How do I upload YouTube videos longer than 15 minutes?

I've been starting to upload videos of my daughter singing and playing guitar and we've hit a limit of 15 minutes for the entire video on YouTube. But I've seen videos on YouTube that are longer, including a conference talk you gave that's an hour long! What's the secret of being able to post longer videos on YouTube?

Dave's Answer:

That's a great question because I know that I also recently hit that limit when I was uploading some video of my own. The secret is to be a good citizen on YouTube, then they offer you the opportunity to upload longer video content.

Specifically, YouTube explains that all users have the ability to upload videos up to 15 minutes in length, which we know. To get the ability to upload longer videos, you have to meet these criteria:

* Your account is in good standing, as determined by the YouTube Community Guidelines.

* You verify your account with a mobile phone.

* Your account has no worldwide Content ID blocks on any content

In a nutshell, be good, don't upload video content that violates any copyright and don't leave comments on other people's videos that are going to get you red flagged. Not too hard, and if you're not sure how to verify your account with a mobile phone, YouTube has a handy tutorial.

If those conditions are all true -- and you're in a tricky situation if your daughter is recording songs owned by other people without paying the ASCAP or similar fees -- then when you click on the "Upload" link to upload a new video, you should see the following prompt:

increase max youtube video length 1

If you guessed "click on Increase your limit", you'd be right. Click on it.

I do so and find out that I have apparently never actually verified my YouTube account with my mobile device, so it prompts me to do so:

increase max youtube video length 2

Once I've filled in my number, I click "Submit" and here's what shows up on my iPhone:

increase max youtube video length 3

Easy enough, I enter 256109 in the appropriate area on the Web browser:

increase max youtube video length 4

Once I click "Verify" and it ensures that the code is correct, I've been upgraded:

increase max youtube video length 5

You should be able to do the same thing if you meet the criteria listed earlier. Good luck and we'll look forward to your daughter's YouTube videos!
