How do I recover my password on Yahoo?

Hello, I've read your comments on recovering passwords or accounts like on Yahoo. I started investigating this when I suddenly found my own password was not working and the secret question had been changed by whoever hijacked the account. Do you have any advice for me aside from creating a new ID? I hate to say it but I'm considering trying to hijack it back.

I understand what you're talking about and know that if you have the bad luck to have an easily guessed password and someone backs into your account, you definitely have a problem.

Indeed, while I also have a Yahoo account, I spend much more time using Gmail as it's one of my main web-based email system.

What's amazing is that once every few weeks I get a "how to reset your password" message, suggesting that I've tried to log in and clicked the 'forgot my password' link, but, of course, I haven't. It's someone else messing around trying to sneak into my account.

But the flip side of this is one that I've written about before too: how do I know if you're really who you say you are and how would Yahoo, more importantly, know that you're who say you are? (see Recover my Yahoo account password?) After all, one of the most effective methods of breaking security is through social engineering, pretending you're someone other than who you are.

I wonder if it isn't just a fundamental problem with web-based systems that can't use anything smart like biometrics for identity verification?

I have a biometric fingerprint scanner on the Lenovo IBM X41 Tablet PC I've been evaluating over on my Intuitive Life Blog, but that still doesn't address how I can verify my identity with a remote system.

Think about it: even if the fingerprint scanner sent the scan data to a remote server, there's nothing to stop that data being intercepted and then duplicated, emulating the live scan of my finger when in fact it's someone masquerading as me.

A difficult problem, unquestionably, and until we do have some good solutions in this area, I can only strongly encourage everyone to have the toughest, best possible passwords possible.

It's clear by most of your descriptions of what happened that you basically ASKED to be hacked.

For those of you who didn't pay attention to entering your info, what were you thinking?

For those of you who foolishly posted personal information on this, a website that is frequented by hacked people and hackers alike, you deserve what you got and will get.

For those of you who simply didn't read the article and posted demands IN CAPITAL LETTER HOLLERING for Dave to help you, well, I imagine you don't read *any* instructions and will end up in situations like this over and over until you learn to pay attention.

There IS a solution but you will have to WORK for it. Dave nor anyone else can do it for you, and even if they COULD, they would be a fool to try. If you don't understand this, there's no sense in trying to explain it anyway. Just follow the instructions below.

1) if you didn't pay attention to your account info when you signed up, forget about it. You don't deserve your account. If you are using it for business and you didn't note the details and save them, you shouldn't be in business.

Sorry, but that's just the way it is.

2) If you have most of your information you can call Yahoo customer service at the numbers noted by Dave and a commenter. You will have to be able to answer most of the basic info and be able to identify items in your mailbox.

That's your only chance. If the Yahoo rep says you have not provided the burden of proof required then you're up the creek.

You've all learned a valuable, and probably expensive, lesson in internet security. Here are a few guidelines to protect yourself in the future -

a) use an obscure username. Your real name is too easy. The username is half of the equation, if they don't know that then the password won't be of use to them.

b) as Dave said use a POWERFUL password. Something like
B4tt_02&!gg
which will take years to hack. Note the use of 10+ characters, at least one capital letter, at least one number, and at least one non-alphanumeric character. Your daughters birthday is too easy to hack. Your bedroom pet name is probably not as unique as you think it is. Use a bizarre password as above.

c) start yourself a card catalog that you can keep secure. Make a 3x5 card for each of your accounts and include all the details you used to identify yourself for the account. I keep mine in a small safe. If you can't keep basic information secure, then you shouldn't have accounts that are secure.

d) REVIEW YOUR INFORMATION PERIODICALLY. I can't stress this enough. Things happen. Sometimes hackers don't lock you out right away. They are looking for personal information they can use to steal from you or your contacts. Sometimes they change things like the secret question so that when they do decide to change your password, it's quick and you're done.

"Don't use free email accounts for anything important. It's not worth it. If your free email account and all the information in it went away tomorrow, would that be a problem for you? If so ... move now." As Leo said, you get what you pay for.

My Yahoo account was hacked and I can not access my email. I opened it while in middle school (or before-more than 10 yrs ago) and don't remember the answer to my secret question. Yahoo's customer service demands this.
I suggested them to:
-trying asking me specific questions about any of the 100s of emails in the account-as only the owner will be familiar with details
OR
-ask other people (that I normally contact through email) to verify that I'm the owner to the account.
However, I keep getting automated responses (both by email and phone).
I really need to access the information of the email (which is only valuable to me).I appreciate your help and will retribute if results are accomplished.

Slightly different problem.. I have a live account - it has NOT been hacked. I use Yahoo IM all the time - no issues as i log in automatically and have done since the start.

I use the latest IM 9.0.0.2162 which i understands does not store the PW locally [does that make sense]

Anyway - i dont know the password as i have not used/needed it in about 18 months but need to run Yahoo Messenger on my Blackberry so need the password.

Of course the details for recovery DOB / country / postcode email address could be anything.. as the details I think should be ok - fail. the alternative email address i used has long since retired so also not an option.

All PW recovery tools i have tried.. fail to retrieve password.

There must be a way..?

my account was hacked by someone but I kept on thinking that it was my cousin because one time I shouted at him because he kept on teasing my little sister and he got mad really mad so he went home and he used the computer but i am not sure if he used yahoo messenger but after that incident happend my mom came home and and said that someone said a badword to my dad using my YM it was that same day and after a few days someone said a badword to my mom using my YM again and that person used a same badword but a bit different words and I keep on thinking that how did that person knew that my dad went to singapore which is true and thats why I kept on investigating incase my cousin hacked my password so please help me retrieve my password and my yahoo messenger user is: patrick_gladiator@yahoo.com
