How to create new screen names on AOL (America Online)?

I need to create a new screen name in AOL but am not sure how to do so. Can you help me out?

First off, let me say that I don't help kids try to circumvent protections that their parents have put in place: if you're a minor and want to foil the protections your folks have created, then you'd be much, much better off just talking with them and asking for permission. There's a reason that they're watching out for you...

Having said that, let's go through the process of creating a new screen name on AOL, because if you have a parental controls screen name, you won't be able to do this anyway, and if you don't, well, then you're legit.

Log in to America Online (AOL) as usual, then choose Account Settings --> Screen Name. (I'm using a Mac for these examples, but the Windows version is almost exactly the same. On the Mac, the Account Settings option is found on the "AOL" menu).

Now you'll see something like this:

Click on the "CREATE a screen name" and you'll promptly be asked if you're creating an account for a child or not:

I'll choose "NO" here, and then get this:

As you can see, you can take one of their suggested screen names, based on pulling bits out of your profile, or you can enter one of your own. If you enter one, be warned that there are a lot of AOL users, so it's not easy to find a screen name that hasn't already been taken!

From this point, the process is pretty self-explanatory, so I won't step through any further. This should get you started in the right direction, though, and good luck to you!

Sorry to say that I think you're stuck forever with your primary screen name, unless you cancel your account and sign up for a new one, but then you'll lose all the other screennames too, I expect. That's why once I signed up, I picked a different screen name and have ignored the primary ever since (and yet it gets tons of spam. Go figure)

AIM is a different beast to AOL itself. Go into the AIM preferences and you should be able to remove some of your alternative screen names and/or change the default name when you connect. Good luck, Dorothy!

Brianna, your account has parental controls set up by the master screen name on the account. I presume that's your Mom or Dad. You'll have to talk with them before you can create a new screen-name on AOL.

Anyway, when i did so it asked me if i would like to set it to the 'master screen name' so I did & i did not know what this meant. In general, I find that the vast -- VAST -- majority of people get an email address and stick with it. I'm surprised you keep changing your email address every year, frankly!

Renee, you can't create a new account for an existing screen name. You can create a new screen name, but accounts are glued quite solidly to screen names, and I've heard from plenty of people who get upset when they create new accounts just to find that the screen name doesn't move with them.

Denise, quite seriously, I'd recommend that you do a clean install of the operating system on the computer. You have no idea of what viruses, spyware, or other junk might be left behind...

Suhyun, picking a good screen name is a massive hassle, no question. I get frustrated when I try to set up something new, but my experience is that if you come up with 3 or more words that you want to string together, it's often available, whereas any one or two word combination is probably long since gone. Person, this is an amusing, yet logical mistake. When AOL says that a screenname isn't available 'at this time' they're really saying that 'someone else has this screenname'. You need to pick a different one, as odds are it'll NEVER free up.

There is a way within AOL that you can convert a screen name into its own account. The best solution I have is for you to call AOL tech support and ask them to help you out. Remember, if you are reticent enough about keeping the service, they'll offer you a $9.99/month subscription plan, rather than the default $22/mo program. Just keep saying "well, I want my own screen name, but AOL is so expensive, I just don't know why I would keep it anyway..." and good luck!

i would like my husband to beable to use my computer but in his own name.my 2sons were able to do it but now i want to do the same for my husband i dont seem to be able to.this is so he can have his own email address and sign into web pages that he wants.this may sound daft but i just cant seem to do it

Dave...ever since aol went FREE, it's been impossible to get the settings page to delete or add screen names! I have been trying for months! "Navigation" constantly cancels it out. It won't load. I was one of those lucky ones paying only $7 a month for AOL and I sure wish I just stayed with THAT! Any idea WHY they won't let you change/delete screen names anymore? Many of the questions I see on this thread are topics that can only be addressed by calling AOL tech support, actually, including Guy's question about switching which screen name is considered the master name. Please call up AOL for this sort of issue!

Also, if you find that you can't add a new screen name it might well be because you have a *free* account rather than a paid account. When AOL switched to offering free accounts, they disabled much of the multi-screenname capability of the original accounts as, I presume, a penalty for you not helping them pay for their fancy offices in Virginia. :-)

this was to be able to check credit card info to verify my age.

Probably not, but you can call AOL tech support and ask them. Remember, though, that if you change your password, they really do act as independent accounts (except you can't both be logged in at the same time). In fact, if the logged in at the same time problem arises, try using the http://www.aol.com/ web-based interface: I believe that sidesteps the issue entirely. Good luck!

To get the screen names page up sign on to AOL hit Ctrl and K at the same time to get the keyword box up then just put in the word names and hit ok it's self explanitory from there.

Apart from toally cancelling my AOL account, is there anyway of permanently deleting old screen names which havent been used for yrs.
AOL warn that when you delete temporarily you may not be able to use that name again but thats not true.

I am wondering if this is a glitch or a new "feature" of AOL. In any event the last few days I have noticed within AOL mail, when you are reading an email if you press the up or down arrows instead of scrolling down the message like it has always done since 1995, it now toggles through messages!!!! Why the hell did they mess with this? You can still toggle messages going left or right arrows, so I don't see why they would need to have the up down arrows do the same thing, when they had a separate function all this time. Now I have to either drag the scroll bar with my pointer and drag down which takes more effort, or use a mouse which is cumbersome on my laptop. I sent them (AOL) a "feedback" but don't expect them to return my comment with actual information to help me. Hoping there was a workaround for this. Thanks.

ps. I thought that since AOL became a free service you couldn't add 5 extra screen names to your primary account like they offered when it was a pay site. That would explain why I am only using my primary account now as they closed the others.

I never set up a security question and to get answers from them you have to "upgrade" your free account to a paid account. What silliness is that?
