How do I get rid of Windows Security Alerts?

Dave, I have a firewall through my router. Apparently Windows does not recognize this as I keep getting messages that say my computer may be at risk since I have no firewall. There is a "Windows Security Alerts" icon in my taskbar that I cannot remove. Can you tell me how to rid myself of this pest?

Dave's Answer:

What you're seeing is an artifact of Windows trying to be too smart about security (boy, that's not a sentence I thought I'd ever be typing! Indeed, after watching how busy my antivirus and anti-spyware utilities are on my WinXP box, the very phrase "Windows security" seems like an oxymoron. But I digress!)

Since you don't want to use the firewall on your Windows PC itself, you need to convince WinXP that you know what you're doing and that it's safe for you to not have the PC-based firewall running.

This can be done by choosing Start -> Control Panels -> Security Center. Then click on the "Firewall" option, click on "Recommendations", and, finally, check off the option "I have a firewall solution that I'll monitor myself". Verify that's what you really want to do and you should never see that pesty Windows Security Alert message again.

On the other hand, I suggest that you still might want to have the Windows firewall running even though it's redundant. Just set it to "loose monitoring" and you'll have yet another little boost to the security of your system.

Either way, this should eliminate that problem!

Just search in the Windows help system for Security Alerts to get the appropriate instructions for controlling them on your particular system. Note that system tray icons usually provide useful options when right-clicked (e.g., to open the Security Center in this case). Many similar problems are solvable by these methods.

from: http://www.hardwaregeeks.com/board/archive/index.php/t-18511.html

1. " start > run > services.msc > Security Center... doubleclick... Startup type: "Disabled" "

2. also from that page: "security center is in services but if you cant find it in the services list

go to start>run> MSCONFIG
Services Tab
scroll to the bottom"

3. Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services ( XP Home )

4. see also:

"I turned off the Security Center notifications and checked the box that tells it that I have a firewall and do not need monitoring. Unfortunately, a reboot seems to reset these settings and the pestering would begin again. Finally, I had to turn off the Security Center permanantly. I certainly don't recommend that anyone do this unless absolutely necessary, but if you find that you must, here's how to do it.

Go to Start, click Run, and type in "services.msc" without the quotes. Scroll down until you see "Security Center" and click to open the Security Center Properties box. Under "Service status," click "Stop" and under "Startup type" select "Disabled." The next time you reboot the Security Center will be gone."

thank google

Hi Have, I have a question. Every time I click the internet explorer button and open the internet, the Security Center page comes up instead of my home page. And when I go to internet options to change it back to my home page, it still says that my home page (msn.com) is my home page. But when i click the home button, msn.com does not show up, but the Security Center page comes up. PLease tell me how to remove this!

Looks like you can just do the following:

Start > Control Panel > Security Center

On the left pane, look for "Change the way Security Center alerts me" and you can uncheck all those buttons. The little icon on the bottom of the taskbar should go away.

thanks for the lead on turning off the pesky alerts. it was a bit different with my version of winXP pro SP2. in the security center window, on the left side under 'resources' you can click on 'change the way security center alerts me' and uncheck all 3 options for firewall, updates, and virus protection.

Nice site answered my question clearly but at the moment my pet project is trying to make Norton GHost behave. I am running Ver10 at the moment but I think my problem is common to all versions. When Target Disk is full Ghost should delete oldest backup.have used google extensively but as yet have not come up with a definitive answer.
