How do I change my Facebook group name?

I have a popular group page on Facebook that I manage and as it's become more busy, the original name doesn't really describe it any more. Is there any way to change my Facebook group name or am I stuck?

Dave's Answer:

Facebook is actually becoming more flexible as time passes, rather surprisingly. I think the only thing you definitely can't change, the only thing that's just locked into place once you choose it, is a shortened URL shortcut. So when I picked the shortened URL for the Ask Dave Taylor fan page -- fb.com/askdavetaylor -- it was basically carved into stone.

Fortunately the group name isn't in that small category of permanent names, and it's not entirely obvious how to change it, but it can be done.

That's why you're here, right?! :-)

To start, go to your group page on Facebook but don't click on "Edit Settings" because it ain't what you want. Instead look down the right side of the page. About a third of the way down you'll see these options:

facebook change group name 1

Click on "Edit Group" and you'll see a ton of different options that you can modify, most importantly the group name:

facebook change group name 2

Let's zoom in a bit on that so you can see what it looks like:

To change your Facebook group name, simply click in the text box that has the current name and use DELETE, arrows and similar to change the name to one that's more appropriate. For this demonstration, I changed the group name from "Front Range Blogger Meetup: The Facebook Group" to just "Front Range Blogger Meetup".

When you've set it properly, click on "Save" at the bottom of the window and...

Done. Not too hard once you know where to click.

Confusingly, though, the page that includes the notification of the change being accepted still has the old name displayed:

facebook change group name 5

No worries. That's just a caching problem: click on "Back to Group" and we see the proper name:

facebook change group name 6

Now we're done and it's confirmed.

I should mention that everyone in the group will see an update notification that the name has been changed, but I can't imagine that's an issue:

facebook change group name 7

Good luck with your own Facebook group name change!

I am not able to change the name of my group - it has 1500+ members but was just created yesterday. I am an admin that was added after it was created but I don't think FB keeps track of things like that and the creator wasn't able to change it either.

Any insight you can give is VERY appreciated!

I found the page, but I don't have an option to change the name, only the type of group by symbol. Are there restrictions, or has FB changed the option since this was written? If it matters, my group has 1300+ members.

Eh, I guess we have WAY too many over 3700 members. I tried too, won't let you. Guess it's probably because that sort of number is too large to send out notifications of the change. Makes sense but damn what a pia.

my group has only 727 members, but I am not given the option of changing the group name either. And I really need to!

Starbucks coffee cup I do have a lot to say, and questions of my own for that matter, but first I'd like to say thank you for all your efforts on this Web site by buying you a cup of coffee!

I do have a comment, now that you mention it!
