How do I put music on my Apple iPod?
I've just bought a new Apple iPod Mini and am really excited about getting started loading my music onto it, but I can't figure out how to do so! Windows Media Player can synchronize music with the iPod, but the iPod itself doesn't then seem to know the music is there. HELP!

This is a surprisingly common question for new iPod owners who are using Microsoft Windows on their PC, and the basic answer is that you must use Apple iTunes to get music onto your iPod. Windows Media Player can see the iPod, but only as a hard disk, the section on the iPod where the music is stored is "hidden" and only iTunes knows how to get to it.
Let me take you through the steps of getting some music onto an Apple iPod with iTunes on a Windows XP system, then I'll show you quickly why WMP can't do the same thing.
The first time you plug your iPod into your PC via the included USB cable, you'll probably see something like this:
What's happened is that the underlying drivers for this class of device have been updated by Microsoft and the changes have been automatically applied - thankfully! - but you need to reboot. Do so, and then the next time you start up, your iPod will not generate any messages of this nature.
Now you really need to get a recent copy of iTunes onto your PC. There's a CDROM that's included with your iPod that has the iTunes program thereon, but if you don't want to mess with that, you can simply go to apple.com/itunes to download the latest version.
The next step is to actually launch the iTunes program. If you don't have the very latest version, you might well see this dialog window:
Generally, it's a good idea to make sure you always have the latest version, so click "yes" and it'll pop up your Web browser and take you directly to the download page, at which point you want to enter your email address, uncheck any boxes to skip certain types of email, and start the download:
I always uncheck these boxes, personally, as I already get too darn much email, but you might enjoy learning about free music available from the popular iTunes Music Store, etc., as indicated.
Either way, eventually you'll be able to launch iTunes and have it start up, rather than ask you to do other stuff. At that point it will recognize the iPod that you've plugged in and step you through the registration process.
It'll look like this:
You can stick with the default name for your device, but I always try to pick something more fun. For this 30GB iPod Video, I'm going to call it "MicroTV", because, well, it's a pretty tiny video screen. I also uncheck "automatically update music" because I like to control what happens to my iPod manually rather than have things magically occur and then not be what I want. You may find that having iTunes sync your iPod automatically works better for you, however.
When you're done with this configuration step, click "Next" and you'll see:
If you're so inclined, register your iPod, or just click "Finish".
Now, finally, you can see iTunes in all its glory:
All the colorful material in the middle is from the Apple iTunes Music Store. On the left side column, notice all the various categories of music and content, very similar to Microsoft Windows Media Player. Just below the Music Store, however, is what we seek. It says "MicroTV", as that's the name of my iPod.
Click on this entry, whatever name you've given your own iPod, and you'll see your music list, which is completely blank:
Now click on the "Library" link also on the left column and you'll see what albums or music you've ripped or otherwise copied into your iTunes library. If you haven't ripped any CDs, put one into your computer and click on the "Import" button in iTunes that'll show up.
On this particular computer, I've already ripped a few audio CDs, as you can see:
There's a much nicer way to explore the music, however. Click on the "Browse" button on the top right (it looks like an all-seeing eye) and a new panel will show up that lists genre, artists and albums too:
I'm going to go ahead and copy my jazz album, by Jeff Lorber, onto my iPod. I do that by clicking on the "Jazz" genre, then dragging and dropping that onto the name of the iPod on the left side. Then I can see the music being copied onto the iPod itself:
Doesn't take very long, and once it's done, I can eject my iPod and start enjoying the tiny music player.
However, let's have a quick peek at the basic iPod configuration while it's still plugged in by clicking on the "iPod Preferences" button on the bottom of the window:
The preferences look like this:
You can probably leave them all as-is, but that's how you get to them if you want to change anything about your iPod.
At this point we're done. The easiest way to disconnect the iPod from your computer is to click on the little "eject" button, but before we do, let's have a very quick look at how Windows Media Player sees the iPod and why it's so darn hard to get music from WMP to an iPod.
WMP certainly doesn't show a "MicroTV" option to make life easy. Click on the "Sync" button, however, and you'll see that it can indeed see the iPod that's plugged in:
This is deceptive, though, because the section of the iPod that holds the music that the iPod player itself can access isn't what's listed. The iPod can serve as a convenient and portable hard disk, and it's that section of the device that WMP can access. Copy music and it'll be accessible by another Windows system, but the iPod itself won't see it. Not good!
To actually get music out of WMP and onto an iPod involves some conversion and fiddling around, as detailed here: Convert WMA into MP3 for use with iPods.
Let's go back to iTunes, however, and eject the iPod. That's done by clicking on the tiny upward triangle adjacent to the iPod name:
Now the device is disconnected and you can unplug it, plug in some headphones or earbuds and enjoy your music!
Working with the iPod Itself
The easiest way to do that? Push the play button once on your iPod to wake it up, and you'll see this:
Now use the scrollwheel to highlight either "Playlists", "Artists", "Albums", "Songs" or "Genres", the push the button in the middle of the scrollwheel to select that choice:
I'll select "songs", and here's what I see:
Now I can pick a specific song by again using the scrollwheel, then click "OK" (the button in the middle of the wheel) and the song starts playing:
And now, let's relax with our own personal jam!
Hope that helps you get up to speed with the iPod. You'll find it gets a lot easier to work with after a few minutes of fiddling around.

Hi i recently bought an Ipod Video (30 Gig) and sometimes it says on the ipod "Do not disconnect", while in the Itunes Window it says "update complete, ok to disconnect". Okay so I got a 30GB ipod video in may and i am just now getting to use it, I have it connected but I downloaded the new itunes 7, and it is different from what you have shown. Joey, what you need to do is pull all the music from your old iPod onto your computer in iTunes. Then when you hook up the new iPod it'll ask if you want to "pair" it to your computer. Say yes, and when it's done, you should be able to drag and drop all your music from your library onto the iPod entry in iTunes and copy it all across. If you're talking about two COMPUTERS, then, again, you can use the iPod as the carrier, or you can use a program like ipodcopy (see download.com for a copy) or Senuti (Mac version).
my computer isn compadable for itunes does that mean i cant use my new ipod nano at all?

HELP! I have an older ipod shuffle-used to work just fine...bought newer shuffle for hubby @ Christimas, now BOTH are not working. They SEEM to take a charge, I take all the steps to download the music, I eject and try to use, the power does not stay on. (Apple tech said that my computer isn't 'syncing' and to call Microsoft becuz it is a problem w-my computer and Microsoft tells me "call Apple"!!!) I've had an iPod mini for the past 3 years and I had to buy some kind of new iPod because my mini is broken. So I got this 30GB iPod and I have all my music on it, but I try to put music videos onto it and it says "ACDC - Highway To Hell" was not copied to the iPod "Mariah's iPod" because it cannot be played on this iPod" WHAT THE HECK DOES THAT MEAN? How can I make it so I can watch my music videos??
That's an interesting question! I think that if you're talking about two MP3 files, you can just open them up in something like Audacity, join them, then resave it as a new MP3 file that you can import back into iTunes. If it's an AAC or Apple's proprietary iTunes format, you might be stuck. :-0

i have that same problem that that Rebekah girl has. I try to drag the songs from my library to my ipod but that no entry sign won't let me. I also cant seem to delete the songs that are on my ipod that I dont want anymore. Please help....
The main reason that you get the "no entry" sign, in my experience, is that you've configured your iPod to automatically sync with one or more playlists. If you do that, you can't just drag additional music or videos onto the device. Instead, you need to go into the iTunes preferences area for your iPod and set it to "manually manage songs and playlists" then you can drag and drop to your heart's content!

I just purchased a 30G Ipod and I want to load my CD collection onto it. The problem I have is I can only hold about 2G worth of music on my computer. If I delete that music and load more, when I try to load it to the Ipod, it wipes out the previously loaded music and replaces it with the new. Is there any way to keep adding to the Ipod without having it do what it's doing short of me installing another hard drive? Thanks

Tori, you don't seem to be able to selectively delete without "pairing" your iPod to a computer, which will wipe the music out. You might have to just endure for now...

I have a lot of random songs that I ripped from CDs onto my computer in one big Music folder. I often borrow CDs (some bought, some they made) from friends and rip 1 or 2 songs I like onto my computer.
How can I get those songs onto my IPod? I haven't tried or messed around w/ anything yet. I could, I guess burn them all onto CDR's using Windows Media Player and then open ITunes and imort but I have so many songs and the blank CDs cost money and I don't want to have tons of CDs w/ random mixes for no reason.

Also, in your opinion why are IPods more popular than generic brands when generic brands allow you to use anything not just Itunes?
Just to elaborate - when I say 'generic' I don't mean some crappy brand, I meant more like Sony or another well known electronics brand.

I have more of a question than a comment. I have looked all over and cant find an answer. Basically I have no problem uploading music onto my ipod. However I have an audio book. It is converted into MP3 format. When I try to add it to Itunes there is no response its as if I didnt try to add anything at all. I tried the drag and drop- no response, tried file add- no response. I even tried to play around with configurations (the files properties are 80kbps so I went into Itunes and selected 80kbps again no response. This is difficult to figure out whats wrong since I dont get any error messages not even an hourglass saying its loading nothing at all. All it does is right after I drop it into itunes nothing happens. Is there a way to solve this I am running XP on a PC. The file is an audiobook in MP3 format and runs absolutely fine on Windows Media Player. Itunes even changed the files icon to the Itunes icon but it doesnt respond to it even when I double click on the file to play the file. The file does have two languages in it- I mean its a learning spanish file so theres english and spanish.

I have an ipod nano (the older version) and everything was working fine with iTunes and everything until our computer crashed and i needed to take it in to be fixed. Well the place i took it to ended up completely wiping out all programs on my computer in order to fix it. So i re-installed iTunes and everything seemed to be working until i went to update my ipod and it said that for some reason over a hundred of my songs were no longer valid on my ipod an it ended up deleting them off my ipod, however they are still in my library. I just got an iPod Video and now when I try to drag music into my iPod there is the No Entry Sign. Why is that I cant get music on unless i delete all the songs from my iPod and then add the couple songs in when i sync them all again.

Alma, you need to have Apple's iTunes program running on your computer when you hook up your iPod. That lets you synchronize music and "eject" the iPod when you're done so the "do not disconnect" message goes away! You can grab a copy of the software for free at

Mac, yes you can. If you're on a PC, go to download.com and grab a copy of "ipodcopy" from there, and if you're on a Mac, get "Senuti" from versiontracker.com. I just bought an iPod (30GB; video) and I couldn't figure out how to put songs on it, so I decided on burning discs, then just putting them on the iPod. Well, I'm pretty much kinda stupid sometimes, and the new iTunes (7) confused me wayyy much. Then, I found the sync button, and it's SO MUCH EASIER THAN THE CD TRANSFERING. Just download songs from limewire (or something), drag them from the folder that they're in and into the iTunes library, then hit "sync" when you click your iPod's name(go to the music tab, and make sure that you have it set to manually editing your songs.) It is possible to load songs on your iPod using WinAmp. I do it. Why? Because I hate iTunes.
Just open the media library and choose Portables -> Ipod, you'll see the songs on your iPod (Don't forget to plug it in first). You can add songs to the iPod directly from the playlist by right clicking them and then choosing: sent to > iPod.

I thought I was doing everything right -- downloaded itunes, then put the CD I wanted to load into the ipod into my CD rom place, then plugged the ipod into the computer, and it would sync into the ipod. Seemed to work fine. When I went to use the ipod, most of the songs play strangely (bummer, I have loaded 2000 on the ipod now) -- they are jumbled, or they skip, or are sped up from normal, like twice as fast. Any clue how I fix this? When I play the songs from on the computer, using the computer and iTunes, they sound fine. I have that ipod that holds 20,000 songs capability....plenty of space, etc. Thanks in advance for your help.

Hey, i just got my new iPod Video (80BG) today, and i just wanted to add that for you people who say that when they connect their iPod to their computer and it doesn't say anything on the screen (pc screen), try going to your "My Computer" program. and your iPod option thing will be there because when ever i connected my iPod it never displayed anything on the main screen about it coming on so i went into "My Computer" and it was always there. I neeed help!! I have a 4GB ipod nano. I downloaded my music with no trouble, but right after the download, the ipod ceased responding. My computer says it doesn't recognize the ipod. All the ipod does is switch back and forth from the Apple icon to a blank screen. This is my second ipod doing the exact same thing so I'm sure it's me doing something wrong. I am running Windows XP. i have the mac laptop but the thing is that when ever i try to install itunes it always says that install Mac OS X 10.4.9 i went to the apple site and clicked download. the download box did come but after a few minutes of downloadig it stops dead please guide me for i want to download songs for my IPOD CLASSIC.

I see it on my playlist but when i try to sync them on the ipod it says it can only be connected to one library at a time and gives me the option to ERASE AND SYNC or CANCEL. hi, i download music using bearshare, they upgraded so i went from having the old version to the new one. my ipod had no problems downloading music from the old bearshare and then converting to my itunes. the new version will not convert to itunes it states it is not the correct format. i followed all ways to switch formats, but it will not work at all. it seems to be blocked. my ipod only recognizes itunes. can you help me?

Does your iPod say "do not dissconect" and you don't thank it is doing anything?
Well it might not be doing anything at all...
Okay first step
Go to www.itunes.com an it should redierect you to www.apple.com/itunes/overview/ look on your right and you should see in blue Download Now
2nd step:
Click download now
3rd step:
Let the downloading procces begin and follow there steps, If somthing comes up staten to let itunes organize it self click yes, let the itunes do everything on its on.
4th step:
Buy cheap music from walmart.com and then if u followed step 3 music should add to itunes.
Oh yeah and make sure your computer restarts after downloading itunes, or it will not run properly.
5th step: Plug-in your iPod and you need to look up and You will see something in under itunes logo saying syncing do not discconect Copying files
Example
Copying file songs 1-87
if you have 1-100songs let the syncing procces stay on for about 1hour and then look down screen where your internet conection is and you should see a remove safely, always use it to remove your iPod becuase Your iPod and computer are talking.
This should work, if not try it again. if still not work im sorry

I bought my ipod 80gb black video g5 a few days ago. I ran up itunes, the first time everything ran smoothly. It connected and the music/video clips were transferred. The problem arose when;
1) Today I decided to add a few more video clips. I load these video clips onto itunes.
2) I connect the ipod, itunes opens. I press sync. For a long while, perhaps 2-3 min it says at the top of itunes "Syncing ipod - do not disconnect." Then out of the blue comes a pop-up error message saying "The ipod [the name of my ipod] cannot be synced. The required disc not found." And the synching did not take place. Everything remained the same on my ipod. I still have the 11gb of music I put on it earlier, but nothing from the itunes added to it.
3) At this point I exit itunes. Open it up again. However now my ipod has dissappeared and is no longer shown on the itunes. Now sure if this is normal or not.
4) I reboot. I connect the ipod again. Itunes starts. This time I tick "enable disc usage" however the end result is the same. I get the same error message again

all you have to do is
install Itunes from itunes and connet your ipod touch to the PC
and it will say to call it a name
call it whatever and then you`ll see music in the sidebar just below ipod
click on that and drag music
(remember you can`t put on wma songs so you have to convert them)
if you have a song like that you have to click on file on itunes and add file to library, now it says this song is a wma do you want to convert it to acc say yes
NOTE acc can go on ipod so can mp3
now you have to wait when it finishes and you have to go to my music the folder
and then you have too click on itunes
then itunes music and then you`ll see the alburn name of the song you converted if it has no name it will be Unknown Alburn click on that then you`ll see the song,
then go to the song menu below the ipod name,
this is where all your songs on your ipod are so you drag the song onto that and you have a song.
to get an app you need wi-fi so you goto settings wi-fi turn on and if you see a wireless connect to it and then open the app store and you can download a app for example a free app
NOTICE: you need a apple store account............
Now you have too go on your computer open up Itunes and click on store on the top and click on create account do that put in your email and password this will be your apple store account now you have to say you agree with terms and conditions and then you either put in a cridet card or a apple card next you get a email then you can buy whatever you want

I manage my ipod & itunes manually, many songs & movies in my library show that no entry, circle w/ line in it, blocking me from moving it when I drag them to my playlists. These are all items that have been on my ipod at one time before so I don't understand. Also when I try auto sync these same items still will not go to ipod. They play fine in my library though. I wrote you about an hour ago. Same prob new things to add. I manually manage my itunes acct. When I drag movies, etc. from library to my ipod movie playlist it looks good, appears to be working. But when I go to the list they are not there. They play perfect on itunes & have at one time been on my ipod & played. They accidentally got deleted. "You must use Apple iTunes to get music onto your iPod." -- Absolutely false. There are many other methods, such as Winamp plugins, and alternative firmware such as Rockbox, which I use.

Okay so I have an iPOD. I know how to sync songs, blah, blah, blah. But I recently found my old mp3/4 player, and found all these awesome songs I used to listen to. How do I get these songs, from my old mp3, onto my iPod? It seems as if Windows can only copy stuff from CDs, not actual players. When I plug in my old mp3 device, and click view contents, I don't see any of the songs in the folder, and nothing shows up in player.

I have a new mini and must have missed the option to sync my mini. So when plugged in it doesn't show up in Itunes even though I gave it a unique name. How can I get back to that option? For those of you finding that iTunes wipes out all your old songs when you try to add new ones, look more closely at your song management options. You might want to move to 'manage songs manually' and then explicitly drag and drop music out of your iTunes library onto the iPod icon when it's hooked up, rather than have it automatically sync.
Linwood, I'm not sure what's going on with your Mini: if you hook up your iPod then start up iTunes and wait a minute or two, does it show up in iTunes or not? There is a configuration option that lets you specify whether you want iTunes to automatically launch or not when you plug in an iPod: maybe that's what you want to specify in the future?

Eric, the iPod shuffle is a bit of a different beast. How are you plugging it into your computer? Try this: quit iTunes, plug in your iPod Shuffle, then launch iTunes. Should see the device.
Herij, one of the frustrating things about the iPod is that it has to be "paired" with a single computer. That computer is its "master" and if you hook it up to a different computer, iTunes will want to "pair" it with the new computer, which involves wiping it and starting over. A pain in the booty, for sure. No great solution, you just need to pick a single computer and have that be the paired master for your iPod, then any music you want to add you should just copy onto that computer (via email, file transfer, USB thumb drive, etc) before you sync.

Shelley, sort of yes, but the USB will let you connect your iPod to your computer, but you still have the issue of getting content onto your computer in the first place, so you can put it on the iPod. Make sense?

Payton, you'll lose what you have on the iPod, but click on "Restore" when it's hooked up to your Mac and it'll wipe it and reconfigure it to be Mac friendly.

Actually, you certainly do not need to use iTunes to put music on your iPod. You can you use any other music/vid converter; windows xp, media monkey, etc...

Patricia, sometimes iTunes isn't set as the default program for an iPod when plugged in. Easily sidestepped: launch iTunes THEN plug in your iPod and give it 30 seconds or so...
Kaelyn, it doesn't matter how your iPod was loaded with music. To make your life simple, you need to "pair" it with a single computer. When you do that, it'll wipe the iPod clean and restore it. Beforehand, run a third-party app like iPodCopy or Senuti and pull all the music that you want to keep off the device.

Jorgiana, you'll need to download all the music from your iPod onto your computer (try Senuti or ipodcopy, both third party apps), import all the music into your iTunes library, then let iTunes do a restore on the iPod. Once that's done resync with all the music and let it copy everything back on. A pain, but it'll solve the problem.
AdRtist, plug your iPod into a computer running iTunes (ideally the computer your'e going to always be using with the iPod to manage its content) and choose "Restore". It'll wipe it clean.

Heather, you do realize that memberareasite is an illegal site and everything you would get off it is in violation of copyright and licensing laws and puts you in a position where you could theoretically be sued by the MPAA or RIAA? More importantly, it also defrauds the artists that create the content and means that they can't afford to create that next album, audio book or movie? I'd skip it and work with your own music CDs or the Apple iTunes Store, where you pay, but where the artists are compensated AND you have the license for the content.

I have been importing songs from my CD collection on to my ipod shuffle but after about 100 odd tracks it is telling me there is insufficient space. Can I get an upgrade or do I have to buy a better ipod?
KAPIL, if you can't drag songs onto your iPod it's because you have sync already set up. Uncheck that option in iTunes and it'll let you manage your music manually, but be aware that the first time you do it, iTunes will zealously wipe all the music off your iPod. Then just copy it back on. :-)
Michael, the iPod shuffle doesn't doesn't have a ton of room. Sounds like you need a bigger one!

Vicky, that's weird. Are you using a laptop for syncing? If so, I suggest you take both the laptop and iPhone into the Apple Store, after making an appointment with a "Genius", so they can help you debug things. Might be a bad hardware connector on the phone if it's not seen *at all* even while the iPod works fine.

I just bought a third generation ipod touch (which I was really excited about) until I found out that it does not work with WMP - frustrating. Instead, I am trying to figure out itunes, but am not finding it user friendly at all. I've tried using MGTEK dopisp, but I get a screen that says that it doesn't support my device. iPod isn't working? Reset it (hold down the menu and center buttons and count to ten. slowly). If that doesn't fix it, you might need to talk with someone at Apple to find out your options. Good luck, everyone!

ally, I don't have the latest Kate Perry CD to test, but is it an "interactive music CD" or anything similar? Does it include computer content and/or play videos if you put the CD into a computer? If so, those kind of "smart" discs can be end up unreadable on a Mac. It's rare, but it's possible...

i downloaded all my cds to my computer. i have a ipod. in itunes it shows all my music, but some songs will not download to my ipod...can't figure out why?

Gladys, I have no idea why that's happening and would encourage you to closely examine the podcast sync settings in iTunes to see if something's not set as you believe.
Happy, you're clear and free: If you try to sync music to your iPod that you don't have permission to use (for example, a friend buys a song on iTunes, copies the file and you put it in your music library, but don't know their iTunes password) it will just complain and sync everything else.

Hi Dave - just came across your site ....amazing! I love itunes but don't love not having any means of communication with them (you've heard all that one million times).....
I am sharing my library with my 2 laptop pcs. all above board I think....but my newest computer doesn't have any music I've bought since April. nor does it have my latest playlists.
Both computers are on homeshare....not sure why.

I recently put my daughters ipod on charge and when I took it off I didnt disconnect properly or eject properly and now when I go onto the play list of songs that should be on there at least 74 of the tunes are not on due to my hick up, is there anyway or fixing this as I really cant afford to buy them all again. these songs are still on the play list but I cannot sync them onto the ipod anymore. I feel so bad and ashamed that I have done this, please help me.

Initializing a new iPod unfortunately requires iTunes. But once the initial setup is completed, you can uninstall the monstrosity and all the excess baggage that it forces you to install. Then you can manage the iPod with small, simple freeware programs such as Sharepod and/or Copy Trans Manager.

Shahde, you'll need to import those songs into your iTunes library before you proceed to get them onto your iPod. To do that, just drag and drop them into the top left area of the iTunes window, where it lists "Music" "Movies", "TV Shows", etc. Then you can copy it with a regular ole sync.
Teddy, you should see tabs along the top of the iTunes window labeled "Music" "Info", "Movies" and so on, once you've clicked on your iPod to see the summary info. Click on them! :-)
Ok, I just gotthe new ipod touch 4 for christmas, its 8 g. I downlaoded iTunes and everything but the price is like,$ 2.00 for each song! I dont get it! Selena, I bet that your friends have ripped CDs that they've borrowed from friends, bought at the store for a discount, or even just had laying around. Yeah, if you fill an iPod will all new music, it's crazy expensive!

Don't give up hope, Diane! :-) Shuffles are pretty darn easy to work with: download iTunes, add music to it (as discussed above), then plug your iPod into your computer by using the included cable to plug it into the USB port on your computer. It'll appear in iTunes after 30-45 seconds and will give you the option of "filling it with music". Choose that and you should be able to go from there! :-)
Hi Dave, I got an iPod Nano 5th Gen for my birthday and every time I try to download a song or album from iTunes, I get the following message "There was a problem downloading (insert song/album title. You do not have enough access privileges for this operation." I am running Windows XP on my home computer. THE IPOD WILL PUT THE SONGS AND ALBUMS WHERE IT WANTS TO AND NOT WHERE YOU WANT IT. if you want an album by a band in the order of the albums songs, you will not get it in order, they will be in the wrong order and all over the place in your ipod. ipods are not for albums in order, the iTunes and iPod will place things randomly wherever they want to. there will be no rhyme or reason why half your songs cannot be located, why albums are split apart, nothing plays the way it should or how YOU WANT IT.
but, if you LIKE random songs all over the place with no rhyme or reason to it, then you might like the ipod and iTunes.
if you like easy, simple, organized full length album the WAY THEY WERE MEANT TO BE HEARD IN THE FIRST PLACE, then you DEFINITELY SHOULD NOT BUY AN IPOD OF ANY TYPE.

I have an 8gb ipod nano. For some reason my computer doesn't recongnize it when I plug it into the usb port. The port is ok because I use it for my webcam and other things. I have tried several things like rebooting the ipod itself but nothing works. I also tried the ipod on different computers with the same results it's not recogized by the computer. ive been having a huge problem with my ipod.
the problem is when i connect it to my laptop or any computer it seems that theres no connection between them. Certainly the ipod gets charged but the computer cant seem to find the ipod. and When i try to sync it with itunes, itunes cant seem to find it. Thus i've tried everything but it just doesnt do a thing. I can't put songs anymore and somehow my Ipod kinda "lost" its memory like b4 it had over 900 songs but now theres nothing?
Please can you help me I dont want my money to go to waste! Thank you :)

I have an Ipod Video 30G and recently bought a new Ipod Touch 32G. The computer that contained all my songs for the Ipod Video crashed sometime back and I lost everything having to do with that Ipod. However, I have 447 songs still on the Ipod. My new Itunes program will not download any of the songs that were not purchased from Apple from the older Ipod. Do you know of a way to transfer them to the new Ipod Touch? Thanks abunch for any help!

Hi Dave: My computer crashed but I had a backup of my itunes music. After it was fixed, I downloaded itunes version to my computer and did the add files to library. All songs were downloaded into the itunes but when I go to play them it says it can not find the folder. I try to locate it and find it but it still doesnt play. Any suggestions?
I also deleted itunes and tried downloading again but still the same. Please help

Not entirely sure what you're asking about, Sarah. You have the music you want on the iPod in your ITunes library already, right? The problem is that when you plug in the iPod, it won't let you copy the music across? If so -- and I warn you, this will erase everything on the iPod -- next time it's plugged in click on the "Restore" button in iTunes and it'll reformat the iPod and "pair" it with your own iTunes library. Then you can copy across whatever you'd like.
I bought an IPod Nano and my Windows Music Library will not read it. When I plug the Nano into my computer the message is get on the screen is asking me what I want to do "open files" or "use as a backup". How can I add my music to my Nano? I bought the music from Wal-Mart and ITunes over the past 5 years or so. The guy at Best Buy said this would sync with the music I already have in my library. Can you help me as Apple Support or ITunes Support said they do not support this new Nano. I was told to go to apple.com/support and when the page came up to type in "not seeing ITunes" but there is no place to type the info in. I really need help. My old IPod died on me.

Ok, my niece had her Ipod Nano set to manually download. Someone plugged in their Ipod touch to her computer. She is afraid she has lost all her music. Is this true? She comes home in two days, can you let me know as soon as possible if we can retrieve her music...When they plugged in the ipod touch, it came up as ...playlist.

Natalie, the music library on the computer should be just fine. Worst case you might need to reauthorize the computer for purchases, but it would be very odd for anything to be wiped. But then again, you DO have a backup of some sort, right?

Hello I have a question about taking out songs from an ipod. I have an ipod that has songs that I want to take out but the problem is that when I put those songs on the ipod, it was on a mac computer. So now I have a windows laptop and my question is how can I take out the songs out of the ipod if the ipod is formatted to work for a mac computer? Am I still able to take the songs out of the ipod? iTunes doesn't load up, jut click agree on the EULA and pooft. When I press Sync in WMP it still don't see the iPod. Apple website is no help, your instructions still don't tell you how to put music on the iPod... Bought a $29 'dollar store' MP3 player, wow works great! Drag and Drop, syncs my WMP and everything! ... Brand new iPod Touch 64gig for sale, cheep... (garbage)

Hello, Mr. Taylor. I have a 64G iPod touch into which I successfully loaded about 300 songs from my computer's external hard drive into the iPod via the iTunes. (I copied the songs from the directory into the computer's iTunes and then copied it from there into the iPod's iTunes.) I noticed that it took a few moments for it to load and that "churning" symbol kept going around as it copied the songs. Now, I'm trying to load additional songs into my iPod, but whatever I copy goes in instantly with a grey color with a non-turning churning symbol on the side of the the song and it cannot be played. The songs, while in the computer's iTunes is fine, but they are not getting copied into the iPod. Can you tell me why not? There's still plenty of space in the iPod.

I have a 2 plus year old iPod Photo 60GB. I am having trouble marrying consecutive songs together; i.e. like a prelude or intro to the next song. I am currently run iTunes 6.0.4.2, and have searched every dropdown menu, iPod for Dummies books, and other websites to find out how to do this. By accident, I found your site.
