Killzone 2 Walkthru Part IX: Maelstra Barrens

[This is the ninth of a series of Killzone 2 walkthrus we'll be publishing, all with videos and all written by gamer Alex Juel. If you have questions about the game, please don't hesitate to post them here and Alex will do his best to answer them. If you haven't already read it, start with Killzone 2: Corinth River, Killzone 2: Blood Meridian, Killzone 2: Visari Square, Killzone 2: Salamun District, Killzone 2: Salamum Bridge, Killzone 2: Suljeva Village, Killzone 2: Tharsis Refinery, and Killzone 2: The Cruiser, and stay tuned for the final part, Visari Palace, coming soon.]

Here's a summary of the game's storyline (courtesy of Wikipedia): Killzone 2 is set on the planet Helghan, the home-world of the Helghast who invaded an Interplanetary Strategic Alliance (ISA) colony. Two years after the Helghast assault on Vekta, the ISA has launched an assault on the enemy's homeworld. The ISA goal is to capture the Helghast leader, Scolar Visari, and bring the Helghast war machine to a halt.

In the game you assume the role of Sergeant Tomas "Sev" Sevchenko, a battle-hardened veteran of the special forces unit Alpha Team, who are on a mission to eliminate the Helghast threat. During the invasion, Sev's unit is deployed behind enemy lines to assist the main invasion force. Responsible for securing the enemy capital of Pyrrhus, the team quickly discovers that the Helghast are a formidable enemy. Not only have they adjusted to Helghan's hostile conditions, they have also harnessed the power of the frequent lightning storms.

A cold, barren, unforgiving world, Helghan provides a ready defense with thick, acidic air, dust clouds, and violent lightning storms. Sev discovers his squad is not just fighting enemy forces - their fiercest opponent may be the planet itself.

Now, ready to get started? Great!

Dave's Answer:

Cargo Impact Site

After receiving your orders, wait for Rico to lead the way. He'll take you down to the cargo impact site, where you'll find an enemy EXO. Get in the EXO and head down the trail.

Here's the move list:
• Machine Gun:R1
• Missiles: L1
• Jump: X
• Zoom: R3
• Sprint: L3

In the next area, stick to the very right side of the wall, going around the entire middle area. You'll be able to kill the Helghast much easier from here and suffer less damage to the EXO. Jump over the crevice to get to the other side. Stay behind the rocks and clear the area.

Continue along the wall and stay off to the side before going past the walls to the next area, because Helghast will come out and attack you with missile launchers.

Industrial Ghost Town

After entering the canyon, go to the right of the wall and take cover behind the large rocks. You'll be able to kill all of the Helghast on both sides of this canyon from behind the rock safely. If someone shoots an RPG, you'll be able to block them with the rock in plenty of time.

Clear the area and follow Rico and Natko through to the other side. In the next area, don't allow yourself to be in the wide open, because more Helghast with missile launchers will come out on the ground to attack. There are also several Higs up in the buildings.

Follow Rico again and jump down the small cliff to the road. When Rico tells you to take out the enemy, destroy the tank across the bridge up ahead. Then turn right and shoot the other tank up above. Shooting the bridge with a missile should take care of it.

Grave of the New Sun

You'll meet up with Narvilles team after crossing the bridge. Follow them to an area with two tanks moving back and forth behind several walls. Destroy them and move forward. There are ramps leading up to higher ground.

There are three tanks up there that you have to destroy as well as a few Helghast up on the building that have missile launchers so take all of them out from a distance. Go back down the ramps to recover if you need to.

You might have to go behind the building on the right side to get to the last tank, and you'll be ready to finish up Killzone 2 by going through the Visari Palace!
