I was hacked sunday-whoever it was got my yahoo password and changed it-my computer was rebooted remotely-I believe it was the same person because there was no power outage and I leave the machine on.
Anyway I contacted Yahoo account security because I also do not remember the last zip code I used...They say they will get back to me within 48 hours-I hope this is true as I also hope to get back into yahoo since I did not archive anything. bummer.

Hi, I had a similar problem. I was tricked by the fake URL and got my yahoo ID hijacked. My 2 mails to the help desk got automated replies and was of no help as the personal details had been changed by the hacker.
As a final resort I called Yahoo Inc at 001-408-349-1572. The Number has since changed to 001-866-562-7219. the computerised reply asks you to click 1 for accounts 2 for information. Click 2
then again a list of selections will be asked.,select 'password'. later you will be put on a real customer service person.
He will ask you - date of birth, approx date when the account was hacked, approx what was the last mail you accessed or some idea about some mails that you accessed last like sender's name etc., and then the secret question.
If you are able to answer these things you will be asked to name the alternate email ID which you have mentioned in your yahoo account or the alternate email ID to which they will send the new password.
My yahoo account was hacked on 14th Aug. and I got it back intact on 01st sep.
Please try it as I have mentioned above and I am sure you would get your yahoo account back. good luck.

dob, zipcode, and secret answer,
i dont know the secret answer so they cannot reset my password, but i have provided the rest of the information correct.

i got email yesterday on my alternate email saying that my password changed. it also records the ipaddress which is in email. (41.204.45.90 )

I am in the same boat as alot here. My Yahoo email account was hijacked March 10 along with my ebay account. I had no problem with Ebay but Yahoo is absolutely the most useless company I have ever seen. Whomever hijacked my email account changed not only the password but also the answer to the secret question. I tried explaining to Yahoo that I use that security question "What's your Mothers maiden name" all the time and know the answer like the back of my hand. I have a problem with my yahoo account. I used to have an account tranvinhdu_2000@yahoo.com and used it for almost 5 years. I changed my password quite often as a security measure. However, in November 2005, I changed the password but something happened and I can never log in my account again since then. I contacted yahoo but they refused to help. I had to abandon it and use a new one (dutran_ut@yahoo.com) which is a paid account.

Since the incident, I lost many old friends and I still really love to have their contacts back. I would appreciate your help if you could please recover the password for me. As long as you logged in the account with the recovered password, you will see what I am saying here is honest.

Mayank, I can only say the same thing I've been saying here for quite a long time: since there's no way to confirm that you are who you say you are, it's impossible for companies like Yahoo to restore account access via email or telephone. If they can't do it, third parties can't do it either. Though they can certainly ask you for your information and try to scam you...

i wrote that comment thinking that u mite b knowing a way to get my id back.... and then you can always ask me personal details regarding my account which i am sure no one knows other than me... information like :

2: contacts list people
3:mailing lists/friends/forums from whom I regularly receive mails
dont u think this information is enough to prove the authenticity..

OK, I'm losing it here! I've called customer support a dozen times I've tried so many variations of my secret answer that I can't even count them. I have all my info correct, but they keep saying mt secret answer is incorrect. I changed my password one evening recently. It worked when I went to bed. In the morning I got up and my home page MSN was completely different! The page looked NOTHING like it usually does. When I typed in the correct url www.msn.com it went to the real page. When I tried to get into my yahoo email account my new password wouldn't work.

I knew all my info including my secret question and answer, but it says it's incorrect! I've given them a ton of info. (Nothing that could help them do me harm, but details concerning my secret answer that would prove that if it's just a matter of it being case sensitive (which they are) or if it was one word, or two or three words that describe the same circumstances) it would be obvious it was the correct answer.

They still won't let me in.

I've had that email for a LONG time. I have product registrations, email addresses, purchase info in there in folders, receipts for purchases...all kinds of stuff I NEED!

I found a way around the problem of the Yahoo password. Many of these people have it stored and retrieval is easy. If they use Firefox there is a tools button on the top of the bar. Then press Options, then passwords tab. It is easy from there and it will tell how to show all stored passwords on the screen.

No-one has received a response from me, Maq, because I am not able - or willing - to recover your lost password for you. That's the point of my original article, is that the people who claim to be able to do that are almost always just scammers trying to "social engineer" your existing password or other account information from you.

Think about it. If they don't have access to Yahoo's internal password database (which is undoubtedly encrypted anyway) and if they can't infect and capture the new password off the person who stole it from you (if that's what happened), the only other way they could find your new / changed / stolen password is through what's called a brute-force attack, trying every word and every variation of word, numbers, reversed words, two or three word combinations, proper nouns, dates, etc and get lucky.

Don't you think Yahoo would notice a site slamming it with tens of thousands of failed login attempts on a single account?

Right. That's why these so-called hackers can't help you recover your password either, though they're happy to take your $99 or $300 or whatever.

There are avenues you can try with Yahoo, but if you can't prove without question that it's legitimately your account and that you have legal rights and access, then you might well just be out of luck.

Sorry to put it so bluntly, but I'm constantly amazed that I have a blog entry that says "until we do have some good solutions in this area, I can only strongly encourage everyone to have the toughest, best possible passwords possible" and yet I still get requests daily to help recover passwords, often with the most extraordinary backstories.

Maybe that's too vague. I really wish I COULD help out those of you with legitimate requests to recover your account access after having your credentials hijacked through a keystroke logger, virus or phishing attempt. But I cannot.

It's clear by most of your descriptions of what happened that you basically ASKED to be hacked.

For those of you who didn't pay attention to entering your info, what were you thinking?

For those of you who foolishly posted personal information on this, a website that is frequented by hacked people and hackers alike, you deserve what you got and will get.

For those of you who simply didn't read the article and posted demands IN CAPITAL LETTER HOLLERING for Dave to help you, well, I imagine you don't read *any* instructions and will end up in situations like this over and over until you learn to pay attention.

There IS a solution but you will have to WORK for it. Dave nor anyone else can do it for you, and even if they COULD, they would be a fool to try. If you don't understand this, there's no sense in trying to explain it anyway. Just follow the instructions below.

1) if you didn't pay attention to your account info when you signed up, forget about it. You don't deserve your account. If you are using it for business and you didn't note the details and save them, you shouldn't be in business.

Sorry, but that's just the way it is.

2) If you have most of your information you can call Yahoo customer service at the numbers noted by Dave and a commenter. You will have to be able to answer most of the basic info and be able to identify items in your mailbox.

That's your only chance. If the Yahoo rep says you have not provided the burden of proof required then you're up the creek.

You've all learned a valuable, and probably expensive, lesson in internet security. Here are a few guidelines to protect yourself in the future -

a) use an obscure username. Your real name is too easy. The username is half of the equation, if they don't know that then the password won't be of use to them.

b) as Dave said use a POWERFUL password. Something like
B4tt_02&!gg
which will take years to hack. Note the use of 10+ characters, at least one capital letter, at least one number, and at least one non-alphanumeric character. Your daughters birthday is too easy to hack. Your bedroom pet name is probably not as unique as you think it is. Use a bizarre password as above.

c) start yourself a card catalog that you can keep secure. Make a 3x5 card for each of your accounts and include all the details you used to identify yourself for the account. I keep mine in a small safe. If you can't keep basic information secure, then you shouldn't have accounts that are secure.

d) REVIEW YOUR INFORMATION PERIODICALLY. I can't stress this enough. Things happen. Sometimes hackers don't lock you out right away. They are looking for personal information they can use to steal from you or your contacts. Sometimes they change things like the secret question so that when they do decide to change your password, it's quick and you're done.

"Don't use free email accounts for anything important. It's not worth it. If your free email account and all the information in it went away tomorrow, would that be a problem for you? If so ... move now." As Leo said, you get what you pay for.

My Yahoo account was hacked and I can not access my email. I opened it while in middle school (or before-more than 10 yrs ago) and don't remember the answer to my secret question. Yahoo's customer service demands this.
I suggested them to:
-trying asking me specific questions about any of the 100s of emails in the account-as only the owner will be familiar with details
OR
-ask other people (that I normally contact through email) to verify that I'm the owner to the account.
However, I keep getting automated responses (both by email and phone).
I really need to access the information of the email (which is only valuable to me).I appreciate your help and will retribute if results are accomplished.

so basically your saying that i can know my zip, alternate email address and bday but if i dont remember my security question answer...that, that is it say good bye to my email and all my personal things i have on it...theres no way to recover it? I understand the whole part about not knowing who i really am but you have no help AT ALL? just lay it strait with me. No security answer=no email ever?

Slightly different problem.. I have a live account - it has NOT been hacked. I use Yahoo IM all the time - no issues as i log in automatically and have done since the start.

I use the latest IM 9.0.0.2162 which i understands does not store the PW locally [does that make sense]

Anyway - i dont know the password as i have not used/needed it in about 18 months but need to run Yahoo Messenger on my Blackberry so need the password.

Of course the details for recovery DOB / country / postcode email address could be anything.. as the details I think should be ok - fail. the alternative email address i used has long since retired so also not an option.

All PW recovery tools i have tried.. fail to retrieve password.

There must be a way..?

I have a problem with my yahoo account (koresh4real@yahoo.com).
It was still active and I was still using it . But later then when i tried to log in back, My account was locked. After 24 hours, I tried to log in again but it won't let me in. I found out that my password have been hacked. The hacker put an alternate email and 2 secret questions on my account, but as you can see, I didn't put any of those alternate and any question on my account untill the hakcer did it himself. Not a comment as such rather a request:you said that it may be another person and that is true,but if u are not the owner you cannot be straggling for more than one month to recover an e-mail which is not your:it is easy to give up after a certain period of time.
