I can't get music to play on my Sony PSP?

Ok I am about ready to throw my Sony PSP out the window. i have done everything your directions have said and i cannot get music to play on it. i know it stores it to my memory card because it uses up the memory. i made the music folder and dragged the mp3 files into it but it refuses to play on my PSP. i do not know what else to do. please help me..

Dave's Answer:

This is a distressingly common question here at Ask Dave Taylor so I thought it would be useful to detail exactly how to get music onto your PSP and play it.

Step One: Make MP3 Format Audio Files!

First off, you need to have music in MP3 format (the PSP supports other music formats, but the majority of reports I get are that they either don't work or are quite difficult to set up). If you are ripping your own personal music CDs, you might well find that your music library is in a different audio format (Apple prefers AAC and Windows Media Player prefers WMA format, for example).

Here's how to tweak each of these programs to save your future rips in MP3 format:

MP3 audio CD rips from Apple iTunes
MP3 audio CD rips from Windows Media Player

If you find yourself with music files that are in the wrong format, then you need to use a format translator. Two applications that look like they'd do a good job in this department are Switch (for Windows) and Music Man (for Mac OS X). In fact, you can read a tutorial about Switch here: How to convert WMA audio files into MP3 audio files.

Once you have the files in the correct format, check that they work properly by double-clicking on one of them. Your preferred audio player should launch and, hopefully, you should hear music out of your computer speakers.

Step two: Connect!

Hook up your Sony PSP to your computer via a USB cable. Turn on the PSP and put it in "USB CONNECT" mode (it should display the words "USB CONNECT" on the PSP display during the entire time you're transferring files, and plug it in if you don't have a fully charged battery).

If your computer complains that you are connecting a high-speed USB device on a low-speed USB port, try unplugging it (which is to say, take your PSP out of "USB CONNECT" mode, then unplug the cable from the PSP) and plugging it into a different USB port. Somewhere on your computer you have a higher-speed port, which you should certainly use if you can. If not, or if you can't figure out which port is USB 2.0, then you should be able to safely ignore the warning message and proceed anyway. Once you rehook up your PSP, do make sure you remember to put it back into "USB CONNECT" mode).

Your PC or Mac should just magically show a new removable hard disk on the desktop (or, if needed, go to My Computer to find it). On a Mac it'll probably show up as a device called "Removable Drive", but on a PC it can show up as drive E:, F:, G: or whatever else is the next available drive name on your computer. If it doesn't show up and you're running Windows XP, then you might need to search for the proper driver, which is hopefully an option. If you're running an earlier version of Windows, you're kinda on your own because earlier versions don't support pluggable hard drives. There's an untested Windows98 driver you can download from Interia.pl, but I haven't heard from anyone whether it actually works or not.

Once your PSP shows up on your computer, you should be able to navigate the different directories to find a folder called MUSIC. That's where you want to drag and drop your MP3 files, so do so now, realizing that each music file typically takes up 2-3MB of space, so the default 32MB Memory Stick Duo that came with the Sony PSP is only going to be able to hold about one CD of music before it's full, and that's assuming you don't have any game saves on it. Instead, you might consider buying a bigger Memory Stick: I have a 512MB one that gives me plenty of space and it didn't cost much (Amazon.com, for example, sells this funky green 512MB PSP-compatible Memory Stick for less than $40, with free shipping).

(If you don't have a "MUSIC" folder on your PSP then you might need to have the PSP unit itself reformat the memory stick (rather than your PC) so that all of the folders are setup properly. You can learn how to do this here: reformat your Sony PSP memory stick)

Step Three: Listen!

Once you've copied your music files onto your Sony PSP device, you should be done. Take the PSP out of "USB CONNECT" mode, then unplug the cables, hook up headphones so you can hear the PSP audio, and then go to the MUSIC area on the PSP.

One of the items listed in "MUSIC" is something called Memory Stick. Your songs are in that folder. To get to them, move the highlight bar to "Memory Stick" and press the "X" button:

Sony Playstation Portable (PSP)

You can see the "X button on this photo: it's the lowest of the four buttons on the right side control area.

You should then move into the Memory Stick music area and see all of your MP3 files. Click on one to play it!

Hopefully these detailed instructions will help you avoid tossing your PSP out the window. If not, well, let me know when you'll be tossing it and maybe I can catch it and use it as another test device. :-)

Updated to explain what to do if you don't have a "MUSIC" folder, based on comments added to this article.

All i have got is a couple of file under saved data and a couple under browser.. thats it!! so i was wondering if i need to add a new file or i need to put the music somewhere else??? So please let me know what i shoud do.. PS i have windows xp-pro

Posted by: Ronnie at January 7, 2006 9:29 AM

What you need to do is to have the PSP format your Memory Stick, Ronnie. Be aware that doing so will delete all game saves, photos, music, etc that's on the stick (though I expect you don't have any), but then you'll have all the folders you need to work with it later. Click on "home", then left arrow to the system configuration options, and under "System Settings" one of the options is "Format Memory Stick". That'll do it!

Posted by: pjpike at March 5, 2006 10:52 AM

Hi all. To convert music into MP3 format, please see:

http://www.askdavetaylor.com/about_convert_mp3.html

You can't use MP4 audio files on a PSP either, so you might need to convert them to MP3 format.

JKluger: if you don't give us any additional details, it's basically impossible to try and help you any further... :-)

Dave, I just want to express my thanks.
And to everyone who loads the music onto the memory stick and then can't see it in the PSP, please READ the posts before yours. All the answers are there. You have to format the memory stick, so that the PSP sets up the directories. You can not set them up on your own. (Well, you can, but seeing as you already have problems, you more than likely won't do it right.)

Hey Dave!
Thanks for all the info available. On my PSP I was wondering if I can play music I have loaded onto my memory stick while I am playing a game. Some of the songs with the games are pretty bad.
Thanks!

Posted by: timmy at April 21, 2006 10:27 AM

I really need help. When I try to place music into my "MUSIC" folder in the "PSP" folder i get an error message that says: "Cannot copy file, specify name and path" or something like that. What does it mean?

Posted by: Nick at May 2, 2006 8:20 PM

Actually, Lee, you can. I'm a bit iffy on the details, but there is a program you can download that lets you listen to your own custom soundtrack in GTA: Liberty City Stories. There may be other games it works with, but I'm not so sure. LCS is an amazing game, and having your own songs as a sountrack would be an amazing help, since, well, the songs suck in the actual game. Look it up on Google, you may find something.

does anyone know if you can create folders under the music folder? because I put a couple of cd's worth of MP3's on my 1GB stick, and now they are now even organized to artist? ie x:\PSP|MUSIC\REM would that work????

Posted by: Corey at May 28, 2006 10:49 AM

Out of the box the PSP 32mb stick isn't formated. You are "dead on" with formating the memory stick! I found just what I needed here to make this thing work!

I've read the comments here and i'm still about ready to chuck this one day old PSP out of the office window.

So far:

- I've connected the USB cable fine.
- I've got a new e: drive
- I've saved two jpeg images in that e:drive under a folder i've called 'Photos'
- On the PSP display, under Photo/Memory stick I can see the amount of memory has gone down - so they're on there.
- however i'm told there are "0 images"

WTF?

Please someone save my sanity. I'm around all day on.

ok ok this is very simple you guys are making this like rocket sience or something. ok this is what "I" did to get music on my sony psp. i have "Lime wire" i don't know if any of you guys have it but its a great music sharing place. all the music is free. if you want it go to www.limewire.com and "download" and "get Basic", now install it. ok plug your psp in your PC through a USB cable. and on your psp go to "Settings" and click on "USB connection" your PC should pop up with the action you wanna do. click on the folder file. now, creat a file called "PSP". ok now go in that file, inside that file creat a file called "MUSIC" now go inside that file. ok i hope u have lime wire open and ready to go. download a song and when it's complete drag and drop it into the music file and there you go, you have music on your psp

i am in usb mode
mem stick is formatted

Sometimes if i'm lucky i can get the stick to be recognized as a removeable drive, but when i transfer a file ( a picture file to PSP\PHOTO)
it either stops halfway thru, which gives me a corrupted file on PSP, or it says Path or Filename Does not exist. please give me some advanced help

I read your instructions several times even got my wife to try the instructions...same results.

I dragged and dropped my .MP3 files into the Music folder, unplugged the cables and plugged in my headphones.

I went to the music area and pressed the X button. The PSP reads "The music cannot be played. There are no tracks available."

Of course there is nothing on the Sony troubleshooting site?

I am ready to personally fly to Sony and throw this PSP at them!

The latest system software version for psp supports AAC files ripped from CDs by itunes (not the protected AAC format that you buy from the itunes music store), so no need to reconfigure itunes to rip to mp3 format anymore.

My son has a PSP and we have put music on it. The music will be there - sometimes - but when it is, a song will never play all the way through. We have formated the memory stick - through the PSP and there is plenty of room on it. We are also using MP3 files. Any suggestions??

Posted by: RB at January 14, 2007 8:38 PM

Never mind - I got it working. All this time it was a bad cable. We were using the one that came new with starter kit - therefore I didn't think about it being the cable to start with. It was really flimsy and on a retractable device. I noticed we could sometimes get songs on and sometimes not. Also sometimes the PC would recognize the PSP and sometimes it would not. We found another cable in the house and tried it and the songs went on great.

download the new firmware version 2.6 or late then you can go to system setting then go to enable WMA playback this option willconnect to the internet to enable the wma playback then you should be able to play WMA files on your PSP. copy your mp3 files to psp/music folder. Solucionescompu@aol.com

Hi Dave,
I'm about to pull every hair on my head out. I bought my 11 year old a PSP for Christmas. He loves it, BUT now he wants to download mp3 tunes to it. He is relentless about getting his iTunes (I'm the computer guru, he says--so the pressure is on) transfered onto it. We purchased some songs from iTunes, and didn't know that they would come in anything other than mp3 format. I tried to drag them to the PSP Music folder, and while it looks like it's doing something, when we open up the music folder, it is empty. After reading your tips, I found that the songs are ALL in M4P format. I read your advice, and downloaded SWITCH, but it won't allow me to convert the files to MP3. It comes up with an error and says it can't convert.
I've spent hours trying to figure this out. There has got to be an easier way.
I'm not a computer guru, and I'd really appreciate any help you can give.
Thank you!

Get yourself a 4 gig memorystick, then get the psp media manager software, it converts files for you...or get pspmaxmedia manager from datel- it's easier and free than media manager, and update your firmwire, or get devhook 3.03 firmwire even has visualizers :D, that matches color wit ur existing theme, or random colors :D and 4 or 5 styles :D

I have a problem with playing music on my PSP. All my songs on my computer are in mp3 format. But the problem is, my PSP will only play SOME of the songs a put on it. I'm at a loss as to why it's only playing some MP3's!!

I use Music Match to convert my CDs to MP3s.

All the albums my PSP won't play have a little box for the album cover, and when you click on it it says there arent any tracks. Even though I can play the tracks from my PSP memory stick. And they're all definitly MP3s!!

Can anyone help? It doesn't make any sense as to why it plays some of my MP3s!

Thanks,

Nadia.

My problem is sorted :o)

Three days I've had this problem for and have just stumbled upon a website that had the solution... straight after I sent this post no doubt!

Anyway, the reason some of my albums didn't play was because the songs where within a folder of a folder!

This website shows a diagram of the problem, notice the cross on the folder within a folder of the Music folder.

Once I moved the folder with the actual mp3's in it up to the Music folder, my songs were playing... yay :o) My PSP is brilliant now... I can surf the net, play films, play games, play movies, and even read PDFs.

Nadia.

Oh... I forgot to post the webaddress of the site that helped me, its http://www.us.playstation.com/Support/PSP/Music/s_psp_mu_SA.html

Posted by: Shelia at November 30, 2007 9:49 PM

Help!!!!!!!!!!!! I took my memory stick out of my psp and put it in my computer and put music on the memory stick and put It back into the psp. It said memory space taken, but they is no music on the psp.

Posted by: Shelia at November 30, 2007 9:59 PM

Okay. I figured out why sometimes you can't see the tracks you put on the PSP. You have to save the tracks directly under the Artist's folder. If you put another folder into the artist's folder(for me One-X(Album name)inside three days grace folder) and then the tracks inside of the Album folder then the tracks won't show up. Copy the tracks directly under the Artist's folder.

Hey,
Alright I got the music on my PSP.. Your instructions work great. But now I'm stuck. No it doesn't say corrupted file.

I go to music, and my songs are there and I go to play them and this message comes up
" WMA playback is not enabled.
And I did enable it and it still doesn't work.
All I want to do is play my music. Please help. Thank you

Posted by: Mandy at March 7, 2008 7:28 PM

I was having trouble with this myself, but then I did two things that appeared to make the difference:
1) I had one of those combination power/data cables, so I unplugged the DC power connector (yellow part)
2) I switched off the wireless antenna.

If you're having trouble, maybe try one (or both) of these.

please answer

Posted by: nick at May 3, 2008 1:11 PM

OK. i got it. for all of you who format your mem stick. do the usb connect. accept the WMA playback. if you plug your psp in to your cmp and you use programs to load the music onto your psp. persay windows media player. well what it does it make folders in your music file. well it should work in a sense but for some stupid reason it doesnt read any music in the folder. so the simple fix is to just put the exact file in the music folder. make sure its not under any artist folder or anything. heres a great example of how you should see it. just change (psp) with the removable drive it shows up as
psp:music
for me it shows up as I:music/
just drag the exact file under music and presto it will work. now can somebody figgure out why the heck it wont play any music under an artist folder? cause its stupid as hell
