How do I view the full headers of email in MSN Hotmail?

I like to explore how email gets from one place to another and sometimes make sure that it's really from who I think it's from, so I like to dig into the arcane Received-By: and other headers that are atop an email message I get on MSN Live/Hotmail. Problem is, that's not so easy. How do I view the "full headers" of an e-mail message in MSN Hotmail?

Dave's Answer:

When viewing an e-mail message (in Hotmail, GMail, Microsoft Outlook or anywhere else), the default setting is usually to show only the "simple headers" of the e-mail message -- the "From" address, the subject, the date it was sent, and other familiar details. The "full headers" are the extra information associated with an e-mail message that show where the message originated, and the path that it traveled over the Internet to get to your inbox. This may be important if you want to know the country that a message was sent from, or whether the "From:" address in the message was forged.

From this point forward I'll assume you know what "full headers" are, and why someone might want to view them.

The way to do view full headers in MSN Hotmail is actually a bit counterintuitive: right-click on a message in your inbox, and click "View message source":

hotmail view message source

The reason this may seem counterintuitive is that when using a website or a web-based service, normally the list of options that come up when you right-click on a link, is determined by your web browser (for example, in Internet Explorer, when you right-click on a link, the options say, "Open", "Open in New Window", "Save Target As...", etc.). Hotmail, though, supplies its own list of right-click options when you right-click on a message link. This is what you would normally expect to do in the context of a Windows program running on your computer -- where many options can be accessed by right-clicking -- but it's unusual behavior for a website. I hunted around for quite a while myself looking for a way to view a message source code in Hotmail, and it never occurred to me to right-click the message!

When you right-click "View message source", a new window will open showing the message headers, looking something like this:

hotmail message headers

Simply close this window when you're done viewing the headers.

The latest upgrade(?????) in Windows Hotmail has gone ahead and removed the View Message Source from the right-click context menu in the Inbox!
I have always found that to be a valuable and critical tool in filtering out /previewing potentially risky e-mails without ever having to actually open them.
Why on earth would MS disarm their Hotmail account users in this day and age in the battle against scams/spams/phishing and all other sorts of nefarious exploits!?!?

Another bone of contention I have with this new interface/format:
Deleting Junk Mails have now become a two-step affair.
Previously, all one had to do to eliminate the spam, etc. was a one-click delete.
Now, the deleted Junk gets routed to Trash and only then, after another delete, does it gets wiped.
Not efficient nor is it an improvement, imo!

I really do wish that MS would offer their customers/users the option to revert back to the previous version, if so desired.
(as do Gmail and Yahoo, I believe

Thanks for letting me rant/vent, Dave.

Miss I, you're right, they messed around with the UI on the latest rev of the Windows Live Hotmail UI update. The new instructions on how to get to the message source, with headers, is here:

(or it will be after 8 Aug, when this article is published)

Agree with the hassle trying to remove junk. With respect to the View Message Source, I've never had a problem with this- still got it, and use it frequently.
But....
I STILL want to know WHY in one of their 'upgrades' two or three years ago that they removed the option down at the bottom right of the list of being able to instantly go back three or four pages with a single click (they had page numbers shown) and now I can only do it page by page, working backwards. Plus, if I kept track of what page it was on, I could easily relocate later. I hate forwarding already read mail to myself do that it reappears with the new receipt date. This SUCKS!!!

I have something to say, now that you mention it, but ...
Starbucks coffee cup I do have a lot to say, and questions of my own for that matter, but first I'd like to say thank you for all your efforts on this Web site by buying you a cup of coffee!

I do have a comment, now that you mention it!
