How do I set a custom background for Google?

Just saw a friend who had a Google home page that looks like Bing, with a big photo as the background instead of the boring, boring plain white background. How do I do that too and change the Google background?

Dave's Answer:

This one is pretty easy, actually, though I don't really know why Google has succumbed to doing something that's such an obvious rip-off of a competitor. I mean, does Google do this in other areas? Not that I can think of, but with its search page, the core of its entire business, now we have a Bing-like clone!

Yeah, I'm guessing you don't really care.

Instead, you just want to know how to make this tweak, right?

I thought so!

Okay, so here's how ya do it. Go to the Google home page and wiggle your cursor around until all the text and options show up:

google set background image 1

See on the bottom left corner where it ingeniously says "Change background image"? Click on it...

google set background image 2

As you can see, there are a ton of different images, including those you can grab from your own computer, those from your Picasa album (Picasa is Google's photo album management system), or even from a large set of photos that are already available.

Click on one and next time you're at the Google home page, well, check it out:

google set background image 3

Pretty darn nice, actually. Take that, Bing!

Do you have you have a GoogleID account for this option to show up?
I'm using Safari on my MacBook, and that option doesn't appear?

I can't believe Google decided to do this, especially on the day I'm using a near as damn it dial up connection on a dongle. One of the great things the search engine page has always had is it's simplicity and quick loading. Don't see the reason for copying Microsoft on this one
