How do I write files to a CDROM in Windows 98?

Dave, I would like to know how to copy computer files to a compact disc. I am using windows 98. I know how to backup files but want the info on a cdrom.

Dave's Answer:

To begin you'll need a CD-RW and a CD burning program. There are plenty of burning programs on the market including Nero, RecordNow, Ashampoo Burning Studio and SwiftDisc Burning Wizard.

Most of the programs offer free trials so you can try the program before you buy to see which one you like best. Once you have the program installed you'll need to open it then follow the instructions which differ from program to program.

Here's the basic procedure:

  1. Insert a Blank CD in the drive
  2. Open the CD burning program
  3. Choose the type of CD you want to create - for example data
  4. Select the files you want to copy
  5. Burn or Copy the CD

Of course, if you're talking about strictly programs and information, a good CD burning program will integrate with Windows Explorer like this:

  1. Open up Windows Explorer and navigate to your CD drive
  2. Open a second copy and navigate to the files you want to copy or move
  3. Drag the files from where they are to the CD folder
  4. Operation complete

Finally, if these haven't made your head swim, my colleagues recommend the freeware application recommend DeepBurner for basic CD backups.

Thanks to Mya Leigh and M. Trimble for their assistance on this question.

Further suggestions:
1. Ensure you have at least 1 Gb. of free space on your hard disk drive. Several Gb. is much better.
2. Ensure you have at least 128Mb. RAM (for WIN98).
3. Ensure there aren't too many programs running in the background - check the systen tray icons in the lower right corner.
4. Ensure your system is ABSOLUTELY clean of viruses and/or spyware. If not, there is a good chance they'll be copied to the CD along with your data.
Deepburner works exceedingly well, especially with CD-RW disks (disks that can be erased and re-used).
