Latest edition of "Teach Yourself Unix in 24 Hours"?

I received this lovely email message from a reader this morning: "Just wanted to thank you for "Teach Yourself Unix in a Week." I read the whole thing cover to cover back in '94, when I was sleeping on a cot at work (!). It got me started in the world of Unix and has provided me employment ever since. My buddy Nick and I owe both you and Kamran Hussein a night of beers for kicking off our sys admin careers."

Dave's Answer:

It's always a pleasure as a writer to get messages like this, because one of the greatest motivations for working is to help others and influence lives positively, so this is just a great thing to hear.

Even better, the latest edition of Teach Yourself Unix in 24 Hours, the fourth edition, is coming out this week from Sams/Macmillan too! [warning: The web site is not yet updated to reflect the new content. But it will be soon. I promise!]

If you'd like to know more about the new edition, why not pop over to Amazon and have a peek at what we've put up there?

Do you have a success story about one of my books? I'd love to hear about it!

Dave, I second everything these guys have to say about this book. My buddy Clint and I read Unix in 24 Hours years ago when getting our first shot at being System Administrators. We have been Sysadmins ever since, and whenever teaching users how to do something in Unix, Unix in 24 Hours is "the book" I recommend to them.

Howdy Dave,

I just thought I'd point out to you and your readers that my favorite online bookstore, nerdbooks.com just got the 4th edition in and they're selling it for $15.89. That is 4 bucks cheaper then Amazon, and if you live in Dallas, TX you can pick it up there saving the shipping.

I'm getting my copy tomorrow.

Erik

Hi,

What version/flavour of Unix did use throughout the book?

I use AIX at work but do not have a test box I can use so would like to create a VM on my PC but now sure which version I should use for this book?

Thanks,

Dave Taylor said, on November 5, 2010 9:24 PM:

Thanks for the question, Craig. It's been a while, but I'm pretty darn sure that it's generic Posix Unix that I wrote about for almost the entire book. I've used HP-UX, Linux, AIX, SunOS and more in my time, so I tried to have things cross-compatible...

Starbucks coffee cup I do have a lot to say, and questions of my own for that matter, but first I'd like to say thank you, Dave, for all your helpful information by buying you a cup of coffee!

I do have a comment, now that you mention it!

I will never send you any unsolicited email. Ever.
