saying

"The connection was lost while getting the changes from the device.
Device "Mini-T" synchronization failed"

If I turn off Contacts syncing though I can sync the calendar no problem. Any thoughts on the contacts though? Granted I do have quite a few of them... perhaps thats what I will try next.

I synced a mac laptop 1.56 GHz PB running 10.4.5 with my verizon razr running .02 softwared. I can browse the phone exactly as Dave said, using bluetooth This was so great. I can open the picture file on the phone and move them onto my mac, but the ringtone and audio file are empty (I thought I would see the phone ringtones files). Do I simply place new MP3 30 second files into these folders to add ringtones from my itunes files, or must I send myself an email and pick it up on the phone to get the ringtone in the phone?

Unfortunately, I don't have a Prius to do the next step.

I also have a palm m515 that I have lots of contacts in, and synced with iSync. (I did my syncing separately... and did not sync the palm, phone and mac at the same time.) The contact list all transferred to the phone with bluetooth, but be careful, if you have >500 contacts with email etc... you will get >500 speed dials and have to rearrange manually on the phone. The telephone can hold all the contacts, but only has 500 speed dial locations.

I also experienced the failure that David Courtice had with the synch failing, but that was using the previous mac software version. I think the new upgrade cleaned that all up. It also may have to do with the calendar being too large. I choose not to sync my calendar to the phone. It is much too large. You could only sync a week or so, and what is the use of that when you have a palm or other PDA with your complete synced calendar?

I'm also afraid to sync the phone again, since it might rearrange the speed dials, and call the entries duplicates, since I moved a lot of them on the phone. What do you think? Thank you for all of the helpful information.

Posted by: Perry at April 3, 2006 10:25 PM

Perry and jimi, it sounds like you just don't have the ".2" release of the phone OS, you're instead stuck with the newer ".3" release which disables much of OBEX which is what you need to browse the phone from your computer. There are some instructions on how you can 'flash' the earlier OS onto your phone at howardforums.com but I haven't tried them myself. Proceed at your own risk. :-\

That being said, why the heck can't I sync any more? Someone please explain this to me!! Says on apple's site for iSync that it is a supported phone. Hello?!?! Very frustrated. I'd like to learn how to hack into my phone and change more stuff, but for now, can I least keep my contacts and calendar working with the supposedly wonderful mac technology?

S/W Version: 04.04.00R

Like I said, had it working before. Have followed Apple's "advice." I have downloaded the combo update, no change. Just want my stuff to work the way it was intended. I like Alltel service. I bought the phone for the features, including bluetooth to my mac.

I phoned both Apple and Verizon about this. I had the Motorola Verizon RAZR the very first day of release. I used the modification to the files and the phone worked beautifully. I synced and browsed the device. However I recently had to replace the phone through my insurance with a newer batch. I can pair the phone using the new version of iSync but can not browse it. As with other users above, when attempting to browse device I get " Device does not have the necessary services"...

This is a result of Verizon crippling the bluetooth on the PHONE, not isync or Apple. Verizon, after having been sued last year for doing this to the Motorola v710, have crippled the OBEX in order to force customers to pay 25 cents a file or to buy the USB cable. It's a ridiculous slap in the face, one which makes me want to throw this phone back at them and sign on with Cingular or T-Mobile. At least they don't blatantly screw their customers over.

Hey Dave,

I went through all the steps outlined, and when it came to the prompt to select features to check off to be used with Bluetooth, it said "no features have been discovered." This would've been where I checked off Obex File Transfer, just after entering in the passkey.

Any thoughts? I can't seem to figure this one out on my own.

http://wiki.howardforums.com/motorola/index.php/Motorola_V3c_Tutorial:_Flashing_to_Alltel_User_Interface
via google. These instuctions are great, very well done. I now have a Verizon Razr w/ Alltel software flashed to it. All the BT goodies work great and now I can skin and customize my Razr! The only down side is I had to use my PC for 100% of this method :(
Thanks Dave, and Thanks again to everyone that's commented here.

I have a Verizon wireless RAZR VC3 with firmware .02 so OBEX transfers are enabled. I bought a Bluetooth adapter and connected it to my phone. I paired my phone with my computer and then I go to Browse Device. I click Browse and it says its validating device... but then it says unable to validate device. What am I doing wrong? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

The new software for V3c from verizon does not let you file transfer. My old V3c from December has no problem? Help

Thanks Dave for your help! I was able to sync my razr to my ibook, But I am trying to use my razr as a modem and dial up to the internet thru bluetooth but am not having any luck. I had a LG 6000 that I used a usb data cable in the past and that worked great, but trying to do that with this phone is frusterating, Have any ideas?

Posted by: Jill at April 15, 2006 11:35 PM

For those with the .02 firmware who still can't choose the OBEX service at the end of the setup wizard OR can't transfer info:

I had the same problem and it was because I allowed XP to automatically find and install the drivers and those drivers didn't cut it. I could install my phone as a device in Bluetooth, but "My Bluetooth Places" never showed itself and there was no transfer protocol. The solution is to use a driver that's specific to your dongle(Bluetooth USB adapter). You might be able to get the drivers off the interntet from the manufacturer, or if you want to make it easier yet, purchase a dongle that comes with a driver/software CD!! They're a tad pricer usually but well worth the minimal cost to avoid frustration. Just a thought, and I'm sure the Windows drivers will work with some dongles but...will it work with yours is the question.

So, Dave, am I correct in all the reading of your instructions, I am able to connect my laptop using the bluetooth technology, or signal from my Razr v3c?

I Can't get VPC to work at all, and the 1 PC I have access to is running Winderz 98se.. I'm Not haveing any luck getting Files/Pix/Etc. moved or seen. I think WE (As a Group) need a way to FLASH the phone to .02 Firmware.. I can Sync everything with iSync, but Tunes/Pix Nothing.. Got to be a MAC way to do it using .03 Firmaware or Flash Back...

looks like we may have a reprieve here. apparently verizon has released a .04 firmware update that doesn't remove the OBEX profiles.

for those of you with .03 firmware, be sure to read comment #7 on the link below. if true, this could be a significant issue.

(((Quote))) From the Thread!... And NO WAY to get a MAC to Flash... We'll just have to wait I'd Guess?..

(Quote)
I mean, we don't even know for sure, why going from .02 to .04 has obex, but going from .03 to .04 doesn't... We only have GUESSES as to why...

We can speculate that New phones shipping with .04 WONT have OBEX because Most of Verizon's stock should have received the .03 firmware updates.. SO if they just take the phones from stock, up them to .04, no OBEX...

Hi Dave and many thanks. I am part of the Verizon V710 settlement group, trying to decide between an e815 and a Razr V3c. (Like where do I choose to take my hits!)

Got this part: Verizon disabled the OBEX features we bought the phone for. We're all angry about it. version 4 software MIGHT be a sign they are giving us back those features. Or not.

Maybe we can flash the Razr V3c back to version 2 software. With a PC. And Maybe not.

Wow, vibe then ring also disabled. Wonder why? It's not like they can make a penny on that with Vcast. I did find something about a seem and using Windows XP... Anyway...

There is a page about using the e815 as a bluetooth modem with OS X:

http://stevenfettig.com/mythoughts/archives/000189.php

Any luck getting the Razr V3c to work as a bluetooth modem?

Many thanks,

Hello, I just went through your process here, and everything seems to work fine. However, there is an issue, as several people have mentioned above. There are only three folders - no vst or mixedmedia folders!! No place to put themes or skins and such. Any idea why some people have only three folders? I have a Cingular RAZR.

Hi, I wanted to let people know about another tutorial for downgrading the RAZR V3c firmware from version .03 to .02 to get OBEX file services. Yesterday I followed this tutorial: http://whatsbruin.net/2006/03/25/software-downgrade/, and my firmware is now down to .02, and I can browse the files on the phone via bluetooth from my powerbook. Hurrah!

While I was doing the downgrade (using a Windoze machine, which is required) my phone charged via the mini usb cable. However, while nearly all other functions are enabled, my phone tells me it can't charge when plugged into my laptop. Anyone have any directions on how to make charging through USB work on a laptop? ( I charge everything else through that USB port.)

Dave, I can´t download the files you mention in the following link: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=9PH5DVRU

Could you please send it to me to my email, I just can´t find it on the web.

Thanks a lot, and congratulations for your great work...
Victor

Posted by: Victor Cabrera at May 15, 2006 9:13 PM

Victor, yeah, that megaupload is a horrible site and a pain to work with, but I don't know where else to point you. Here's the key: they have a timer that they want you to wait 15 seconds before they'll show you the download link so you're stuck looking at their advertising (which of course endears me to their advertisers...)

On the top right, about 1" from the very top of the page, is a small box that says "Please wait 15 seconds..." 14 seconds, 13 seconds, etc, until, finally, maybe 30-60 seconds after you get to the page, it says "Click here to download."

Since I'm sure the resultant link is time-encoded, there's no point in me including the link here because it won't work by the time you read this, unfortunately.

I wish there was an alternative that didn't force us through these ridiculous flaming hoops, but as of now I don't know of any.

TIP: To sync the V3C (verizon version) with Outlook running under Windows XP, you need the latest version of the Razr software (GATW 1.15.04). To check, you can look on your phone under setting&tools/device info/other/s/w version. Next, use Mobile PHone Tools 4.0. I used the USB connection. However, you have to manually selected the modem/connection. The trick to this is: YOU MUST SELECT THE PHONE as V3CM. If you select V3C (w/o the "M"), you won't get the calendar icon and you can't sync. Hope this helps.

Dave:
Great instructions! Worked great with my BlueTooth eMac and my Razr V3c from Verizon. But it only worked AFTER I had flashed my phone back to GATW 1.0F.02 down from Verizon's crippled 1.15.04.

I've been able to transfer pics and sounds from the Emac to the Razr with no problems. However, I have not been able to delete any of the original ringtones that came with the Razr. I highlight the ringtone, drag it to the Trash icon, get a popup that says "This action cannot be undone", click the OK button and then there's a message that says "The last operation failed. Bad request" Any ideas?

Bluetooth file browsing and transfer worked fine for me under OS X 10.3.9, but not syncing.

I just installed 10.4 from disk today so I could try the hack described in the post. isync recognized my phone but gave me persistent connection errors.

So I updated to 10.4.6 and the isync for contacts gets further but craps out at the end:

For what it's worth, I just switched from Verizon to U.S. Cellular (after being a Verizon customer for over 10 years, dating back to when they were "Ameritech"). I had a Treo 650 phone with Verizon that wasn't insured, and it fell off my belt clip and got run over by a car last week.

When I checked to see what my replacement options were, Verizon was totally uncooperative. (I had their "family plan" with 2 phones on it. My brother uses the 2nd. phone.) It turns out his phone was old enough to qualify for the "new every 2" discount, but my damaged Treo wasn't. Nonetheless, they refused to let me buy a "new every 2" phone using his phone number and putting it in service in place of the Treo. They said it had to replace *his* phone only!

Considering U.S. Cellular's unique policy of "all incoming calls are free" on their phones, plus the fact they offered unlimited data for only $9.95 a month extra on a plan, it FAR exceeded Verizon's best deals - so I jumped ship. (Even happier I did it now that I see Verizon's policy of locking down features is still going on with the Razrs!)

I got a Razr V3c with U.S. Cellular and I'm happy to report it has no restrictions. Bluebooth sync with OBDEX works perfectly (OS X 10.4.6 here). iSync reports I can't sync calendar appointments though ... only contacts - but that seems to be par for the course right now.

The format is 3GP, what do I do with this ?????

I gave up on debugging the problem and went with the Onsync solution suggested above for Bell users. Works beautifully for Contacts and since ISync works for Calendar, looks like I'm set.

Verizon users - when messing around in the 10.4.6 version of the MetaClasses.plist file I noticed the following under the class definition for the Verizon V3C:

com.motorola.razorV3cVerizon

... several lines removed...

ServiceName
com.apple.synchro
ServiceProperties

... several lines removed...

supportsCalendarsSync

I don't have a Verizon phone but the more programmer-minded among you might try removing the last two lines, or changing the "false" to "true" and seeing if that lets you sync your Calendars.

That's enough hacking for me. :-)

Posted by: K. Archer at May 30, 2006 1:51 PM

oops - sorry, in my last post, looks like some of the xml formatting got interpreted incorrectly and there's some text missing.

At any rate, the gist is the MetaClasses.plist file sets a key called "supportsCalendarsSync" to "false". Perhaps these lines are hackable.

Your mileage may vary.

Posted by: K. Archer at May 30, 2006 1:56 PM

Hi Dave, your hack has also worked with my V3i Motorola although there seems to be a restricted file selection that only gives access to the MMC card, audio, video and pictures, any ideas how i can get into the ringtomes and wallpapers etc?

Hello Dave,

Your tutorial was very helpful for me to get my razr finally connected. I was having serious problems, like my computer couldn't find the phone unless I had checked "Any Device" as opposed to a "mobile phone". Anyway, I have a question.

I really would like to put a new theme on my razr. There are several sites you can download them from, but for some reason, no one talks about how for Mac users. It's become really frustrating! On the Bluetooth file transfer you can only transfer pictures, audio, and videos, but there is nowhere to drop themes. Do you have any ideas?

Much appreciated! -Megan

Posted by: Megan at June 11, 2006 10:34 PM

hey megan i read your problem and i found this on the web maybe it works also for themes you should give it a try "First you have to pair your phone with your Mac, using the Bluetooth preference pane (Set up new device...), which involves discovering the phone with your Mac, then typing in the access PIN on your phone.

Once this is accomplished, set the Bluetooth menubar item to show in the top menubar (a selection within the preference pane). Click the menubar item, and select the 'Send File...' menu selection. This will bring up the Send File dialog. First select the device you wish to send the file to (most likely your newly paired phone), then select the file you wish to send (the game .jar file). The computer will then send the file to the phone, which will download the file as if it were being downloaded over a wap connection."

I recently purchased a Motorola V3c phone and i'm having some issues getting ringtones onto it. I'm using OSX 10.4.6 and i can't seem to transfer any files onto it via Bluetooth. It seems i've got iSync to work though, but not file transfers (I believe that's called OBEX). I looked around and saw on some message boards that OBEX was supposed to be enabled in the latest firmware for the V3's (.4) but I ran it by the Verizon store and they told me that it was already up to date. They then told me that the only way i could transfer music to the phone was if i purchased a V3m instead of my V3c. This is ridiculous though because the V3c plays mp3 files... it don't see any reason to enable mp3 files as ringtones if you can't get any to the phone. Do you know any way around this? I also have a USB cable that connects my Mac to the phone, do you know any way of getting songs over to the phone, Bluetooth or USB?
I'd really appreciate it.

I was so excited when I found this page during a Google search. (It shows up when you search for about anything related to a Razr v3!). Unfortunately, I have the Verizon Razor with the .4 firmware which disables OBEX or whatever.

So I decided I'd try and flash the phone back to .2.. and I've been Google searching for about two days on how the hell to flash my phone.. with no luck. I feel like I'm chasing one program to another program. And of course you can't ask this kind of question in elitist forums (like the Howard Forums)..

Can anyone enlighten me to how I'd go about this? Thanks!

Attention fellow Verizon customers!
I have ran into the same problem many of you are having with this tutorial as far as getting the message "Does not have the necessary services" when trying to browse device. So I browsed from article to article trying to find out why I cant transfer files between my Mac and Razr v3c.
Here's what I read in a nut shell. Verizon stripped the OBEX code needed for file transfers out of ver.3 so we would have to use (and pay for) their network aka Vcast. Many customers have complained so Verizon released a newer version of the software, ver.4, which you have to physically go to a verizon store to have the update installed. Catch is, it is an update so if you have a Razr v3c running ver.3, the update wil not install the OBEX code.
I have read that to get around this, you have to downgrade to ver.2 then you could go to a verizon store and upgrade if you wanted to. Ver.4 is supposed to speed up the functions in your phone. I haven't tried this myself and am still debating wheather or not it is safe to downgrade. If anyone has downgraded to ver.2 or have gotten this tutorial to work with ver.3, please post it : )

Posted by: Jcrew at June 18, 2006 1:17 PM

Regarding JCrew's post:
Assuming that I'm cool with the downgrade, what exactly would you do to get this thing working (if you were me)? Go to the Verizon store and say, "hey downgrade my phone for me"?
Thanks a lot

Echoing the June 6 question, has anyone seen anything anywhere that enables any of these OBEX features on the RAZR V3m, which is what Verizon Wireless is now selling in the US (i.e., no more V3c)? Ironically, this is the phone I will be getting free as part of the VZW V710 class action settlement. At least this time, VZW tells us up front that they've crippled OBEX.

Posted by: Joe Gurman at June 20, 2006 6:34 AM

We're able to get our early V3c's to do file transfer, but calendar sync stopped working recently. We took our phones in for the F/W upgrade, and VZW idiots zapped both of our phones w. the upgrade. We lost our contacts, everything stored in our old phones. They were replaced by "refurbished" units that have OBEX stripped that says "does not have the necessary service" when we trid to xfr photos. Now the only way we can retrieve our photos is to send them as multimedia massages. Frankly, I'm fed up with VZW at this point. My work GSM RAZR has all the features that VZW stripped off. I'm going with Cingular next time.

Posted by: d at June 23, 2006 9:29 PM

Okay, I've read through regarding the OSX/V3c Bluetooth transfer. Now, I just got my Moto Razr V3 BLK from Cingular December 2005. I'm looking to buy a new MacBook running 10.4.6 within the next few weeks. Now my question is this: Does the method provided work with Cingular Raxr V3's as well? I've sucessfully connected it to 10.3.9 and 10.4.1 previously, but I was only able to connect and sync the contacts to Address Book, and the calendar to iCal, no photo/image transfer.

Any (and all) help and/or suggestions would be great.

- Matt

Posted by: Matt at June 25, 2006 7:53 PM

Matt - You should have no problems doing BT file xfr w. Cingular GSM RAZR V3; see my Jun23 posting. I have one, and it works. Verizon is now selling the V3m which replaces the V3c. The V3m supports micro-SD, and should be able to do song/file xfr between PC(Win Media Player 10) and Phone. VZW markets the V3m as the 1st mulitmedia/music player phone even though the original V3c can play video & music, but it's file xfr & sync capabilities are intentionally crippled by VZW.
BTW - I've seen a lot of BLK RAZR with poorly fitted top cover displays; incluing mine.

Re: Dave's question of 6th June about the V3m: I have just acquired a RAZR V3m phone from Verizon. Using iSync 2.3 I could immediately sync Address Book to the RAZR, but only a few iCal events were transferred and it got the data wrong in all of those. I have now followed Dave's prescriptions above for modifying the iSync files in my PowerMac G5, but when I try the "Browse Device" command in Bluetooth I get the dreaded "Device does not have the necessary services." It still does no better on iCal data.

I am ready to try the F/W upgrade to Version 4 mentioned by JCrew on 18th June, but does anyone know where this is documented by Verizon?

Hi Dave & other helpful people,

I just got a PINK MOTO RAZR V3 from Cingular and I have an iBook G4 with version 10.4.6 (MAC OS X) and I can send pictures from my phone to the laptop but when I click on the menu bar to "Browse Device/Send File" NOTHING happens/NOTHING pops up/no menus come up (I can't send stuff from my laptop to my pink razor)! I looked in the resources folder and they only have connections for black and silver V3.

Is the problem b/c they don't have a icon for PINK V3 razors?!?!

What should I do???

THANKS FOR ANY AND ALL OF YOUR HELP!

I've been having troubles with my Razr powering down randomly, so I went to a Verizon store to see if they could help. They did a couple things (hope they work...) including flashing the software to the GATW_01.15.04 version. At first, I couldn't get bluetooth to work after that, but I've discovered that all I needed to do was reauthenticate the phone. So if this happens to anyone else, don't panic! : )

Dave,
I have paired my bluetooth correctly and i can browse all my files (which is amazing), but when trying to sync with isync (for calendar or contacts), my powerbook has found my phone, but says it cannot connect this this device. I just read through all the posts and for some reason I cannot find the answer to my question. thanks! (oh, and apparently I already have version .02... i see that this is good, but i don't know why) PLEASE HELP!

I just switched from Cingular to VZW and the V3C, S/W .04. Confirm that OBEX worked fine with V3C and Cingular, and does not with VWZ. What burns me even more is the ignorance of, and misinformation conveyed by, the VZW "technical" staff.

In the last week I've been on the horn with their 800 no. several times and have visited three different retail locations in Manhattan staffed by "technicians." One "techician" at 42nd St. today asked me for "my Bluetooth" when I explained my OBEX concern. Obviously, he'd never heard of OBEX; in response to his request that I show him my BT, I angrily responded that what he meant was a BT HEADSET/MICROPHONE, and explained, like Aristotle, the "Bluetooth," as such, was intangible and ineffable and just "out there in the ether."

CNET reported in May that VWZ would be making a BIOS update available in-store to enable OBEX, but no one I've spoken with at VZW has the slightest clue. The fellow today wanted to sell me the $29.95 VCAST package containing a CD-ROM, headset, andUSB-to-mini-USB. Works only with Wintel, however. When I asked he they could flash me back to SW .02, they looked aghast, in horror at the thought, a reaction typical of the delusional confidence in "progress" and the "new" that's made America the greatest nation on the face of the earth. [Sorry; it's an election year . . . .]

Someone at the 800 number advised I get an LGVX8100, which she claimed was not blocked, but everyone else disputes this, and it's impossible to find anyone who knows what they're talking about. Frustrating, to say the least.

Mr. Taylor's tutorial, BTW, was a model of clarity; if only it worked (though no fault of his).
