How do I quit / resign a meetup group?

I'm a bit fan of meetup.com and am a member of a bunch of groups but I recently decided to unsubscribe from a particular meetup group as it's not for me. But I can't figure out how! Can you show me how to quit a meetup group, Dave?

Dave's Answer:

You're right, now that you point it out. Meetup.com is one of a zillion sites that make it really easy to sign up for things and join groups, but surprisingly difficult to actually resign, quit or unsubscribe. I surmise that it's the result of a lot of designers who conclude that no-one ever would want to unsubscribe from a group, but it might be a more conscious decision to inflate group membership numbers by making it tricky. Then again, I might just be skeptical!

If you've read my parenting blog, you'll know I'm a single dad in addition to someone who spends way too much time playing with geeky tech. As a result, among the many groups I'm in on Meetup.com are some single parenting groups, including one that I wanted to unsubscribe from anyway. Perfect demo, right?

Here's the Meetup.com home page for the group:

Dig around all you want at this point and there's no "unsubscribe" or "resign" or "quit" button or link. Not sure why, but, heck, there isn't a "your group settings" link either.

What there is at this point is a menu item "Members". Move your cursor over it and you'll find two options:

Choose "My Profile" and it shows you how you appear to other group members:

The key is a small text link on the right: "Leave this meetup group". Click on that.

meetup quit resign unsubscribe group 4

Fair enough. It's nice to send a brief note to the group leader so they know why you're quitting. Type in a sentence or two, then click on the "Leave the Group" button. Now you'll get a confirmation query:

meetup quit resign unsubscribe group 5

Done. If you're so inclined, you can get notification of when other groups with similar categorizations are created, by clicking on "Yes, let me know". I signed up for this service, because ya never know what's going to show up...

That's it. You've unsubscribed from a meetup.com group.
