Just go to "My Computer" and navigate your way to the appropriate folder. The program that shows you your computer information *is* My Computer. Make sense?

In general, if you delete a file or files but the space doesn't return, make sure that you're emptying your trashcan / recycle bin on your PC: It might be marked for deletion but still sitting on the Memory Stick.

Duke, please note that without adding some special software the only Windows OS that I know is compatible with the Sony PSP is Windows XP. There is a driver you can download for Windows 98, however, but while I can point to it, I haven't actually tried it because I no longer have a Win98 system in my office.

You probably didn't do anything wrong, Veronica. The key is to realize that all of the music you've downloaded onto your Sony PSP is "hidden" in the "Memory Stick" entry. When you go to MUSIC you'll see "Memory Stick" as the only option. *CLICK ON IT* and you'll see all your music shown.

I have a problem of copying my MP3 files into memory stick duo.
I created a MUSIC folder under PSP folder, and when I copied my MP3 file and try to "paste" into MUSIC folder, there is always an error message that says: cannot copy file... cannot find the correct path...
What do I do with this problem? Am I allow to copy the MP3 music that I downloaded from the web?

Cathy, if you double-click on the MP3 files on your PC, do they play?

Yes, if I double click on my mp3 files they can play the whole song without any corruption on Windows Media Player or iTune.
Do you think the problem might be the data rate for the mp3 files?

Cathy, try just DRAGGING your music files into it, it worked for me. If it says corrupted data you might not have formatted your memory stick, if you do so, find somewhere to copy it to because it deletes all of your memory.

dave i am only a child but i have done alot of what you have said to do so all the music i want is on the folder you told me to put it on to but can you tell me what to do again anyway but my main quesion is when it is on the folder how do i get it on my sony psp

However, DRAGGING my mp3 file is not solving the "corrupted data" problem. My file can only play for 30 seconds.

When you disconnect your psp from the PC, do you click on safely remove hardware then on usb then sony psp?

Also for Cathy,
I think that you have to right click the icon on the bottom with a green arrow and select 'Safely Remove Hardware'. Then select the one that says USB mass storage device, then click on Sony PSP USB device and click on close.

I finally found what caused the problem after I rang up to PSP technical support center yesterday.
It is the hardware problem, USB cable, although the connection is fine through the cable, but that PSP usage USB cable cannot transfer data correctly (the professional said that is the design problem for the cable).
Once I tried to change the USB cable, the problem solved!!! (curse that cable~~~)

Well, finally I can store the files in my PSP, I am happy about that.

i have a solution to some peoples problems.
when you put a film on your psp in the MP_ROOT and the other one and it does not show up on your psp e.g "no video files". simply rename your file to M4V00001.mp4 then the next file M4V00002.mp4 and so on i found this works.and the files then play on your psp.

this was done on psp V2.00 on a 128mb duo

I don't know that there's a backup capability from Sony. I find it curious that you'd be having the problem you have, though. Are games actually checking specific firmware versions?

Garrett, I believe that the default format the WMP uses is incompatible with the PSP. The PSP can only work with MP3 format music files at this point, as far as I know. I'm planning to write about how to get music from WMP to PSP soon, stay tuned!

You should understand that there are lots of music formats in use including:
MP3 - DeFacto standard, commercial licence
OGG - Open standard, free to use
FLAC - Open standard, free to use
AAC - Standard, Commercial licence
WMA - Proprietary, commecial licence
ATRAC - Proprietary, commercial licence

(Note that the difference between proprietary and standards based is subtle. I have made the distinction between formats promoted and supported primarily by a single manufacturer, and those promoted and supported by standards bodies or communities of interest.

Also note that commercial licence means you pay extra for using it in some way).

The PSP will only (currently) support MP3 and ATRAC formats. MP3 is the important one. Apple's iTunes doesn't natively support MP3 (it uses AAC by default). Windows Media Player by default uses the highly proprietary WMA format. You have to tell it to use MP3 specifically. This is very important to do.

WMA in particular should be avoided at all costs. If you use this format you will find it is incompatible with most digital music players and you may have to re-rip it. Conversion is possible but degrades the music files.

Always use MP3 for compressed music and you won't go far wrong.

Certainly that is what you need to support music on the PSP.

Rather than create specific folders yourself, try letting the PSP format your Memory Stick and you'll find that the folders are automatically created as needed.

i finally figured out how to upload mp3s on my own, but it won't let me put more than 6 songs into my "music" folder. A messages pops up saying "drive disk is full. please insert new disk to continue." I just got my psp, so all I have are those 6 songs. no photos, games, videos, etc. And the 6 songs are not long (3-4 min). Why can't I put more songs?!

Because, Bobbi, you're out of space. You need more space on your Memory Stick if you want to download more music. I have a 512MB card, for example, and it'll hold a half-dozen CDs...

but how can i be out of space if i JUST got my psp? all i have on it are those 6 songs, and there's no way that memory card can only hold 6 songs. it even tells me that i still have space on the card.

The average song takes up about 2-3MB of space on your Memory Card. If you have the default card, it's a 32MB which means it has an effective available space of maybe 27 or 28MB, and that's assuming that you don't have any saved games on it. That being the case, you can easily take 27 / 3 and find out that your rough song limit should be nine songs *if the card is empty*.

they really rip you off with the default memory card.
so i had to buy a usb cord and, now, a half-way decent memory card. . .

How can I copy images from PC to Cybershot S90 Memory Stick PRO?

I have taken a thousands of pictures using my Sony Cybershot DSC-S90. Everyday I copy/transfer these pictures from my memory stick to my PC (i.e. keep backups) and erase all data in my memory stick (sometimes formatting it).

Now, I would like to select some special pictures in my local PC (the pictures that were taken using this DSC S90 camera) and copy these into my memory stick so that I can carry my camera and view/share these selective pictures with my relatives (i.e. by connecting the Camera to their TV).

So, how can I copy some selective images from my PC to my external memory stick? Is there any special software I can use for this purpose? My OS is Windows XP. I tried with Picture Package, ImageMixer tools that came with the CD but these did not fullfill my purpose. I just tried with simple copy-pasted from windows explorer, but when I try to view this from my camera, it says "No files in this Folder".

Whats to do? Please, give me some suggestion.

Here's the fix:

You need to provide both power and a USB connection. If you are getting an USB error, and you're running XP, it's because you're not getting enough power through the single USB cable.

Get a second dedicated USB cable, like one for a camera and then use the PSP cable to provide the power.

Combine the two and it works perfectly!

I have a 1 GB memory card for my PSP, it is compatible with my PSP and I have listened to a track of music on it and used GTA gamesaves, but when i save a game on burnout legends, and try to load it, it says load failed, the data is corrupted, what does this mean?

Jared posted several comments ago to delete the corrupted data and go to your source program, open the files, select "save as..." and browse to the relevant PSP folder and save them that way. This works perfectly...I couldnt save certain pics, but others would...after trying Jareds' method all save well :) Thanks Jared, and I imagine it would work with the files not showing up at All either...the key seems to be to NOT drag and drop...

Well, "Boop", it depends on how big a Memory Stick you put into the PSP. The default 32MB card is barely enough for a single CD (each song is usually 2-3MB) but I have a 512MB Stick that's plenty big enough for 20-30 of my favorite albums, if I were so inclined.

I have tried all the things that you have suggested but my PSP still says data corrupted. I dont know if i have to buy a new USB cable or what?

Mitchel, if you're seeing corrupted data, first test it on your computer: if you double click no the file, does it work properly? Then you might try plugging your PSP into a different USB port on your computer to see if that works better and, yes, I have heard stories of people who have bad USB cables and fixed corrupt data problems by simply buying another one.

Chris, most likely you either have the music "hidden" in your "Memory Stick" folder under MUSIC: find it, and click on the "X" button to see what's inside. If that's still empty too, then either you have files in the wrong place or are sending over the wrong format files. Note that files in AAC and WMA format generally don't work (theoretically the latest firmware update allows you to play Windows Media Player Audio (WMA) files, but I haven't heard from anyone who has gotten that to work...)

Hi Dave, we have just purchased a PSP and are trying to download music files to it. So far we can successfully :

connect to PSP from computer
can create folders in the music directory and see them on the PSP
we can copy music files onto PSP folders......BUT on the PSP the folder says 0 Tracks.

Is this something to do with the USB cable ? Or other suggestions ?

I've followed your instructions (and Sony's) for moving mp3 files to my PSP. The files initially show up in the MUSIC folder, but nothing plays on the PSP. When I go back to view the MUSIC folder, the files are gone. However, the available space on the memory stick is still reduced. I have W2000 on my PC, but I wouldn't think that would matter for moving files between the systems. Any suggestions?

Andrew, if you reformat your Memory Stick you *will* lose your saved games, yes. Also, to get more than six songs onto your PSP you'll need to buy a bigger Memory Stick: the default is pretty tiny if you're going to use it for anything real...

JT, if you're seeing corrupted data, you might well have a bad USB cable. I have heard from more than one person that can be a problem.

Thanks for the help Dave, just needed direction as to what the exact folder names were. Also, I had more luck getting the photos to recognize after cycling the PSP power after disconnecting the USB cable. Dunno why, as it should have just read them real time. Thanks again.

To all that are having the problem with music showing up as "Corrupt Data", here is the reason:

Although the PSP manual says that the MUSIC folder is not case sensitive, it actually is. The folder must be named in ALL CAPS. If it is not, the PSP does not recognize it and shows it as "Corrupt Data".

If your PC is not allowing you to name the folder in all caps, open an Explorer window (or MY Computer).....go to View then Folder Options......Click the View tap, and at the top of the Advanced Settings window, under Files and Folders, make sure "Allow all uppercase names" is checked.

This should solve the problem.

For PSP owners that are using Windows 98, you can connect the PSP to your PC. Here is a link to a site where you can download a driver for a Vivitar V3615 digital camera.....believe it or not, it will work for the PSP because it is a mass storage device driver. I downloaded it and it worked for my PSP and my Creative Zen Nano MP3 Player.

I'm sorry to report to both of you, Antonio and Brandon, that I don't know of any way you can get Windows ME to work with the Sony PSP device.

It says I don't have the driver of the device, can I download a driver or do I have to buy it? Also, if I do have to download it, where do I download it from?

If I already have the USB cable and everything is plugged in and the thing is under unknown device what do I do? What if it isn't connecting? Also, since these things are true, how do I get the driver installed?

Matt, you're putting it in the wrong place. The music files should be put in PSP \ MUSIC not in the MP_ROOT folder.

I am having troubles getting MP4 video onto my psp. I can do it through PSP video 9 software when I need to convert it, but when I move a file with the name M4V10014.MP4 thats already in MP4 format to the 100MNV01 folder on my PSP, it says it is an unsupported format under the video tab on my psp. A good additional article to read if you're having problems with transferring music onto your PSP is this:

Photos are quite similar, and JPEG is a particular format for a graphics file that's photo-friendly. It stands for "Joint Photographic Experts Group", though I'm sure you don't care about that. Just about any graphics program should be able to produce JPEG format files (denoted by .JPG or .JPEG) that'll work fine on the PSP.

itunes music to psp compatible music. all u do edit the music file from "blank".m4a to "blank".mp4 psp is compatible with mp4 and mp3 but itunes has software that causes itunes .mp3 data to be corrupted so mp4 is the way to go plus the music quality is better

Protected files are protected, jt2, because they're under the control of a Digital Rights Management system like iTunes. As far as I know, there's no easy way to "pry them loose" so you can copy them onto other devices.

Yes, my PSP is working fine but does a windows 2000 work for putting music onto the PSP

Unfortunately, I don't believe that Windows 2000 supports the Sony PSP as far as I know. I haven't heard of anyone getting that combination to work successfully...

I figured it out PPL. You have to create the MUSIC folder in the PSP folder. After I did that the music showed up and played. The same should be done with Pictures, create the folder PHOTOS in the PSP folder. Hope this helps all.

I really don't believe that's true, Chris. If I can put a CD in my car player or home stereo then what's the problem with putting it onto my Playstation Portable device so I can enjoy it on an airplane? That's "fair use".

Jose, you might be running a version of Windows that doesn't support the PSP, unfortunately. It's really designed for Windows XP, sorry to say.

Louie, I'd counsel that you actually reformat your PSP's memory stick with the PSP itself (rather than your PC) then try copying the music into the new MUSIC folder. Beware, though, that you'll lose all your game saves by reformatting, unfortunately. See:

You must make the MUSIC folder on youre psp within the psp folder already there and transfer the mp3's thru to that inner Music folder.

Eddie, I don't think you can do that, just as you can't transfer iPod videos from the iTunes store to your PSP. The programs just don't export the video in a usable format. Sorry

Eddie, you are reading too much into my comment. I said that you can't copy the music videos from the Apple iTunes Music Store onto your PSP because of the digital rights management, but if you have your own CDs / DVDs with music videos on them, you can theoretically copy them onto your PSP, though it's not easy. Sandra, you need to format the PSP memory stick for all the necessary folders to be created. Be warned that it will delete any game saves you may have, but it'll get your Music folder in the right place! :-)

Louie, it's possible you have a bad USB cable. Try using a different one if you can. I have heard from some folk that switching cables instantly fixes "corrupt transfer" problems.

Let me try to make this clear and concise. I bought a 2GB high speed memory stick for the psp. It works fine up to 1 GB with music, movies, photos, and saved games. It definitely saves up to 2 GB, but anything that gets saved over the remaining 1 GB becomes corrupted data on the psp, but works fine on the computer. Any solutions or tips?

Hi everyone, I have been pulling my hair out trying to put movies on my psp. I followed all the steps provided by severel different websites and they all were the same. I created a "MP_ROOT" folder on the root menu and a "100MNV01" folder inside that one. I used "PSP Max Media Manager" to convert the files into "MPEG-4" format and even got the "THM" file. I renamed them both. "M4V00001.MP4" and "M4V00001.THM" and unplugged the PSP from my PC and I went to the video menu and it said that there are no videos. The files are definatly on the memory stick because it is taking up space. I am using a 1GB San Disk version. PLEASE HELP ME!!!!!

i'm running psp firmware 2.50 and i recently tried to backup my save files for my games so that i could reformat my memory stick, but when i try and copy the files back to the psp, it pops up with that "error copying files" error and then my psp disappears from my comp until i disconnect and reconnect it. I created the photo folder, dragged a couple of jpegs to the folder, but it still says unsupported file type. I double checked on properties to make sure they were jpegs, and the PSP recognizes the same number of files I dragged to the photo folder. Stumped.

Yo, Everytime I connect my psp to my computer, on my psp it says usb connection, but for some reason the computer isnt picking it up. I have windows 95 I think. Hey Theresa did you use block capitals for your 'Music' folder? It should be MUSIC and not Music.
That's what I did and my MP3s play fine, haven't tried other formats yet though.. :D

Well you'll need to install the device driver for the PSP to be recognised by your PC.
I use Win98 and installed the driver before going to 'My Computer' which is where the 'Removable device' is located..

I used my usb cord to put my pics on my psp after it was safe to take out the usb cord i wanted to see my pics.The pics were not on a camera the were already stored ta the computer.And wen i took out the usb cord my psp was freakin out and it would show me my pics of course i am going ta sue the computer company. i have a cannon camera will the cable for that work for my psp? and what is the cheapest cord for that you have found?

In the PSP 3.60 version the "PHOTO" folder has to be put inside the SYSTEM folder and not in the ROOT like the "MUSIC" and "VIDEO" folders. This is due to the latest version having compatability with Digital Cameras.To find the PSP on your computer first make a connection with USB cable and the computer then open "My Computer" and look under Devices with Removable Storage (E:) or (F:). Hope this helps others.

If you've seen this before apologies but I thought I'd pass it on......

I tried to download some photos onto my nephew's new style PSP at the weekend. I followed the instructions in the PSP manual to make a folder called "PICTURE" for all the photos. When I dragged and dropped the photos the PSP could not see them. It seemed odd that the PSP screen said "PHOTO" yet the manual wanted a different name for the folder so I changed it to "PHOTO" and needless to say it worked....this is a clearly a typo and may be causing confusion. Perhaps you might want to put it in the advice above. Cheers dp

hey dave how come everytime i copy a picture on to my pictures file on my psp it says corrupted file?

none of your stuff answered any of me effin questions it still wont put pictures on my psp and ive been doin this for 3 1/2 hours now

my PC just says that it has recognized an uknown device when i connect the PSP with my USB. does anybody know why and how to fix this problem?

yeah but i dont have a clue! i went on youtube aswell to see if they any video to show how to download photos... but i still dont know what to do. when i copy it on to the psp i think that it had worked and i eject it useing the computer not by hand and still nothing comes up.........when i press the triangle button on photo on my psp it says something like receive, but when i press that it does nothing and it just says 'connecting please wait'....and when i wait it goes on for hours and hours and hours........i think that i will just give up all together. but if you know what i should do than could you please email me?

well it doesnt work fr me. u know when u put the usb cable in the pc and the opsp and click on usb connection well i did dat and i clicked on view my files then i went to psp and ther wasnt a file dat said photo so i made one and i still cant put pictures on my psp

i uploaded music from my iTunes onto my psp and it plays just fine.. in fact it even uploads the album artwork for me and everything. im just having problems with photos. i drag the pictures into the psp folder and it shows the pictures in the "pictures" category on my psp when i have it plugged in the computer to explore the files, but once i unplug the psp and turn it on, the pictures aren't there..

soo i had the music thing down for awhile and i found this while trying to learn how to view pictures on my PSP i have pictures on there but i cant view em... so i made a folder called "PHOTO" and put the images in there... and to no avail still detect 0 images, and yes they are in JPEG i made my own images via Adobe to make 100% sure...

I've been able to put music on my psp but I'm having trouble with puting photos on my psp. I've draged jpegs into the psp/photo file and see that memory has been used. However, when I go to check photo's on the psp it says there are no images. It shows the photos in the psp/photo file and I've been succesfull in adding music so what's the problem? BUT YOUR METHOD ISN'T HELPING!!!!!!!! sorry... well i went on pictures on the psp and still no pictures, and i can't download videos either, I had no troble at all with the music, but STILL NO VIDEOS OR PICTURES!!!!!!!!! Thanks to Cathy, I was having the same problem and i changed my usb cord and it worked like a charm. Thats such a B.S. reason for it not to work but at least its working now.

Folks the name for pictures folder should be "PICTURE" NOT "PHOTO". it may be in some versions. Formatting the card will automatically create all these folders.

Hi Dave, I have bought a PSP last week. I have got video, music uploaded ok but no matter how many times i try to get pictures on it they will not show on the psp. When i put the memory card in the my Sony Vaio laptop it shows the folders each as they should be called MUSIC, PHOTO, VIDEO etc and when you click into any of the photo's it says there are photo's there but when i insert memory card back into psp nothing? I have done this also by the USB lead from psp into laptop and still nothing. I have got a Sony DSLR and this memory card with pictures on shows AOK? i am i missing something here? Dave, I've tried so many times to get pictures on my PSP, but even when I try to download JPEG files onto my PSP, it doesn't appear on there. My computer says they've synced though. Am I doing something wrong?

I did everything said here. For the music it worked perfectly, but for the Photos it persists to say that I HAVE no pictures once I go to the PSP, yet there's no space left BECAUSE of my pictures. I just don't understand why they won't show up <_< Any idea what might be wrong?
