How do I change my Facebook password?

It's not that I'm paranoid, but I am worried that my roommate might have figured out my Facebook password and I want to change it ASAP. How do I change my Facebook password?

Dave's Answer:

No reason to feel paranoid. In fact, it's a good practice to change your passwords with regularity and, heck, I know that if I'm getting lazy I can end up with the same password for all of my dozens of different accounts, which is about as bad as security can be because if one is compromised, then they all are. Not good.

Of course, you know not to write passwords down, right? A good reason to come up with a strategy for creating passwords that are both secure, unguessable, and easily remembered. A standard trick is to think of a sentence and then use the first letter of each word in the sentence, like "my girlfriend is hot hot hot!", which becomes "mgihhh!" Not a great password (needs at least a digit or two) but it's a lot better than "maria"!

Another strategy you can use is to replace vowels with digits, so the above might have the 'i' replaced with a '1', becoming "mg1hhh!". Better. Now, make the first letter capitalized and you've got a pretty decent password that's easy for you to remember, but just about impossible to guess: Mg1hhh! (or, even better: Mg1h3!. Get it?)

Okay, so now that you have a great new password in mind, how do you actually change it on Facebook?

Look on the top right and you'll see:

facebook settings account settings menu

Click on 'Account Settings', as I show, and in the middle of a lot of other options, you'll see:

facebook settings account password

That's it! Now, click on "change" and you'll see this suddenly appear:

facebook settings account password change

Enter your old password (to ensure someone else doesn't change your password while you're going to the bathroom or otherwise distracted!) and your new, super-secure password, twice. Click on "Change Password" and...

facebook settings account password changed

Score! Done! Now, about that roommate situation...

I'd also like to let you know that I have quite a bit of Facebook help here on the site and that I also have an Ask Dave Taylor Facebook Fan Page that I invite you to join.

Easy does it, Donald. We're not Facebook nor can we alter or change your account. Take a deep breath, then let's see if we can figure out how to fix things...
