How do I recover my password on Yahoo?Hello, I've read your comments on recovering passwords or accounts like on Yahoo. I started investigating this when I suddenly found my own password was not working and the secret question had been changed by whoever hijacked the account. Do you have any advice for me aside from creating a new ID? I hate to say it but I'm considering trying to hijack it back. I understand what you're talking about and know that if you have the bad luck to have an easily guessed password and someone backs into your account, you definitely have a problem. Indeed, while I also have a Yahoo account, I spend much more time using Gmail as it's one of my main web-based email system. What's amazing is that once every few weeks I get a "how to reset your password" message, suggesting that I've tried to log in and clicked the 'forgot my password' link, but, of course, I haven't. It's someone else messing around trying to sneak into my account. But the flip side of this is one that I've written about before too: how do I know if you're really who you say you are and how would Yahoo, more importantly, know that you're who say you are? (see Recover my Yahoo account password?) After all, one of the most effective methods of breaking security is through social engineering, pretending you're someone other than who you are. I wonder if it isn't just a fundamental problem with web-based systems that can't use anything smart like biometrics for identity verification? I have a biometric fingerprint scanner on the Lenovo IBM X41 Tablet PC I've been evaluating over on my Intuitive Life Blog, but that still doesn't address how I can verify my identity with a remote system. Think about it: even if the fingerprint scanner sent the scan data to a remote server, there's nothing to stop that data being intercepted and then duplicated, emulating the live scan of my finger when in fact it's someone masquerading as me. A difficult problem, unquestionably, and until we do have some good solutions in this area, I can only strongly encourage everyone to have the toughest, best possible passwords possible.

Hello Dave, I have a problem with my yahoo account. I used to have an account tranvinhdu_2000@yahoo.com and used it for almost 5 years. I changed my password quite often as a security measure. However, in November 2005, I changed the password but something happened and I can never log in my account again since then. I contacted yahoo but they refused to help. I had to abandon it and use a new one (dutran_ut@yahoo.com) which is a paid account. Since the incident, I lost many old friends and I still really love to have their contacts back. I would appreciate your help if you could please recover the password for me. As long as you logged in the account with the recovered password, you will see what I am saying here is honest. If they can't do it, third parties can't do it either. Though they can certainly ask you for your information and try to scam you... If they use Firefox there is a tools button on the top of the bar. Then press Options, then passwords tab. It is easy from there and it will tell how to show all stored passwords on the screen. That's the point of my original article, is that the people who claim to be able to do that are almost always just scammers trying to "social engineer" your existing password or other account information from you. Think about it. If they don't have access to Yahoo's internal password database (which is undoubtedly encrypted anyway) and if they can't infect and capture the new password off the person who stole it from you (if that's what happened), the only other way they could find your new / changed / stolen password is through what's called a brute-force attack, trying every word and every variation of word, numbers, reversed words, two or three word combinations, proper nouns, dates, etc and get lucky. Don't you think Yahoo would notice a site slamming it with tens of thousands of failed login attempts on a single account? Right. That's why these so-called hackers can't help you recover your password either, though they're happy to take your $99 or $300 or whatever. There are avenues you can try with Yahoo, but if you can't prove without question that it's legitimately your account and that you have legal rights and access, then you might well just be out of luck. Sorry to put it so bluntly, but I'm constantly amazed that I have a blog entry that says "until we do have some good solutions in this area, I can only strongly encourage everyone to have the toughest, best possible passwords possible" and yet I still get requests daily to help recover passwords, often with the most extraordinary backstories. Maybe that's too vague. I really wish I COULD help out those of you with legitimate requests to recover your account access after having your credentials hijacked through a keystroke logger, virus or phishing attempt. If you don't understand this, there's no sense in trying to explain it anyway. Just follow the instructions below. 1) if you didn't pay attention to your account info when you signed up, forget about it. You don't deserve your account. If you are using it for business and you didn't note the details and save them, you shouldn't be in business. Sorry, but that's just the way it is. 2) If you have most of your information you can call Yahoo customer service at the numbers noted by Dave and a commenter. You will have to be able to answer most of the basic info and be able to identify items in your mailbox. That's your only chance. If the Yahoo rep says you have not provided the burden of proof required then you're up the creek. You've all learned a valuable, and probably expensive, lesson in internet security. Here are a few guidelines to protect yourself in the future - a) use an obscure username. Your real name is too easy. The username is half of the equation, if they don't know that then the password won't be of use to them. b) as Dave said use a POWERFUL password. Something like c) start yourself a card catalog that you can keep secure. Make a 3x5 card for each of your accounts and include all the details you used to identify yourself for the account. I keep mine in a small safe. If you can't keep basic information secure, then you shouldn't have accounts that are secure. d) REVIEW YOUR INFORMATION PERIODICALLY. I can't stress this enough. Things happen. Sometimes hackers don't lock you out right away. They are looking for personal information they can use to steal from you or your contacts. Sometimes they change things like the secret question so that when they do decide to change your password, it's quick and you're done. Leo Notenboom of ask-leo.com had this well put comment on his site in an article about the same issue - "Don't use free email accounts for anything important. It's not worth it. If your free email account and all the information in it went away tomorrow, would that be a problem for you? If so ... move now." As Leo said, you get what you pay for. Sorry for my negativity, but the ignorance displayed in these comments really got to me. Tracy! . Hi there, I would like to ask if there's any possibility I can recover my Yahoo account? I couldn't log in. I tried to answer the security question, but I forgot what I put in there. Is there anyway that I can have it back? Please help me on this one. Thanks...
