How do I put music on my Apple iPod?

I have a 2 plus year old iPod Photo 60GB. I am having trouble marrying consecutive songs together; i.e. like a prelude or intro to the next song. I am currently run iTunes 6.0.4.2, and have searched every dropdown menu, iPod for Dummies books, and other websites to find out how to do this. By accident, I found your site. Any suggestions on how to solve this? Thanks.

Hi i recently bought an Ipod Video (30 Gig) and sometimes it says on the ipod "Do not disconnect", while in the Itunes Window it says "update complete, ok to disconnect". It wasn't doing this before, and I was wondering if this could be a problem, and what program would you recommend for converting movies to the ipod.

Okay so I got a 30GB ipod video in may and i am just now getting to use it, I have it connected but I downloaded the new itunes 7, and it is different from what you have shown. Joey, what you need to do is pull all the music from your old iPod onto your computer in iTunes. Then when you hook up the new iPod it'll ask if you want to "pair" it to your computer. Say yes, and when it's done, you should be able to drag and drop all your music from your library onto the iPod entry in iTunes and copy it all across. If you're talking about two COMPUTERS, then, again, you can use the iPod as the carrier, or you can use a program like ipodcopy (see download.com for a copy) or Senuti (Mac version).

HELP! I have an older ipod shuffle-used to work just fine...bought newer shuffle for hubby @ Christimas, now BOTH are not working. They SEEM to take a charge, I take all the steps to download the music, I eject and try to use, the power does not stay on. So I got this 30GB iPod and I have all my music on it, but I try to put music videos onto it and it says "ACDC - Highway To Hell" was not copied to the iPod "Mariah's iPod" because it cannot be played on this iPod" WHAT THE HECK DOES THAT MEAN? That's an interesting question! I think that if you're talking about two MP3 files, you can just open them up in something like Audacity, join them, then resave it as a new MP3 file that you can import back into iTunes. If it's an AAC or Apple's proprietary iTunes format, you might be stuck. :-0

i have that same problem that that Rebekah girl has. I try to drag the songs from my library to my ipod but that no entry sign won't let me. I also cant seem to delete the songs that are on my ipod that I dont want anymore. Please help....

The main reason that you get the "no entry" sign, in my experience, is that you've configured your iPod to automatically sync with one or more playlists. If you do that, you can't just drag additional music or videos onto the device. Instead, you need to go into the iTunes preferences area for your iPod and set it to "manually manage songs and playlists" then you can drag and drop to your heart's content!

I just purchased a 30G Ipod and I want to load my CD collection onto it. The problem I have is I can only hold about 2G worth of music on my computer. If I delete that music and load more, when I try to load it to the Ipod, it wipes out the previously loaded music and replaces it with the new. Tori, you don't seem to be able to selectively delete without "pairing" your iPod to a computer, which will wipe the music out. You might have to just endure for now...

I have a lot of random songs that I ripped from CDs onto my computer in one big Music folder. I often borrow CDs (some bought, some they made) from friends and rip 1 or 2 songs I like onto my computer.
How can I get those songs onto my IPod? I haven't tried or messed around w/ anything yet. I could, I guess burn them all onto CDR's using Windows Media Player and then open ITunes and imort but I have so many songs and the blank CDs cost money and I don't want to have tons of CDs w/ random mixes for no reason.
Can I somehow get the songs that I have on my computer that I usually play w/ WMP over to ITunes so I can download some of them onto the IPod?

Also, in your opinion why are IPods more popular than generic brands when generic brands allow you to use anything not just Itunes?

Just to elaborate - when I say 'generic' I don't mean some crappy brand, I meant more like Sony or another well known electronics brand.

I have more of a question than a comment. I have looked all over and cant find an answer. Basically I have no problem uploading music onto my ipod. However I have an audio book. It is converted into MP3 format. When I try to add it to Itunes there is no response its as if I didnt try to add anything at all. I tried the drag and drop- no response, tried file add- no response. I even tried to play around with configurations (the files properties are 80kbps so I went into Itunes and selected 80kbps again no response. This is difficult to figure out whats wrong since I dont get any error messages not even an hourglass saying its loading nothing at all. All it does is right after I drop it into itunes nothing happens. Is there a way to solve this I am running XP on a PC. The file is an audiobook in MP3 format and runs absolutely fine on Windows Media Player. Itunes even changed the files icon to the Itunes icon but it doesnt respond to it even when I double click on the file to play the file. The file does have two languages in it- I mean its a learning spanish file so theres english and spanish.

I have an ipod nano (the older version) and everything was working fine with iTunes and everything until our computer crashed and i needed to take it in to be fixed. Well the place i took it to ended up completely wiping out all programs on my computer in order to fix it. So i re-installed iTunes and everything seemed to be working until i went to update my ipod and it said that for some reason over a hundred of my songs were no longer valid on my ipod an it ended up deleting them off my ipod, however they are still in my library. Do you know of any way that i can get those songs in my library back on my ipod?? (i already tried to update it again to see if it would work, but it didnt) thanks so much!

Alma, you need to have Apple's iTunes program running on your computer when you hook up your iPod. That lets you synchronize music and "eject" the iPod when you're done so the "do not disconnect" message goes away! You can grab a copy of the software for free at

Mac, yes you can. If you're on a PC, go to download.com and grab a copy of "ipodcopy" from there, and if you're on a Mac, get "Senuti" from versiontracker.com. I just bought an iPod (30GB; video) and I couldn't figure out how to put songs on it, so I decided on burning discs, then just putting them on the iPod. Well, I'm pretty much kinda stupid sometimes, and the new iTunes (7) confused me wayyy much. Then, I found the sync button, and it's SO MUCH EASIER THAN THE CD TRANSFERING. Just download songs from limewire (or something), drag them from the folder that they're in and into the iTunes library, then hit "sync" when you click your iPod's name(go to the music tab, and make sure that you have it set to manually editing your songs.) hello! my ipod has a problem! i got this ipod as a gift from a friend but it has her name on it! how do i put my name on it? and also when i connect it to the computer... it says charging but i want to put my songs on it and not charge it! please help cause i feel like breaking it right now! its stressing me out

It is possible to load songs on your iPod using WinAmp. I do it. Why? Because I hate iTunes.
Just open the media library and choose Portables -> Ipod, you'll see the songs on your iPod (Don't forget to plug it in first). You can add songs to the iPod directly from the playlist by right clicking them and then choosing: sent to > iPod.

I thought I was doing everything right -- downloaded itunes, then put the CD I wanted to load into the ipod into my CD rom place, then plugged the ipod into the computer, and it would sync into the ipod. Seemed to work fine. When I went to use the ipod, most of the songs play strangely (bummer, I have loaded 2000 on the ipod now) -- they are jumbled, or they skip, or are sped up from normal, like twice as fast. Any clue how I fix this? When I play the songs from on the computer, using the computer and iTunes, they sound fine. I have that ipod that holds 20,000 songs capability....plenty of space, etc. Thanks in advance for your help.

Hey, i just got my new iPod Video (80BG) today, and i just wanted to add that for you people who say that when they connect their iPod to their computer and it doesn't say anything on the screen (pc screen), try going to your "My Computer" program. and your iPod option thing will be there because when ever i connected my iPod it never displayed anything on the main screen about it coming on so i went into "My Computer" and it was always there. I neeed help!! I have a 4GB ipod nano. I downloaded my music with no trouble, but right after the download, the ipod ceased responding. My computer says it doesn't recognize the ipod. All the ipod does is switch back and forth from the Apple icon to a blank screen. This is my second ipod doing the exact same thing so I'm sure it's me doing something wrong. I am running Windows XP. The ipod does not show in iTunes. Can I do the entire process over? How?

The reason I asked, is because everytime I downloaded a cd to the iPod, I deleted the songs from the library. okayy soo I have a MAJOR ipod PROBLEM, which I would love to here the answer too. So I have a pink nano 4gb ipod; whenever I plug it into the computer it charges but itunes does not connect it; so i can't download songs onto it; and I can't get a new ipod; which sucks. I just got an ipod from a friend and she put some songs on it for me. Now I'm trying to put my own music on it from my cd collection. I see it on my playlist but when i try to sync them on the ipod it says it can only be connected to one library at a time and gives me the option to ERASE AND SYNC or CANCEL. If I erase and sync, does this mean that the music already on it will be erased and if so is there a way around this?

hi, i download music using bearshare, they upgraded so i went from having the old version to the new one. my ipod had no problems downloading music from the old bearshare and then converting to my itunes. the new version will not convert to itunes it states it is not the correct format. i followed all ways to switch formats, but it will not work at all. it seems to be blocked. my ipod only recognizes itunes. can you help me?

I would just like to help all the troubled people with a Apple iPod nano that is 2GB, like mine.

I thought I couldn't do it. But, I forgot that I didn't have some stuff downloaded.

Does your iPod say "do not dissconect" and you don't thank it is doing anything?
Well it might not be doing anything at all...

Okay first step
Go to www.itunes.com an it should redierect you to www.apple.com/itunes/overview/ look on your right and you should see in blue Download Now

2nd step:
Click download now

3rd step:
Let the downloading procces begin and follow there steps, If somthing comes up staten to let itunes organize it self click yes, let the itunes do everything on its on.

4th step:
Buy cheap music from walmart.com and then if u followed step 3 music should add to itunes.
Oh yeah and make sure your computer restarts after downloading itunes, or it will not run properly.

5th step: Plug-in your iPod and you need to look up and You will see something in under itunes logo saying syncing do not discconect Copying files
Example
Copying file songs 1-87

if you have 1-100songs let the syncing procces stay on for about 1hour and then look down screen where your internet conection is and you should see a remove safely, always use it to remove your iPod becuase Your iPod and computer are talking.

This should work, if not try it again. if still not work im sorry

What do you do if you can't find your ipod? Plus , if you can only get rid of the songs by wiping them all off, there's no point. Just don't listen to them!!!!!

i dont know how 2 put music on my mp3 player without burning a cd

I bought my ipod 80gb black video g5 a few days ago. I ran up itunes, the first time everything ran smoothly. It connected and the music/video clips were transferred. The problem arose when;

1) Today I decided to add a few more video clips. I load these video clips onto itunes.

2) I connect the ipod, itunes opens. I press sync. For a long while, perhaps 2-3 min it says at the top of itunes "Syncing ipod - do not disconnect." Then out of the blue comes a pop-up error message saying "The ipod [the name of my ipod] cannot be synced. The required disc not found." And the synching did not take place. Everything remained the same on my ipod. I still have the 11gb of music I put on it earlier, but nothing from the itunes added to it.

3) At this point I exit itunes. Open it up again. However now my ipod has dissappeared and is no longer shown on the itunes. Now sure if this is normal or not.

4) I reboot. I connect the ipod again. Itunes starts. This time I tick "enable disc usage" however the end result is the same. I get the same error message again

Hi. I just got an Ipod shuffle from my dad as an early b-day present. I got back to my mom's, downloaded itunes, and tried plugging in my Ipod. But, itunes doesn't recongnize it. So we tried it on my stepdad's computer ang it reconized it. But, it's his work computer and we can't download Itunes. I really want to put some songs on it. its not hard
all you have to do is
install Itunes from itunes and connet your ipod touch to the PC
and it will say to call it a name
call it whatever and then you`ll see music in the sidebar just below ipod
click on that and drag music
(remember you can`t put on wma songs so you have to convert them)
if you have a song like that you have to click on file on itunes and add file to library, now it says this song is a wma do you want to convert it to acc say yes
NOTE acc can go on ipod so can mp3
now you have to wait when it finishes and you have to go to my music the folder
and then you have too click on itunes
then itunes music and then you`ll see the alburn name of the song you converted if it has no name it will be Unknown Alburn click on that then you`ll see the song,
then go to the song menu below the ipod name,
this is where all your songs on your ipod are so you drag the song onto that and you have a song.
to get an app you need wi-fi so you goto settings wi-fi turn on and if you see a wireless connect to it and then open the app store and you can download a app for example a free app
NOTICE: you need a apple store account............
Now you have too go on your computer open up Itunes and click on store on the top and click on create account do that put in your email and password this will be your apple store account now you have to say you agree with terms and conditions and then you either put in a cridet card or a apple card next you get a email then you can buy whatever you want

I manage my ipod & itunes manually, many songs & movies in my library show that no entry, circle w/ line in it, blocking me from moving it when I drag them to my playlists. These are all items that have been on my ipod at one time before so I don't understand. Also when I try auto sync these same items still will not go to ipod. They play fine in my library though. I wrote you about an hour ago. Same prob new things to add. I manually manage my itunes acct. When I drag movies, etc. from library to my ipod movie playlist it looks good, appears to be working. But when I go to the list they are not there. They play perfect on itunes & have at one time been on my ipod & played. They accidentally got deleted. Okay so I have an iPOD. I know how to sync songs, blah, blah, blah. But I recently found my old mp3/4 player, and found all these awesome songs I used to listen to. How do I get these songs, from my old mp3, onto my iPod? It seems as if Windows can only copy stuff from CDs, not actual players. When I plug in my old mp3 device, and click view contents, I don't see any of the songs in the folder, and nothing shows up in player.

I have a new mini and must have missed the option to sync my mini. So when plugged in it doesn't show up in Itunes even though I gave it a unique name. How can I get back to that option? When plugged in I get a message that says do not disconnect and I cannot get the unit to accept any commands? Thanks

For those of you finding that iTunes wipes out all your old songs when you try to add new ones, look more closely at your song management options. You might want to move to 'manage songs manually' and then explicitly drag and drop music out of your iTunes library onto the iPod icon when it's hooked up, rather than have it automatically sync.

Linwood, I'm not sure what's going on with your Mini: if you hook up your iPod then start up iTunes and wait a minute or two, does it show up in iTunes or not? There is a configuration option that lets you specify whether you want iTunes to automatically launch or not when you plug in an iPod: maybe that's what you want to specify in the future?

I have a number of Audio books in my i-Tunes library. When I connect my i-pod all the books are automatically downloaded onto the i-pod as it synchronises . Is it possible to simply transfer from i-tunes to i-pod selected items only and if so how would I do it?

Eric, the iPod shuffle is a bit of a different beast. How are you plugging it into your computer? Try this: quit iTunes, plug in your iPod Shuffle, then launch iTunes. Should see the device.

Herij, one of the frustrating things about the iPod is that it has to be "paired" with a single computer. That computer is its "master" and if you hook it up to a different computer, iTunes will want to "pair" it with the new computer, which involves wiping it and starting over. A pain in the booty, for sure. No great solution, you just need to pick a single computer and have that be the paired master for your iPod, then any music you want to add you should just copy onto that computer (via email, file transfer, USB thumb drive, etc) before you sync.

Shelley, sort of yes, but the USB will let you connect your iPod to your computer, but you still have the issue of getting content onto your computer in the first place, so you can put it on the iPod. Make sense?

hey, my shuffle has 2 gigs, and 1.61g is taken up by "other". when i try to erase it, a message pops up telling me that whatever's on "other" is still being used by the computer.how can i get that used 1.61 gigs off?

Alex, sounds like you might have enabled "disk mode" on your Shuffle, so that iTunes is reserving most of the space for data, rather than music. See this page for more info: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1478?viewlocale=en_US

Frank, you can't use WMP to work with an iPod. You need to use iTunes or you'll be outta luck. Try again. :-)

Payton, you'll lose what you have on the iPod, but click on "Restore" when it's hooked up to your Mac and it'll wipe it and reconfigure it to be Mac friendly.

Actually, you certainly do not need to use iTunes to put music on your iPod. You can you use any other music/vid converter; windows xp, media monkey, etc...

Patricia, sometimes iTunes isn't set as the default program for an iPod when plugged in. Easily sidestepped: launch iTunes THEN plug in your iPod and give it 30 seconds or so...

Kaelyn, it doesn't matter how your iPod was loaded with music. To make your life simple, you need to "pair" it with a single computer. When you do that, it'll wipe the iPod clean and restore it. Beforehand, run a third-party app like iPodCopy or Senuti and pull all the music that you want to keep off the device.

Jorgiana, you'll need to download all the music from your iPod onto your computer (try Senuti or ipodcopy, both third party apps), import all the music into your iTunes library, then let iTunes do a restore on the iPod. Once that's done resync with all the music and let it copy everything back on. A pain, but it'll solve the problem.

AdRtist, plug your iPod into a computer running iTunes (ideally the computer your'e going to always be using with the iPod to manage its content) and choose "Restore". It'll wipe it clean.

Heather, you do realize that memberareasite is an illegal site and everything you would get off it is in violation of copyright and licensing laws and puts you in a position where you could theoretically be sued by the MPAA or RIAA? More importantly, it also defrauds the artists that create the content and means that they can't afford to create that next album, audio book or movie? I'd skip it and work with your own music CDs or the Apple iTunes Store, where you pay, but where the artists are compensated AND you have the license for the content.

Hi Dave! I just bought a new ipod nano gen 5 16g. I currently own a Nano 2nd gen 4g that I want to send to my sister in another state. Will she be able to plug it in to her computer and authorize it? Or will she need to have my password? I don't want to share my itunes account with her. One other question. I accidently deleted the itunes program on my desktop.
