I get all sorts of idiotic comments on my MySpace account and am wondering if there’s a way to tweak things so that comments have to be approved before they show up on my account?
You’re in luck, because there is indeed a way to do that and I changed my MySpace account to have this configuration so long ago that I need to do a bit of homework to figure out just how to do it with the new design!
I will say in advance that it’s a life-saver and that I feel like I have one of the least spammy, least overrun profiles in the entire MySpace universe. Not from lack of trying by the spammers, I’ll note, but just by dint of the fact that if a comment isn’t either plain text or from someone I know, I simply delete it without it every showing up for public viewing.
Let me show you how to configure your MySpace account to require comments be approved, then how to actually approve or reject them.
To get to the configuration setting, click on My Account on the top right, then on the Spam tab on the main account option set. You’ll end up looking at this:
but you need to scroll down just a bit further…
As you can see, I have checked “Require approval before comments are posted”, but you might want to experiment with some of the other settings too. If not, no worries, check this one then click on “Save All Changes” and you’re done.
Now, when someone submits a comment, it goes into a queue for you to approve. Comments left for approval look like this:
or, if it’s a comment that includes HTML (which is 99% of the spam you’re likely to get in my experience):
For each comment, you can click on “Approve”, “Deny” or “Spam”. Depending on which you do, you’ll get one of these:
That’s all there is to it. You have successfully wrested control of your MySpace comments area. Congratulations!
