How do I identify EXIF camera settings in iPhoto?

Now that I am importing photographs into iPhoto taken by different members of my family, I'd like to be able to see which camera (e.g., which photographer) was responsible for a given picture. I believe that information is stored in the "exif" information, but how do I view that in iPhoto on my Mac?

Dave's Answer:

You're exactly right that one of the cool features of digital photography is that just about every digital camera identifies not just itself but saves all the settings (including date and time) as part of the "extended information" (EXIF) of a photo file. Quite useful, and particularly interesting when you have a number of different photographers who use different gear and different settings.

The problem is, it's not so easy to figure out how to get to that information in iPhoto because iPhoto is more focused on location, date, people in the photo, and so on.

In fact, I really had to stumble around looking at information the first time I tried to dig into the EXIF information in my own iPhoto library...

To start out, when you are looking at a photograph and put the cursor over it, a small "i" pops up:

iphoto photo info icon

When you select a photo, information also shows up on the lower left side of the main iPhoto window:

iphoto photo info left side

That's clearly some of the EXIF info -- date and time -- but it's not what we seek.

Click on the "i" for information and you get:

iphoto photo info geotag

Nope, that's the geolocation info: if your camera can geotag your pictures as you go, that'd be another bit of EXIF information showing up, but it's still not the camera.

So where to go from here?

Turns out that the Photos menu has the answer:

iphoto show extended exif photo info

Choose that and the information shown just goes on and on...

iphoto show extended exif photo info 2

Who knew there was so much information included in each photograph? :-)

Hello Dave,

great explications, very clear as usual!
is there a menu option/script/program/tool/... that would allow to rename the images with this exif data? Some photo printing services print the x.jpg name on the back, would be nice if it could read 20090806_schoolpartykids_001.jpg instead of the default name..

Thank,

Koen from Belgium/Europe

Very interesting idea, Koen. As far as I know there are no tools that let you automatically rename photos in iPhoto based on event or gallery name, date and time taken, etc. But iPhoto does have third-party add-ons so perhaps one of those... ?

I have something to say, now that you mention it, but ...
Starbucks coffee cup I do have a lot to say, and questions of my own for that matter, but first I'd like to say thank you for all your efforts on this Web site by buying you a cup of coffee!

I do have a comment, now that you mention it!
