How can I find songs by lyrics?

I remember a snippet of a song from years and years ago, but have no idea who sang it, what song it was, or even what "genre" of music or era. Can I dig it up with Google or some other tool? The phrase was "wrapped up like a deuce", I think.

Dave's Answer:

This is a splendid job for Google, actually, particularly its ability to search for phrases rather than just collections of words. Let's just jump in and search for the phrase you list, but make sure that we surround it with quotes:

      "wrapped up like a deuce"

Unlike most people with tenuous memories of songs, you remembered the lyrics right, congratulations! The first match is from the site Am I Right?, where they state that this particular lyric from Manfred Mann's song "Blinded by the Light" is commonly misheard (or misremembered) as "wrapped up like a douche". There's also some confusion about whether it's "wrapped up" or "revved up". Since a "deuce" is slang for a particular kind of hot rod (remember the Beach Boys "little deuce coupe"?) the latter makes a bit more sense to me...

We've already found your match, though, the song is Blinded by the Light and it's by Manfred Mann. A bit more digging and you'll find that it was originally written by a far more successful [and talented, but that's just my opinion] musician, Bruce Springsteen, in the early 70's and Manfried Mann recorded their cover version in the mid 70's.

One great place to dig around for music and song information, by the way, is Gracenote.com, where you can find that there are a surprising 350 matches in the database to "blinded by the light" and where I confirmed that indeed "Manfred Mann" was also known as "Manfred Mann's Earth Band". I thought so. :-)

Go back and look at those Google results, though. There's an upload on YouTube of Manfred and his gang playing the song from back in 1976. It's not pretty, but here it is:

The second match back at our original Google search is also quite interesting, it's an article from Cecil Adams for his splendid The Straight Dope column on the lyrics to this very song. In his short piece Cecil explains that Springsteen's original lyrics were "cut loose like a deuce" and that Mann changed it to "wrapped up like a deuce", then he bails and admits he has no idea what any of it means. Uh, okay, Cecil. We'll let you slide on this one.

Finally, if you really can't live without the song, you can Google something like "blinded by the light" free mp3 download and try your luck with the various sites listed. More likely than not, the copy you'd get would be illegal, but then again, if I hadn't done that Google search myself I wouldn't have learned that Electric Light Orchestra (ELO) did a cover of the song too...

Now, for practice, try to figure out which song the lyric "you put the lime in the coconut" comes from, the singer/band, when it was first recorded, how many people have recorded this particular song and, as a bonus, find a link to it as a video on YouTube (and double-bonus if it's a muppet singing the song). Now hold on, don't scroll down to read the answers from other readers first: that's cheating!

Too easy? Here's a tougher one: who was the first woman to record a song with the lyrics "nice work if you can get it", and which of the many recordings by female singers was the most successful by sales or based purely on the popularity of the singer?

Thanks for sharing Dave!

I am trying to find the artist and title of two songs. (1) a song that is relatively current ... kind of techno/electronica/dance ... the main chorus is a female voice, singing "Ooooo la la la la "

Very catchy beat ... heard it somewhere and cant find it.

(2) the song that is on one of the SUV commercials lately that sounds very U2, Cold Play, etc -ish. :) Male voice ... the commerical ends with an ariel view.

So, neither is much to go on but I figured, hey, what the heck?! Maybe you'll know. I've tried googling. No luck.

Thanks!!

Sent me an angel to heal my broken heart from being in love. Cause all i do is cry. God sent me an angel to wipe the tears from my eyes."

Jackie, the name of the song you're referring to is "Live From The Other Side", and the performer is Don McCloskey. One of the mtv.com pages has a list of songs that are used on "The Hills".

thats why i’d rather miss your laugh

but somethings feeling strange
it’s like im missing all your ways
and even all the bad
what can i do
you’ve a new man

i’m thinking maybe youll come running back
and start off where we left off last
hey who said i couldnt dream

Hi, I'm looking for a song and I can't find it anywhere. I only know one line and that is "we all need love" - 'need' and 'love' are sung for a long-ish time with both of them made into 3-syllable words. I'm quite sure it's an 80s song and has a friendly keyboard riff. I'm also pretty sure "We all need love" is not the title. Sorry I don't have more info!! But this is bugging me...! Hope someone can help :)

It's an old popular song... I think it goes like this: I know, I know, I know (.....), I know (......, (.......) I'd do anything for you!

This is a song sang by a girl, she has a very sexy and deep voice, and there's also "oooooooh", which is very long. The "Iknow's" are sang slowly and silently. Please, help! I think that this song was in a film or sth...

And the second song: I can't remember anything besides the words: girly, girly, girly. Or dilly, dilly, dilly. Something like that, theese words were in that song many times. Also, I remember the clip. It was brown :D There was a guy and a girl in it. It's an old song, and a man sings it.

Oh where oh where can my baby be
The Lord took her away from me
She's gone to heaven soI got to be good
So I can see my baby when I leave this world

We were out on a date in my daddy's car
We hadn't driven very far
There in the road straight up ahead
A car was stalled the engine was dead
I couldn't stop so I swerved to the right
I'll never forget the sound that night
The screaming tires the busting glass
The painful scream that I heard last

[Chorus]

WHen I woke up the rain was pouring down
There were people standing all around
Somethign warm flowing through my eyes
But somehow I found my baby that night
I lifted her head she looked at me and said
Hold me darling just a little while
I held her close I kissed her our last kiss
I found the love that I knew i have missed
Well now she's gone even though I hold her tight
I lost my love my life that night

the song is the 'last Kiss' melissa

This song was aired during the 2001-2002 season in Mayish/ Junish .. I remember it because it was aired during the NBA championship series between the Lakers and Sixers. Anyways the song is in the background when a lizard is walking a tree/twig or something it looks like the geico lizard..buts its not...I am pretty its a nokia commercial because I tried finding in the old geico commercials and couldnt find it.

THE SONG:

This song consists of a jazz/pop melody..you can here part of the drums/guitar..good song, sounds like a classic. The words I remember from this song go like this: The chorus is like: " And just keep on.." (singers voice).....(more words)... AHWHOOOOOWHOOOOOO (Some woo-ing involved )thats the reason.... "And just keep on"...
By this time the lizard has jumped of teh twig or soemthing on teh white blank screen and kind of smurks at the camera.

Please if anyone has an idea it would be greatly appreciated ..thats a pretty good description.. LET ME KNOW!!

What is the name of the song: from the late 1970'sung by a woman.

Woman, it's time to stop your dreaming, all your crying and your scheming? will break your heart someday, so woman don't start feeling sad, you can't lose what you never had, so dry your eyes and take it like a woman. Sometimes I feel like crying, sometimes I just don't know, it feels so good when you hold me, but it hurts when you let go. I understand your feelings, but understand mine too, while your heart belongs to someone else, what is mine supposed to do?

One of the lyrics is something like:

"Then, there was this girl who....and came home after school. but, when.. she .... they said she couldn't ... even though she tried sooooo hard! ooh aah oooh aah ooh aaah oooh aaah oooooooohhh.." or " And then there was an accident and ...." The lyrics are probly a little off or intermixed.

I't somewhat repedetive but there are different words each time even though they all sound similar.

As a teen growing up, I found a lot of old 45’s that my family member had collected and grew very attached to one particular song. Now, over 30+ years later, the lyrics are still stuck in my head and when I ask record store owners or DJ's if they know the song, they laugh and say they have never heard of it. Originally I thought it was from Paul Revere and the Raiders had written the song but it was not the case. The lyrics that I remember go like so;
Love is all around from the sky to the ground
There’s enough to go around it can always be found
The best love is found in the home

Get it on, Get it on, Get it on, Get it on
It’s the best love known it’s the best love grown
Whoa, o, o, o, o Love is all around you know.

Well they said we couldn’t do it but we proved it one June
We sent a rocket to the moon
And know were walking in space

Well you can’t tell a lie and expect to get buy
Or the truth will come back bye and bye
And it will slap you in the face
Such a waste to be walking in space
When we can’t walk together down here
Take a hand, shake a hand get to know your fellow man
And ya’ll get together and try to do a little better know you hear.

Now after reading the lyrics, you see why they all laughed at me. I hope you have tremendous luck in your search for this song as can not find it anywhere. It would bring a flood of memories to my family member and I thank you for taking on this quest.

I heard a song recently on a country station that was more like a pop/country cross-over song.It sounded like Ashley Monroe/Sarah Buxton/ Jewel. It was a beautiful song and the only word of the lyrics that I can recall is: "princess". (Don't worry, it is not Taylor Swift's Romeo and Juliet song).

There is a song, a techno song. the intro is rather odd. THere a man on a mic that says something along the lines of "Welcome to the sound room, your dj tonight has a wide rang of songs lined up for you, he has avoided the snack bar, and he is still relatively sober" and a few more things of that sort. then it bursts into some wicked beat, not much for lyrics tho. cant find it for the life of me.

I am looking for the artist who sings a song that I use to listen to back in the 80's. All I can remember is one line of the lyrics that goes like this:
All I want to do is run my fingers through your hair, through your hair...OOOHHHHH through your hair!

Please help me remember the name of this song!

Posted by: Amy Nesmith at December 29, 2009 11:02 AM

Amy, easy one. I Googled "all i want to do is run my fingers through your hair lyrics" and the #1 match is your answer: Loverboy, "It's Your Life". :-)

As a general comment, don't be afraid to do Google searches with lots of words. Even a dozen. Or more!

Re: Last Kiss.
To those who keep saying this is by Melissa. I don't know who she is, but it must be one of many covers. The popular one was from the 60s, by J Frank Wilson and the Cavaliers.

Hi Dave,
I am looking for this 80's song. I don't remember the title or most of the words. I know it was a black group, I remember the phrases.

"Wooooooho tell me that I'm dreaming/ I'm dreaming."
"Wooooah(sthg)..........Believing/ Believing

Girl, ... what I mean ......
I'm dreaming/I'm dreaming"

The above was the male lead vocal there is a female singer that sings a verse that says

"Boy... you know what I mean..."

And I remember the baseline and organ had an incredible solo. I have never heard that baseline being sampled in other songs which is a pity. It is the thumpingest thing I had ever heard.

Posted by: Will Beird at February 24, 2010 5:54 PM

I used to listen to an old song my mother used to play it was back around 1978 when i heard it i remember a bit of the song it goes
"well I guess someday you will run away and find a love with whom youll stay and baby baby youll be happy to, well i want you always to remember that ill always be waiting and ill alwys love you like i do" a female sang it im sure

Posted by: michell hughes at March 6, 2010 11:07 PM

I'm also looking for a song, it sounds like an old hip hop song with very simple lyrics they are:
Come on come on,
Come on come on,
come on come on,
1,2,3,4
ooh la la Sassoon come on come on
ooh la la Sassoon come on come on
ooh la la Sassoon come on come on
1,2,3,4
Let me hear ya Say turn it up, without a doubt
let me hear ya say turn it up, without a doubt
let me hear ya say turn it up, without a doubt
come on
come on
come on...
It just repeats it's self but at the very end the words, And you don't know me yet! are spoken.
Any clues? anyone.....

To Kai,

You wanted details about a song that goes "I see you and my heart just stops. Just one look and I'm with an angel."

The song is called "I.C.U. (And My Heart Just Stops)" by Wes Quave.

It can be found on iTunes on a various-artist album called "Gordon Pogoda Songs from Film & TV". It was featured in the Disney TV show "Kim Possible" (the very first episode) and a few other shows and films as well.

So I was just watching Carson Daily interview Elizabeth Moss tonight and in the background of the interview one of the song that played was this great song circa 1970? Or close to that. I would love to introduce my band to it, but I couldn't hear enough lyrics to make google sense of it. It has a kind of Badfinger, or George Harrison vibe to it. Starts off with this cool seventies riff. Then the lyrics go something like... What I do, ( dan nup, dan nup ) I can't say ( dan nup, dan nup ) But my love blah blah blah every single day. The second verse sounds like, watching you, ( dan nup, dan nup ) Watching me ( dan nup, dan nup ) Blah.... The chorus is something like... I want chu in my life.... By the way the Dan nup's are not words but bouncy beats between the lyrics. Please Help.

hi Dave - I've been searching for a song from either the 70's or early 80's (i think) I have spent forever googling it - coming up with nothing... if anyone can shed any light on it - id be so appreciative. I'm fairly sure a male sings it - words are

verse 1 - There's a man out the back, he has his head buried in a drink
because his lady walked out, and he gave her everything...
he was mad at the world , and then a pretty little thing walked by
he looked up and smiled with a kind of gleam in his eyes..
Ch (i think) - Let the bells all ring, let the fun begin
you look like a winner tonight -keep the champagne cold, cause you never know - you might be a winner tonight.

sometimes you win - sometimes you loose - other times you cant be sure....

you would think with as many words as i vaugly have - id come up with something - but so far - sadly not.

Hi Dave,

I am stuck on this one! It's an old, slow love song, with very
simple lyrics, I think from the 1950's ...

I remember the line "More than a lifetime, more than a dream"
then ... "more than" (something), "more than" (something), "more
than a woman".

I think 'More than a lifetime' is the opening line ..

I haven't clue who sang it, but I would love to know the whole song - I heard it again in a dream recently - honestly I did!

If you can help me track it down I would be really grateful.

Thanks and best regards,

Eve

Then again, seeing as I'm already here...

I'm also looking for the song with the chorus, "I've got a hold on you (can you feel it)"; 90s house music and starts with a rap, "listen up, let me tell you about a girl I met a week ago" goes on to mention something about the River Niger...

Too, the one with the chorus (?) "get a hold of your self" which contains "self comes first then everyone else". Also has the phrase "...in order to achieve peace love and unity". this was early 90s, I believe.

This would really make not my day, my year! thanks so very much for your kind assistance!

Hi, I'm looking for 2 songs, but I haven't been able to find them on google at all.
The first song is a slow song, sung by a girl, I think she kinda sounds like Sherryl crow, but I don't think it's her. I only heard it a few times, a long time ago, like in 2005, so I'm not sure if I have the lyrics completely accurate... but this is how I think it goes. First verse starts out like:
"It's gonna take a lot of medicine, doctor..."
I forget the rest of the first verse until the part right before the chorus, I think it goes like this:
"I need something a little bit stronger
Something last just a little bit longer
Yeah I've tried everything
Chorus:
But your love, (your love, your love) your love,
is going to heal me. (Heal Me)
Second virse I think goes like:
"It's gonna take a lot of prayer, Father
To take away this pain
And that's a whole lot of saving, mister,
You wanna take on me
I need something a little bit steeper,
Something work just a little bit deeper
Yeah, I've tried everything."
And then the Chorus again
And that's all I remember about the song. I'd really appreciate any help with this song.

The second song is also a slow song, also sung by a girl (not the same voice though) and I think this is how it goes, but as with the first one, I'm not completely sure.
"Don't you miss me now?
Do you wonder where I am tonight?
After all that we did wrong
Something about make it right
Chorus:
Baby, won't you come around?
It's been a long time since I held you now
*forget the next line
I'll be waiting for you,
At the lost and Found.
Next verse:
Don't you miss the thrill?
Do the nights keep growing longer still?"
And that's all I remember about that song. I heard it on a show but I can't even remember what the show was... I'd really appreciate any help with this song also.
Thanks for reading.

If anyone can help, I'd love to know the song name or female artist who sang the following song. Circa 1982. I know the tune and can email (if it would help). Here are some lyrics as I can make them out on the tape:
Chorus -
"Play me carl (caro?), play me carl, I wanna hear that song again.
Play me carl, play me carl, I wanna feel the earth move again..."

Verse -
"No one in the world can make me feel like you do. Whenever we're around (?)...ooh, you say the nicest things, and you make me feel like a que-en. then you play me, you play me carl..."

google searching is getting me nowhere. Hoping someone in their 40s who listened to a lot of a.m. radio back in the early 80s can help?

looking for two old songs that i cannot find on any search engine and they go back in the possible 60's or 70's and could be considered soul or rap. i only know a few lyrics though;

smooth type soul[ful]
...if i give you my word that i love you would you believe in me...

rap type and understandable
...boss wants to minimize the staggering cost, you get a day off, a layoff, a letter to stay off and now you don't work no more, that position at the plant you really did need, head of the house five kids to feed...

it's iteresting how well these lyric searches work relative to pop, or rock music, however they all fail miserably where independant 'neo R&B' is concerned, as I know the exact lyrics for a number of songs and am only offered pop alternatives which is becoming really annoying as it suggests that these are the only acceptable and widely listened to forms of music, which is somewhat disrespecting of the forms of music I am trying to source.

I'm looking for one from the 90's. Very popular group.

The artist was a male and the tune used for the song sounded vaguely like the tune from Charly McClain's song Sleeping with the Radio On. Some people have suggested Rod Stewart and Phil Collins, but it is neither of those two. Anyone have any ideas?

Hello there Dave,

I have looked allover the net for this song, so I am really at a loss here.

Its from the movie Vampire's Kiss (with Nicolas Cage and Jennifer Beals).

Towards the end of the movie, Nicolas Cage is making his way thru a club, and he is wearing a pair of fake plastic vampire teeth.

Theres a very dancey 80's song playing in the background and the lyrics are (I think);

"why not come closer, to my hungry lips
if you come closer I feel your finger tips"

Its along the lines of Oingo Boingo, but its not them Im sure.

If you can find this, I will be stunned and forever in your debt!!

Thankyou for your time

Katy x

Hello to everybody(especially Dave),

I've tried for so long to search the name of a song I've recorded once a tape casette many years ago (early 90's). Using the lyrics from the song I've tried so many different type of web search with no luck at all (google, yahoo, etc..)

The funny thing is that I once found it! Boomark the site with the information and totaly forgot that i had it. The computer does not longer exist and I can't recall the song's name.

The song is a dance/house music from maybe late 80's earky 90's and here are some of the lyrics/words from the female artist which sings it

you are setting me on fire by the time we kiss..
you are all that i desire...
lied to...

problem with a web seach is that these words phrases are used in too many songs.

Hey dave, I undestand this site was not first intended for people to post their help request but i tried my best to search for missing song and I found many oldies with keyword searches but this one is getting on my nerves (especially that I found it once and lost it!!!) and I have nothing to lose.

P.S. I can upload to anyone the partial song from the tape cassete. And thanks for anyone helping me.

The song is slow and mainly focuses on his talent to hit the high notes and keep them there for awhile. My dad's been looking for the lyrics and title to a song from the 60's or 70's, he's not sure which. All he can remember is..."my wife and I got 16 kids, finally figured out just what we did now she's taking a little green pill..."
