How do I create my own Google Profile?

I've read about "Google Profiles" and am definitely interested in figuring out how to set up my own profile. I'm still not entirely sure why I'd bother, but can you at least tell me where I'd set one up within the Google empire?

Dave's Answer:

I'm sure that there are a number of ways you can set up your Google Profile, but the path I have explored is through Google Reader. (Google Reader, by the way, is a very nice RSS reader and what I use to keep on top of the over 100 different RSS feeds I track. And you can easily subscribe to AskDaveTaylor via Google Reader too. Just click here to begin!)

Within Google Reader, click on Settings in the top right. Now you'll see a variety of tabbed options:

Google Reader: Settings: Preferences

Click on the Friends tab, and you'll see something like:

Google Reader: Settings: Friends

Click on "Edit my profile" in the little white box, and:

Google Reader: Google Profile: Create

Now you can enter your name, occupation, location, and commentary. Most interestingly, you can add a link to your blog or profile. Better yet, you can add two or three and have yet another path for visitors to wind their way from the public web to your own site or sites.

As to where people would actually see your Google profile, that's subtle: it's a pop-up window that appears within Google apps when your name or address is shown. For example, in Gmail, it'd be the pop-up window associated with a recipient. (Since no-one seems to actually have set up a profile yet, however, I can't demonstrate it as of yet. I'll try to add a picture in a few weeks as this gets a bit more popular).
