How do I get rid of Windows Security Alerts?

Dave, I have a firewall through my router. Apparently Windows does not recognize this as I keep getting messages that say my computer may be at risk since I have no firewall. There is a "Windows Security Alerts" icon in my taskbar that I cannot remove. Can you tell me how to rid myself of this pest?

Dave's Answer:

What you're seeing is an artifact of Windows trying to be too smart about security (boy, that's not a sentence I thought I'd ever be typing! Indeed, after watching how busy my antivirus and anti-spyware utilities are on my WinXP box, the very phrase "Windows security" seems like an oxymoron. But I digress!)

Since you don't want to use the firewall on your Windows PC itself, you need to convince WinXP that you know what you're doing and that it's safe for you to not have the PC-based firewall running.

This can be done by choosing Start -> Control Panels -> Security Center. Then click on the "Firewall" option, click on "Recommendations", and, finally, check off the option "I have a firewall solution that I'll monitor myself". Verify that's what you really want to do and you should never see that pesty Windows Security Alert message again.

On the other hand, I suggest that you still might want to have the Windows firewall running even though it's redundant. Just set it to "loose monitoring" and you'll have yet another little boost to the security of your system.

Either way, this should eliminate that problem!

on this computer there is no "Security Center" xp under internet options there is not a button labled "I have a firewall solution that I'll monitor myself".

NOW WHAT? HOW DO I GET RID OF THAT NASTY POPUP?

Just search in the Windows help system for Security Alerts to get the appropriate instructions for controlling them on your particular system. Note that system tray icons usually provide useful options when right-clicked (e.g., to open the Security Center in this case). Many similar problems are solvable by these methods.

from: http://www.hardwaregeeks.com/board/archive/index.php/t-18511.html

1. " start > run > services.msc > Security Center... doubleclick... Startup type: "Disabled" "

2. also from that page: "security center is in services but if you cant find it in the services list

go to start>run> MSCONFIG
Services Tab
scroll to the bottom"

3. Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services ( XP Home )

4. see also:

http://thespoke.net/blogs/ogman/archive/2004/10/20/48230.aspx

"I turned off the Security Center notifications and checked the box that tells it that I have a firewall and do not need monitoring. Unfortunately, a reboot seems to reset these settings and the pestering would begin again. Finally, I had to turn off the Security Center permanantly. I certainly don't recommend that anyone do this unless absolutely necessary, but if you find that you must, here's how to do it.

Go to Start, click Run, and type in "services.msc" without the quotes. Scroll down until you see "Security Center" and click to open the Security Center Properties box. Under "Service status," click "Stop" and under "Startup type" select "Disabled." The next time you reboot the Security Center will be gone."

thank google

Hi Have, I have a question. Every time I click the internet explorer button and open the internet, the Security Center page comes up instead of my home page. And when I go to internet options to change it back to my home page, it still says that my home page (msn.com) is my home page. But when i click the home button, msn.com does not show up, but the Security Center page comes up. PLease tell me how to remove this!

Looks like you can just do the following:

Start > Control Panel > Security Center

On the left pane, look for "Change the way Security Center alerts me" and you can uncheck all those buttons. The little icon on the bottom of the taskbar should go away.

1. " start > run > services.msc > Security Center... doubleclick... Startup type: "Disabled" "

Perfect. This was driving me nuts. Thank you Dave & Jose.

thanks for the lead on turning off the pesky alerts. it was a bit different with my version of winXP pro SP2. in the security center window, on the left side under 'resources' you can click on 'change the way security center alerts me' and uncheck all 3 options for firewall, updates, and virus protection.

Nice site answered my question clearly but at the moment my pet project is trying to make Norton GHost behave. I am running Ver10 at the moment but I think my problem is common to all versions. When Target Disk is full Ghost should delete oldest backup.have used google extensively but as yet have not come up with a definitive answer.

- Virus protection is out of date

Open your Norton product to resolve these issues.

[checked box] To prevent duplicate security status alerts, use my existing Norton product alers and turn off redundant Windows Security Center alerts.

windows starts. as soon as everything loads, a popup "windows security alert" comes up. all other programs go into background and become invisible. I can't close this popup and the message is all in Russian or Greek (not sure which one). I am not able to navigate to windows or any of the files or programs. guess it is similar to the situation with both the users above who posted the message on Oct 7, 2009. Please help.

how do i prevent window sercurity alrets

Posted by: arnold at December 5, 2009 5:32 PM

We should not rule out the possibility that this message is not an authentic Windows Message! I would recommend that the user go to the websites of various antivirus manufacturers and try out their free malware tools. The previously linked site offers an excellent one. More and more often we are seeing fake Av alerts and other malware injections coming via doctored Windows system messages. Try this out regardless, because even if this is not the cause of your problem, it is possible that you may be unknowingly infected.

I had Stopzilla and as soon as i refused to renew the registration (like minutes later)I have problems. Every time I visited a site, like my trusted bank, a security pop up appears saying the site should not be trusted. This never happened when I had the Stopzilla software so whats this about - very strange that all of a sudden I have problems. What has the Stopzilla programme done as a parting gift!(to try and get me to renew?)

I don't want to spam here but I think the user may be talking about fake security alert. Using malwarebytes antimalware can remove the fake security alert.

dave . . . just a suggx . . . you could complement your article with a few wisely chosen screen-shots.

Don't want to scare anyone but I had "Windows Security Alert" a couple of months ago and it was a virus.Started by blocking options in AVG Anti Virus and Windows firewall(buttons greyed out).Wouldn't allow Malwarebytes to run or update even in safe mode. Eventually started to affect my documents folder.I tried doing a system recovery and got a couple of days of what appeared to be normal operation and then it popped up again.
Only way to get rid of it was to burn what I could to disc(music, video files, as virus wouldn't affect dvd player or cd player.Once berned I never play them in the computer anyway),wipe the hard drive and re-install Windows XP from my restore disc.
