How do I program my Comcast cable remote control?
As a subscriber to Comcast digital cable I gained a goofy little cable box and a big, complicated remote control. I can handle the remote, but would really like to have it control my Sony TV in addition to the cable box. How the heck do I program it?
Y'know, everyone laughed at Steve Wozniak (co-founder of Apple Computer) when he announced that the need for an easily programmed universal remote was one of the next big challenges in the computer industry, with his startup CORE and the CL-9 universal remote, but twenty years later we're still all struggling with these pesky critters. I know that I have six remote controls for my A/V setup, which is really too darn many.
Soon enough I'll have a review of the slick Logitech Harmony USB-based programmable universal remote, but in the meantime the remotes are still stealthily taking over my house! Trust me, I know what you're going through, I share your pain.
The real problem with the Comcast remote is that there is no other brand, it's not like a Sony remote that's relabeled or anything. Fortunately, Google helps again, and it turns out Comcast has a page online about programming the Comcast remote control.
Comcast 3-in-1 remote control
To program the remote to work with your Sony TV, you need to take the following steps:
- Find the code or codes for your TV from Comcast's list [PDF]
- Turn your TV on
- On the remote, press and release the TV key on the very top of the remote.
- Press and hold the Setup key, until the "TV" key flashes twice, then release the "Setup" key.
- Using the number pad, enter in the first 4-digit code found next to your television brand on the chart. If you do this correctly the "TV" key will flash twice. Now it's programmed!
- Now point the remote at your TV and press the Power key. If the TV turns off, you're golden. If not, try again with the next code on the list.
That's all there is to it. With a Sony TV, the codes are: 0000
Note: I had lots of problems with this because it seemed the remote was expecting a five digit value. I finally got it to work with my Sony TV by using the prefix "1" on the code so 10000 finally had things happy.
Try those, hopefully one will work with your particular Sony TV.

I am trying to program my element tv into comcast remote. TV has 3 digit codes about 10 of them.
I tried prefix of 1 and 0 but still would not work. Help!
Adding the digit "1" is the key. Thanks so much.
I can't figure out how to program my zenith inteq tv. I've tried all the codes, even put a 1 and 2 in front. Can anybody please help?
Thanks alot! I finally programmed my Comcast remote to work with my new Sansui tv I purchased almost 4 months ago. I was on the phone with Comcast over 1 hour when I purchased the tv with no luck programming it. I found the code for Sansui on the list... however I had to omit the 1 on the 5 digit code 10463 and just use 0463!
I came to your site and got my comcast 3 way remote to work with my zenith TV. But it only does volume and power...I cant change the channel. I dont have a box, just a direct cable line feed, is that a problem? Thanks
Our Comcast cable comes in through our VCR/DVD combo and then to our VERY old MGA TV. This set-up worked perfectly until we had to add the little digi box to get all of our channels. Now the cable comes in through the digi box, then to the VCR/DVD combo, then to the TV. No problem with the TV, which has all of our channels now, but the VCR/DVD no longer functions with onscreen display, etc. I'm getting either "-----" on the VCR/DVD screen, or something like "7 U -" which, after a few seconds, reverts to "-------". How can I remedy this problem and use the vcr/dvd with the new set-up?
HELP! I just bought an Emerson flat screen tv. I've tried all the codes and steps to set my Comcast remote controler but no luck. No off - on and no volume.
have a sanyo and cable guy came out gave new remote now the channel 4 is in the right hand upper corner and wont go out dont have tv remote anymore so how do i get rid of this, old cable remote this didnt happen but new one it did and cable guy programmed the remote. how can i fix this.
I have a Magnavox model MAG 24Mc4306 dvd/vcr/tv combo, and have had trouble finding the right code for Comcast 3 in 1 remote. The code that finally worked was the Magnavox DVD code 20821. I programmed that code for the TV, and everything works now.
im trying to program my comcast remote to my toshiba tv but i can only turn the volume up and down and turn it on and off...Why cant i switch channels??
sony trinitron turns on and off but no other controls work. this has been noted several times with no response (even from the comcast guys on the list :) ). does the red on/off controller work with the older sony's. also have an olevia lcd that does not respond at all to any of the three listed codes.
To get the remote to control the TV channels (and not just the cable channels), you need to turn off the Channel Control Lock. Instructions should be in the PDF for your remote. For my personal remote:
De-Activating Channel Control
1. On the remote control, press
Cable once. Then press and hold
Setup until the Cable key blinks
twice, then release Setup.
2. Enter 9 - 7 - 3. Press CH- once.
The Cable key will blink four
3. Now, the remote control will
provide TV or cable channel
control capabilities while in the
TV or Cable mode.
THANK GOD for the post about adding the 1! We needed to do that for Samsumg as well! VERY HELPFUL website. Thank you
I have an older sony 50 projection tv and none of the codes on the comcast manual worked. 10000 worked on mine just like the guys mentioned above
10000 worked on my sony
Your advice was perfect. I tried all the codes for my two Sony LCD sets & none worked. The ones suggested by Comcast actually turned the set off but would not turn it on again (can't figure that out). Your suggestion for "10000" works perfectly. Thank yo so very much.
omg. this worked. thanx so much
I have a JVC mastercommander (older) and mine will not respond to the 6 codes mentioned.
Any advice? I am SOOOO frustrated!
Thank you for your good advice on my Sony TV.. It worked with the first shot!!!!
Thanks a lot for all ur comments - I configured my comcast remote (red ok) in 5 mins to work with my sony hdtv (10000) and sony 5 dvd player (20533)
I have a comcast remote exactly as shown on your home site web page. I'd like to be able to remove channels which are not available. Is there a way to do so from this remote? I appreciate your guidance.
Sharon, you can definitely create a custom lineup with the "favorites" option, but you can't axe channels you don't get from the main cable line up (which is stupid, in my opinion). I NEVER use the full lineup listing, I just made a faves list of the 40-50 channels I actually watch and that's all I use. Make sense? Would it be useful for me to post an article about how to create a favorites list?
This was so helpful. The prefix 1 before the four digit code fixed worked well with my oldler comcast remote and my new LG TV. I guess the newer Comcast remotes use 4 digits and the older one use 5.
thanks!!! the 10000 code worked great for my sony tv!
Thank you for taking the time to assist me with my remote question on removing channels. Yes, I'd like to take you up on your offer on how to set up a "favorites" list.
Also, would you know if the remote allows reverse and fast-forwarding of time? I'd like to be able to go back/forward a couple hours of programming.
Thanks again. Sharon
THANK YOU! I tried and searched for hours, but couldn't get my Comcast DVR Remote to work with my JVC TV. I tried putting a "1" in front of the code as suggested here and it works!
Seems like Comcast would get a clue and stop printing their manual asking for a 4 digit code.
Thank you again for posting this. So glad Google helped me find you!
Please help me, my comcast dvr-remote dont work when my lcd tv is on, but it works when tv is off why is that? cannot chage channel or menu when tv is on, only when lcdtv is off its a 42'phillips even if Im 1 feet away nothing
Wow nice site for help......bye now.
I have a Samsung LN52A630 and I cant get my Comcast remote to control the volume or the PIP. It will turn the tv on or off but thats about it.
Thank you!!! I was getting ready to actually call Comcast, but the 1 prefix worked. Thanks again.
I have my TV and DVD programmed to the Comcast universal remote. However, since I only use the DVD sometimes, is there a way to use the "all on" button for just the TV and cable box? And when I want to use the DVD, turn that on separately with the same remote so it also controls play, etc.? Thanks!
Emerson 27" Flat Screen TV, Comcast universal remote code is 10171 ... magic.
No wonder this is the top page when you google for comcast remote codes. Thanks so much the 1 prefix trick is still working. 10000 tuned in well with my Sony KDL 40V2500.
Thanks for the bit about the 1. That wasn't even the comcast guide, but my remote definitely wanted 5 numbers. I was putting a 0 before mine, but to no avail. The one worked like a charm on my small Magnavox. Thanks.
Thanks for your note about the preceding "1" on the code -- I was having the same problem (expecting 5 digits) and the 10000 did the trick!
I have a 52" flat panel Sony Bravia and the code 10000 worked! YAY!!! I'm glad I just happened to come across this website because the codes on the list did not have five digits. :) THANKS FOR THE ADVICE, DAVE!
I have the custom 3 device dvr remote and a brand new RCA 40" lcd hdtv. i've tried every trick posted on this site. I've tried every code i've found for an RCA tv. I've tried doing the search for code trick. Nothing. Can anyone help? I'd really rather not have to deal with Comcast tech support. That'll take years. Thanks.
Thanks. I've been trying to program my remote for a Sony TV for a while now. Including the 1 before the 4 0's was the trick.
I have a magnovox dvd-vhs combo tv and I can not program it to work with my comcast remote. I have entered all the codes they tell you to and it still does not work
Thank you for helping me program my remote. I needed the "1" trick to make it work. This is from someone that can't spell "IT". The Comcast tech Maurice that fixed my cable today also made my day.
I spent a couple of hours trying to get my Comcast DVR 3-device universal remote control to operate my JVC TV. As I was messing with it I noticed that entering a five-digit code made the TV lamp blink twice. I tried prepending a 0, with no luck, then a 1. The 1 worked. Five minutes later I happened upon this page. Thank you for your efforts. I only wish Comcast would hand out a (correct) instruction sheet when they pass out the remotes.
As so many have said, thank you Dave, for the info on how to correctly program the Comcast remote. You Sir, are definitely number "1". ;^)
thanks alot buddy i was going bald trying to figure that remote out.
fyi, you are officially a hero... its so nice not to have to get up and change the volume manually... seriously...bravo, gracias, amazing
All the codes for magnavox seem to create response by my Magnavox MVR700VR VHS/DVD recorder but I can never get it to okay (OK) to provide necessary responses for the set up menu screens.
Is there an actual code for my recorder?
Also are there any codes that might work with the new Digital TV converters for off-air Antenna converter boxes.?
Thanks for the note about using the "1" before the four digit code. That did the trick.
I have a Sony Home Theatre in a box system DAV-HDX266. When I had the comcast dvr 3 remote using four digit codes, code 1903 worked and controlled my device. I recently turned in my dvr box and old remote for a new box and remote. The new remote uses 5 digit codes and there are no codes for Home Theatre in a box systems and none of the codes I tried work. I have added a 0,1,2,3 in front of 1903 and nothing works.
Any ideas? I am considering returning the new remote and requesting an older model with the gray "ok" button but prefer not to go to the trouble if there is a solution.
Put a 1 in front of 0171 per your instruction and the Comcast DVR remote worked for my Sylvania (Funai Mfg.) TV
In answer to Shan's question, yes you CAN set your Comcast box to use one or two digit channel numbers (for channel 2 enter "2", for channel 11, enter "11"), instead of "002", or "011". Don't bother searching for an answer on Comcast.com, you won't find one. They ship the set top boxes with this feature turned off by default. What the?
HOW TO. Go to main Menu and change the "Channel Entry Behavior" in the "Guide Setup" window to "Auto-Tune". Menu > Guide Setup > Channel Entry Behavior: Auto-Tune.
MENU USER MANUAL. For a user manual of the on screen menu controls see http://bit.ly/ComcastMenuGuide
Also see http://bit.ly/AutoTuneOn
SET-TOP USER MANUAL. For a set-top user manual see http://bit.ly/ComcastSettopManuals
It would have been helpful for Comcast to have provided me with printed versions (or at least website links on a card) during the installation. But no, instead they gave me reams of useless paper about other services and left me to do all the legwork for what I really needed.
By the way, the AUX codes require a 2, then the code. ex: VCR Code Panasonic 0035 must be used as 20035.
And likewise, ALL TV codes require a 1 in front.
I still could not get this to work with my Mitsubishi TV. I worked for over an hour to trying all of the codes and various methods including spending about 15 minutes trying to search for a code. I finally did another web search and found a code not listed. The code that worked for my TV was a five digit code...10150.
Hello All. I work at Comcast and came accross this page. Comcast.com has all of the TV codes. the thing to pay attention too is the OK/Select button in the middle of the remote. If its Gray, it only takes four digits. If its red like most, they are five digit codes. go on the website and you will see the 2 different remotes. Thank You and have a great day
Yup, 1000 code worked for our Sony TV. Couldn't get the remote to work until I found your website.
My remote now turns the tv on and off and the buttons that control the sound work as well. I still cannot change to channel and I have an RCA TV and my comcast remote has a grey okay/select button. Please help because this is something that has been causing me alot of frustration.
Hello All, i am unfortunately using a wicked old tv from the 80's/ early 90's a stereo/dbx i sat there trying to figure out the code!!! anyone have any advice for really old tvs that arent listed?!?!!? PLEASE HELP

Nice Site... I have a Sony Projection TV and I can't figure out how to get rid of the TV channel number that is always in the top right hand corner of my screen. Any ideas on how to get this little green 3 to go away? Thank you.
TV code for best buy Insignia 32" tv? trying to program my comcast universal remote.
Wow the thing about adding the one before the code saved me from going insane!!!! I am competent enought but without googling your answer I would NEVER have figured this one out! thanks
had to comment man, thank you so much haha- why isnt this in the damn comcast book?!?
Thanks for your added note. I, too, had noted that it seemed to be waiting for 5 digits and not 4, and had tried 00000 as well as 001111, 011110, etc. Nothing worked. I had not thought to try the 0000 code with a 1 in front. Now it works !!!
"Note: I had lots of problems with this because it seemed the remote was expecting a five digit value. I finally got it to work with my Sony TV by using the prefix "1" on the code so 10000 finally had things happy."
Thank you very much for this thread.
The "1" in front of the TV code and the "2" in front of the AUX code worked like a charm.
Thank you so much Dave. I usually don't have problem with tech stuff cuz I'm kind of a techie myself but the darned remote was giving me so much trouble. All I needed was the 1. THANKS!
tv programed up nice (thanks for that), but now only volume and power works.
No channels will change.
Didn't see anything about this in the posts.
10000 is the lucky number! Thank you!
Tried all codes for my Sylvania tvk131 and none of them work. I made sure I was following directions and it seems that I am. What should I do now?
Oh, I forgot a few things. The TV button would blink twice after I put in the code, but when I pressed the power button the TV would not turn off as you stated.
My Sony WEGA needed a code of 11100 on the Comcast universal remote with the 'red' ok/select button.
That was so helpful. I have a Sony TV and have been trying to program the comcast remote for it for 3 weeks now and couldnt figure it out. I read your post about hitting the 1 and then the code and it worked perfect first try.
Thank you so much for your help. I would have never figured it out with out you.
thanks for the info the especially the five digit tip. My wife will be even happier now.
You've gotta be kidding. All I needed to do was at the "1" to the Phillips TV code, and I got the Comcast Universal Remote to work. What would be so hard for Comcast to revise their PDF with all the codes to indicate this? Maybe...10 seconds of work?
Thank you very much! I never would have figured this out otherwise.
I have a sylvania and I was just about to give up and think this site was fake because I couldn't find ANYTHING to help me with this stupid remote as I was about to give up I thought "Heck" I'll give it another try well I seen where you put the number 1 infront for sony well it also works for sylvania's to! I did it and now mine works after a month of pain in the rear Remotes I can finally have my comcast back without talking to a perfessional :) THANK YOU!!!
My large screen tv went out, so hook up a 20 inch RCA tv , now i am not seeing the channel lineup on screen when i hit info key on comcast remote, any ideas how to get it working.
Thanks Dave. The "magic" 1 worked for my parents' newSamsung too. Merry Christmas!
I seem to have the opposite problem of everyone else. I'm trying to program my new blu-link remote to control my comcast HD box. It works great with everything else (PS3,TV, logitech sound system), but I can't get it to work with the cable box. The blu-link manual lists Comcast codes as 3000 and 3005, but neither seems to work. Any ideas? Thanks.
tom: THANKS!!!! the 1 worked great!
i have a question how do or can i program my comcast remote to my emerson dvd/vcr combo how can i do that if i can thanks
Philips TV = 10054. Wow It worked!! I should have done this years ago.
Anyone know of a code for the Comcast remote to program the Sony Blue Ray Disc Player, model BDP-S360?
Adding the 1 to 0017 for our Zenith did it. Comcast should update their guides!!
The 5 digit code (by adding the "1" preceeding the given code worded for me. I wonder why Comcast did not mention this. For my Philips TV instead of "0054", I plugged in "10054" Voila she works.
In order to get my Kenwood VR-306 working on the AUX I had to prefix the 1313 code with a "3". So it was 31313
I want to disable the power button on the comcast remote so no one can power off the cable box or any other device. We run a daycare and sometimes the kids get the control and turn off the cable box and then it takes hours to get all the guide items back
A Magnavox LCD TV is not working even with the 1 prefix. :(( Please help. I'm using Comcast custom DVR 3 device remote control.
i needed to add a 1 in front of the code to program the remote for the tv and a 2 in front of the code to program the remote for my vcr (through the "aux" key on the remote)
I have a Comcast universal remote that I can't program to my Philips 3600D Receiver, someone please please help!
Hi, I have the older gray button comcast remote. It works with my Samsung tv but I cannot get it to work with my sony active speaker system. The remote accepts the 4 digit codes fine and I tried the code search with no luck. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Hi, I recently replaced my old Comcast hd box with a new Comcast hd box (the small one)and new remote. The old box and remote worked fine but I wanted a box with an hdmi connection. Anyway, after making all the connections and programming the remote to my Sony SXRD Projection TV, the Comcast remote will turn the TV off but it will not turn it on. I tried all three codes in the Comcast list for Sony TV's (11100, 10000, and 11317). The 11137 appears to be the code, but it won't turn the TV on...it just turn it off. Any suggestions? Thanks
Please i need a Panasonic tv remote control code to convert my television from I to BG.
We recently purchased a Samsung plasma tv. We can not get our comcast cable remote to work properly. After using the up and down channel changer, it will stop working from seconds up to minutes. It will not turn off/on or volume control. We have tried all the numbers listed and also used the search and never got a double blink to indicate it had found the proper code. Thank you for any help you can give. Samsung support and Comcast have been useless.
My sanyo TV works when I added 1 to the code. So the code really is a five digits 10154.
I have a LCD RCA tv 40 inch and cant get the comcast universal remote to turn the tv on or off, spoke to comcast they could'nt help, its the one with the red ok/select button, tried all the 5 digit codes and nothing... any ideas?
I was ready to give it up attempting to program my Sylvania BluRay player with the AUX button of my Comcast remote. I finally tried adding the "2" prefix and BINGO. Thanks for the tip!
