Jargon question: URLs, blogs, spillover pagerank, etc.?

I'm pretty clued into computing, but when I read your weblog, I have to admit that I'm a bit baffled by some of the things you talk about. Specifically, can you please tell me two basic things: what's a URL and what's a blog, and then explain to me both what "spillover pagerank" is and what a subdomain is too? Thanks!!

Dave's Answer:

You bet, and I apologize for any confusion caused by my occasional lapse into tech jargon. One demerit for that, for sure! :-)

URL = Universal Resource Locator = the address of a Web page.

For example, http://www.microsoft.com/ is a URL

Blog = short for ‘weblog’ or web diary, it’s evolved to a set of tools that make it really quite easy to manage your site in a way that makes it quite easy to add new content on a whim. From a business perspective, blogs are a powerful communications mechanism and just happen to also be super search-engine friendly, a definite benefit.

Spillover pagerank = the pagerank that you get because another page on the Web with pagerank X points to you. Typically this is a straight mathemetical equation, though I think it’s simplified: If I have a pagerank 6 page and point to two external pages elsewhere on the net, then each will get a “pagerank 6/2” or pagerank 3 “vote”: the more pagerank votes you get, the more important the search engines will think your page (remember, for modern search engines, there are no more Web sites, just lots of individual pages!) and the better results you’ll get. [more info on pagerank]

Subdomain = the section of the domain after your domain name. So “intuitive.com” is my domain name, but the “www” in “www.intuitive.com” is my subdomain name. I also have “blog.intuitive.com”, “mail.intuitive.com”, “rss.intuitive.com” and so on, though not all show up as web pages, per se.

Anyway, I hope that helps clear things up, and in general, if you want to check out some jargon or look for the explanation of an acronym, I suggest you go to Wikipedia as it has a lot of good information.
