How do I sort my Favorites in MS Internet Explorer?

I have about 4,000 sites bookmarked and arranged into folders etc. The problem is that I want them arranged alphabetically.

I can arrange them any way I like in Windows Explorer, but that arrangement does not affect them when I click on the "Favourites" in IE. I think they did it automatically in 5.5, but it is really cheesing me off having to keep dragging them manually into alphabetic order.

Dave's Answer:

You'll be delighted to hear that there is a fast shortcut to accomplish this task, a way that you can very easily sort your Favorites in Internet Explorer, though who-ever came up with it really needs to go back to the drawing board and read up on "usability" and "consistent interface behavior".

Here's the trick: click on the Favorites menu:

MS Internet Explorer (MSIE) Favorites

Now, and here's the weird part, right click on one of the Favorites menu items:

MS Internet Explorer (MSIE) Favorites

See that bottom choice? Choose Sort by Name and voila!

MS Internet Explorer (MSIE) Favorites

That's how ya do it. You can also do this within individual folders (I hope you don't have 4000 bookmarks in one massively long list!!) and solve your challenge.

Hope that helps you out!

Hi,
Your tip to sort my IE favourites did not work for me.
Pity
Thanks for trying
Frank

Maybe you can elaborate as to how it's not working? Just saying that it didn't work for you doesn't do much for us to help you. Did you not have that option? Did you have that option, but it just didn't do anything?

I can't see any reason why it wouldn't work, that's the way it's suppose to be done.

How do I sort my Favorites in MS Internet Explorer #7?

Posted by: Bill Slaugenhop at November 22, 2006 3:57 PM

I know how to alphabetize my Favorites...my LINKS list of Favorites is in alpha order. My problem is the DROPDOWN list of Favorites that appears when I add a new Favorite, i.e., the list that appears in the middle of the screen when I hit "Create in." I get all my folders and subfolders but in a totally random order...so I have to virtually read the name of every folder to find the one I want to add into. Know how to fix THAT in IE7? Thanks much.

How can I stop the "Add Favorites" dialog from totally expanding every favorites folder???

It takes forever to scroll down through all the ones I don't want expnd just to find the one I do.

Who's bright idea was it to change this? In IE6 and previous, you could scroll the collapsed list and then expand just where you wanted to to add the new item.

The tip about alphebetizing favorites was a gem! I have just begun building a new favorites menu after erasing them all. Your tip really did the trick. Thank you

why would anyone want their favourites in alphabetical order?....surely it adds to the searching time to go trawling through the entire list?

How do you convert your favourites back from 'sorted by name' to the order in which you saved them?

Posted by: jj@hotmail.com at July 29, 2007 3:46 AM

JJ - If you go to Organize Favorites dialog box, select the item and use Alt-UpArrow or Alt-DownArrow to move the selected item up or down in the list.....

Posted by: Mike at September 11, 2007 6:37 PM

Thanks JJ but that does not put the list back into chronological order. I too have a lot of items in my faves list and it would take an eternity to sort them manually one at a time like that. And that's assuming I know exactly when each one was saved, which I don’t.

Does anyone know of a way that favorites can be sorted chronologically, by the date upon which they were saved to the list?

Many thanks,

Tony

Dave,
How do I save email messages to a CD?

Thank you

I have about 50 subfolders, so every time I add a favorite to a subfolder I have to resort that subfolder.
Is there any way to resort all subfolders at one time; rather than having to resort each subfolder individually>

Here is a clumsy workaround I posted on a MS workgroup today titled "Favorites Add To Menu Order". I doubt MS will ever fix this and add any more useability to XP:

While trying to thwart FAT32 IE7 Add Favorites Menu into displaying in alpha sort-order, I moved Favs folders to another partition then back again. It did re-order the Add Favs Menu to alpha except for one folder which shows at top of Menu.

DOS DIR of the copied-to partition shows dirs: [TEMP, 2-45 in alpha, SYNC, TASK, TECH]. Perhaps because of disk space contiguity ?

DOS DIR of Favs now shows [TECH, 2-45 alpha, SYNC, TASK, TEMP]. Note the 1st & last file mis-order.

Why is an XP-IE7 Menu List dependent on FAT order - or anything but alpha sort and why can't MS fix this??? It is a royal pain to manually scan thru a heirarchy of unordered folders to add Webpage shortcuts!! Can someone please present this in a place most prominently visible to MS designer/debuggers ??

hi your idea of right click on favourites and then sort by name worked for me and thanks a lot

Posted by: sns at April 28, 2008 8:12 AM

My favorites list has been driving me crazy for some time, but not any more. Thank you!

I have the same question as TonyO. Has anyone found a way to sort them by date instead of name for IE?

Posted by: Gino at August 9, 2008 10:46 PM

Until a few days ago my favorites were sorted by date. Suddenly the were irritantly sorted alfabetically which I don't want. Does anyone know how to reverse this. I have not been able to find a solution on the internet
