How to create new screen names on AOL (America Online)?

Hi,

I'm trying to get rid of my primary screenname (I'm not an AOL member, but I set up an email account with Netscape some years ago and can't get rid of it...). Can you help out?

Sorry to say that I think you're stuck forever with your primary screen name, unless you cancel your account and sign up for a new one, but then you'll lose all the other screennames too, I expect. That's why once I signed up, I picked a different screen name and have ignored the primary ever since (and yet it gets tons of spam. Go figure)

I really want to delete a master screen name as the function that it was intended to represent is no longer a valid one. Why cannot this be done without forcing the creation of a new account? It seems to be an economic decision by AOL.

To sound just a little geeky, I think it's simply because the primary account name is the "database key": delete it and everything else vanishes too.

My niece got on line on my computer and put her user name and password on and did not click save and now she is incarcerated and I dont know what to do, she also did something because I now have a start up error telling me a required DllC60Cmmon file is not there can you help me if not I can understand THANK YOU VERY MUCH, Michelle

AIM is a different beast to AOL itself. Go into the AIM preferences and you should be able to remove some of your alternative screen names and/or change the default name when you connect. Good luck, Dorothy!

i am trying to restore this old screen name, so i went to restore screen names...and it wasn't there...because you cant restore them after 6 months...they go out so other people cna use them...so i emailed it and it said there was no such screen name...somebody else cant have it cause it still ahs my buddy icon...so i tried to make a new screenname out of the old on(same name)...it said it was already in use...so if i cant restore it and nobody else has it what exactly should i do..i kinda need it back...

Brianna, your account has parental controls set up by the master screen name on the account. I presume that's your Mom or Dad. You'll have to talk with them before you can create a new screen-name on AOL.

haha i restored my old screen name i deleted it two years ago...i'm still not sure how i did it...might have to do with that thing with aol dropping all the screen names, ones people were still using, and then restorin them again...i also got back two other past restoring(6 months) screen names...yes!...lookin to get an old screen name back after you deleted it? i guess just sign in like usual with your old password and everything...and voila...

hey dave...i just got the new aol dsl and i cannot for the life of me find any of my old features. where is this mythical "account settings" you speak of? also, i couldn't get onto pogo to play games cuz i didn't have java. i downloaded java and i still can't get on. is it cuz of pop-up blockers? if so, how do i disable them? thanks man!! the account settings thing is important, so if you can only answer one question, that's it. -maria

A few months back i created an AOL screen name for my work requirments. Anyway, when i did so it asked me if i would like to set it to the 'master screen name' so I did & i did not know what this meant. Now I have forgotton my password & because I can't get into that account, when AOL says "would you like us to send you your password in an e-mail" I obviously can't. Do you know any way in which I could switch my new screen name into a master one as I am not receiving important e-mail. Thanks,

My name is Tabitha is the a way of getting all your emails from an account that has just been closed to an account that is just opened to be able to let people know your new address from your old my old account is xxx2006@aol.com and my new one is xxx2007@aol.com

Tabitha, I'm sorry to say that there isn't a way to get your old mail, as far as I know, and redirect people to your new address. In general, I find that the vast -- VAST -- majority of people get an email address and stick with it. I'm surprised you keep changing your email address every year, frankly!

I have aol and aim. For aim I just use my aol screen name. We are getting a new internet provider, but will I still be able to use the same screen name on aim even when we don't have aol anymore? Or will I have to get a new aim screen name?

Sam, the only thing I can think of is to log in to that account on the computer you have currently, then change the password. That should do the trick.

Renee, you can't create a new account for an existing screen name. You can create a new screen name, but accounts are glued quite solidly to screen names, and I've heard from plenty of people who get upset when they create new accounts just to find that the screen name doesn't move with them.

I have an existing AOL Account. I in a rush I created an AIM Screen Name and now want to add that SN to my current AOL account. When I try to add it says that the name is already taken. Denise, quite seriously, I'd recommend that you do a clean install of the operating system on the computer. You have no idea of what viruses, spyware, or other junk might be left behind...

Suhyun, picking a good screen name is a massive hassle, no question. I get frustrated when I try to set up something new, but my experience is that if you come up with 3 or more words that you want to string together, it's often available, whereas any one or two word combination is probably long since gone. Good luck!

Person, this is an amusing, yet logical mistake. When AOL says that a screenname isn't available 'at this time' they're really saying that 'someone else has this screenname'. You need to pick a different one, as odds are it'll NEVER free up.

Hopefully you can help me....I created an AOL account on a computer that is no longer set-up. I just sign on as a guest on other computers. However, I now need to add a screenname to my account and I cannot access my account settings. I have tried aol help but have received none. Why can't you just log in using your master account name and add new screen names that way?

I guess I assumed that because I'm not listed as a user I wouldn't be able to sign in unless it was as a guest. I'll try that though.

Dave, I have a question. The AOL account on my home computer and my work computer, as well as the laptops that my other family members have, is the same account. However, when I delete a screen name and add a new one on my home computer, the change does not take effect on the other computers. The list of AOL SNs to choose from when signing on on my other computers still has my old (deleted) SNs. Is there a way to update the sign-on list on my other computers? Thank you very much.

I have a house in the country with my old computer and I have a new house in town.
The town house I can have AOL DSL, but in the country house it has to be dialup. Do I need two accounts, one for in town and one for in the country?

Granny, I would call and talk with the AOL account folk. I wouldn't be surprised to find out that they have an option where you get both DSL and a dialup for the same account, at a reduced rate.

I'm trying to create a new screen name on AOL 9.0 Optimized, but there is one problem. It asks for a security question, known as an ASQ, but where it says to select a security question, there are no questions, making it impossible to add screen names. My family and I can't figure it out, we've only made one screen name, which is the primary name, but since he has no ASQ, we can't select one for him. Please help.

I am also having the same ASQ problem. I have an Account Security Question set-up (verified by calling aol billing) but if I try to add a screen name for my daughter it says I do not have one and i need to create one. The main problem is there are NO questions in the list to pick from. Tech support is of NO help at all and this has been happening for well over a week. THERE HAD BEEN A PROBLEM WITH ACCESSING (creating and deleting) AOL SCREENNAMES FOR 3 months. THE TECHS have no clue what he prob is. Do you?

1. settings> screen names, comes up blank when done.
2. create screen names under favorite used to work but no more.
3. typing aolscreennames in the browser used to work also but no more.

I have had a LOT of problems lately with my pc crashing, service providers, and a bunch of stuff in between. Now that I had a new hard drive installed I am changing everything around, so I went with aol as my online proveder- well, I have a pogo membership that I am paying for that I opened when I had a different provider, I need to add that name to my aol sign on list but it won't let me- it says sorry that name is already being used. I know this, it's my name! How do I get it set up to where I can log in to aol with that name?

Then i get to a page and i click Create your childs screen name. I click it and then the page comes up. When I follow your instructions I get to the settings main page and when I click on screen names i get a list that say create on it. I click on create and it goes into a page that will not open up. I need my daughter to have her own screen name and i will not work. I have been trying for a week to do this and i am getting upset with aol.

Just keep saying "well, I want my own screen name, but AOL is so expensive, I just don't know why I would keep it anyway..." and good luck!

From what I can gather, I cannot reset Master name. The initial AOL service was set up 7-9 years ago, by either my wife, or an unknown installer while I was overseas. I cannot respod to AOL's Master Name or AQCs, on either their 888-265-8003#, or on line account service.

you have to have a paid account with aol to add or delete screen names...i just called them. you can't do it with the free account...i guess i will just stay with what we have for now.. i don't want to go back to paying

I too am having screen name issues....or more specifically trying to set up a NEW AOL account with an existing screen name. My children are all grown and out of the house now and would like their own account. However, they don't want to change their screen name. I go to keywork screen name, click on get started with free email, then click "already a member, click here" and when I fill out the form and request the current screen name it says "screen name already in use". Is there a way to get around this!!!!!

Dave...ever since aol went FREE, it's been impossible to get the settings page to delete or add screen names! I have been trying for months! "Navigation" constantly cancels it out. It won't load. So you cannot do anything with screen names. Whatever you have or don't have, you are stuck with. Ever since aol went free, their service has become terrible. I was one of those lucky ones paying only $7 a month for AOL and I sure wish I just stayed with THAT! Any idea WHY they won't let you change/delete screen names anymore? You cannot contact a tech if you have a free account. Besides, they tell you how to delete a screen name but no solution for the fact that you can't get the settings page up! Benn there, done that with trying to change password before it went free. Any help would be appreciated. Yvonne

Many of the questions I see on this thread are topics that can only be addressed by calling AOL tech support, actually, including Guy's question about switching which screen name is considered the master name. Please call up AOL for this sort of issue!

Also, if you find that you can't add a new screen name it might well be because you have a *free* account rather than a paid account. When AOL switched to offering free accounts, they disabled much of the multi-screenname capability of the original accounts as, I presume, a penalty for you not helping them pay for their fancy offices in Virginia. :-)

I was able to access the add/remove screen names this past week.
I have free AOL using my own dsl.
I was charged 1.00 which I think they stated I would not be actually paying 1.00.
this was to be able to check credit card info to verify my age.
Could not access this area before.
I added a screen name to see if it would work and it did.
I was able to remove a screen name also if I chose to.

I want to create a new screen name, but the boxes way above don't work. I want the new screen name for when I visit the Gay and Lesbian boards. It's one I used in 1993.

Probably not, but you can call AOL tech support and ask them. Remember, though, that if you change your password, they really do act as independent accounts (except you can't both be logged in at the same time). In fact, if the logged in at the same time problem arises, try using the http://www.aol.com/ web-based interface: I believe that sidesteps the issue entirely. Good luck!

i wanna use a different screen name besides my account name how do i do this when i go to settings it only shows we have these 3 new offers for aol users and none of them pertain to what i need help please asp

I have aol 9.0. For some reason i am not able to create any new screen names. I keep getting a screen that offers me stuff that i dont want. Then off to the side it tells me to enter my screen name and password.Once I do that the same screen pops up again and again. What do I do?

I have a mac and I created a screen name on this and one I have had for years now. But now I cannot seem to create a new one why? The report I get is that I cannot create a screen name on my mac OS X Version 10.3.9 I have AOL for MAC OS X Version 10.2.1.
How can I create new screen names?

can't get into aol messenger

it keeps saying to put the billing information then i do and it goes back to the main page and it repeats this process

on aol, can two people be on line at the same time until one screen name.....i.e. primary...virtualart, and then another screen name listed under that primary.

when I sign in -not an aol member- but to my aol mail -all screen names appear-I do not want to see them or anyone else--just want to sign on one at a tome--but they have same first initial and all pop up at once when I press 1st initial --how do I stop this from happening in at sign up screen please?

I get so tired of getting the run around on AOL that I think I will try MSN.Com as I am so tired of trying to change my screen name and I only get a bunch of dung and have to fight to find what I want to do for three hours and then its a hard time I get after I find what I want. I am trying in vain to add a screen name to my AOL.Following the sequence AOL-ACCOUNT SETTINGS-SCREEN NAME I do not get the nice webpage you show but the inane message:"Oops, we can't find the webpage you are looking for." Please help me when you can. I am using AOL for MAC OSX.

By the way, I am not a kid circumventing paternal protection but an octagtenarian.

To get the screen names page up sign on to AOL hit Ctrl and K at the same time to get the keyword box up then just put in the word names and hit ok it's self explanitory from there.

I have an existing AOL Account. I in a rush I created an AIM Screen Name and now want to add that SN to my current AOL account. When I try to add it says that the name is already taken. When I go the other route to "use existing AIM SN" it asks for cc information like I am creating another account. HELP ME!!

Hi...We have just changed ISP to ATT, so now use Internet Explorer to get our AOL Homepage..How do we switch between the two screen names (long established) without signing one out to sign the other in. Apart from toally cancelling my AOL account, is there anyway of permanently deleting old screen names which havent been used for yrs.
AOL warn that when you delete temporarily you may not be able to use that name again but thats not true.

Dear Dave, My mother had her own aol account. Her screen name is Dcdee321@aol.com. However, she moved in with me and is currently using my computer. When trying to log on to AOL, she can only use the Guest to sign in. I have tried to add her screen name as an addition to mine, however I get the message that that screen name is in use! It is! with my mother! Why or how can I get her screen name in writing? Get what I mean?
