Can you unfriend a person without them being notified? I don't dislike these people, but I don't want my site cluttered with all their communications with others; I want to just keep a tight circle of friends and family. Many of the people who wanted to be "friends" with me have no interest in me anyway. It's just so distracting every time I go on Facebook.

General consensus on Twitter is that if you unfriend someone on Facebook that they do *not* get any sort of notification. They'll only notice you've done so if they try to look at your private profile, etc.

For all of the people who asked about de-friending someone without them knowing.

Since I'm just not sure if de-friending someone results in a notification, I recommend you merely hide their status updates. It results in the same thing, you don't see their stuff.

To do so, merely mouse-over someone's status update. A button on the right side of the first line of their update will appear (hide) and, upon clicking that, you'll be prompted to confirm that it's what you want to do.

And the other person has no idea that you've hidden their updates.

Hit the "Settings" tab at the top of the page. The Deactivate Account button is at the bottom of the page.

Yes, unfortunately managing friends and friends list is no longer as easy. Here's the instructions for removing a friend per the Facebook Help Center (located at the bottom right of your facebook page)

If you would like to remove a friend, navigate to the person’s profile and click the "Remove from Friends" link at the bottom of the page. If you select this option, you will be removed from the person's Friends List as well. You will need to repeat the friend confirmation process if you wish to be friends with this person again.

How do I delete different list that were created for my friends? Example: my daughters friends, a list was created that says "my crazy step-daughters". How do I go about deleting something like that? Step #1: require that your daughter share her password with you so you can pop in occasionally and ensure that she's only friends with people she knows. #2: Screen her FB friends and talk candidly about those who post inappropriate content.

Zoe (backing up a bit), I'd check that your status updates have a default distribution of "friends only". Then if he's not a friend (suggested by you not being able to unfriend him) then he won't see them and won't be able to leave comments.

Unfortunately he will be notified: the notification is generated as soon as you click the button. Even canceling your account (which seems a bit excessive, if I can say so) won't change that.

I created a second FB account, one for friends and one for the political threads I like to chat on. Problem is that in doing so I've managed to lock myself out of my first account. Then when I tried to add friends to my new account (friends from acct 1), I can't find them (I think FB is blocking me from seeing them.) Any suggestions? I know other people with 2 accts, but I think my mistake was using too much similar info (name, phone #, DOB) and now I can't seem to change that basic info either. I am considering deactivating acct 2 and trying again. I would really like to keep my first account going.

Your instructions to delete a friend seem to no longer be valid. In additions, those listed under Facebook's Help function also do not work. The options aren't available. The unfriend opton is also no longer available when using the app on my iphone.

Please can you advise as a once basic proces now seems impossibl or has a bug.
