Invalid or Expired Security Certificate?

Hi Dave. Maybe you can help me with this problem. Whenever I try to go on a site that requires secure log-in, eg. bank, ebay etc. I get a security warning pop-up saying there is a problem with the sites security certificate. It says "the security certificate has expired or is not yet valid" and gives me options to continue yes/no or view certificate. I am operating Windows ME and IE 6, all updated and I also run AVG free anti-virus and spybot regularly. I have searched the web for answers to this and also asked several PPL including my bank's IT helpline. I have done everything suggested but still get the warning!

Dave's Answer:

After thinking about this for a while, I wasn't sure that I had any particularly great solution to propose. My standard response would be to check the security preferences of the Web browser and to try visiting one or more of the sites using a different browser like Firefox.

In a private dialog, however, I was pleased to hear that the chap who sent in this question figured out the problem on his own, and it's a beauty:

Dave, just so you know, I've figured out my problem with the expired or not yet valid security certificates: the date on my computer was set wrong and it thought I was years in the past! Once I fixed the date and time, all of these problems vanished.

This is a simple solution to a vexing problem and, as Sherlock Holmes shared with his colleague Dr. Watson, once you eliminate all other possibilities, what's left, however improbable, must be the solution.

Indeed.

HOLY COW!! I have been looking for a fix to this very same problem for days!! I have worked on pc's for years and have been stumped!! I did everything suggested by everyone from tech friends to Microsoft. I compared my laptop settings to my PC's. I tried altering the installed JAVA. Everything short of formating and re-instal of Windows XP Pro. (Im not THAT anal) Nothing worked! Low and behold after reading your posts I check the date of the laptop and it is off by a year!!! I make the correction and the problem is gone. All I can say is....THANK YOU!! Is there any answer that cant be found on google?? LOL

What if the date is not the problem?

Dj_Lord said, on December 13, 2005 8:39 PM:

I found the same problem. I checked the date and time and they there correct! Somehow I managed to set yesterday's date - and the certificate became valid ! :) Valid for that day. I think that is for the different time zones between USA and Europe.

OMG! This has been bothering me for TWO DAYS! I have gone through articles on SSL, ran countless virus and spyware scans, and uninstalled a VARIETY of software packages. FINALLY I found this site and I went to check the date -- some how the system was set 4 months in the FUTURE on this stupid machine and it was causing the error.

THANK YOU SO MUCH!

The only easy solution was to figure out Firefox or simmilar, for which I had no energy...then as I said to myself..one more click..I landed up here and... read the fix...then remembered I set the time back to make a freeware program work, never to restore it...THANK YOU ^THANK YOU!!!!

I checked my PC's Date and Time settings many times. They are exact. Still I get the error. But I solved it by installing the SOME certificates manually in the Trusted Root Publishers List of IE. But I am unable to do that with Google website. It has an expired certificate which I cannot install. I installed only those which I use. I have Windows XP Pro SP 2 and IE 6. My Microsoft Update doesn't run and my PC is unable to synchronise with the Internet Time. This problems are related to the security certificates.

Now how did the clock get changed is another mystery.

Mike said, on January 25, 2008 2:40 PM:

I found that if the site is being blocked becuase Vista supposedly thinks that the "Certificate had been revoked" you have the ability to go to Internet Options > Advanced and under security, uncheck the box that says something like, Check if the certificate has been revoked, and UNCHECK it.

Raelyn said, on January 31, 2008 6:12 PM:

I have tried everything here to fix this security certificate issue which I have been having for almost a week. Nothing is working. Should I do a system restore or is there a virus or corruption on my computer. I am very frustrated with this. Any help would appreciated.

I recently emailed you saying that I had tried everything and still had the certificate issue so I went to my date and time and checked it a second time. Well I missed it when I checked the first time. Sure enough the date was wrong. It was set to the wrong month making it one year ahead of the actual date. I changed it and no more certificate issues. I thank you so much for this site. It's amazing how my internet provider and computer company didn't even get it and I found the answer to the problem on your site!! Thanks a million. I really appreciate you!!

They referred me to Microsoft, who were no help, then wanted to charge me money... i said no thanks. I then decided to google and found this website, all I had to do was change the date and I was set. WOW! I would have been so upset if I paid Microsoft to tell me to change the date on my PC to fix this problem. You all are awesome! Thanks for alleviating so much stress from me!!!

I had the same problem with the expired certificate issue. Instead of getting upset right away I took a deep breath. Usually this is when I start a series of technical "Hell" days trying to resolve a problem.

Thank you so much for posting this solution. It literally saved me weeks/months of stress.

I would still like to know how the date got changed.
Many, Many, Many, Thanks, Karen.

Lol , Same here. I’m pretty god at fixing computers and I tweaked IE several times to try and get the “security certificate warning “ to go away. Nothing worked! Finally one site said that if your running IE 7 you’ll need to go into tools (top button on IE page)\internet options\advanced (over on the upper right side of the box) once in “advanced? scroll down and check your security boxes.

Anyway that wasn’t my problem either and I thought I had a virus. I was just about to reload MS Windows and then I found this page. My clock was off too. My date was off by 5 Years after I reset c-mos. Thanks You Guys So Much. You certainly have saved me a good deal of what would have been wasted time. Hail Dave!

I had a network configuration that required a cert on the website (in IIS) on the server (a win 2003 box), AND on the firewall. This was specifically for the situation of the website functioning perfectly inside the firewall and not working outside the firewall. In fact, after a cert update, internal was perfect, but people outside kept seeing the old cert. But this page was useful nonetheless. Thanks everyone.

I had the error when I tried to access 3 new web sites for the first time.

I checked my date settings on my computer and found them to be correct.

I went back again and tried to access the sites in new tabs and the sites worked correctly.

Perhaps the server's time was incorrect and it reset the time on first access. Who knows, but now all three sites work and they did not on the first attempt at accessing them.

Stuart, that's a classic example of having a dead battery on your motherboard. There's a tiny watchbattery that's used to retain date/time information on reboot or power down: if it dies, your computer is clueless on boot. Pop open your computer, find it, and replace it. Carefully.

If you open up your computer, you'll see that there's a small watch battery on the circuit board. That's the date backup and if you're finding that you keep having the date and time reset, it's dead and you need to replace it.

Thanks for the heads up on the date and time - worked perfectly.

Just want to add, MSN and GMail checker also do the same thing - check for valid security certificates when the log in or check for mail. Im sure other programs do the same thing. If you get an error code from MSN or anything else regarding invalid security certificates check your date and time. Mine changed iteslf after i may have overclocked a little too much, had to fix the BIOS and set the month & date wrong.

Thanks again! :)

I was not going to post here and say Thanks because of the 100s of other posts already out there. But, can you imagine the 100s of others like me, who have found help here and have not posted?

I had a few too many hardware changes to my pc that Microsoft didn't like it, so I had a Technician get me Microsoft re-certified. And, after all the changes, my BIOS was off, so the tech reset all that for me too. The 2 things he forgot to reset were the date and time!!! So, I went into my BIOS and changed them. What a miracle it is that I found this forum.

I agree with everything said over the years before me - please know that it STILL is helping people.

I haven't a clue why my laptop suddenly choose to go back to 1984 (!) - unless it's some kind of sci-fi conspiracy connected to the fact that it's 2010.

I would like to add however I enjoyed your classic, simple (and also) literary response.

In the 'Adventures of the Creeping Man' Sir Arthur Conan Doyle has Watson say, "If I irritated him by a certain methodical slowness in my mentality, that irritation served only to make his own flame-like intuitions and impressions flash up the more vividly and swiftly. Such was my humble role in our alliance."

I suppose even the best of us can be a little "Watsononian" once in a while....

I recently bought a PC with Win7. I could get on my company's websites, but yesterday I kept getting cert expired, both with IE7 and Firefox. I remembered that the PC just ran an update from Microsoft....lousy updates.
Checking can be disabled, but PLEASE re-enable after you go to your known website----it's for your protection.
In IE, go Tools, Internet OPtions, Advanced. Scroll down to security and uncheck "check for pub cert revocation", and uncheck "chk for server cert revocation."
In Firefox, its Tools, Options, Advanced, Encryption, Validation and uncheck "use online Cert........"
PLEASE turn them back on when finished. Hopefully Microsoft will fix it with another update.

Ron Asselstine said, on July 9, 2010 12:20 PM:

I just fixed a similar problem with a client who claimed that the solutions here did not work for him.
He got the error every time he started Firefox (3.6.6) but did not get the error with IE 8. The date was good and both programs were up-to-date. He could still use Firefox after canceling the message. He used the "Plain Old Favorites" add-on in Firefox in order to access IE's favorites from within Firefox. The error referred to https://access1.sbc.com which is the secured AT&T site.
There, as plain as the nose in front of your face, is the clue, Dr. Watson. I started IE 8 and selected access1.sbc.com from the favorites. While it was displayed, I removed that favorite from the list and restarted Firefox. The error was gone. I put the favorite back in again through IE 8 and the error came back in Firefox. So, I copied the address from IE 8's address bar into Firefox. All of a sudden, Firefox came up with a screen to walk me through storing an updated certificate in Firefox. The problem is now gone.
This may not be the solution for you, but it is not difficult to test. Check your favorites and/or bookmarks for the website listed in the error message. If you find one, delete it then try to access the site directly.
Hope this helps someone.

Elemental my dear watson ! HAHAHA wrong date here too...

FOR ALL HAVING THIS PROBLEM, CHECK INTERNAL BATTERY VOLTAGE (USUALLY 3 VOLTS, BATT TYPE: CR2032 OR SIMILAR) SOMETIMES A SMALL RECHARGABLE BATT IS USED ONLY TO KEEP CLOCK/DATE GOING WHEN YOU TURN OFF THE MACHINE.

OF COURSE WHEN THE VOLTAGE IS LOW... CLOCK AND DATE RESET TO MANUFACTURE DATE/TIME AND YOU BECOME TO GET CRAZY WITH "INVALID CERTIFICATE MESSAGES" AND MANY OTHER DATE RELATED.

THIS ALSO COULD BE CAUSED BY A LINE VOLTAGE FLUCTUATION (BROWNOUT, PEAK, ETC) AND BATT A LITTLE BIT LOW.

THANKS TO ALL !!!

Nothing wrong with my dates. My "Trusted Root" and "Trusted Publisher" and "Trusted Intermediary" certs are all courtesy of Windows Update.

I can delete them as often as I like, or place them the expired in 1999 etc and "Fraudulent Microsoft" ones in the Untrusted store...but they'll all find their way back into my Trusted Root.

I actually think I know how and why. I'm pretty sure it involves something to do with the 40 or 50 "Run Without Permission" ActiveX add-ons in IE8 and 9. On my systems, all set by default to Approve every website in the world.

But keep celebrating your inability to see a permanent clock clicking over in the corners of your screens ;)

After I read it, I remembered that I'd checked the time and date a few days ago to see what day December 15th fell on. Apparently, I clicked the date and saved it. Thank you for saving me hours of time and worry. Much obliged! Kindest regards, Nan

Hi Dave -

My cousin's provider is Frontier. She is unable to get onto the web. Sometimes she gets a message that the security certificate is invalid. No one can seem to locate her problem. Even had a modem change. Can this security certificate thing keep her from getting onto the web? Thank you John S.

Try updating root certificates by going to:

Start > Control Panel > Add Remove Programs

Add/Remove Windows Components
Scroll all the way down.
Check Update Root Certificates.
Next, Finish, Reboot.

Ok this is what it seem to have cause the problem (IN MY CASE).

I used google docs on my android mobile phone.
For some reason my mobile told google that i was in NY, then in CA. And they idiots (google) have now block me out(certification got messed up) whatever. Again this is stupid. All because they trying to monitor users on everything they do, who they are, what browser they use, where they are coming from.

I logged out form my google mobile, and still dont work... The problem only occurs when i log into google docs from my phone.

I can give you 1 tip:
If you want your computer to be safe from malware and heuristic virusses DONT use AVG. That anti-virus doesnt recognise the newest malware/heuristics anymore unless you pay for an advanced version.
Besides that AVG slows down the computer like Norton does since the first 2012 update.
(use Avira or Kaspersky instead to be more satisfied ;))

When I am logged into pinterest (there's an option to log in using your facebook account, but I do not use that option), I receive a pop up box: Safari can't verify the identity of the website "s-static.ak.facebook.com". It has the options: 1)Show cert 2) Cancel 3) Continue. I've tried all 3 but lately have been pressing "cancel" until I load the next page and it pops up again. I use an imac and I'm not even on facebook. Other times "Invalid URl" page comes up and I can't even get to the website at all. This happens with pinterest or facebook mostly. Do you know what it could be?

This problem came up this weekend. Website security certificate. Went to Best Buys and talked to the Geek Squad. Sure enough they had a simple answer. Your computers date and time are off and does not match the certificate date. For me this worked. If it does not work you need to replace a battery in your computer. Cost at Best Buys about $4.00.

The site's security certificate has expired!
You attempted to reach mail.google.com, but the server presented an expired certificate. No information is available to indicate whether that certificate has been compromised since its expiration. This means Google Chrome cannot guarantee that you are communicating with mail.google.com and not an attacker. Your computer's clock is currently set to Thursday, March 30, 2073 11:25:05 AM. Does that look right? If not, you should correct the error and refresh this page.
You cannot proceed because the website operator has requested heightened security for this domain.

Probably going to be linked to a scareware scam so when you get a "Certificates out of date" message take the magnifying glass to the calendar date then run your virus checker.
