Now that I have a humble fan page on Facebook, I’d like to have a simple button on add to my blog so people can click and become fans. Surely there’s some way to do that? If so, I sure can’t find it on Facebook!
I can help you with that and don’t call me Shirley!
No, more seriously, Facebook is rather weak on tools to help you have its content infiltrate your Web site, profile pages, and other content. There’s a way you can create a “like” button for your personal profile, but a fan page? Not so much.
Fortunately some friends of mine over at BlitzLocal saw the same problem and has addressed it by writing a simple tool to help you create just these links.
To start, here’s the tool they built: Facebook “Like” Builder. The key portion of it looks like this:
The tricky part of using the tool, however, is figuring out your fan page number code. I figured it out, though, so you don’t have to stress too much.
Go to your Facebook page and click on “Ads and Pages” on the left side. That’ll take you to a page that has information about your fan page like this:
You don’t need to leave the page. Instead, you’ll want to right-click (or Ctrl-Click, if you’re on a Mac) on the “Edit Page” link:
In this case, I’d choose “Copy Link Address” but it varies by Web browser so yours might be a slight variation thereof.
Now the easiest thing is to simply paste that entire URL into the Facebook button generator box. For me, the link is:
The numeric ID at the end is the only thing needed for the actual button generator, however, so if you do paste the entire URL into the generator box you’ll have to remove all the other stuff before you click the “Generate” button.
For my Ask Dave Taylor fan page, all I need is the 207652508738 value. I put that in the Facebook Fan Page ID box and click “Generate”:
There’s some sort of clipping problem on the left button in my browser, but the right one looks great, so I’ll grab the HTML code and, just for fun, add it here:
Click on it and, um, join my fan page while you’re at it. Did it work? I hope so!

Same here. My company page on facebook under Pebbles in my Pocket has no search bar. I have talk with so many people and they do not know how to fix it and get it back. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!
Thank you!

I used your link, and I got my code… but where do I paste that in? Do you know why I can’t even see a search bar on my band page?
Please help! Still really lost… I created a band page… I saw info on the LIKE button and LIKE box, but those both seem to give you web codes for other websites (NOT FACEBOOK) I am trying to set up a DJ Musician Band page, that people can LIKE through searching me on facebook. It doesn’t even show me a search bar where I can look up people. If I still do the codes, where do I put the code in? My personal bio section? This is so not easy to do.. please help! I am trying to set up a page along the lines of this: https://www.facebook.com/maxvangeli but right now I can’t even go to another page and LIKE it when i’m logged in with my new band page…
thanks
ted
Since I wrote this blog entry, there’s a new – easier! – option available for you to explore. Simply click on:
https://developers.facebook.com/docs/reference/plugins/like/
and you’ll find that it’s the official Facebook way to create a Like button.
How can I create a “like” button for my Facebook fan page?
“Go to your Facebook page and click on “Ads and Pages” on the left side. That’ll take you to a page that has information about your fan page like this:”
could not find “Ads and Pages” button on my facebook page anywhere. so i am dead in the water
@Andy the facebook link “https://developers.facebook.com/docs/reference/plugins/like/” isonly for ppl to like the page that they are on, ie blog page. Then it will ref on their wall you as the creator, but to put a LIKE button that automatically likes your page is something entirely different and just what these fine gentleman have provided. Thanks a million.
although the link generator on the left didnt work, but the right side did!
Cool thanks for sharing this 🙂
You can just the URL of your Facebook page and put it in the URL box on this page:
https://developers.facebook.com/docs/reference/plugins/like/
It works totally fine. No reason to do anything more complicated.
Thanks so much, this is just what I was looking for and incredibly easy to follow.
i hereby apply to have fan in my facebook okay how to do that instantly please ???
Actually, it’s even easier than this.
You can use the default Facebook code from their developer documentation and just give the URL of your Facebook fanpage.
I’ve written an article, about the differences between the Like Box, Like Button and Share Button – as well as when and how to use them:
http://thinksync.com.au/blog/social-media/liking-sharing-and-when-to-use-them
If you have more than 25 fans, you can even have a vanity url for your fanpage, making it easy to use the right URL for your Like button.
Hope this helps!
Kelsey
Well, I got the Airplane reference this time. Thought you should know 😉
