How do I change my Hotmail security questions?

Hi, my daughter knows my security questions on Hotmail Live so she able to access my password every time I change it. This is really annoying and I need help with changing my security questions.

Dave's Answer:

That's an interesting problem because you're right, just about any security question you could come up with is probably going to have an answer that your child will know because you're going to talk about your childhood with them. Crazy kids. I have the same problem with my kids, though I don't know that they know the name of my favorite grade school teacher. Or do they?

In any case, Microsoft Live -- what they now call Hotmail -- or is it "Hotmail Live"? I can't keep track -- makes it surprisingly hard to change your password or security questions, and worse, there are only a half-dozen possible security questions available so you can't just pick one that's easy for you to remember, like your phone number from when you were in high school, but incredibly hard for anyone else to ever find out (or your kids to learn).

Let me show you how to change your Hotmail security questions and you'll see what I mean about it being tricky to find.

First off, log in to your account. If you've forgotten your password, ask your daughter. Kidding. Sort of. :-)

Now on the top right, look for your name to be listed:

You can't click on "profile" here, however, because that won't take you to the right place. Instead, click on your name and a menu pops up:

The choice is here: Account. Choose that and you'll be in the right place. Scroll down to find the "Account security" area:

At this point, click on "Manage" to the right of "Security Info".

Now pay attention to what's shown. Here the question I've set was "favorite pet's name", as you can see:

When I try to change it, by clicking on "Change", a menu of preset questions are shown:

Click on it and you'll see the entire set of questions that Microsoft lets you choose from:

What's missing? That "favorite pet's name" question. Very weird. So if you can find a question out of this very short list that isn't something your daughter also knows, you're good to go. If not, um, not sure what you can do other than change your answer to one that is false and just make sure you remember it.

Good luck!
