Mac iBook / PowerBook won't sleep when closed?

My partner's 12inch Apple iBook no longer sleeps when she puts the lid down. I've never had to fix this kind of problem and hope you can help, hence the email!

Dave's Answer:

You're not the first person to encounter this sort of problem with a laptop, but have faith, there are a number of standard paths you can travel to find a solution to this problem.

Here are the four top possible solutions to fix your sleepless, insomniac iBook, according to Apple:

  1. Check your Energy Saver preferences to make sure that you've allowed your Mac to sleep: From the Apple menu, choose System Preferences. Click Energy Saver, then click the Sleep tab. Make sure that the two sliders are not set to "Never" sleep.
  2. If DVD Player is the active application, your computer won't go to sleep even when it's left idle. Either switch to another application or quit DVD Player.
  3. If you're using an iBook or PowerBook that won't sleep when you close its lid, make sure that the keyboard is seated properly. If the lid presses a key when it's closed, it will prevent your computer from sleeping.
  4. If you're using a Mac OS that's older than Mac OS X 10.3 Panther, turn off the faxing option. From the Apple menu, choose System Preferences. Click Print & Fax, then click the Faxing tab. Deselect the "Receive faxes on this computer" checkbox.

If none of those do the trick, you can try reseting some of the NVRAM (non-volatile RAM) settings by doing this:

  1. reboot while holding option-command-o-f (boot into open firmware)
  2. type reset-nvram
  3. type reset-all
  4. reboot the iBook

Good luck!

Thank you for posting this so I could Google it when my PowerBook would not stay asleep. I'd sleep it and it would wake immediately. My problem represents a slight variation on what you covered here. In my case, I was not able to solve the problem until I remembered that one of my keys has been little sticky. I tapped it to hopefully release it, and after that the Powerbook slept successfully. The stuck key must have been sending a constant "down" event to the system, preventing sleep. Your suggestion #3 clued me in. Thanks again!

I am a former Apple Service Technician. It is highly possible that your reed switch cable/sensor is bad. It is a cheap part but has a decent amount of labor involved.

I have a slightly different but related problem. My Aluminum Powerbook has a broken latch, and won't stay closed. Is there a way to turn off the feature that the computer wakes up when the lid opens? I know I can sleep the computer without closing the lid, but if I then put the computer in my backback, the lid closes and then opens again a bit, and the computer wakes up. I would like it to stay slept until I press a key. I am currently running OS 10.3, but also have a family pack of 10.4 that I haven't installed yet.

Thanks for your help!
