How do I remove a Facebook friend or connection?

Not to sound like I'm becoming antisocial, but a woman who's on my friends list on Facebook turns out to be quite the kind of person I don't like to associate with. Can't say more than that, but I need to "defriend" her (unfriend her?) How do I do that??

Dave's Answer:

Uh oh, sounds like trouble in Facebook paradise to me! :-)

Fortunately, it's remarkably easy to defriend someone on Facebook, just a few mouse clicks. First off, select "Friends" from the top navigational bar:

Facebook navigation menu bar: Friends

Notice here that within the "Friends" area, I've also selected "Friend List". You'll want to do that too.

Now scroll around until you find the profile of the person in question. It'll look approximately like this, though obviously we're not talking about the same person! :-)

Facebook Friend Profile

Note the link on the lower right, "Remove Friend". That's what you want to select. Click on that and you'll get a confirmation dialog box:

Facebook Remove Friend

If you're really sure she should get the proverbial boot, click on "Remove Friend", otherwise click on "Cancel" and they'll never know that they were on the very edge of the abyss. :-)

So then here's my question. Is there any way to "unfriend" someone without them being notified?

My kids tried to sign up on facebook and somehow every time I try to link up with facebook, the sight comes up in Italian. How do I get past this and get an English speaking facebook to come up when I go to facebook.com?

- How do I delete many friends at one time?
- How do I delete a group of friends already in a list? I don't want to delete just the list but all the friends in there

I think the friends management in facebook is very poor

Is there a way to remove my profile on a person list of friends? It has recently came to me attention that this person is married. (news to me and it must be news to his wife) I do not want to be on his list. Is this possible?
Thanks

Posted by: Penny at January 27, 2009 11:36 AM

Can you unfriend a person without them being notified? I don't dislike these people, but I don't want my site cluttered with all their communications with others; I want to just keep a tight circle of friends and family. Many of the people who wanted to be "friends" with me have no interest in me anyway. It's just so distracting every time I go on Facebook.

Posted by: Lormi at March 12, 2009 3:56 PM

General consensus on Twitter is that if you unfriend someone on Facebook that they do *not* get any sort of notification. They'll only notice you've done so if they try to look at your private profile, etc.

How do I get my name out of Facebook?

Posted by: Bernice Rosenthal at August 31, 2009 5:51 PM

Is there a difference between remove connection and removing friend? I clicked the X beside the persons name? does that mean they still have access to my facebook?

Posted by: Tina at September 8, 2009 4:56 AM

I was friending a few people for my mafia wars application, but now when i try to delete them as a friend i dont have the option. Where the "X" is to delete them it only asks if i want to delete my connection with them. I do that and they still show up in my search box when i start spelling a name similar to theres. Its very annoying, help please?

Posted by: eli at October 19, 2009 8:50 PM

I deleted some files and all it seems to have affected are my facebook and mafia wars. I am using a Linux system. Is there anyway to delete facebook from my computer. I am hoping that by doing so I can reload it and it will replace the missing files. PLEASE help!!!!!!

Is there any way to "unfriend" someone without them being notified?

Posted by: help me at January 3, 2010 7:03 PM

For all of the people who asked about de-friending someone without them knowing.

Since I'm just not sure if de-friending someone results in a notification, I recommend you merely hide their status updates. It results in the same thing, you don't see their stuff.

To do so, merely mouse-over someone's status update. A button on the right side of the first line of their update will appear (hide) and, upon clicking that, you'll be prompted to confirm that it's what you want to do.

And the other person has no idea that you've hidden their updates.

Just a thought.

If someone defriends you do they have to request a friendship again in order to have you back on their list? I just got suddenly defriended by 3 of my daughter's in-laws and I'm wondering whether they're suddenly going to reappear on my list without my having to reapprove them.

Posted by: nelson at May 11, 2010 12:29 PM

Yes, unfortunately managing friends and friends list is no longer as easy. Here's the instructions for removing a friend per the Facebook Help Center (located at the bottom right of your facebook page)

If you would like to remove a friend, navigate to the person’s profile and click the "Remove from Friends" link at the bottom of the page. If you select this option, you will be removed from the person's Friends List as well. You will need to repeat the friend confirmation process if you wish to be friends with this person again.

DELEET MY FACEBOOK

Posted by: ASMA UM AMMAR at July 5, 2010 4:11 PM

ASMA, I can't help you. I'm not affiliated with Facebook. But I do have an article on how to delete your Facebook account here on the site: just search for "delete facebook".

Lori, yeah, I'm glad you're seeking more info because it's up to us parents to ensure our kids are safe. Step #1: require that your daughter share her password with you so you can pop in occasionally and ensure that she's only friends with people she knows. #2: Screen her FB friends and talk candidly about those who post inappropriate content.

In terms of knowing previous interaction, there's no log of that sort of thing I'm aware of on Facebook. Sorry.

Vincent, sorry to hear about your cousin's death. Here's an informational page on Facebook that talks about this situation: http://www.facebook.com/help/?faq=13941&ref_query=death Sounds like the request might need to come from his mother or father, btw. Good luck.

Posted by: Dave Taylor at November 8, 2010 3:10 PM

Zoe (backing up a bit), I'd check that your status updates have a default distribution of "friends only". Then if he's not a friend (suggested by you not being able to unfriend him) then he won't see them and won't be able to leave comments.

I accidentally 'like' a comment by someone who isn't my friend. Will he be notified? Furthermore, immediately after that I deactivated my account. Does it ensure that they won't be notified? Please please help me! I feel so embarrass if I see them in school!

Posted by: Apple at June 2, 2011 10:29 AM

Unfortunately he will be notified: the notification is generated as soon as you click the button. Even canceling your account (which seems a bit excessive, if I can say so) won't change that.

I created a second FB account, one for friends and one for the political threads I like to chat on. Problem is that in doing so I've managed to lock myself out of my first account. Then when I tried to add friends to my new account (friends from acct 1), I can't find them (I think FB is blocking me from seeing them.) Any suggestions? I know other people with 2 accts, but I think my mistake was using too much similar info (name, phone #, DOB) and now I can't seem to change that basic info either. I am considering deactivating acct 2 and trying again. I would really like to keep my first account going.
