Is Santa Claus real?

Dave, I have the most basic question of the season for you to tackle: Is Santa real or not?

Dave's Answer:

Okay, well, let me answer first for those under 10yo children who might be reading this weblog: of course he is!

Now, let's dig into it just a bit further, as the mythology of Santa Claus has a long and interesting history. First off, Santa's proper name is Saint Nicholas, though he's picked up a lot of nicknames throughout the years, including Kris Kringle, Father Christmas and Sinterklaas.

Saint Nicholas of Myra was a saint who lived back in the 4th Century in Byzantia (modern-day Turkey) who had the reputation of secretly giving gifts to the poor. Most famously, legend has it that he presented three desperately poor daughters of a Christian with dowries so they wouldn't end up as prostitutes.

St. Nicholas is still revered as the patron saint of seamen, merchants, archers, children, prisoners, pawnbrokers, and even prostitutes. He's also one of the patron saints of Russia, now that I think about it. A busy guy.

st-nick-santa-clausSaint Nick inspired two legends: Nikolaus in Germany, and Sinterklaas in the Netherlands, both of which directly contributed to the legend of Santa Claus himself.

Depictions of Santa Claus as a jolly, heavy white bearded older man are apparently directly lifted from the Russian mythological character Ded Moroz (Grandfather Frost). Ded Moroz is historically represented as wearing a red coat, fur boots and a long white beard. Since Russian immigration directly influenced much of the Western European and then American tradition, it's very likely that our current picture of Santa Claus is directly from Grandfather Frost.

Many of the historical legends behind Santa Claus also involve children leaving out fodder in their shoes for the horse that Saint Nicholas, Sinterklaas, or similar rode. Most likely that's what has evolved into the modern tradition of hanging stockings by the fireplace, actually.

The definitive modern interpretation of Santa Claus, however, is widely agreed to have been The Night Before Christmas (formerly known as "A Visit from St. Nicholas", actually), wherein Santa is described as being heavyset and riding a sleigh pulled by eight reindeer who are named for the first time in this 1823 publication. Another popular publication early in the 19th Century was The Life and Adventures of Santa Claus, by Wizard of Oz author L. Frank Baum.

Okay, so that's the academic side of things. Interesting, but missing a certain level of heart, of soul.

So is there a Santa Claus?

Well, we live in a world where the idea of someone rewarding good behavior in this life, rather than the next (or at the door to the Pearly Gates) sounds darn nice, and particularly for children, is a good reminder of the rewards of thrift, virtue, compassion and honesty. And those are sorely missing attributes in our modern world, if you ask me.

So yes, I think that there is a Santa Claus.

I'll certainly make sure we leave a plate of cookies and glass of milk out on Christmas Eve. How about you?

The classic "Yes Virginia there is a Santa Claus" editorial answers this question as well now as it did way back when.

"I am 8 years old. Some of my little friends say there is no Santa Claus. Papa says "If you see it in The Sun it's so.

Please tell me the truth, is there a Santa Claus?"

Sinterklaas in the Netherlands is celebrated on december 5th. The nameday of Saint Nicolas is december 6th. So your cookies are late! :-)

It would be nice (perhaps next year?) to see how the celebrations moved from the beginning of december to the Christmas sideshow?

David said, on December 22, 2005 2:32 PM:

There is definitely a Santa Claus. I saw him when I was a kid. He was in our living room putting presents under the tree.

Well, it turns out that was just our neighbor doing a favor for my parents. But it caused me to believe in Santa Claus much longer than anyone else I knew. After all, I had seen him. And because of that, I had plenty of opportunities to look like a fool arguing with the other kids that Santa was real.

But I suppose it was a great thing for my parents to have set that up.

Bert Love said, on December 23, 2005 2:38 PM:

Many years ago I had tracked down Santa to Grandfather Frost in Russia. In some parts of Russia the snow is so deep that sleighs were parked on the roofs of houses so they wouldn't sink into the snow. A staircase was built alongside the chimney which melted the snow and allowed entrance to the house. The opening to the fireplace was on the outside of the house with a metal door. Stones on the inside of the house radiated heat, perfect for warming their thigh high stockings while the family slept.

So Santa Claus, dressed in the red and white of Saint Nicholas, rode his sleigh to the roof, came down the chimney and left gifts for the children in their stockings hung on the fireplace. More truth than fiction.

If you really want to know if the jolly magical creature Santa clause is real, one method you could use is get some of your friends to each take some cuttings of the "To:... Fr:Santa" labels and then compare the handwriting of the labels. If there is a significant difference in handwriting, for each label, this mystical figure is a fragment of history, tradition, and imagination. Of course, the more friends you have to help you test, the more accurate your results will be.

ian said, on December 16, 2006 3:59 PM:

well, first of all i'm a pre-teen and i stll belive in him. my friends say he's not and some of them say they believe sorta. well, i believe! anyway at school a little student i had to work with to do a activitie for school said his sister saw Santa Claus and Rudolph!!!!!!!!!. I believe too because reseacrhers saw a piece of his sleigh in a desert!!! And on Google Video there was a video on christmas, that you see a light, sparkly comet from a chimney to the tree, and up the chimney and back in 5 seconds! Also, that video was from those reseachers's website, who also made a movie about looking for Santa Claus. Even though lots of novels, and movies say he's not real, still not he's not real to them because they didn't see him or believe in him. So, if you believe in him he'll come!!!!!!!!! And, my whole family still believes in him too. So get's som Eggnog or mostly milk and some cute, tasty cookies, carrots leave it out on a plate, and wait the next day to see that they've been munched, and drinked from!!!!!!!!! Also, i know seeing is not believing, but there is proof, but i also believe in him because i love him and everyone else does too, and I love CHRISTMAS so MUCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
And also, I've seen wrapping paper that I haven't seen before! Not even from Papyrus or Walgreen's!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! So, I believe and my family keeps those wrapping paper!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Anyway, MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

my parents think that santa does not exist and I sometimes think that he sometimes exists because is you stay awake at 3:30 and see nothing than he is fake and besides how can he possibly fit down the chimney and how can reindeer possibly fly and how can he possibly live in the north pole when it is -30 degrees celcius? 1 last thing have you guys ever noticed that presents that say "From Santa" are wrapped in paper that your parents bought?

Amy said, on December 17, 2006 4:03 PM:

I am 10 years old and I believe in Santa Clause. I have been researching and so far, 10 people say yes, they belive in Santa, out of 13. Plus, my friends and I save the labels Santa gives us and all of the labels have the same handwriting. Please believe in Santa! If you start researching, Santa has a lot of different names, of course St. Nick. Just try to research and if you find Santa isn't real, I understand, maybe I was wrong.
One time, my friend called me Christmas morning and said it was an emergancy and I had to get over there quick. Luckily, my friend is my neighbor. So I put my jacket on and ran all the way to my friends' house. When I got there, my friend showed me a huge, snow footprint on their fireplace. We all knew it was Santa's footprint. Do you believe now?
Here's more proof:
My parents believe in Santa! When I was little, I asked them and they said it was more real then anything else in the world. My dad has REALLY bad handwriting and Santa doesn't. My mom is always merry on Christmas morning so obviously, she couldn't have snuck downstairs and put presents under our tree. Trust me, if my mom wakes up in the night, she is REALLY crabby! My dad couldn't have done it either because he is a really hard sleeper! Not even a ginormous orchestra could wake him up! That's why he is always late for work in the morning.
Believe NOW?
Here's more:
My other friend set up a video camera by her Christmas tree and either Santa was there, or it was her Uncle Ralph in a red Santa suit who slid down the chimney easily. I doubt that. She brought the tape into school and now everyone in my class believes in Santa Clause.
NOW do you FINALLY believe?
If you don't, here's more:
Santa once left a candycane in my hand on Christmas. Like I said, my dad won't wake up and my mom will hate herself if she wakes up!
I hope you believe now, because I am all out of proof. If you STILL don't believe, read some of the other writer's proof and then you might just believe. Thanks for taking the time to read my proof. Merry Christmas Santa Believers!

I still think he's real. Trust me, kids just like me will be crushed if you tell them Santa Claus isn't real. Then they will tell there friends and so on and so on and pretty soon we have all the children in the world with no christmas spirit and they will never behave with no motivation. So keep christmas spirit alive.
Merry Christmas!

Hello.

If Kris knew that I was going to type this, he would never forgive me. But let me introduce myself.

I am Karl Kringle. I am Kris' younger brother. And I am here to tell you one thing for a fact, and that he is real.

But it isn't just about him. It's the "Magic" of Christmas that is real.

See, the way it works is, it will show you what you want to see. If you really, REALLY want to believe in my best friend, by big brother, Santa Clause, as he has become to be known as; you will know without a shadow of a doubt, that he is real.

But it works the other way too.

If you are looking for reasons NOT to believe, The "Magic" works that way too. Those that want to compare handwriting, or compare with friends, you will see what you want to see. If you feel he isn't real and want proof, you will find it. But even more special... those that KNOW and are not influenced by non-believers, you will feel the spirit of Christmas in your hearts.

It is for real, friends. Kris is real. And he does so many good things for people everywhere. I just wish you could see him light up when it gets close to his time to give his heart and soul to the world.

No one, and I mean No one... has a better job than him.

Merry Christmas.

Sincerely,

~Karl Kringle

The following is my theory:
Santa Claus is real. If your parents don't believe in him, for their "punishment" they have to buy all your gifts. if they do believe, Santa comes. The reason why it only takes one day is because Santa uses time zones. world it is a Santa doesn't stop at the houses where they don't celebrate things like Christmas. to start out to all those kids just lookin to see if santa is indeed real heres your answer look acording to how old you are; parents check your kids ages and see what u should tell em!

0-9= OF COURS SANTA IS REAL! ARE YOU KIDDING ME!?!

10-12= just the right age to find out the truth! Santa is NOT real!
13+ - SOMEONE TELL THIS POOR KID THE TRUTH! SANTA IS ABSULUTLY POSITIVLY NOT REAL!

Hello People! I was just reading this. I am now 13 and do not believe in santa and i found out at the age of 12. I wanna give advice to the parents. Just tell you kids the truth if they ask ( well if they are like olda than 10). They are better off knowing. Believe me. No one ever told my mom until she was 15. So picture this the 15 year old girl walking around the school agruing with who ever denied his exsistence. Imagin how many people made fun of her! Just don't let your kids have to go through and suffer what my mom had to suffer. Its not fair to them. As much as they want to believe; they are gonna find out one way or another!

Santa started out in about 320, thats right,
the year 320, or something like that, he was
from Turkey. He really DID walk the Earth
at one time. He gave gifts to the poor people
and he was a very kind loving man. His spirit
lives on today, and as far as I know, his spirit
will live forever.

Santa IS real.Ican't prove it but I track him down each year and who would make up something about the FBI and the police chasing him.Whoever doesn't believe in him is getting coal for Christmas!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hannah said, on October 29, 2007 4:38 PM:

Okay...well Santa clause used to be a real person who carved toys and delivered them to children thats how the whole thing got started. there was a real Santa, but he is no longer alive.....he really doesn't deliver presents every Christmas it is parents....they want you to be happy and have fun...they aren't lying they are just trying to raise a good kid. because if you think about it...reindeer don't fly....its impossible...so anyways I am sorry to those of you who didn't know but you had to find out sooner or later. kids usually start figuring it out about uh....9ish maybe 10 or 11. so thanks for reading bye!

OKay im a british person and i belive in him no matter what. Ive already said why but still even if hes real or not its the sprit that counts.

Sure if it all sounds riducles you have to belive in your self not what over people think.

Here in britan we leave mince pies and gin so sure if a achoilic comes over drinks all your gin and eats all your mince pies its if do you belive that?

Im not trying to convice people into beliving im here just to say , do you?

THE COOL ONE said, on November 4, 2007 3:15 PM:

I replying to obives people who will complain about me ( so you dont start a argument )

So what if I belive in him. Ive done some tests like not sending my list and total hiding it from my perants ( in a local park buried under a swing about 3 foot deep. And I got exalty the pressies i asked for.

I what you to ask your self this question
"Did you belive for your self or did you listen to someone els?"

james said, on November 4, 2007 5:51 PM:

look, i believe in santa, because it's fun. the people who believe in him have loads and loads of fun at christmas. and the people who don't, they just sit there, un happy and they just keep saying "santa isn't real". so if u beleive, you will have fun, if you don't, then u will have a miserable christmas. p.s watch the polar express, it holds the key to finding out the true meaning of christmas

james said, on November 4, 2007 6:05 PM:

i got proof. it was christmas eve, and i was laying in bed, i was thinking of what i would get for christmas, and i thought of something on the spot, i hadn't told a single soul that i wanted it, because i only thought that i wanted it at 10 oclock at night on christmas eve, in the morning i got up ran to my sisters room and woke her up, we both ran into the living room and looked at our presents wrapped undern the tree, we started to open them, and guess what, i got the thing i thought of late at night, and inside it was a little card, it said "let me know a little early, with love santa clause". i ran to my mum and dads room and told them what had happened, my parents looked at each other, so confused, later on in the day, i overheard them talking, my mum said to my dad "i don't remember getting him that", i just smiled, and ever since then, i believe

grainne said, on November 5, 2007 10:09 AM:

Sanat IS NOT real.Okay. Heres why:
1) A sleigh pulled by flying reindeer?
2) A BIG FAT man can squeeze down your chimney?
3) He can get around the ENTIRE world in less than 12 hours?
4) SOME COUNTRIES DO NOT EVEN HAVE SANTA CLAUSE, LIKE FOR EXAMPLE, INDIA. Yet evvery single myth about santa says he goes round the entire world? Not possible.

To proove my point, WHY DON'T ALL OF YOU WHO BELEIVE IN HIM, SET YOUR ALRM CLOCK FOR ABOUT 3 OR 4 AM. GET OUT OF YOUR BED AND GUESS WHAT YOU WILL SEE??? *_xX_ YOUR PARENTS LEAVING OUT THE GIFTS FOR YOU_Xx_*

Grainne,
