How do I get my wireless WEP password for my Sony PSP?

I have a Sony PSP and have been trying to connect to the Internet with my wireless base station, but it keeps asking for a "WEP" and I don't have a clue what that is or how I get it. Help!

Dave's Answer:

First off, let me show you how to ascertain your WEP password, then let me tell you the bad news...

I have rather an older SMC wireless access point that comes with a software package that runs on Windows XP called "EZ Connect". When I start the program up on a PC that's connected to the access point, here's what I see:

SMC EZ Connect

It's not the worlds best application - more modern wireless devices have Web-based interfaces that let you access the unit with your favorite Web browser - but it's functional. To access the WEP password, I need to actually connect to the access point, which means I need to know the AP password (which is different from the wifi password, note).

Once I'm connected, I choose Command -> Configure and here's what I see:

SMC EZ Connect: Configure

Lots of mysterious settings that I am sure I don't want to tweak, and the all-important button on the right side labeled Encryption.... That's what we want, so I click it and now see:

SMC EZ Connect: WEP

In this instance you can see that the passphrase for my wireless network is "askdavetaylor!" and that's the WEP key needed for this device. The earlier screen's SSID field showed the network name too, by the way, "WLAN".

Armed with these two pieces of information I should be able to connect to the wireless network with any wifi-enabled device, Mac, PC, Sony PSP, whatever. However, it's not always that easy, so once you've pressed "Apply", you'll see that the "Manual Entry" boxes are also filled out and those offer you a hexadecimal encrypted password too. That's useful: write the first of them down. If your device doesn't like the passphrase, try using the encrypted key instead. It'll be something like 1cf341a34c. Mac users might find that they need to prepend the "$" symbol to get an encrypted key to be accepted as a wireless password too. Lots of choices for you!

Now, having said that, I have to admit that I have never been able to get my own Sony PSP device to connect to a password-protected wireless network, even knowing all these different password entry options. I imagine some people have had success, but most of what I hear about is failure. If you can't get your PSP to work with your password-protected WEP wifi network, consider either turning off encryption (not a great idea) or scanning to see if you can find a kindly neighbor who hasn't enabled encryption on their network and borrow that connection. Many facilities including libraries and cafes offer open wireless networks too, in a pinch.

If you have had success connecting your PSP to a WEP-enabled network, please do let us know about it. Was it 64-bit or 128-bit encryption? Did you use the passphrase or the hex encrypted password?

Hope that helps you figure this out!

Since the WEP key is really a hex key, the utilities need to convert the passphrase into a hex key using some algorithm. The problem is that no two implementations use the same algorithm. What you need to do is to find out the hex equivalent and enter it instead. I have no problem connecting my PSP to my Airport Extreme using the hex equivalent. Mac users using Airport: you can get the hex equivalent by running your Airport Admin Utility, configure your base station and select "Equivalent Network Password..." from the "Base Station" menu.

where can u buy a wifi conection 4 my psp?

Dave Taylor said, on January 20, 2006 9:34 PM:

Alex, you can buy just about any 802.11b or "mixed mode" wireless access point / base station and be up and running pretty quickly. Buy.com, for example, has a wifi base station that costs only $30 after rebates. See:

http://www.buy.com/prod/Linksys_WAP11_Wireless_Access_Point_802_11b/q/loc/101/10259366.html

Generally, though, I'd recommend a wifi base station + mini-router so you can switch from a setup like PC -> cable modem or PC -> DSL modem (both via Ethernet) to PC -> wifi base station -> cable or DSL modem. With a regular wifi base station, you can't connect two cables, just one.

That means that you'd be looking at a low-end solution like this:

http://www.buy.com/prod/D_Link_DI_514_Wireless_Cable_DSL_Router_802_11b_11Mbps/q/loc/101/10339561.html

That's $53. Hope that's helpful info!

Connecting a psp to the internet through a linksys befw11s4 is easy.
64 bit encryption works and 128 bit encryption works. People have been saying 128 doesnt work, but IT DOES!! It seems people cant enter in the 26 digit number into the psp correctly and give up.

In the router:

Under basic wireless setting:
1:Turn wireless on
2:set wireless network name to whatever you want
3:set wireless channel(doesnt matter which)
4:enable wireless ssid broadcast
5:Save settings

Under Wireless security
1:Enable wireless security
2:Set security mode to WEP
3:Set your encryption level 64, or 128
4:type in pass phrase
5:click "Generate" to generate the wepkey
6:Save settings

Now, you have to set up the psp to connect to the router
( --> = then go to the right)
1:In the psp, go all the way too the left and all the way down, to Network Settings
2:Choose infrastructure mode, -->
3:Choose new connection, then name it, -->
4:Under WLAN settings, scan for your network
5:When you find your network , select it -->
6: Enter the WEP key from your router -->
7:Choose "easy" under adress settings -->
8:Check settings -->
9:Press X to save -->
10: test connection

Thats it (haha) THis DOES work. It works on mine and it works on the people who pay me to come to their houses and set it up for them. If it doesnt work for you, then try again!

Ben said, on February 11, 2006 2:59 PM:

Just make sure that your router is in g and b mode or just b (PSP does not support G) and enter the key as it appears, unlike my PC this is case sensitive and it DOES work with 128bit!

Dave Taylor said, on February 12, 2006 11:11 PM:

Hey, my Linksys router is set up basically the same as yours, MrBrosco, and I am still unable to get my PSP (with 2.5 firmware) to connect to my wireless, or any other wireless connections I've found. The wi-fi is on of course, and I've tried using all the WEP keys, and have even generated new ones a good half dozen times now and still nothing. But what more is that I can't to even unsecured networks, it always says that it has timed out or that it cant find the network. I've tried everything I've found here, and half the stuff on the internet on the same topics (lol). The wireless internet was a big selling point to me, and though the games are awesome thus far, I can't justify the system unless I can get everything to work on it. Thanks alot for your time, and I hope someone out there can give me a hand. I'd be happy to give someone my aim name if that would be of any assistance to my cause. Thanks again

Izak

Dave Taylor said, on February 24, 2006 9:58 PM:

Phat, you're right. You don't want to change the WEP code, you want to figure out what it *is* then use that for your PSP just as you would another laptop or computer in your house/office.

thanks

Dave Taylor said, on February 26, 2006 8:32 PM:

Phat, the stars are shown as a security measure. You still need to know the password directly from the access point, you can't take the shortcut of checking a computer that connects properly to the network. Sorry!

Dave Taylor said, on April 2, 2006 9:21 PM:

Ryan, your WEP is something that's set in your wireless access point / wifi device, not something on your computer directly. Your wifi base station (they're all different names for the same thing) should have some administrative software or a special address that you can point your Web browser to let you get to these settings. That should get you what you need.

My PSP will no longer access the net, for some reason it just stopped. It comes up with error (80410209) and I can't find a reason for it at all. My WEP key is correct. The PSP detects the WLAN in my house BTHUB setup, but when it tries to access the net it comes up with the error now. I've tried sitching to B mode from B/G mode switching from 64 to 128 bit encryption but I have lost the capability of accessing the net on my psp now :( And can't think why? There is no reason at all for it as my pc's in the house can still access the BTHUB WLAN. What has changed on my PSP? One night I'm browsing next night I'm hist with this strange error.

killorbytes said, on December 26, 2006 8:01 AM:

Just found a solution to the WEP issue. Make sure your Wireless network is set to "Open" NOT "Shared." Contrary to the terminology, "Open" is actually better security.

If you choose 64 bit encryption, you'll need the default WEP key you set (I have mine set to Key1) - just enter in the 5 character code and you're golden.

Everyone to login myspace you usually have to type in your myspace url (myspace.com/xxxxxx) then click on view more pics and login from there should work... and the psp password is all 0000 and you can change it after!!

DSperling said, on January 2, 2007 10:29 AM:

I've read through all of these (and other listings) and am still unable to connect my PSP to my wireless network.

I know quite a bit about networking, so this isn't something simple (like "what's my SSID??)!

My specifics are that I run 128 bit WEP encryption (so my hex key is 10 characters long). Also, unlike everyone else I've seen post here, I don't take the default "key1" but rather use "key3".

So... my PSP finds the network OK with OK signal strength, but when I enter the 10 digit hex key, it is still unable to connect. Can anyone else confirm that they DO enter their hex key and not their "english" key. (Please tell me that the PSP does NOT do something silly like default to 64 bit encryption with key1.) Also, for those able to connect, did it matter if you used capital letters or lower case?

Thanks!

Dave Taylor said, on January 2, 2007 10:57 AM:

I have to admit that I have never gotten my PSP to connect with my 10-digit hex-key WEP 802.11b network either. I just tap into my neighbors networks, which is darn annoying. I keep thinking that an update will fix it, but so far it's all still nonfunctional.

Interestingly, I have a Nokia 770 device which is kinda like a PSP minus games but plus bluetooth, etc., and when I first got it, it too couldn't see my network, but when I applied an OS update from Nokia it worked just fine.

Maybe Sony just isn't paying attention to this particular problem?? I'll bug 'em during CES next week.

Rich said, on January 2, 2007 1:27 PM:

Just got the WEP working on my PSP. Needed to set the authentification type to 'both' rather than 'shared' on the access point and I can now connect with 64-bit, 10 digit hex key encryption.

DSperling said, on January 2, 2007 2:23 PM:

Thanks... I also FINALLY got mine to work, but it had been a different problem. I switched my key selection from "key3" to "key1" and the PSP connected. Then, all I had to do was go around to the other four computers on my wireless LAN and change the password.

Thanks for the help!

If ur getting 'Bas Request' for myspace just press triangle, go on tools and delete cookies, cache, authnetication, input history (everything which says delete - delete it!) Then if it doesnt work restart ur PSP and it shud (as in turn it off n on again!)

Or if it still doesn't work go on this site as an alternative!

Leon said, on April 21, 2007 11:00 AM:

Locating your WEP is not really that hard.
You have to go to your router's properties.
Go to Control Panel
Open Network Connections.
Right click on your network connection "Local Area Connection" by default.
Select "Status"
A small window will pop up.
Click on "Support" Tab.
Right down your "Default Gateway" Ex: "123.456.7.890"
Open a new Internet Explorer window.
Type those numbers in the Addres Bar. This will take you to your router settings.
Now, since all the internet providers dont have the same setting display you have to do a little research yourself.
In my case i have an icon named "Home Network"
That shows me all the computer conected to my Network (router) In that same window it shows to me a option "Status at a Glance / Local Interfaces & Wireless Settings" Here is where you need to go.
Under Wireless Settings it shows my Network Name and my Access Point. I just click on "Edit Settings"
The next window it shows me if I have Wireless Security Enable or Not. In my case I do and it shows me where to find my WEP number. Which are the 10-digit number under my routher.

My internet provider is AT&T. My routher is a 2WIRE XXXXHG Gateway

Im sorry if you are confused, Im just trying to guide you step by step on how to get your WEP.

I hope this will help some of you guys. If you have any more questions just email me. Ill try to send you pics or something.

Good Luck Everyone. --Leon.

Click on that and it will give you the 26 Hex equivalent password (WEP key)

Hi I've just bought a pre owned PSP but it has a 4 digit security code on it I do not know what this is. Is there any way I can over ride this or should I just return it to the shop? I would be grateful for any help.

I would really like to be able to access the internet properly.

I've finally figured out where to find the WEP Key # on my wireless router after numerous hours of trying to figure out everything. It was as simple as flipping the router over and entering the unlabeled WEP # underneath the S.N.(Serial Number) in brackets.

use the scan option to find the WEP network and click NONE for the security on the next screen. some networks will let you right in.

Just wanted to share my experience on setting up my recently received (thank-you Santa!) PSP-2000 (slim) model to work online with my in-home wireless network in the hopes that it might help some of you out there that are having issues. First, I would also like to thank Dave as this site has already helped me set up a couple of things with my new PSP, including getting online. To set up the background, I have a wireless D-Link dl-624 router in my home with 128-bit encryption, which means a 26 character WEP kep or password if you prefer. At first I tried to enter the 26 character WEP key, however the PSP would only accept 21 characters, so I couldn't enter the entire WEP key. Using the information above AND MY SET UP BOOK FOR MY ROUTER (I'm surprised how many people throw this away after the initial set-up, you must keep this information people!), I went online and reconfigured my router settings to ensure that the following were set...1) set network to "open" NOT "SHARED" 2) ensure that you are using "key 1" as your WEP key position. Finally I changed from 128 bit to 64 bit encryption so that I could reduce my WEP key from 26 characters to 10 characters. Once I reduced the number of characters in my WEP key, I re-entered this key into my PSP. I must tell you that the first time I tried to enter the Key, my PSP did not accept it, so I tried a second time. On the second time, my PSP accepted the WEP KEY, I finished up the set up with all "AUTOMATIC" settings on the PSP and PRESTO! I was able to access the internet! One word of caution if you use this method, remember to change your WEP KEY CODE on any of your in home desktops/laptops/xbox 360, etc (anything that is accessing your network) to your NEW WE KEY or you will not be able to use those devices to access the internet. If what I have written here helps even one person, then I am happy I have taken the time to submit this comment.

Cheers,

Alex

The way i did it is the following: Im using SBC yahoo DSL (AT&T now) I call them (at 1 800 number) and asked them for the WEP Key and they told me that I can find that number under my router. Its the 10-digits key in a parenthesis.
I hope this help you guys.

Eric said, on February 25, 2008 4:46 PM:

Hey. For all those who were wondering why When you got on myspace on your PSP, it said bad request because it may have a parental control. to fix that, go to settings, then go down to secuirity settings. you will see a row of parental control levels and you should change it to none, and you will have to have a password. if a password was never set, then it is just 0000.

Starbucks coffee cup I do have a lot to say, and questions of my own for that matter, but first I'd like to say thank you, Dave, for all your helpful information by buying you a cup of coffee!
